'Law & Order' in Trouble as Actress Quits

Things are pretty dicey over at "Law & Order," NBC's 16-year-old police series.

For one thing, the actress who plays the assistant district attorney just quit. For another, insiders from the show are "convinced" that their beloved employment is about to be terminated.

One of the many reasons is lower ratings thanks to being up against ABC's powerhouse "Lost" on Wednesdays in the 9 p.m. timeslot. In recent weeks, NBC finally moved "Law & Order" out of harm's way, to 10 p.m., but it may too little too late.

To make matters even more complicated, sources tell me that Annie Parisse, the talented brunette who had been playing the assistant district attorney on the main show, has quit.

The problem now is that creator and executive producer Dick Wolf can't cast a replacement because no one knows if the show is coming back.

There's a significant morale problem, too. Sources say that there have been "a lot" of firings, including a portion of the camera crew.

"None of the original writer-producers are there anymore," a source said. "They've all been replaced by people from L.A. who don't get the show."

And then there's the issue of Jerry Orbach. Everyone I spoke to said the same thing in one way or another: Without the late beloved actor, "Law & Order" isn't the same. "And people don't like Dennis Farina" is the comment I got about the actor who was hired to succeed Orbach even before he died.

If "Law & Order" does get cancelled, or renewed just long enough to do a finale season, it won't be a tremendous surprise. Sixteen years, after all, is twice the length of the run of a regular hit show. Still, insiders blame the constant reruns on TNT for over-saturating the brand.

I'm kind of suprprised at this news. I haven't watched it much over the past few years (I found it getting too formulaic) but I thought it was still a big hit.

I've never, ever enjoyed the show, or, any of its bastardizations, spinoffs, and whatnot. CSI, CIS, CSI-Miami, CSI-New York, Law & Order: SVU, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Law & Order: The Wonder Years, Law & Order: Deep Space Nine........gah!!

I've been looking forward to the day NBC has to cancel all of these regurgitative props, and have to come up with something new to fill the void. That, and their overdramatic, cheesy, slo-mo ads for their shows, where the actor/actress looks all serious, and stares up into the camera in slow motion. Those make me want to wretch. What's worse, someone at NBC actually believes those are "cool" or "trendy"....

What they should have done, when Orbach passed away, was bring back Chris Noth's character as the "seasoned vet" and paired him with Jesse Martin.

Personally, I think the show never recovered from the loss of Adam Schiff, several years earlier.

Oh, I'm not saying there won't be "The Next Office", "The Restaurant", "The Dairy Factory", and/or, "The Other Office Next Door". But, at least it won't have the "Law & Order" title on it...

I liked 'Law & Order' when I first started watching it. I even like catching some of the reruns on TNT (I wished they'd show more of the older seasons). It's just pretty much run the gamut, though. I think we've seen all the spins on murders, plots to murder, or plots to cover up murders that Dick Wolf and his crew can give us. They're basically throwing the same stories back out there again and again. Time to let it go. SVU is crap. Criminal Intent might be better without the Law & Order tag.

L&O has been conceptually faltering since even before Jerry Orbach retired. But yeah, watch the show now and you see just how much Jerry meant to that show.

It was moved to Wednesdays at 9 in an attempt to bring in viewers who didn't want to stay up til 10, but it got beat by LOST in the new timeslot (many of us L&O fans predicted it would).

The mothership, as the Wednesday show gets called in the Web vernacular, skews too old, with 4 of the 6 cast members over 50. The recent female additions to the DA's office--Elisabeth Rohm and Annie Parisse--have been widely criticized for being more eyecandy than actor.

I'm an L&O veteran, since 1996. I don't watch SVU because the subject matter is just too distasteful. CRIMINAL INTENT, especially with the return of Chris Noth as Det. Mike Logan, is the best of the three shows (L&O: TRIAL BY JURY was awful and deserved its cancellation last spring).

Steve Hill was great.

I don't blame Dennis Farina for L&O's problems. But it would have been better had Dick Wolf gone for someone radically different from the Briscoe/Fontana veteran cop thing.

I thought Schiff was great, but I would have assumed you'd really like Arthur Branch(played by Fred Dalton Thompson), since he's the uncompromising, take no bullshit conservative Republican DA.

I also agree with this. I got started on TNT reruns, as well, and while Law and Order has had a great run, they've been at it so long that there's really nothing that ever surprises me anymore. It's predictable.

I never bothered much with the spinoffs but I was underwhelmed by what I saw. I do like Vincent D'Onofrio, though.

Criminal Intent (for those that don't know) is a L&O show as well. What I don't get though is how Alex is on there when she's supposed to be in witness protection.

Granted I've only seen the first episode but still.

As for L&O as a whole, as much as I enjoy the show, having been around for 16 years they can cancle it, it had a great run. What I wash TNT would do is not show the same episodes so often. They need to either start from the first episode and run them through to the end, or shuffle them better. I tuned in the other day to an episode I had seen about a week or two ago. I like to watch the old episodes, but not on repeat like that. Give me something to look forward to by showing me something different for a change. They have more than enough episodes that they can do that with.

i think if they really wanna renew the franchise they should focus on like a traffic ticket lawyer who feels impotent that he never rose above trying to disporove a jaywalking, so he sucks ass with a guy from jersey in exchange for moderating a forum, and by doing so saves his wife some beatings by feeling manly by moving and deleting posts.....

And even though everyone knows he's gay because he's so outrageously flaming, the closeted traffic ticket lawyer still pretends he's straight by making references to daughters he doesn't actually have because he's shooting blanks.

He wasn't bad, but he wasn't Steven Hill/Adam Schiff.

For one thing, this is New York City. It's completely unrealistic to believe that the DA is going to be a southern republican. On the other hand, Adam Schiff, a tough old New York Jew, was pretty much what you'd expect.

Thompson a good actor, but I would have rather seen him on a show set in the south, or D.C. He just stuck out too much on L&O.

Though he was a gazillion times better than Dianne Weist.

Scrubs sadly is running out of steam. A real shame. I think the problem is that JD Eliott and Turk have all grown up and know how to be doctors. Thus the show can no longer run on its original premise and relies too much on slapstick and bizarre stories.

I thought the latest episode was kind of lame, but there have been a few pretty good ones this season.

Besides, they were "real doctors" in season four, and I thought that season was great.

I think SCRUBS is running a natural progression. Essentially, it's about the four main characters growing up as professionals and people.

I think it's still hilarious.

Oh, and in keeping on topic, CNN is reporting this morning that all 3 LAW AND ORDER shows have been renewed by NBC. The original L&O is only 4 full seasons behind GUNSMOKE for longest-running network primetime drama.

It has its moments, but compare it to year 1 and it pales massively. I'm glad that JD has actually grown up, but some episode feel like they have no point whatsoever.

I think they won't cancel the original Law and Order before it hits 20 years. Its gotten to the point where its an iconic fixture on the network so it'll be dead last in the ratings before they finally pull the plug. Hopefully Waterston sticks around till then.

I think you're referring to Mariska Hargitay's character on SVU. Mariska took her maternity leave, so I'm guessing this is how they're explaining it. Yes, she will live.

It's a sitcom. It's ok to sometimes be funny without a point.

But the humor used to be smarter. I feel sometimes that they now rely too heavily on secondary characters. Can you honestly say that the Todd and the Janitor are funnier when they are featured heavily in a story line?
The same thing happened to the Simpsons.
Scrubs was an excellent show, I just think they've hit a dead end of sorts. It was supposed to be about the trio growing up and becoming Doctors. Now they are all attendings, and no longer need any medical advice, hence the premise has run its course.
Search your feelings, you know this to be true.

CNN reported Friday afternoon that all 3 LAW AND ORDER shows have been renewed for 2006-07.

Sidenote: NBC will have to make a decision on where to reschedule CRIMINAL INTENT and CROSSING JORDAN because they're both impacted by NBC's return to NFL football with their Sunday Night Football package.
