It appeared several times in TNG too. Talk about elemenating poverty, greed, etc. But, in truth, it was really kinda muddled. From what I've seen, if you're in Starfleet, you don't get a paycheck. You get three squares a day, shelter, clothes, whatever you need. But there is definetly some system of trade considering the Ferengi (fuck if I know how to spell it) were a strong capitalists who did trade with individuals in the show. It's basically a Rodenberry "Hey! The future is great with running streams of champagne, gumdrop rainbows, and butterscotch meadows! Just don't ask me how it was done!"

The Ferengi is a good point. I think people had to pay for drinks at the bar at DS9.

Plus Romulan Ale is illegal in the Federation.

Don't get me started there, PJ!

There is no evidence that the character Sulu was gay or straight, just like with the fictional character of Dumbledore, who is from the Harry Potter franchise..we have yet to hear if there was ever a Mrs. Dumbledore..or any little Dumbledore's running about. Perhaps then, it is acceptable to simply draw your own conclusions.

Still, I do yearn for the day when it can be casually mentioned that this character or that character in Star Trek at least had anaffair with a man or woman.

As for the gay gene being eliminated? I'd rather see the Terrorism gene be eradicated, as well as the gene that causes people to perform acts of violence against other humans simply because they are different.

Picard would not approve....

On the subject of money, I remember reading an interview with Roddenberry back when TNG was just coming out. He said point-blank that there were two things he could never figure out for Trek back when he created it in the 60's:

1) How to land a ship as big as the Enterprise. (Thus why the beaming came into creation)

2) How finances work in a utopian setting.

He always admitted that, and stated it was an on-table challenge to any writer for Trek to figure it out. No one ever did. Thus, they've just kind of left it open for interpretation.

And, as Doc said, Starfleet...as a military/exploration service...do not get paid in the way we understand it. However, there have been indications of some type of credit or points system, as in the pilot episode of TNG Crusher "buys" a spool of fine silk, and says "Have it sent to the ship and charge it to Doctor Beverly Crusher...". This makes me think that every Starfleet officer is given so much credit or points for off-world bartering or purchasing...

One of the things I disliked about TNG was its constant state of whimsy. The first season had the captain talk down to a whole bunch of races and demonstrating how superior the Federation was since they were able to eliminate poverty, the death penalty, world hunger, etc.--But they wouldn't tell anyone how it was achieved! The most the show had to offer were story solutions that could be thought up by people of our current timeframe with no trouble at all. The series adopted a "What would the Federation do" tune, but the fact of the matter is that they did nothing we couldn't do. They're no more enlightened then I am. I furthermore disliked their sweeping comments about what is and is not silly to fight over. I get what they were trying to say, seeing as how they went out of their way to make it a happy-go-lucky fantasy realm, but it was bloody insensitive if you ask me.

On-camera: The Prime Directive?

Off-camera: as Pro pointed out, Roddenberry et al. had no clue how to plausibly explain that.

I think we can agree that political science and physics don't exactly work the same way.

Maybe we'll develop warp someday, but we'll never get rid of the social issues that plague us everyday.

Well, I gave one in my previous posts. Credits and points. What's the difference if I do it, or if the writers do it? It's still fiction, and amounts to the same. Suspension of disbelief, people! William Shatner got laid every week on the show! Hello!
