I totally disagree - I thought it was excellent. The only point I agree on is that Jack Nicholson is the same character in every movie - I said as much to my family as we watched it - but it works for some parts and I thought it workd for this one.

In all honesty, this is the first HD-DVD that I've bought where I actually noticed the difference.

It may have something to do with the fact that I've owned multiple versions of this film. First on VHS, then Laserdisc and then DVD. So I'm pretty familiar with almost every frame of this film by now.

The HD-DVD presentation is just jaw dropping stunningly beautiful. It's so much more vibrant and majestic to look at and listen to now.

This DVD made the investment in HD more than worth it. which Transformers or 300 really didn't do for me.

I saw it this week and I can understand why. First, the superficial: The animation was crap and the voices were awful! Everyone looked like an emaciated version of their JLU/animated Superman version of themselves. And what the fuck was up with the lines on Supes' face? Were they trying to show that he has cheek bones or something? Because it didn't work at all - everytime he was on screen I was mentally trying to erase those lines - they were ugly and distracting. As for the voices - I love James Marsters, but as Luthor his voice just didn't work. When you think of how majestic and commanding Clancy Brown's voice was...well, anything less is going to pale. Anne Heche - I loathe her, but that aside, her voice had a high pitched, squeakiness to it that ruined Lois for me - I kept thinking about how awful she sounded. Adam Baldwin's voice was just ok as Supes.

I don't even know where to begin with the story. I am not a Superman fan by any stretch of the imagination, and even I realized that this wasn't close to the original storyline. I get that in 72 minutes there was only so much they could have included, so the absence of things like the 4 supermen wasn't a suprise, but still... things like Lois sleeping with Superman, but not knowing that he was Clark?!?! WTF?! And Luthor being behind Doomsday? Is that what really happened? (I don't know, I don't read Supes) I seem to recall hearing a different version... The only thing that made some sense - and only because I am an on/off reader of Teen Titans - is that Luthor does some sort of cloning - Superboy DNA was a 50/50 split between Luthor and Supes, so I assume that maybe that the cloning did happen in the comics...

Superman/Doomsday just reinforces the fact that the quality of the current animated shows (I don't include the Fleisher Superman stuff, as that was in a class by itself) has plummeted at a stupifying rate since the B:TAS/JLU/Late '90's Superman animation ended. I realize that the bar was set incredibly high by these shows, but one look at The Batman and all the animated superhero shows confirms this fact - its almost like, "why did they even bother?"

I got my 5 free HD-DVD's (finally) in the mail yesterday. It only took about 2X as long as promised.

So I decided to watch 2 of them last night.

First off..

I can't believe I ever enjoyed this film. It was BORING. Worse, the clarity of the HD presentation makes all the FX work look FAKE as FAKE can get.

Next....

This film has always been overblown and pretentious but at one point in time I actually enjoyed watching it. Now i'm just struck at how flat and unmotivated the band sounds thru much of the performances. I have much better bootleg DVD's that I've downloaded. This might have to do with the gargantuan film crew that you can clearly see being all over the damned place and in between the band onstage.

The video quality is top notch of course. A lot of film grain but I'm sure that was deliberate.

I guess it'll be a while until we get people who actually WANT to film in HD and people who film in HD who don't think it's more realistic to ADD grain.

Still, some good performances sprinked throughout, such as the powerful "Sunday Bloody Sunday".

The rest of the films I recieved are:

The Perfect Storm
Casablanca
Apollo 13

I'll probably watch them tonight.

I didn't think it was too bad, but knowing how it was going to end dampened (no pun intended) any enthusiasm I had for the film.

However, my wife decided that she had to see that movie, in no small part to the fact it featured George Clooney and her home state of Massachusetts. So, on a weekend when it was her turn to choose a movie, she dragged me to see it at dingy little arthouse theater at the end of its run. The theater put it on a screen that was (and I am not making this up) only about eight feet high and sixteen feet wide, in a side room that held only about thirty seats.

At the end of the movie, she was in tears. She never thought that George Clooney would die. I guess she missed the whole true story it was based on.

To make matters worse, literally three days later the damn thing came out on DVD.

I watched this show back in 1963 when it was new and on tv every Saturday morning.

Finally got around to watching this. I really, really wanted to like this, but it was terrible. Basically, this was just a series of scenes that were meant to be emotional and meaningful, but there was no real thread to hold it all together. You never got the sense of who Lavoe was, despite the fact that he was an incredible force for salsa. And J.Lo just cannot seem to give up the spotlight to anyone else, not even her husband. This movie should have been called "Jennifer Lopez in pretty clothes with Lavoe music sung by Anthony." The music is the only good thing in this movie.
