First of all, Mxy, thank you for actually expressing an intelligent opinion on the matter.

Second, I want to clarify that I'm not neccessarily saying that this place should take itself seriously. I'm just saying that a balance can exist. The balance would still allow for everyone to have a free-reign-run of chaos...as they are prone to do. But, at the same time, making it viable for new people to come here without immediately being accosted with it. Some people out there that would actually have something positive to add to this community, while growing to understand the sly subtely of humor around here. I find that more new posters are run off simply because they absolutely cannot have a moment of serious discussion on any subject. Of course, the natural fallback reaction is "If they can't handle it, then they shouldn't be here". This is, in my opinion, a total phallacy and a kneejerk reaction. Not everyone is the same, and some have to find an accepting base before they are able to tolerate the gay-fuck-chaos-orgy that thrives within the parameters of these boards. Not everyone comes from the DC Boards and know or understand the personalities that make up the RKMBS.

I would never...NEVER...want the RKMBS to become totally "serious". Fuck, I would just leave if that happened. But, all things in moderation. That's my point.

I built my whole "persona" on the crap that Pro complained about.

I agree with everyone....seriously.

Pro is right.....evrything in moderation. Sometimes jokes go too far and too long (except with rex). All great artists need to reinvent themselves every once in awhile. Also don't dish out insults and punishment if you aren't willing to take a ribbing(for her pleasure) as well.

With that said.....serious discussion happens on a daily basis here so I'm not too worried about that. Even if some douchebag derails a thread in lets say the Comic Forum, if the topic is good enough it will get back on track on it's own and it always does.

And of course I agree with mxy and Jaburg, a little havoc and chaos never hurt anyone. Most importantly laughter is the lifeblood of this place. Keep the laughs coming.

Prometheus - I agree with everything you have said here. You bring up many valid points. As you already know, maturity levels here vary. It does distress me when I see a thread I or another has created with a fine premise behind it, only to watch it fall into the abyss of endless sexual jokes and put downs of individuals here.

Such is the nature of the beast, though I am glad you pointed these issues out. I, too, have been aware of these things being prevalent here.

also Pro made a good point about klint and Jim Jackson.....they have awesome senses of humor. I've always said that about them. They can take a joke and give pretty good too. They are definitely a little bitchier than the other men though.

i agree in that the nonsense and general lighthearted approach to everything is what got me here. everything is a joke, but, i love to laugh. as with everything i think it can go too far, but i don't know that if it wasn't what it is, that i would even be here. there are times it gets agitating, or frustrating but then i stumble across somthing funny and it's all good again. get your zingers in when you can, take your lumps when you get'm and enjoy is what i try to do. and somehow along the way, i managed to find links to a few kick ass sights, got a few cool pics.

I-Man, the regulars here have no more or less right to post here than you do. It's freedom for anyone to post on these boards, and you shouldn't allow anything to keep you from that if you want to join in. There will continue to be those that do what they do. But, if it bothers you, ignore it. You were here before ninety-percent of these people. And, I wondered why you and Bibbo dropped out of sight for so long. Stick around this time. You might have fun.

As for a clique, it's only natural that friendships are born between a selection or groups of posters. But, keep in mind, cliques are only that to those that feel they are part of it. For example, I pre-date PJP, PC, Klinton, etc. However, there are certain running jokes, gags, and cliques within their "groups" that I do not understand or participate in, mainly born from chats and the OT-Forum. However, when, say, Grimm, Sneaky, or Joe Mama start up, I pretty much understand most of their "jokes". Whether I participate in it is my choice, and I do not feel any more or less a part of this community either way.

So, Harley, I-Man, even Beardguy....if you don't feel "included" in a particular sect of posters, then, don't worry about it. It makes no difference one way or the other. You are your own individual self, and should take what you want from these boards at any time. No group of posters has any more or less sway than the individuals themselves.

Just saying. Stick around and do what's fun. That's the point...

I'll say this, about the Writer's Block forum...

Coming here to these boards at Rob's suggestion after he had deleted the JLR thread on the DCMBs has probably been my best experience in my years online.

However, when I first came, the Writer's block forum, or hero headquarters as it was known back then, welcomed myself and the other immigrants with what appeared to be open arms. But afterwards it felt like a VERY closed and a very elitist forum. I cannot speak for my fellow JLRians, but I myself did most certainly not feel welcome at all.

I really don't know how the mood is there now as I seldom venture in there anymore.
I'm not even holding anything against anyone who uses that forum, not at all. The open welcome simply seemed hollow, indifferent and utterly useless.

On another, and more serious note. I'm very much opposed to the targeting of individual posters here. I'll use the "Oakley affair" as an example.

It was like the entire message board turned against a single poster and harrassed him in every possible way because of a few jokes. Yes, I'm aware that it was Oakley himself that didn't like one particuliar joke and that he did indeed fan the flames, making it worse. But the amount of "hate" for lack of a better word, astounded me.

It seemed, nay, it WAS uncalled for.

Some people can take it, others can't. I think this is one the few things that posters here should realize, or at least try to realize.

I don't really venture into the Writers Forum anymore. Not neccessarily because of what you stated. But, because, as you say, it's only a select group that even write there anymore. No one seems to want to try to do anything different, and thus, stagnation sets in. I, and a few others tried to find a way to bring it around. But, in the end, I realized I really had nothing more to say/write in that particular group and was attempting to capture a flame that had been burnt into the ground. So don't feel bad Chant. But, if you seriously want to write, then, go write. All it takes is one person with a good idea.

And, given what I've seen, I can see how only a few particular types of people would want to stay here. That's what I was talking about. I usually only start threads when I notice an annoying trend. Like Snarf's absurd dedication to a pretty average science fiction flick that I can't remember the name of(someone should start a thread about it to remind me). Or 15 page threads started just to say "hi" to someone.

I really only come around here in spurts nowadays, but I would estimate that around 95% of what's posted here is "useless", and the 5% that isn't generally gets buried pretty quickly.

Frankly, it's become blatantly obvious that Velo was carrying this place. Without him, it's like the last few seasons of Cheers.

many a times have threads been made that ment for a serious discusion, even in the deep thoughts forem, that ended up shortly after being created turning into a flame war or "joke."

i also agree with the constant hounding upon people, especailly newbies whom posters have run off because of the overwhealming flow of bashings. i remember the time i appeared here, migrated over from the DCMBs, and you all ran me off. i can back of course because robby baby couched me and gave me the crash course on how to "survive" here. i will say one thing the RKMBs are like none other baord i have ever seen! its great but ruff and rothless too.

that unfortunately is the common placed reason why only a meer of us post here. those that do post here run into that same problem, but that is what happens and i dont mind either. i love everybody! i try not to take sides. i stay outta most of the gangups. for the most part im happy with it. i have made some good freinds here like MisterJLA, PenWing, Sideways,

and a bunch others. some i carry off the board to chat too others i havent. i do sometimes hinder my chats to some people because of the constant flaming and the constant gossipy gangup nature some poeple have here. some you just cant trust. such is life in the real world to, so to speak.

i agree that sometimes "jokes" are takin to far and some actually offend people no matter if they are ment as "play" or not.

i also agree on the organization of the threads needs handled a lot better.

it seams that we have a problem of moderators geting to freindly with posters, so to speak. im not blaming anyone or pointing fingers. again im saying this in a general. i have no problems with moderators posting to threads and makein their own as well. i have no problems of them voiceing their opinions either. i do however have a problem with the moderators useing their "power" to single out and flame posters. sometimes it seams moderators forget about their "jobs" and dutys here. and we all know that mods are safe from any wrath their might be. this board isnt one for banning people, shoot this is where all the bannies come too! which i think is a good and bad concept.

i dunno. i love this board. something do need a change tho, just slightly.

Also the double standards from some of those people is quite humorous!

All the things that have been noted as being "negative" are the sole purpose of these boards creation.

Dont forget the main reason Rob created these boards was to get all the trouble makers away from DC, so is it any wonder most of us are arseholes.

What one person says is a worn out joke, another person says is tradition.
What one person says is annoying, another person says is tradition.
What one person says is gay, another person says is rex!
The minute you start spouting off about whats bad about these boards, thats when you automatically become a target of some of the biggest internet arseholes you have ever witnessed.

I'll let you all into a secret, one of the reasons the sports forum is rarely attacked is because I prefer not to moderate it in the same method as the media or deep thoughts forum, meaning you can pretty much do what you want in there.
That basically means a lot of good topics dont get swamped by spam, and if at any time they do, I just go with the flow & let it slide as thats what these boards are about!
Of course I cant speak for the other sports mod, but as far as I am concerned, the forum is not above the usual hijinks of other forums.

If you wanna be serious, join a serious message board!

You make some valid arguments, in a way.

However, those are exactly what I'm talking about. A handful of posters think certain things are "tradition". Whereas, everyone else, plus any prospective new people, consider it oft-putting. And, double-standards don't exist if both standards are represented equally.

Stating that the boards were "created" by arseholes does not justify the behaivior. A rapist stating that he knows raping someone is wrong does not, in effect, clear him of the moral and legal ramifications of it. Just because something is "expected" does not mean it has to be.

You say that people should find a "serious message board", whereas I ask why must it be one or the other? Why cannot a balance be found within these forums? Why cannot certain forums/threads be respected for serious, or semi-serious conversations and debate, while others exist to be ejaculated over with the nonsense? Why is one person attacked incessantly if they voice opinions that contradict the group mentality?

I'm not asking for another fucking Athanon. If I wanted pretentious pseudo-intellectual conversations all the time, do you think I would fucking come here? And keep coming here for five years, as well as moderate a forum? Of course not. All I was saying is that a balance should be found, and the ability to attract new blood should be welcomed....not berated or visciously driven away. That's all.

See, things is, I do think that if someone wants to have a serious discussion about something it'd be smart for them to go somewhere else. A lot of guys here have fun with the bsamsing and llancing and general trolling, and I think it would be unfair to take it away from them. There aren't many places online where you can make a hundred alts to piss off another poster and not get banned. The whole point of this place is that we're free to do stuff like that, and if we have members that wanna behave more maturely, fine, you can do so too, as long as you don't mess with the natural order around here. It's not just that we trolls came first, it's also that, as I said before, it's the "free for all" what makes this place special.

I have to disagree with this "Assholes came first" mentality/platform. It's illogical and ill-suited for a message board that wishes to avoid stagnation, inbreeding, and finally, obscurity.

I mean, that is, assuming Rob wants to evolve these boards into a larger crowd. He pushes the Poster Phoenix, and the recruiting of new blood. So, I can only assume that's what he wants. But, again with the moderation and balance, I also know that no one really wants to put up with a "Shazamgrrl" type that is only interested in one agenda, or, a "jacklildeath" that is intolerant of every other opinion but their own. There ARE, however, hundreds of "Lor"s, "I-Man"s, and "Harley"s out there that could be a great asset to this community, and bring many positive aspects....as well as someone new to talk to.

As with every single thing I've ever posted on these boards, it's all just my personal opinion. I respect your right to have a different one...

I disagree with the whole idea of this place being full of cliques. There may be some dominant personalities.....but if other people want to contribute and be a part of the fun all they have to do is post away. Start a new thread.......make fun of somebody in order to help them build character. That's what I do.

that's where I respectfully disagree....the "Lors" "I-Mans" and "harleys" have every opportunity to contribute......and whenever they do it is always usually sometimes golden. I hope that they do contribute more and they should all know that they have a friend in PJP.

i think if pro wants serious anal discussion, he should check out nightly.net. i think what pro means is he wants joking when he wants joking and seriousness when he wants it. much like rob. when things were a free-for-all and we moderated ourselves this forum grew and grew. now that we have moderators who moderate each forum to their tastes it has stagnated. its cool to see how pro considers people "elitist" and "gang mentality" yet you look at random thoughts depending on who writes a thread it gets moved. what had set this board apart from other boards was the fact that the people were all smart enough to realize that if you didnt like a post skip it, if i was for instance having a conversation with rob about wether hulk hogan was the greatest ever, and ROY BATTY posted that he was a big orange bastard, then jokes ensued and the conversation continued, along with the jokes. because there may not be people that cant stand to have a joke made in their serious thread, well they need to get over it.

but really, as far as your whole list goes its basically elitist bs, for everything you list that you dont like, obviously there are people who do like them, or they wouldnt be doing them. so if this board is flooded with that which you consider offensive, doesnt that tell you that is what the board is about?

talk about bandwagons, the humor and the "no rules" attracted many here, now that the board has grown many of those people wanna run it and give it rules.

Maybe there could be another way, change the font color or something instead of moving a post out of a thread, for example GMANIMEANYOUGODDAMNIT. This is specifically about the Deep Thoughts forum because it's the only one I get moderated the fuck out of in. I don't like to be too serious so when I post a "deep thought" I sometimes like to mask it in assholery or bad comedy. It's my nature, I do this in real life also. Just because I look like a cunt doesn't mean I'm not trying to make a point or add something to the discussion. So maybe I make a fake dead fetus ID in order to make a new argument about abortion by taking the opposite side of what I am arguing. That should be obviously a serious post in need of at least letting it stay where it is put. I'm making an anti-abortion point by posing as an aborted fetus that is pro-abortion. It's dark comedy AND something to discuss. AND it isn't straightforward boring shit. I like how Burg moderates. He puts objective thought into his decisions.

As for the boards, I love it here. I took everything wrong twice and left forever twice and now I'm back forever twice. The annoyances/traditions are like friends waving from across the street to me. It's comforting to know that there really are complete asshole dorks who act and think a lot like I do. This is my After School Special for learning how to deal with difficult personalities. My life is so much less stressful since I came here the third time. Once I finally GOT it I have been able to apply the easy-going nature to m real life. People can call me a hermaphrodite or whatever they want and I'm just okay with it. This place has helped me through a difficult time in my life and brought me to a healthier, happier state of being.

Someone (Nowhereman?) mentioned 'if you don't like a thread, skip it.' That's goddamn right. We're all (mostly) adults here. Nobody ought to be the PC police making sure things are kiddy friendly. Bitching about reading stuff you don't want to is like when people sign up for Livejournal Communities called, for example, "BAD TASTE" that post in large fonts that lj-cuts are for pussies and THEN have the audacity to bitch that they got fired for the grotesque obscenities being on their moniters at work. mods aren't there to move/delete, they're there to spark discussion, as you say david does. the "pretty buttons" are just part of the deal. its not just to get rid of stuff that makes people sad with tears of pain, but also to move threads to places where they'd be most appropriate.

However I am of the opinion that if it is a moderator forum all moderators should be allowed. Also that you should not use the forum to talk about people who can not read or post a defense or retort.

Can I just point out that I was never "invited".
Somebody here told me about the said forums existance and I asked Rob if could be made a member so I could refuse to post there.
It was all part of a joke, an ongoing joke at that, that Rob has constantly refused to give me membership.
He is correct though that I do not desire membership into that particular forum!

My issue is that the forum should indeed be out in the open, and if anyone wants to keep their thoughts private, just PM each other.

I also think that being asked to write regular columns and not being able to headline them yourself is crap.

Yes, I used to write regular RAW reviews, and yes, I told Rob I did not want them headlined every week, but my personal belief is that all mods should have this ability should they desire it.
We all know how certain people abused their abilty by constantly front paging stuff they liked, knocking off new headlines within an hour of it being posted, so we know that some people definetley use their powers to their own benefits rather than being the "fair" people they are sposed to be!

Once again, like the mod forum, all mods should be equal, not some more than others!

If you choose not to use those perks that come with the job, its then your own choice, and if you abuse those perks then your modship should be revoked, not just the perks.

Yeah, I too join in on the "___ is gay!" jokes. But, in the end, love it or hate it, it's a repetitive theme that has simply taken over.

BSAMSing Threads : You know, the very fact that bumping old threads up for no apparent reason other than to clutter a forum is named after a specific poster (Britneyspearsatemyshorts) should tell people that really only one person can get away with it as a joke: BSAMS. Everyone else that does it is simply either trying to "be" him, or, is just following the crowd. Come on. Get an identity. Be yourself. Otherwise, you're just a pale imitation of the man himself.

Attention Whores : I could spout off a list of posters that simply create useless threads to try and get attention. You know who they are. You know if you're one of them. It's one thing if it's just a one-time, having fun kind of thing. It's another if it's a constant stream of pointless "Hey look at me! I need validation! Your opinion of me is important!" threads where nothing is served and nothing is gained. You know who you are.

Pick the Victim : Whether it be Rex, Chris Oakley, or any other, there is a serious habit prevalent on these boards of going after a single poster in every possible fashion, and in every possible thread. Now, don't get me wrong. I'm certain some deserve it. However, it's one thing for, say, PJP to tool on Rex consistently. It's almost damn expected, in that sense. It's an entirely different matter for everyone else to jump on the bandwagon and just lambast the guy with sock jokes, for no other reason than to be "included". Group mentality is a dangerous, pathetic notion that is as real here as it is in society. As with BSAMSing threads and being an attention whore, just get an identity. Be yourself, and be unique. Otherwise, you simply blend in with the crowd. And that, in my opinion, is boring.

Everything is a joke : Unless it's in the Deep Politics Forum...and even then because G-Man and Wednesday are able to sift out the pointless threads...everything in every forum here is a joke. And, I use the word "joke" quite lightly. Generally, ninety-percent of the supposed "wit" that's added to serious/semi-serious discussions are pointless trolling that simply tries to gain them attention, or a pity-laugh. Sometimes...and fuck, I know this will fall on deaf ears....it's okay to allow a serious discussion. If you like comic books, and want to discuss comic books, then, the comic book forum is exactly for that. Certain posters feel that they have to remind everyone, though, that comics can be made fun of, and serious or fun discussions should be broken up with consistent "jokes". And, I just use the comic forum as an example. It's in every forum, in every thread. At no point can anyone express a serious, or valid point about any subject without someone coming along and....quite predictably, I assure you...trying to make a joke about the subject, or belittling the person trying to discuss it. People, really...it's okay to have serious or purposeful talks here. We have plenty of other threads to have fun in, or whatnot. Not every single thread has to be a joke. Really. Swear. Believe that.

"He's thinking on his own....GET HIM!!" : This is a follow-up to my last point. If someone is critical of anything that goes on here, in the least, the mob mentality turns against them. For example, I'm certain any number of response could...and will...be made about the points I've listed here. If it isn't the oft-norm inferiority sarcasm of "Hey, he's trying to take a message board seriously", then, it will be the creation of a mirror/insult alt, with mocking dialogue to accompany....or, the most common....is to take excerpts from the posters content and use as a sig line to make fun of the individual, claiming some form of "victory". Predictable, assured, and, in the end....only funny to those that have their own inferiority issues. Of course, another response would be an outlash of "Who are you to criticize?" and the like. Also, expected and predictable. In the end, the point that should be considered is, why can't it be discussed or debated without it turning into personal insults? Why skip over the points, just because you either have no serious opinion on the subject, or, wrongly feel singled out, as if the criticism is being leveled at you personally? I think the RKMBS would be better served on a whole if individuals were allowed to speak their minds without the fear of reprisal from those that have inferiority issues, and wish to be the "cool" one. High school mentality will only serve you just so long.

See, these are my gripes and opinions about the repetitive nature of these boards. It certainly isn't universal. And, it is in no way brought about by anything that's personally happened or occured with me. It's all observation and feedback from spending the last five years here. As well as, the things I think need to be addressed if we ever expect to expand the roster of posters beyond MrJLA, and his three-hundred alt-ids.

Now, let's hear from others. What are your gripes or complaints? Don't be afraid to express them. Sure, some simpleton is going to come along and get a new sigline off of you. But, let them. In the end, your voice is heard, and they are still the same, tired old joke.

That was the point, I thought. Sometimes being silly is necessary, it promotes good health, you know. But the majority of the thoughts should take a more serious tone than what has been said in the past. That's some of what I got out of this thread. We all need humor, but it should be good humor

BSAMSing Threads : You know, the very fact that bumping old threads up for no apparent reason other than to clutter a forum is named after a specific poster (Britneyspearsatemyshorts) should tell people that really only one person can get away with it as a joke: BSAMS. Everyone else that does it is simply either trying to "be" him, or, is just following the crowd. Come on. Get an identity. Be yourself. Otherwise, you're just a pale imitation of the man himself.

Attention Whores : I could spout off a list of posters that simply create useless threads to try and get attention. You know who they are. You know if you're one of them. It's one thing if it's just a one-time, having fun kind of thing. It's another if it's a constant stream of pointless "Hey look at me! I need validation! Your opinion of me is important!" threads where nothing is served and nothing is gained. You know who you are.

Pick the Victim : Whether it be Rex, Chris Oakley, or any other, there is a serious habit prevalent on these boards of going after a single poster in every possible fashion, and in every possible thread. Now, don't get me wrong. I'm certain some deserve it. However, it's one thing for, say, PJP to tool on Rex consistently. It's almost damn expected, in that sense. It's an entirely different matter for everyone else to jump on the bandwagon and just lambast the guy with sock jokes, for no other reason than to be "included". Group mentality is a dangerous, pathetic notion that is as real here as it is in society. As with BSAMSing threads and being an attention whore, just get an identity. Be yourself, and be unique. Otherwise, you simply blend in with the crowd. And that, in my opinion, is boring.

Everything is a joke : Unless it's in the Deep Politics Forum...and even then because G-Man and Wednesday are able to sift out the pointless threads...everything in every forum here is a joke. And, I use the word "joke" quite lightly. Generally, ninety-percent of the supposed "wit" that's added to serious/semi-serious discussions are pointless trolling that simply tries to gain them attention, or a pity-laugh. Sometimes...and fuck, I know this will fall on deaf ears....it's okay to allow a serious discussion. If you like comic books, and want to discuss comic books, then, the comic book forum is exactly for that. Certain posters feel that they have to remind everyone, though, that comics can be made fun of, and serious or fun discussions should be broken up with consistent "jokes". And, I just use the comic forum as an example. It's in every forum, in every thread. At no point can anyone express a serious, or valid point about any subject without someone coming along and....quite predictably, I assure you...trying to make a joke about the subject, or belittling the person trying to discuss it. People, really...it's okay to have serious or purposeful talks here. We have plenty of other threads to have fun in, or whatnot. Not every single thread has to be a joke. Really. Swear. Believe that.

"He's thinking on his own....GET HIM!!" : This is a follow-up to my last point. If someone is critical of anything that goes on here, in the least, the mob mentality turns against them. For example, I'm certain any number of response could...and will...be made about the points I've listed here. If it isn't the oft-norm inferiority sarcasm of "Hey, he's trying to take a message board seriously", then, it will be the creation of a mirror/insult alt, with mocking dialogue to accompany....or, the most common....is to take excerpts from the posters content and use as a sig line to make fun of the individual, claiming some form of "victory". Predictable, assured, and, in the end....only funny to those that have their own inferiority issues. Of course, another response would be an outlash of "Who are you to criticize?" and the like. Also, expected and predictable. In the end, the point that should be considered is, why can't it be discussed or debated without it turning into personal insults? Why skip over the points, just because you either have no serious opinion on the subject, or, wrongly feel singled out, as if the criticism is being leveled at you personally? I think the RKMBS would be better served on a whole if individuals were allowed to speak their minds without the fear of reprisal from those that have inferiority issues, and wish to be the "cool" one. High school mentality will only serve you just so long.

See, these are my gripes and opinions about the repetitive nature of these boards. It certainly isn't universal. And, it is in no way brought about by anything that's personally happened or occured with me. It's all observation and feedback from spending the last five years here. As well as, the things I think need to be addressed if we ever expect to expand the roster of posters beyond MrJLA, and his three-hundred alt-ids.

Now, let's hear from others. What are your gripes or complaints? Don't be afraid to express them. Sure, some simpleton is going to come along and get a new sigline off of you. But, let them. In the end, your voice is heard, and they are still the same, tired old joke.
