most people go by actor playing the Doctor and the year the show was made. Baker had the longest run (seven years) and has plenty of good and bad episodes. the height of his era is generally considered the period that Douglas Adams was the main writer. but even then, there are several episodes that weren't written by Adams that are good. some are watchable only due to Baker's performance.

there is a lot of the Adams/Baker Doctor in the Ford Prefect character from the Hitchiker's novels.

You fail!

that's what you think.

saw Intolerable Cruelty, Painkiller Jane, and Support Your Local Gunslinger, and half of Five Came Back (with Lucille Ball pre 'I Love Lucy').

All were totally unremarkable.

Well, Support Your Local Gunslinger was alright, a comedic(ish) western made by western film crews.

It's Support Your Local GunFIGHTER. Not slinger. The was also Support Your Local Sheriff which I thought was the better of the two.

Both starred James Garner and the other dude. Actually alot of the same cast was in both.

Tudors season 1 was just ok, which was suprising as Henry 8's reign is only second to his daughter's reign in being fascinating... plus it had the delicious Jonathan Rhys Meyers in it, but that still wasn't enough for me to love it.

I'm gonna switch things up a little.

Next Thursday, I'm closing on my first home. In celebration of us getting a house together, my gal went out and bought me a 46" flatscreen LCD TV. Once I set up the home theater (sometime Friday, as we'll be painting and wallpapering all day Thursday after closing, and the leather sectional and entertainment unit come on Friday), I want to watch something that will take advantage of the wonders that the TV and home theater will provide. But what to watch?

I'm leaning towards my Japanese import of Grindhouse, particularly the actual theatrical release that isn't offered in the US. Or Shawn Of The Dead, as it's one of my favorite flicks and deserving of "first movie watched" status. Someone suggested Top Gun to take advantage of the upgraded picture and sound, but I don't own it. So what do all of you suggest? What movie deserves to be the first film watched on the new home theater?

If you aint a Star Wars fan, you at least need to go for some sort of big budget special effects movie.
Something like T2, X-Men, Batman Begins, Transformers, Fifth Element or something similar.

Alternatively, something like Showgirls, with the sound turned off and a box of tissues!

I'm not picking up Blu-Ray yet because, as happy as I am that the format wars are over and that high-def DVD players are backwards compatible, no one has released a Blue-Ray player that is all-region. I have way to many foreign DVDs to give up on my all region player. However, once a hack is available or an all-region Blu-Ray DVD player hits the market, I'll definitely be upgrading.

I agree with your thoughts - better to go with the flick that's meant for Hi-Def picture and stereo sound (like a Star Wars or one of the blockbuster flicks) than something that's worth seeing early but doesn't need the technology to be enjoyed to the fullest.

As much as I like Elizabeth Berkeley's "body" of work, I'm more inclined to watch a muted Bound...Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly makes for some good watching! Or Original Sin, a shitty movie that features Angelina Jolie's deliciousness early enough in the flick that very little time needs to be invested.

Perhaps I said too much...

Star Wars!

Thinking about it.
If you aint a Star Wars fan, you at least need to go for some sort of big budget special effects movie.
Something like T2, X-Men, Batman Begins, Transformers, Fifth Element or something similar.

All excellent choices - I would add X2, 300 (because of the battle scenes) or either the first or last of the Die Hard movies to that list...

Oh, and Mazel Tov on your first home! Once you get over the nausea of handing over a check with all those zeroes you should be fine... ;\)

Dear, sweet Harley Kwink...I'm madly in love with you. Marry me! We can go to Canadia. Or Boston or something. It'll be grand...You know the cookies are a given. They are ALWAYS a given. You could dump me tomorrow and you'd still get the cookies. Boston..shit, wherever dyke weddings were legalized. And where better to rub their little piggie noses in how bad they suck than right on their doorstep? What are they gonna do? Be jealous of you? Stare furiously at your tah-tahs? Not willingly give you cookies, but instead begrudgingly give you their cookies? Woman, time to wake up to the powers you wield - Uschi

It's funny. Every day that we were house hunting, up until I signed the initial offer sheet, I would get nauseous if anyone asked me about it. But after that sheet was signed and things started moving along (mortgage application, inspections, hunting for home insurance, etc), I was fine. No stomach aches. No headaches. I'm 6 days away from closing and the only thing I feel is eagerness to sign the final papers and anxiousness to get out of the apartment.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Keep 'em coming!
