Joker's plans are so involved and intricate that you really have to suspend any belief in reality just to get through them. We're talking split second timing in just about every one of them. Now that I think of it, so was The Bat-Man's extraction of the Chinese crime figure from the tower. Nice that he timed it just when a FUCKING airliner flew by. (You'll see)
Ledger was good as Joker, and creepy as FUCK for most of the movie. Something was a little unsettling about the character in the beginning...the portrayal (especially when he kills the "Bat-Man" on camera) was FUCKING intense.
Maggie whateverherlastnameis was a nice surprise. The Rachel Dawes character came across as a cunt in the first The Bat-Man movie, but here she seems like an actual human being. Nice to see Katie Holmes not return. FUCK that bitch.
Two-Face was great. Really sold how unhinged he was when he threatened to whack Gordon's kid.
Bat-sonar was EPIC. It was like DareDevil all over again! Drives home The Bat-Man as a control freak with all his protocols and such.
Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Gary Oldman RAWKED again.
The Bat-Man taking the fall for Two-Face's murders seemed just dumb. With all the bullshit that went down in Gotham, couldn't Gordon just blame it all on The Joker?
Readers of The Bat-Man's fifteen hundred monthly titles ( I used to be one of those freaks) will like how close this movie stays to the books. Joker's multiple origins, (they still could have worked a few more "stories" in, though) The Bat-Man's absolute refusal to take a life (impractical and silly, but true to the books) the alliance between Gordon, The Bat-Man, and Dent, etc were written well.
Good movie, but very wild at times. I liked it a lot, but for some reason, I won't be rushing to see it again. I saw Batman Begins like a brillion times in the theatre, but I don't see that happening here.

ANYHOW! My spoilers... I loved the bit when Joker confronts the Mobsters. With the jacket of grenades and the "the television's plan.." and, shit, all the little ticks in his performance were GOLD, imo. I laughed so hard so many times. And when Joker visits Twofers in the hospital in the lady nurse costume, and then walks out... and the bad wiring on the explosives remote and jumping into the bus all shocked... omg, I laughed so hard I lost a few lines of dialogue.
And the clapping for the Commissioner, and "S-I-X!" and "What is it you want?" "My phone call." and what he really meant with the "HIT ME!" and and and... FANGIRL SQUEE HERE.

movie rocked. no question. too many 'blockbusters' give away all the big moments in the trailers, but tdk didn't. the aweshome moments you did see in the trailers were there, but they were just small parts in a much bigger work of art. this movie was stellar, and while there were some [minor and necessary] departures from continuity here and there, the film was very true to the spirit of the characters. the joker was amazing - to attempt to elaborate would fail to do him justice. the action sequences were extraordinarily well done. the gordon bait-and-switch subplot was sheer genius. they did a great job of making harvey dent a sympathetic character, to the point where you really couldn't hate two-face all that much no matter how nastay he looked (better be some nominations for that alone). definitely picked up on some dkr overtones in the ending of the movie. altogether an excellent, excellent movie. eleven and a half stars.

he shot off a flare which was tied to a balloon which signaled the plane to come and get them. it was very very believable and it was actually done. That isn't CGI. In fact Bale wanted to do that stunt himself but obviously they told him hell no. But that shot of Batman on top of the Sears tower in Chicago is really Bale not a stuntman. and he really is on the building. No camera tricks
really cool flick, the only two things that made me go ugh were:
Lucius(Morgan Freeman whining about using the cell phones to stop the Joker from killing millions
The prisoner throwing the detonator overboard, that was corny as hell.
the two coolest parts:
the Harvey Dent swerve where he said he was Batman, they had me till Batman appeared and I was all like hey waitaminute!
the Samuel L Jackson cameo after the credits, for those that didn't see it Samuel is Big Words from the Newsboy Legion, he recruits Batman to join and take the place of Scrappy.

Meaning he had Lucius whining about it but Batman saying we have to do this we have no choice to catch the terrorist we have to take drastic action. So I don't know if it was cut and dry either way. But again I agree the whole exchange could have been left out.
btw forgot to mention Ledger was very good in this role, he played him crazy without going overboard. i hope they were smart enough to sign him for another sequel i predict big things for him after this....

Yeah...it's just the timing involved. What if the plane was late or something? A lot of the action in this movie came down to split second timing: The Tumbler boosting in front of the armored car to intercept the missile, Joker mentioning the school bus, it backs into the bank a moment later, and then joins the line of other buses. Joker's getaway from the hospital, on and on.
Still a great movie, everything I mentioned in this thread was just too much.

Lucius whining about using the cell phones to stop the Joker from killing millions
He did help, so I didn't have a problem with it. I saw it, and the ending of the movie (Bats taking the fall), as a setup for the next one...if there's a next one. I saw Lucius' resignation and the temp-cave being shut down as a setup for Batman to be back at Wayne Manor in a real batcave. And working with little help. Also, with all the anarchy caused by the Joker, there had to be a breaking point in Batman's inner circle somewhere. That was it.

yeah i took it as Bruce gave him permission to shut it down after they caught the Joker. which is really stupid as it took batman 2 minutes to set it up the first time....
I cannot believe that no one has mentioned the pencil/magic moment in the movie! That, to me, pretty much defined the Joker right there - killing someone without a second thought and the making a joke about it ("It's magic!") after - that was an awesome moment!
Actually, everything about the movie was fantastic - I think its the first time a movie actually surpassed the hype about it. Ledger deserves every accolade he receives from this - he actually creeped me out at times, and Dent/Two-Face was done really well - you kinda felt sorry for him. Didn't see Rachel's death coming, but it was done well, and unlike Katie, Maggie's performance actually made her a likeable character.
Like Basite, I figured the cat comment was forshadowing for the next movie's villian. I've heard that Nolan and co aren't signed for a third movie - is this true? I sincerely hope not...
Way too long. Katie Homles should have been in this one. The whole Asian storyline was stupid and pointless. The Joker and Two-Face work better in the comics. The first one was better.
I partly agree with rex (why God why?) over the Asian storyline, but it did serve its purpose in Bats' quest to get to the Joker. I wanted to see more from Two-Face though. It would have been cool to see Harvey's role become that of the anti-hero that punishes those that have the power to save Gotham, but don't use it. Somehow the DA turned bank robber doesn't work as well for me, like in the animated series.
I'll agree there, I hated Two-Face's death. I mean, Batman made that exact fall and only had the wind knocked out of him! What the fuck killed Harvey?! But each time I watch, there is no breathing in the longish shots with his body in them. And, as a breather, I know you have to do that intentionally.

I don't think it was the same fall. I remember Harvey being taken by surprised and bodyslammed over the edge. He fell completely unprepared, already had the massive burns on his body, and hit the ground with nothing but the clothes on his back. Batman was hanging onto to something a foot or so down while he handed the kid up to Gordon and then fell. Not only was he wearing strong body armor, but as a trained martial artist ninja guy he knows how to take a fall.

Heh. I was expecting that too.
I think the part with the boats was TDK's answer to the part of Spider-Man 1 or 2 in which New Yorkers cheer for Spider-Man while he fights the villain. An expression of yank's will to fight evil after 9-11.
Perhaps there will a different cut on some of the DVD's.
Los Angeles (E! Online) - Ten years after sailing off with $600.8 million, Titanic remains the top-grossing movie of all-time, a title which, up until The Dark Knight onslaught, hasn't been seriously challenged.
Why?
Statistically speaking, says Jeffrey Simonoff, borrowing a famous line from screenwriter William Goldman, "Nobody knows."
"Many people have noted if the stock market is a high-risk market, the movies is far riskier," says Simonoff, professor of statistics at New York University's Stern School of Business.
Huge opening weekends and great buzz certainly increase a movie's odds of making lots and lots of money, but beyond that, Simonoff argues, it's all guesswork.
"What Titanic had was the amazing word of mouth that just kept growing and growing," Simonoff says. "[But] it wasn't like after the second weekend people could say this is going to be the No. 1 movie for the next three months."
Actually, Titanic was the No. 1 movie at the weekend box office for about three-and-a-half months, or 15 weeks, the second-longest run in the top spot after E.T., which logged 16 weeks there in 1982.
To Vicki Kunkel, author of upcoming Instant Appeal: The 8 Primal Factors That Create Blockbuster Success, movies that play on and on and on, like Titanic, are the cinematic equivalent of potato chips—one viewing is not enough.
"Titanic pretty much had all the elements that light up the endorphins on the brain," says Kunkel. "Anything that makes us feel good is addictive."
If all blockbuster movies contain like elements, Kunkel points out, then Titanic had all the right elements, including a love story (see: Leonardo DiCaprio's Jack and Kate Winslet's Rose), a self-sacrificing heroine (see: Rose spurn her rich fiancé, Billy Zane's Cal, for poor Jack) and a clear-cut battle between good and bad (see: Jack take on Cal).
Kunkel finds a couple of these key elements, especially the conflict between good and evil, at play in The Dark Knight. She doesn't, however, foresee another bag of potato chips. Or, more precisely, a bigger bag of potato chips.
"We relate more to real people than we do to superheroes," Kunkel says. "And that's when the real addictiveness happens, when we have a deep primal connection."
Christopher Sharrett, professor of communications and film studies at Seton Hall University, thinks there could be a different kind of connection going on between the seriously dark Dark Knight and today's moviegoers.
"It's ripped out of the headlines," Sharrett says. "It's something that appeals to a cynicism of the population."
More than that, Sharrett thinks the untimely death of Heath Ledger, so prominent in The Dark Knight as iconic villain The Joker, is the film's X factor—the something different that, as he sees it, distinguishes the superhero-action movie from all the other recent superhero-action movies.
But does that add up to The Dark Knight moving from $400 million, its certain next stop, all the way to Titanic's $600 million neighborhood?
"For what it's worth," Simonoff says, "I would certainly say it wouldn't be surprising given the way things look like now."
Then again, he says, it wouldn't be surprising if it fell $100 million short.
Says Simonoff: "You can never know for sure."
Up until its release, after all, Titanic was considered a $200 million gamble. Until it paid off. And off. And off.

ANYHOW! My spoilers... I loved the bit when Joker confronts the Mobsters. With the jacket of grenades and the "the television's plan.." and, shit, all the little ticks in his performance were GOLD, imo. I laughed so hard so many times. And when Joker visits Twofers in the hospital in the lady nurse costume, and then walks out... and the bad wiring on the explosives remote and jumping into the bus all shocked... omg, I laughed so hard I lost a few lines of dialogue.

Watched Batman Begins 4 o´clock at the morning (couldn't sleep due to the warm, damp wheather). Katie Holmes as Rachel didn't feel as retarded as the 1st time I saw that movie, but the one who played Rachel in TDK is still an huge improvement. Ironic that Nolan killed Rachel off, just when one started to appreciate her.

actually, I was spending most of my time trying to figure out what became "happy" (hit me!) and didn't notice. Then I posted it at a couple places and got bombarded with grammanazis and can't get them to shut up!
So as The Dark Knight steamrolls to $500 million dollars in domestic box office receipts, breaking all manners of all-time records along the way, the only real remaining "storyline" for the film is how close can it get to all-time box office champ Titanic, currently the only movie in history sailing the $600 million dollar seas.
There are the Oscar questions, of course - will Heath Ledger receive a posthumous nomination for his turn as the Joker, and can the film perhaps secure Best Picture and/or Best Director nominations? But we won't have any answers to those until early next year.
Comic book message boards abhor a vacuum, however, and these days in absence of anything that compelling to dissect about The Dark Knight, the focus of uber-fan energies is turning to the inevitable (the-sun-rises-in-the-morning sort of inevitable) next film in Warner Bros'. franchise.
Rumors and speculation focusing on possible villains and the actors who might play them are the fan forum fodder du jour, with names like Johnny Depp (The Riddler), Angelina Jolie (Catwoman), Philip Seymour Hoffman (The Penguin), and even Aaron Eckhart (as a Two-Face who apparently would enjoy a remarkable recovery) emerging from the pack.
And then there was that now infamous little exchange during last month's Comic-Con International: San Diego. Watchmen/300 director Zack Snyder reportedly mentioned that he'd like to see writer Frank Miller's seminal Batman graphic novel "The Dark Knight Returns" adapted into a big screen feature, with Miller later responding to Snyder's comment, "You can do it anytime you want to, Zack."
And Internet fandom was off and running...
As any self-respecting comic book reader knows, Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" – first published in 1986 in a watershed moment for comics publishing – is a work whose influences are already pervasive in Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Set in a not-too-distant future, the story – which helped give birth to (or at least popularize) the "grim and gritty" movement in comic books – finds a middle-aged Bruce Wayne emerge from a ten-year retirement as "the Batman" to battle his old nemeses Two-Face, the Joker – and even Superman.
So while a big-screen adaptation of one of the industry's holy grails is already near the tops of any fanboy's greatest "Hopes" and "Fears" lists, speculation is now turning towards whether something that few thought would ever happen could actually become reality sooner, rather than later.
Today we're going to discuss the merits of the "sooner" camp...
The very "sooner" camp, in fact.
Now adapting "The Dark Knight Returns" for the screen would be a bold and audacious move for any director and the studio, as well as a road fraught with some treacherous obstacles. For one, the story's entire third act featuring a Superman under the thumb of the Federal government would almost certainly have to be abandoned, if for no other reason (and there are quite a few) that Nolan's vision for the first two films is far too "grounded" to suddenly introduce a super-strong, flying man who can survive a nuclear explosion (as he does in the story).
So whether it's an unlikely "faithful" adaptation, or the more-likely "loosely" adapted version, placed together in context, the clues are there that some manner of adaptation of "The Dark Knight Returns" is precisely the direction Nolan is going in for a third film.
Let's run through the clues one-by-one. And we'll be talking about The Dark Knight in very story-specific detail, so you three people left on Earth who have yet to see the movie, consider yourself "spoiler" warned.
What's In a Name?
OK, OK, this is the flimsiest of circumstantial evidence but sometimes the most obvious clues are the most telling.
What do you call a sequel to a film (which curiously broke the naming precedent of the five "Batman" films before it) called "The Dark Knight"? A film in which in its closing moments, the protagonist runs off into the night, literally chased by dogs, his future as the protector of Gotham City in doubt?
Why, if you want it to actually star the Dark Knight, you call it "The Dark Knight Returns" of course.
And if you're going to go through the trouble of calling it "The Dark Knight Returns", well then...
In a Word – "Escalation"
One doesn't have to speculate whether Nolan and his co-writers David S. Goyer and brother Jonathan Nolan understand the concept of "escalation" – they introduced it into the series themselves in the closing moments of Batman Begins. In fact, they wrapped the entire existence of Heath Ledger's the Joker around it.
The Dark Knight was clearly an "escalation" over Batman Begins in both theme and tone. The landscape was broader, the stakes higher, and the tragedies greater. Operatic in tone and grandiose in scale, Nolan has left himself one direction to take this story, and that's to its necessary end.
No matter how high-rent the actor (and the franchise can now afford very high rent), no other villain or villains are going to feel appropriately menacing – or satisfying – after the nihilistic embodiment of chaos Ledger and Nolan created.
The Joker killed Bruce Wayne's great love and destroyed the one person Batman thought could make him obsolete. He nearly seduced the very soul of Gotham City itself.
How in the world do you top that? How do you make the audience feel the stakes raise and not have the next installment feel like a breather?
By actually finishing that story, that's how. Which brings us to...
The Three Act Structure
There is little doubt Christopher Nolan understands what a three-act structure is, and every reason to believe he understands any storyteller is pushing their luck with any more than three (good luck Sam Raimi). Yes, a compelling argument can be made that Warner Bros. isn't going to put this cash cow out to pasture, and will want a new Batman movie every few years, but they can still have that, which we'll address later.
We'll also take Nolan at this word that he hasn't signed on for a next installment yet (and God bless him and the upcoming due reward he'll receive if he hasn't), but given his talents as a storyteller, it would be shocking if he a) was telling a story he didn't already know the ending to, breaking the cardinal rule of storytelling; and b) left the franchise without finishing the story by his own hand.
Nolan famously completed Batman Begins without "knowing" whether he'd do a second installment. That didn't stop him from laying the seeds for The Dark Knight in that first film's closing moments.
By leaving the Joker (literally) hanging at the end of The Dark Knight, Nolan left open-ended a story that begs to be finished. Even Tim Burton knew he had to kill Jack Nicholson at the "end". Nolan himself killed Ra's at the end of Batman Begins and he even tied-up a loose end regarding the Scarecrow in The Dark Knight. These are both clear signals Nolan knows the story has to have an end and has some idea for that end already in mind.
Nolan further foreshadows the future in The Dark Knight's climatic moments as well. Remember when the Joker tells Batman the two of them can "do this for years"? Filmmakers of Nolan's talent don't throw away lines like that, especially in a moment like that. That was the director signaling to the audience that he understands one of "The Dark Knight Returns'" main themes - that the Joker's very existence is primarily to be Batman's nemesis and their fates were inevitably intertwined, as well as a signal that their final showdown will in fact come years down the road.
Which brings us back to the three-act structure: Act One (Batman Begins) was the first Batman story. Act Two (The Dark Knight) was a classic tragic turning point.
So what does this demand Act Three be?
Well, not only the final battle of Batman and the Joker, but also the last Batman story, of course.
The Joker/Ledger Factor
By leaving the fate of the Joker open in The Dark Knight knowing the performance he had gotten from Ledger, Nolan also knew he was casting a shadow over the next film and any future installments until the character's story is finished – whomever happens to be behind the camera when it is.
While perhaps a marketing department's worst nightmare and admittedly macabre, Nolan could have made a different pragmatic decision in post-production and made the Joker's fate more "final". By leaving the character alive, Nolan knowingly left the next director the choice of either having to somehow make villains like the Penguin, the Riddler, or Catwoman more of a menace than they've ever been in the comic books, or using the Joker again.
And even if the former approach could be achieved, are moviegoers really going to be satisfied with the idea the Joker is simply sitting in prison somewhere, particularly given his jailbreak in The Dark Knight? The next film would be anti-climatic before it ever began.
It would make sense, however, that if Batman goes further underground (as suggested in The Dark Knight's ending), that the Joker would simply not even try to escape, his reason for being removed, a major element of "The Dark Knight Returns".
So that leaves this pragmatic question – given the circumstances, how do you finish the Batman/Joker story? Well, it would still be difficult, but by telling a story set 10, 15, 20 (?) years in the future, Nolan would buy himself some much-needed leeway to recast the Joker as an older man.
It would still be an unenviable task for both the director and whatever actor accepted that challenge, but it just might provide some measure of wiggle room.
So here's the recapped case for the next film being an adaptation (on some level) of "The Dark Knight Returns".
1.) The Dark Knight's title and ending makes the next film being called "The Dark Knight Returns" logical. 2.) The next film needs to further "escalate" the series, and be even bigger and bolder than The Dark Knight. 3.) Nolan seems to be crafting a three-act structure, and left the Joker's fate open to be a major element of a final act. 4.) The “Dark Knight Returns” future setting gives Nolan some "room" to help recast the Joker.
And the Case Against?
As mentioned, in the context of the world Nolan has created in the first two movies, some parts of "The Dark Knight Returns" are un-filmable. Superman's role in the story and the whole third act are impossible to make work. To refine this theory, we're effectively talking about liberally adapting the main elements of the first two acts of Frank Miller's story.
A 14 year-old girl running around in a Robin costume doesn't make much sense in the Nolan Bat-verse either, although given the 'Batman imitators' element the director introduced in The Dark Knight, a young disciple who could serve a similar role as Carrie does in TDKR wouldn’t be too hard to imagine.
Then there is the question of finality. The Dark Knight is on its way to becoming the second-highest grossing film of all time. Why, oh why, would Warner Bros. produce a film that could potentially be perceived by audiences as the last story in the franchise?
Well, here’s the thing - that's happened once already, unintentionally. Joel Schumacher's Batman & Robin almost killed the big-screen Batman.
The success of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight prove moviegoers are a forgiving lot, and (like comic book fans) understand the nature of a self-contained story arc. While in-story internal logic requires "continuity", doesn't Nolan's relaunch of the franchise indicate fans will accept new creative visions that aren't necessarily related to previous ones? That fans want a good story; not necessarily a next one?
Perhaps the wisest thing Warner Bros could do is let talented filmmakers like Nolan tell their own stories in the classic, satisfying three-act structure, instead of just trying to keep films rolling out in serial fashion to higher costs, even higher expectations, and eventual lesser returns. To let new filmmakers relaunch and reinvent the adaptable franchise again (and again, and again) on his or her own terms.
We just can't shake this feeling that this is exactly what they're going to do.

"The Dark Knight" ruled the North American box office for a fourth weekend on Sunday to become the third-biggest movie of all time.
The Batman sequel earned an estimated $26 million during the three days beginning on Friday, distributor Warner Bros. Pictures said, taking its total to $441.5 million after 24 days.
It now ranks at No. 3 on the all-time list, behind "Titanic" with $601 million and "Star Wars" with $461 million.
But adjusted for inflation, the sales of "The Dark Knight" rank more modestly at No. 49, according to tracking form Box Office Mojo. The 1939 epic "Gone With the Wind" wins by that measure with $1.4 billion in today's dollars.
Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc, said it expects "Dark Knight" to end up with about $520 million.
The weekend's No. 2 slot went to the new Columbia Pictures release "Pineapple Express" with $22.4 million.
The stoner comedy undoubtedly would have been No. 1 had the unit of Sony Corp not opted to open the picture two days earlier than usual on Wednesday to maximize sales during the school holidays. The five-day total for the Seth Rogen film stands at $40.5 million.
Another Wednesday opener was "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2," which came in at No. 4 with $10.8 million for the weekend. The Warner Bros drama has a five-day haul of $19.7 million.
Its 2005 predecessor, released before America Ferrera and Blake Lively became stars with their respective TV shows "Ugly Betty" and "Gossip Girl," earned $9.8 million during its first three days.

A man accused of trying to steal a large Batman movie poster from a cinema lobby while dressed as the Joker has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of malicious destruction of property.
Twenty-year-old Spencer Taylor entered the plea Wednesday in St. Joseph County District Court.
A judge ordered him to serve one day in jail, perform 16 hours of community service and pay $685 in fines.
Charges of attempted larceny in a building and using a mask to conceal his identity during the commission of a crime were dismissed as part of Taylor’s plea agreement.
Three Rivers police say he was wearing a purple suit, green wig and face paint when they arrested him on July 27.

Well he started out as singer of Waysted (the band formed by Pete Way of UFO), and then went on to form Tyketto. Tyketto were signed to Geffen, and had some reasonable success with the song Forever young!

there was one in Something About Mary years before Secretary, where Chris Elliot actually grabbed the back of his wife's head and shoved her face back down there when she stopped for a second. That's just off the top of my head. I know I've seen it in literally hundreds of movies since the 70s. Maybe you should stop turning your head at the sex scenes and give the socks a rest once in awhile.
I realized that when I saw it the first time my expectations were way off and for a very stupid reason I wanted to hate parts of the movie. Now that I've seen it once and I know what to expect I enjoyed it more.
It was still too long, I'm standing by my opinion that it should have been two movies. The first one could have ended after two face became two face and rachel died. They could have added more stuff to fill out the second movie and made even more money.
My new favorite part has to be the very end when Gordon is explaining to his son about why Batman is taking the blame for all of two faces crimes. To me it perfectly described what I think batman is.
I still think the first one was better but my opinion might change after I can watch both of them in one sitting.
The one thing I won't change my mind about is Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman. They were both better in the first and had a bigger part in the movie. That was one of the really disappointing things for me in TDK.
Let’s face it, folks — when “The Dark Knight” director Christopher Nolan talks, people listen (especially if you’re a geek like us!). And while we patiently wait for his answer on whether he’ll return for the sequel to “The Dark Knight,” we’ll gladly check out anything the fan-revered director has to say about both the 2008 summer blockbuster or any hints he drops about the next installment.
In an interview with USA Today, Nolan is once again asked about his status with the production of the third installment of the current “Batman” film franchise, and once again, Nolan spoke briefly about the challenges he’d face if he does indeed sign on for another tour of duty, echoing what he mentioned in previous interviews.
“I don’t know why they’re hard to do,” Nolan said in the USA Today story. “Maybe there’s so much expectation to them. It was obvious when the box office was so big that we had underestimated how ready fans were to reboot the franchise. The worst thing you could do now that you’ve gotten the plane back in the air is mess up the landing.”
So while Nolan remains cryptic in terms of a return to the director’s chair, one thing he did talk about is the upcoming release of “The Dark Knight” on DVD and Blu-ray, and specifically the reason why fans won’t be seeing a lot of Heath Ledger or many deleted scenes in the extras.
“For my past three films, I really haven’t had scenes that didn’t make it in the movie,” said Nolan. “If it’s in the final script, I tend to put it on screen. I don’t like outtakes or gag reels. I don’t think it’s respectful to the actors, who signed on to have their performance on screen, not the takes that didn’t work out. It discourages actors from going all-out if they think every mistake is going on the disc.”
The Dark Knight, out on DVD ($29 or $35) and Blu-ray ($36 or $65) Tuesday, is one of the most anticipated titles of the year. Knight director Christopher Nolan invited USA TODAY's Scott Bowles to his home office, where he edited the film, to explain some of his favorite scenes.
The bank is robbed
The story: The sequence is one of four that Nolan shot on IMAX, and he filmed it two weeks before principal photography began. "We wanted to see how much we could do on IMAX, how elaborate we could go," Nolan says. "Essentially, it was a test to see if we'd driven over the cliff."
Turns out, "there really wasn't anything we couldn't do," he says. "You can only shoot for 2½ minutes on that big IMAX film, so our takes were pretty short. But it was a great way to let Heath warm up."
Look for: Two gangsters hurtling between two Chicago high-rise buildings. Like most of the stunts and explosions in Knight, there is minimal computer-generated magic. "Those guys really were on that wire," Nolan says. "That's not a green screen. I'm not comfortable that high up, but they really got into it." Joker does a 'magic trick'
The story:Knight co-writer Jonathan Nolan (Christopher's brother) came up with the idea for the Joker to make a pencil disappear — by slamming a mobster's skull onto it. Then the Joker leaves his calling card.
"When Jonathan wrote it, I didn't really see it working," Nolan says.
But when Ledger got the script, "he insisted we keep the scene," Nolan says. "And I realized it was all in how Heath performed the lines. It's so creepy and brutal, without a drop of blood. Now I can't think of it not being in there."
Look for: How the pencil disappears. Filmmakers considered using a computer-generated pencil. For a few takes, Nolan hid behind the table and snatched the pencil before the thug's head hits it. Ultimately, the stunt man simply grabbed the pencil himself just before his face gets planted.
Batman confronts Joker
The story: This was the first scene Christian Bale and Heath Ledger had together, and Nolan considers the scene the linchpin of the film.
"It establishes exactly who they are," he says. "You see just how crazy the Joker is and just how similar Batman is to him."
Nolan says some actors prefer to save the climactic scenes midway through filming, or toward the end. "Not Christian and Heath. They were really looking forward to this one," he says.
"I think we all knew that if this scene worked, the rest of the movie would, too."
Look for: A bloodless beating. Nolan had fake blood ready to smear on Ledger's face after Batman roughs up the Joker.
"But we decided it worked better to pull back some," Nolan says. "His makeup is so smeared and frightening, particularly in that lighting, that putting blood on his face would be over the top."
The hospital explodes
The story: Before Nolan began shooting, he promised himself "to blow up more things than any director had before." So when he heard that an old Brach's candy factory was to be demolished, he asked Chicago officials if they would let him decorate it like a Gotham General Hospital first.
Film crews set small explosives in the building to blow out a few prop windows and doors to signal demolition experts to detonate the actual building.
That really is Heath Ledger standing outside the building. "He was always a safe distance, but it was still pretty close," Nolan says. "He had caulk in his hair after the explosion."
Look for: A thumbs-up. A safety engineer can be spotted in the back of the Joker's getaway bus signaling to the driver that Ledger was safely inside. "We left it in," Nolan says. "We figured that could have been one of the Joker's henchmen. And I liked the reality of the whole scene."
Ok, so the new DVD has a new copy protection on it that my software cant bypass. So, I do a lil internet search and browse various nerd tech forums, all of which say, it cant be done. Some have said you can clone it, but with the protection cloned on the copy as well, but then they say they cant do it. Then someone says the only thing you can do is rip the movie from the disc, but not menus etc, then say they couldnt.
So I had a fuck about with my software to no avail. Then I downloaded a new software package that runs in the background. I then reopened my normal copy software, and copied as normal.
This method not only made a perfect copy, it also did what my copy software always does, and got rid of the copy protection and region coding on the copy.
Of course, I only do this for back up purposes, nothing illegal!
So there ya go, a new method of copy protection comes out today, and its already hacked by a novice like me!

Having just seen her play a butt-kicking secret agent in "Get Smart," and given that she gets good reviews as an actress for movies like "Brokeback Mountain" and "Rachel Getting Married," I actually now think that Anne Hathaway might be able to pull of playing Catwoman.

I just ducked out of work for a bit to pick up my copy. I picked up this edition. Best Buy had quite a few editions available not to mention they had the limited edition version with the Batpod as well as statuettes of Joker and Batman separately as well. Decisions, decisions!

They had plenty. I don't think they are all that "limited." I could be wrong though.
Yeah, it's Christmas time, no way will they be limited. I bought the blu-ray version. The Best Buy I visited had the standard DVD copies picked apart, but plenty of blu-rays. Perfect.
Bale will be back as Batman, but everything else about a third movie remains a riddle. Ever since audiences flooded movie theaters this summer to give "The Dark Knight" its record run at the box office, there's been talk about the Caped Crusader's next cinematic adventure. Namely, which villain (or two) from the rogue's gallery of Batman enemies will he be fighting, and who will be playing him or her? This week, attention was once again focused on the rebooted Batman franchise. Not only did Heath Ledger get a posthumous Best Supporting Actor Golden Globes nomination, but also "The Dark Knight" smashed the record for the most Blu-ray discs sold in one day this past Tuesday.
In spite of all this, very little about a third "Batman" movie is set at this time. The only thing that is certain now is Christian Bale is under contract to return as Bruce Wayne. Everything else is up in the air. No storylines approved. No one else cast. Most importantly, visionary director Christopher Nolan still hasn't officially signed on to make the film. This week Nolan addressed one of the main issues that is holding up development, namely that third installments in a series tend to be bad. Think "The Godfather Part III," "Superman III," and "Batman Forever," the third movie of the original series.
Of course, this lack of cold, hard facts has just kicked the rumor mill into overdrive. There have been scores of rumors that Johnny Depp might play The Riddler, to which he has done little to allay. While on a Florida radio show, Depp was asked directly if he was going to play the question-mark clad villain and he gave this cryptic response. "Oh yeah I heard about that. Not that I know of. It seems like it'd be a fun gig for a while, yeah."
And though there's also buzz about Philip Seymour Hoffman playing the Penguin, the real hot gossip seems to be swirling around the possibility of Catwoman making an appearance in Batman 3. Most recently, E! Online has reported that Rachel Weisz of "The Mummy" fame is being considered for the part. This differs from rumors earlier in the year -- fueled by the original Catwoman Julie Newmar -- that Angelina Jolie might be getting the nod.
And still others say that Maggie Gyllenhaal will be donning the cat cowl, which is a bit of a head scratch considering her character Rachel Dawes was blown up in the Dark Knight. However, Hollywood Newsroom claims that Gyllenhaal along with Aaron Eckhart have signed up for not one but two Bat-flicks. The theory goes that Rachel will have used one of her nine lives in the blast and she returns from the dead as the leather-clad feline crime fighter.
Of course, David Goyer, the co-writer of "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight," has gone on record debunking every one of these rumors. "It's all B.S.," he told MTV. "ALL of it."
So if that's true and nothing has been decided, then we might as well throw in our two cents. Here's one prediction that I'm willing to stand by. Christopher Nolan's version of Gotham City is filled with outsized characters but nothing that falls under the supernatural. So don't expect comic book villains like Mr. Freeze or Clayface to find their way into the next film. And if you suffered through "Batman and Robin", you'll understand that that's not a bad thing.
The Riddler and the Penguin, however, are merely mortal -- if extraordinarily evil -- men who wear weird clothes. When casting for The Riddler, the most important thing is that the character possess a fiendish intelligence. If Depp doesn't make the cut, then Edward Norton's brooding intensity might work. But if Nolan (or whoever directs Part 3) wants more charm than menace, then he could do worse than to tap Robert Downey Jr. Or if they choose to make the character purely wicked and venomous, Daniel Day-Lewis could knock it out of the park.
The Penguin is a trickier character to pull off. Somehow, you have to make a short, rotund guy in a tux seem threatening. Danny DeVito and a lot of makeup made it work in "Batman Returns." Phillip Seymour Hoffman would be a great pick, but if he weren't available, then Ian McShane might work. His ruthless and foul-mouthed character on HBO's "Deadwood" won him a Golden Globe award. Why he's not thought of for dramatic roles, Ricky Gervais actually did a great job as a bad guy in a guest spot on "Alias," and he could drop in a few laughs that the movies have mostly lacked. Another choice could be Richard Dreyfuss since he played Dick Cheney with such aplomb this fall in "W."
And finally, there's Catwoman. While it's easy to picture Angelina Jolie as Catwoman, somehow the choice seems too on the nose. Besides, why would she bother hiding her identity behind a mask when everyone can recognize her by her lips? Rachel Weisz is a great actress, but in the "Mummy" flicks she never really took part in the action. Kate Beckinsale might work. Thanks to all her work in the "Underworld" series, she already has the bodysuit. Another suggestion might be Rosario Dawson. She's fit, she can act, and she has a killer jaw line that would look great in a cat mask.
While we wait for things to get further sorted out with this franchise, Christian Bale is starring in a reboot of another beloved movie series -- The Terminator. He'll be playing the grown-up resistance leader John Conner in "Terminator Salvation." It hits theaters in May, but you can check out the trailer below.
Bought the DVD today so I'm going to watch it tonight I think.
I'd like to see Deathstroke in the new Batman movie. He's beloved by the comic book crowd, can beat Bats up, and would be a tough adversary. Bats would need to out-think the man who is the villain equivalent of him. Screw the traditional Batvillains. Penguin does absolutely nothing for me.

I dunno. A fatal OD following a starring role in a big budget blockbuster might be just the career boost Troyer needs to stay off VH1 reality programs.

Bane's only 'power' was that he was taking a steroid-like drug, Venom. He'd be no more difficult to adjust to the Nolan Batverse than Scarecrow with his fear gas or the Joker sans bleached skin.

the only trouble I could see with bane is that yeah, he's a tremendous physical challenge for batman, but the greatest bat-villains have generally been not necessarily physical but intellectual challenges. bane just plain isn't. now if you had a non-powered villain like the ones mentioned earlier acting as a sort of mastermind, it would make more sense.
The bottom line is this: Bane is just not that good of a character. He's a muscleman in a Mexican wrestling costume who's only claim to fame was being used in a big crossover and beating up Batman after Bruce was already physically and mentally exhausted.
But the Joker had some interesting aspects to begin with that Nolan could use to touch on the original character, while expanding him.
For example, as you point out, the Joker was once a prankster who robbed banks. Indeed, that is the way the general public, raised on old comics, the 1960s series and even the Burton film, think of him. The opening sequence of the movie took that persona and brought it into the "Nolanverse." There was something there for Nolan to work with.
It seems to me that there's nothing like that for Nolan to use with Bane. THerefore, the only way for Nolan to make Bane "work" would be to make him a completely different character than the one in comics. At which point, why bother using him, especially given the fact that no one outside of a small group of fans knows, or cares, about him?
Same could be said of Scarecrow, or any of a number of characters. Don;t be so close minded. The reason to use him would be the physical challenges, I'm sure Nolan could come up with the mental challenges as well. DK's writing and direction wasn't a fluke.
I admit that Nolan, if anyone, could "fix" the character. My only point is that Bane's a lame character to begin with and I'd rather see Nolan work his talent on a better character, one that hasn't consistently sucked.
Joker was a lame character at one point too. I never liked Bane, but I think his characterization in Gail Simone's new Secret Six series is genius. He's shown as a religious man with a strong sense of chivalry (it began as a joke but the last issue made it more serious). It's not exactly the kind of thing that would fit well in a Nolan movie, but it shows that the character has potential.

Has the Joker character evolved more from his beginning in the comic medium sure, but the Bane character is an infant compared, and to say a writer must wait for evolution in one medium before evolving a character in another is silly, you can take the next step or leap without waiting.

Not really. The Joker is an iconic figure, whose persona-even in the silliest of comic books-taps into some very powerful imagery that transcends comic books: the evil clown, the trickster god, the interplay between comedy and tragedy.
That's a large part of why he's always been the most successful bat-villain, if not the most successful comic book or comic strip villain, of the past 60+ years: he stands for something deep in our collective subconscious.
Bane has none of that. He's basically just an evil body builder.
Sure, Nolan could probably create an interesting character but he would probably have so little resemblance to the actual comic book character it would, in effect, be a completely different character. In which case, why not just create a new villian in the first place?
God help me, I can actually see what G-Man is saying. Plus, I agree with basams that Nolan could make it work.
The Nolan Joker is the product of years of comic book development, that while different, is still easily recognisable to his comic book counterpart.
Bane has had very little comic book development, so while he could be made interesting, its likely he would not resemble the Bane of the comic books (and Poo Dave would be gutted if Bane lost the S&M costume).
So basically, basams is right that Bane might work, but G-Man is right that it would probably not resemble the Bane of the comic books!
Just finished this moment watching Dark Knight. Apart from the Batvision, it was pretty good. Ledger's performance was very, very good. But the unsng acting ability in this was the guy who played Harvey Dent - Aaron Eckhart. He did a terrific job.
I guessed that Rachel was going to die, oddly enough. I also thought that Gordon was gooing to lose his family, but they made it.
Incidentally, having Bats goback to being a "villain" at the end might be a good lead-in for the much touted Superman/Batman movie.
Back to the Batvillain debate. If a third Batman movie is Dark Knight Falls, with Joker (played by Depp?) getting his neck broken in the Tunnel of Love, then do we have room for another villain?
I watched this tonight with my dad on him 50 inch plasma.
Holy fuck does this movie look good. The IMAX scenes, which were easy to tell since those scenes filled up the whole TV, were fucking beautiful. Since I got to watch it laying on a couch and not an uncomfortable theater chair I enjoyed it a lot more.
I officially love this movie now, you can stop bugging me about it.

Tada! It's time for some more news/rumors about the sequel to Christopher Nolan's hit acton flick "The Dark Knight."
According to an interview with executive producer Michael E. Uslan in The Courier Post, a new "Batman" film could be ready for release in 2011:
"Uslan will be onboard as executive producer for the "Dark Knight" sequel, which he estimates will be theaters by 2011. As for the identity of the next round of Batman's supervillains and love interests, Uslan remains tight-lipped. 'It's one of those deals where if I told you, I'd have to kill you,' he says with a chuckle."
Okay, it's not much, but at least it comes from a more credible source than most rumors we've read about over the past months. That's progress, isn't it?
Uslan's producing credits also include "Batman Begins," "The Spirit," "Constantine" and even Tim Burton's 1989 "Batman."

ANNES, France - Like other superhero fans, Sam Raimi agrees that "The Dark Knight" raised the bar for every comic-book movie to come.
Raimi figures it can only benefit the next chapter in his "Spider-Man" franchise, the first installment of which had been the top-grossing superhero flick until "The Dark Knight" blew it out of the record books last year.
"The Dark Knight' was brilliant, and the audience seemed to love it, and I think it rightfully raises expectations for the other superhero pictures," Raimi said in an interview at the Cannes Film Festival, where his horror tale "Drag Me to Hell" played. "Which is a great thing for everybody. For the filmmakers, for the audience."
Raimi said he expects to have the script for "Spider-Man 4" in hand within a few weeks. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire is writing the screenplay for the film, due in theaters in May 2011.
The director said he has discussed the story with Tobey Maguire, who stars as Peter Parker and his alter ego Spidey.
"I'm interested in making the best of the Spider-Man' movies ever, and Tobey's really excited," Raimi said. "I'm really looking forward to that collaboration."
A part has been written for Kirsten Dunst, and Raimi said he hopes she will return as the love of Peter's life, Mary Jane Watson.
After glowing reaction for the first two movies, critical response for "Spider-Man 3" was so-so. Right after the third movie came out, Raimi was undecided about returning for more, but he said he did not like "thinking about a world where somebody else was making the Peter Parker story. I love that character."
Raimi said the break he took to make the smaller "Drag Me to Hell" has refreshed him for the return to Spidey, adding that he wanted to "take some of the more modest approach I've learned from this film into the Spider-Man' film. I think it's exactly what it needs."
He also said he was game for the challenge of satisfying fans clamoring for bigger and better after "The Dark Knight."
"Yes, they have higher expectations," Raimi said. "The best thing I can do is be true to my character and work harder to bring him to the screen with as much truth and drama and a real conflict that means something to me. And have him grow in a realistic way to either overcome that conflict or be swallowed by it.
"I'm glad those expectations are up. I'm excited about that."
i actually think "iron man" is a better "do it like this, you shitheads" movie for raimi and company to follow. ... in fact, iron man might be a better spidey movie than the 3 spidey movies! upbeat, fun, colorful, dynamic, etc.
i like that he's rethinking a vision for the fourth film, since i was not a fan of the first three, but i hope him taking cues from "dark knight" does not equate a darker, "more realistic" type of film for the spidey franchise. i don't think that'd work well for the character, or the (younger) fans.

SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - Holy start date, Batman fans! Actor Gary Oldman, who starred in the recent blockbuster Batman movies let it slip on Friday that a new flick about the crime-fighting superhero is set to start filming next year -- but you didn't hear it from him.
Oldman, who played Commissioner Gordon in director Christopher Nolan's "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight" was promoting another movie, thriller "The Book of Eli," at the giant Comic-Con convention in San Diego when he was asked about plans for a third movie in Nolan's hit series.
"We start filming the next 'Batman' next year, which means it won't come out for another two years," he said, before adding in a sly tone, "but you didn't hear that from me."
No details of a third Nolan "Batman" flick have ever been announced and a Warner Bros. spokeswoman declined to comment, which only added mystery to intrigue.
Still, it doesn't take money-hungry Batman nemesis The Joker to figure out that Warner Bros., which makes and releases the Batman flicks, would be thinking about a new one. After all, the first two movies combined took in nearly $1.4 billion at global box offices.
Hey folks, Harry here at 30,000 feet flying from Chicago to Austin! Love Wifi on planes! Now you may have noticed the DVD COLUMN is not up today. I've been doing extensive travel recently - and just haven't had the time to write it, but when I get home I'm going to start cracking at it.
Though none of that is why you clicked on this story. When I realized that I could write and post a story from the sky - I knew that this story that I kinda stumbled into on this bout of travel... well, it's the sort of thing that is so potentially cool - if it happens. I have to say upfront that the nature of this story is a rumor, not because I don't have solid sources, I do... but because it could simply NOT WORK OUT. That happens sometimes. It is something that the production team are "considering" - but it is an extremely costly process, but one that I believe we would all love to see happen.
The THIRD chapter of Christopher Nolan's Caped Crusader's saga could very well be FULLY shot in IMAX, not IMAX Digital - but the beautiful, stunning IMAX that we saw pieces of THE DARK KNIGHT in.
Now this is something that I'm sure a lot of you will feel is a no-brainer. Nolan blew us away with the IMAX sequences in that film - but it was a very tough process to work in. Mainly due to the limitations of how many available real IMAX rigs there are. Not only that, but lenses had to be created, adapted and god forbid one broke down. Part of the reason that Nolan went forward with INCEPTION first - besides taking a creative break from the cape and cowl adventures... was possibly to create a few new IMAX cameras made to his specs. Once again - the cost of shooting an entire feature film on IMAX... the stock, the time it takes to reset, to load, to move the cameras... Well... it is daunting, but as Nolan proved with DARK KNIGHT - the difference is stunning.
