RKMBs
Posted By: Wonder Boy The RKMB glossary of terms - 2006-08-27 2:39 AM
Frequently on RKMB, I see terms used repeatedly that I only have a vague understanding of, and occasionally almost no understanding at all of the intended meaning of the term or rhetorical device (including emoticons).

I think it would be useful to have a topic that defines those terms, that can be referenced when these words are used repeatedly in other topics.

A term I've seen a lot the last few days:

knee-jerk

Anyone?

A few other less debate-type words, and more on the playful fun or insult side of discussions here...

Utilizing dictionary.com :

knee-jerk
adj. Slang
1. Easily predictable; automatic: “quick, easy laughs and knee-jerk responses” (New York).
2. Reacting spontaneously in the expected manner: a knee-jerk cynic.

3. (Informal: ) reacting according to a certain habitual manner; unthinking: a knee-jerk liberal.

[Origin: 1895–1900]

If there's some aspect of the term that was missed, feel free to add to that.

I'd consider it a badge of honor to not know what "PWNed" is. It's stupid webnerd lingo that isn't even ironically funny anymore. Using it is essentially announcing to the world that you're trying way too hard to be cool.

The one true way that I know of to be cool is to be an individual in a world that seems to demand conformity of it's people. Be true to yourself, and not try to be like others just to fit in.....

Another frequently used word on RKMB:

ad hominem

1. appealing to one's prejudices, emotions, or special interests rather than to one's intellect or reason.
2. attacking an opponent's character rather than answering his argument.

[Origin: lit., to the man]

3. Appealing to personal considerations rather than to logic or reason: Debaters should avoid ad hominem arguments that question their opponents' motives.

[Latin : ad, to + hominem, accusative of hom, man.]

Usage Note: As the principal meaning of the preposition ad suggests, the homo of ad hominem was originally the person to whom an argument was addressed, not its subject. The phrase denoted an argument designed to appeal to the listener's emotions rather than to reason, as in the sentence The Republicans' evocation of pity for the small farmer struggling to maintain his property is a purely ad hominem argument for reducing inheritance taxes. This usage appears to be waning; only 37 percent of the Usage Panel finds this sentence acceptable.

The phrase now chiefly describes an argument based on the failings of an adversary rather than on the merits of the case: Ad hominem attacks on one's opponent are a tried-and-true strategy for people who have a case that is weak. Ninety percent of the Panel finds this sentence acceptable.

The expression now also has a looser use in referring to any personal attack, whether or not it is part of an argument, as in It isn't in the best interests of the nation for the press to attack him in this personal, ad hominem way. This use is acceptable to 65 percent of the Panel.

·Ad hominem has also recently acquired a use as a noun denoting personal attacks, as in “Notwithstanding all the ad hominem, Gingrich insists that he and Panetta can work together” (Washington Post). This usage may raise some eyebrows, though it appears to be gaining ground in journalistic style.

Ad hominem was all the rage in the Deep Thoughts section awhile back, although I haven't seen it used as much recently.

I think you're right. As I've observed, when someone kicks someone else's ass in an online discussion, he's "owned" by the ass-kicker.

"Get me a Coke" on RKMB is another way of implying someone got their ass kicked, and is the kicker's slave. (At least from what I've been able to pick up. )

I thought is was based on O'Reilly, on The O'Reilly Factor, where he says to people with wacked out ideas "Have another glass of Kool-aid" (referring to the Jonestown massacre, where a whole religious cult drank cyanide-laced Kool-aid and died, because of their fanatical faith in Jim Jones, and his defective belief that they were all about to be arrested and taken away by the armies of the Antichrist.)

Posted By: Animalman Re: The RKMB glossary of terms - 2006-08-29 7:51 PM
I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think the O'Reilly came up with the concept of drinking kool-aid as meaning buying into an ostensibly outlandish theory or argument. I can recall that being a part of popular vernacular since before the O'Reilly Factor debuted.

Interestingly enough, the Guyana cultists didn't actually drink Kool-Aid, they drank Flavor-Aid. Kool-Aid is just the more recognizable brand.

"I win again" = a phrase commonly used when a poster wants to declare a hollow victory in a one player game that they very recently fabricated in their own mind with its own secret set of rules, usually fabricated after poster cowers into a corner when they run out of comebacks (if any)

Muppet Babies:
Gonzo: "I'll run for president of the moon."
Piggy: "But Gonzo, nobody lives on the moon."
Gonzo: "Really? Then I'll win by a landslide!"

alt ID = catfishing before catfishing was a thing
