However, they seem to have a hell of a starting rotation. I believe Ledezman, Maroth, and Bonderman will be the Tigers' starters for this seires. The way both teams have played so far this year, I think it will be a 2-1 series.

That was a good game. I'm disappointed in the Tigers, though. Not because they lost, but because I'm not happy with managements decision not to start bringing up and demoting certain players. A shrewd move before this series could have had a huge impact tonight. I'm not saying the Tigers would have won. I just think the game would have been more interesting. Bondo should come out and dominate tomorrow.

I actually believed the Tigers could win this one. This should go down as one of the easier sweeps for the Yankees this year.

It's eight times. FOX & ESPN made damn sure to let the viewers know thoughout both the Saturday and Sunday games. Funny how they don't mention Red Sox players who've been hit. Funny that they forget Tanyon Sturtze's role in starting the bad blood that continues between the Red Sox and Devil Rays - little scumbag. I'm a Red Sox fan watching my hated rivals get pimp-slapped by the AL's other minor-league-team-parading-as-a-major-league-team, and even I'M concerned! The next time we clash, your people will chant "1918!!!", but we'll respond "Royals swept you!!!" and how will you respond to THAT???

It's cause you guys won the series last year. You have upset the balance of power in baseball. All that you've known is no more.

All I know is, if I were Cashman, I'd line up the entire team after they've showered up and got dressed in their street clothes. Then I'd walk down the line and punch each team member in the groin, aiming for the spot where dick and balls meet (the most painful place to be hit). As I did it, I'd scream "YOU'RE COSTING ME MY FUCKING JOB, YOU CUNT!!!" at each person. I'd save Jason Giambi for last, though, just so (while he was doubled over) I could take one of his baseball bats and go "Untouchables"-style DeNiro on him. I'd be saying "THIS IS HOW YOU HIT A BALL, ROID-BOY! LIKE THIS! AND THIS!! AND THIS!!!" Over and over again. Might as well get your $85 Million's worth.

Let's just say if Cashman was fired, he wouldn't have trouble finding work. He almost left last year. I like Cashman and as a fan I will always be loyal to him 'cause he was a big reason for the success we had these last few years.

I'm not saying anything against Cashman. I'm just saying what I'd do IF I WAS Cashman.

If I had a choice to be a Tigers fan or Yankees fan, I would choose the Tigers this season. A good young team that is up and coming with young talent.

I have to disagree. While the Yanks are greatly underachieving this season(Sheffield, A-Rod, and a few members of the bullpen being the only exceptions) and don't appear to be the best of the best at this point, they are still much better than the Tigers(no disrespect intended), and as long as they have the kind of money they do, they will at least be competitive. As PJP said, they are a very old team, but Bernie Williams, Kevin Brown, Tino Martinez, Ruben Sierra, Tom Gordon, Mike Stanton and Paul Quantrill are all in the final year of their contracts. So they'll have a chance to get younger through free agency this offseason. That's about as much of a rebuilding process as you'll see from them, and about as much of a rebuilding process as they need, truly.

They don't have much of a farm system(and, despite the number of high picks they've had recently, neither do the Tigers), and that's been the same for years, so it's not going to stop them much. Teams like the Yankees and Red Sox simply operate on a different level than everyone else. They don't need great farm systems, and if the payroll difference between the top teams and the bottom teams continues to grow larger(creating more "small market" teams that surrender their in-house stars to free agency), they probably won't ever need them.

Besides, even if they wanted to "rebuild" the way you're suggesting, they'd have a really tough time going about it. How are they going to "get a lot of stuff for their players"? Most of their contracts are untradable. Nobody's going to take Giambi. Almost no-one can afford to take on Randy Johnson, Derek Jeter or Alex Rodriguez. Perhaps the only teams that can are hated rivals(Mets and Red Sox). The only thing they can or should do is take the money they'll be getting with Kevin Brown, Bernie Williams, etc. gone(or, in Bernie's case, resigned at a significantly lower price) and try to go after some of the big name free agents that will be available. Tim Hudson and B.J Ryan will probably be resigned by their respective clubs, but they'd be ideal for Yankee stadium. Even with Randy Johnson's velocity down and Sheffield's bum shoulder, they still have a pretty good core of guys in A-Rod(29), Jeter(30), and Matsui(30). Pavano(30) is too good to give up on yet, as well. They won't exactly need to bring in a whole new team.

Clemens has been the recipient of very special treatment in Houston(not having to travel with the team on the road, having his own extra-sized locker space, a personal training room all his own, etc), and that kind of thing is very un-Showalter. Since Buck has a lot of clout in the organization(he's the reason John Hart still has his job, literally and figuratively), if he said no to Clemens, he'd probably get his way.

I was watching the game tonight after I logged off here. My opinion of this game aside, I noticed something. It was fucking LOUD in Yankee Stadium. Now, I figure that the noise was due to the Mets fans going apeshit for their team's chance at sweeping AND the Yankees fans going apeshit when their team pulled off the victory. But it make me wonder, which team do the Yankees fans more passionately about facing: Their city NL rival (The Mets), or their AL East rival (The Red Sox)? Why so? Or is there another team that the Yankees fan chomp at the bit to face?

Personally I hate the Red Sox and no one else. Lots of Yanks fans hate the Mets and Sux equally......not me.

The Red Sux lost to the Rangers yesterday 6 - 5 Foulke sucks. That now makes losses 3 out of the last 4 games. It's not even the All Star break and the Sux have started their famous late year slide. Schilling is sloppy and strugling in his rehab assigments. Terry Francona's nose was given it's own zip code. And as bad as the Yanks have played this year we are only 4 games out.

An office husband/wife is a member of the opposite sex from the office who you hang out with the most. The three of us all hang out a lot - she's one of the few women I know who can match me drink for drink - and we lucked out cuz we all live within 10 blocks of each other, so in and out of the office we hang. I've gotten into many Yanks/Sox fights with her and he's always chiming in about his sucky-ass Orioles - to which we will stop and tell him to piss off before we start fighting again.

Ah, see, this might've been the worst news of the night, 'cept I spent my evening at NYU Med with my sister who was brought in unconscious. She's ok now, thank G-d, and drugged up to the nines and sleeping at my place tonight, so it all good, but there is a cute Yanks/Sox story that happened in the middle of this nightmare that y'all might appreciate, so here it is...

So, like I said, lil sis had a rough night and was rushed to the ER with her boyfriend, Joe, in tow. While she is being hooked up to machines and an oxygen tank Joe and I are trying not to freak out in the ER waiting room. Flash forward 4 hours later. In between waiting and going back to talk to her doctor for all those hours I have been talking to this sweet college kid also waiting for someone. Returning from a trip from lil sis's bedside when she was starting to recover - around 10 ish - I turn to Joe and say, "Give me some good news - tell me the Yankee score." He checks his blackberry and looks up at me and says, "Are you sure you want to know?" He hands me the blackberry and I actually yell, "Jesus Christ! 17-1?!?!" To which little college boy (who had NO Boston accent - he actually uses the letter "r") says, "YES!" I turn to look at him and say incredulously:

"You're a Red Sox fan?!"

LCB: "I grew up in Boston."

Me: (pause) "Just when I was starting to like you."

I don't know if it was my tone, the way I said it or the look of horror on my face, but he starts laughing, I start laughing and we both cannot stop. We lean into each other cracking up and it was the only point of levity in the entire night. When my sister was finally discharged LCB and I hugged and wished each other luck.

So, that makes this twice in one week I've hugged a Sox fan...but I was under a lot of stress!

Yanks beat Red Sox 7-4

BOSTON -- The New York Yankees acquired left-hander Al LeiterSox. -- and most of the money to pay him -- from the Florida Marlins and scheduled him to start Sunday's series finale against the Boston Red Sox.

The Yankees will be responsible for about $400,000 of the $2.8 million remaining on Leiter's 2005 salary, general manager Brian Cashman said Saturday. There were no other players involved in the deal.

"We'll take a chance," he said. "It wasn't going to hurt us in terms of player talent, and it wasn't going to cost us a lot."

The Yankees are desperate for pitching help with four starters on the disabled list. Kevin Brown, who has been on the DL since June 16 with a back strain, will return to start Monday.

"It's a very thin market," Cashman said. "In the next two weeks, we need to hold serve, or tread water ... until our reinforcements can come back."

Cashman conceded that Leiter was no longer a front-line starter but held out hope that he would be an improvement in the back of the rotation. Tim Redding was called up from Triple-A to make an emergency start on Friday, and the Yankees lost 17-1; he was designated for assignment to make room for Leiter.

The Yankees have used 11 starters this season -- most in the AL.

The Marlins designated Leiter for assignment on Thursday after he went 3-7 with a 6.64 ERA this season. He is due to make $8 million this year despite struggling to pitch like he did in his first stint with the team, when he won 27 games and helped the Marlins with the 1997 World Series.

"Disappointed would not explain how I felt. Then I found out from my agent that teams were interested in me," Leiter said in a statement released by the Yankees. "This is where I started in '87, and 21 years ago I was drafted by the Yankees. To come full-circle, I'm very excited."

The Yankees drafted Leiter in '84 but traded him to Toronto in 1989. He signed with the Marlins as a free agent before the '96 season and threw Florida's first no-hitter that year, but he was traded to the Mets during the Marlins' post-World Series payroll purge.

Leiter, 39, won a career-best 17 games for the Mets in 1998 and pitched a two-hit shutout against Cincinnati to clinch the NL wild card in 1999. With the Mets bullpen depleted in Game 5 of the 2000 World Series against the Yankees, he went 8 2/3 innings before running out of gas and losing 4-2.

Leiter was 10-8 with a 3.21 ERA for the Mets last season. He is 158-127 with a 3.76 ERA in his career and 1-3 with a 4.50 ERA in 17 career postseason games.

"The fact that he's pitched in New York, he's pitched in championship games, for both Miami and the Mets. The fact that he's had that experience, we think we can catch some lightning in a bottle here," manager Joe Torre said. "The experience is a big part of what helps when you pitch for our ballclub."

New York has been searching for a starter because Brown, Carl Pavano and Jaret Wright are all on the disabled list. Chien-Ming Wang joined them there on Thursday, a day before he was scheduled to start against Boston, with inflammation in his right shoulder.

Brown started the season on the DL because of a back strain, was activated April 17 and went 5-6 with a 5.48 ERA.

I am thrilled to death about this.....I wanted Leiter last year in the off season. He is a big game pitcher and this was a huge move for the Yanks. He will thrive in NY and get a big second wind. He should dominate today against the Sux.......mark my words.

BOSTON (AP) -- Randy Johnson is pitching like the ace the New York Yankees wanted -- and not a moment too soon.

With the Yankees rotation falling apart, Johnson struck out 10 in 6 1/3 innings to win his third straight start, and Alex Rodriguez homered on Saturday to lead New York to a 7-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox.

"Randy gave us a big lift today," said Rodriguez, who hit a two-run shot to spark a six-run third inning. "It was very big for us. He's our horse."

One day after the Yankees lost 17-1 behind Tim Redding, an emergency starter from Triple-A, Rodriguez followed Gary Sheffield's double with a homer over the Green Monster. Johnson (10-6) allowed four runs on eight hits and three walks and the Yankees won for the second time in the four-game series.

Tom Gordon got five outs, and Mariano Rivera pitched the ninth for his 22nd consecutive save. Robinson Cano had three hits -- his fifth straight game with two or more.

"With our starting rotation beat up as it is, these two games were important for us to win," manager Joe Torre said after the Yankees won for the ninth time in 11 games to pull within 1½ games of Boston in the AL East.

All-Star Matt Clement (10-3) lasted just 2 2/3 innings, allowing six runs on five hits and five walks. Johnny Damon singled in the sixth to extend his hitting streak to 28 games -- the longest in the majors this season and tied for fourth-longest in Red Sox history.

Johnson had the 206th double-digit strikeout game of his career. Only Nolan Ryan, with 215, has more.

It was a big boost for a staff that has four starters on the disabled list. Redding was called up for an emergency start Friday after Chien Ming-Wang went on the DL, and the Yankees didn't have a starter for Sunday until they traded for Marlins castoff Al Leiter on Saturday.

"We'll take a chance to see what we have there. Hopefully, it will be an upgrade from what we've been trying," said general manager Brian Cashman, whose team has used an AL-high 11 starters. "In the next two weeks, we need to hold serve or tread water ... until our reinforcements come back."

Kevin Brown is scheduled to be activated from the DL to start Monday, and Carl Pavano is still a couple weeks away. Jaret Wright is also on the DL and could be back next month; Wang could miss the rest of the season.

So the Yankees needed a strong performance from Johnson to avoid losing ground to the World Series champs -- and they got it.

Meanwhile, Clement struggled.

"Kind of hard to win a game when you give one of the greatest pitchers in baseball a 6-0 lead," he said.

Edgar Renteria went 1-for-5 with four strikeouts, and not even a perfect ninth inning from former ace Curt Schilling could inspire the Red Sox.

"He was crisper," Boston manager Terry Francona said. "That was encouraging to see."

Clement escaped trouble in the second inning when he walked the first two batters, then got three consecutive strikeouts to end the inning. He got Derek Jeter and Cano out to start the third before the next eight New York batters reached safely.

Sheffield doubled on a hard line drive off the Green Monster, then Rodriguez hit his 25th of the year over it. After consecutive walks, Bernie Williams singled in one run and Tino Martinez walked to reload the bases.

John Flaherty doubled off the wall in left to score two more and chase Clement. Jeter singled off of Jeremi Gonzalez to make it 6-0 before Cano hit a fly ball to left to end the inning.

Mark Bellhorn homered in the bottom half to make it 6-1, then Manny Ramirez hit a solo shot to lead off the fourth. Kevin Millar walked and, one out later, Doug Mirabelli singled him to second.

But on Bill Mueller's single, Mirabelli kept his head down rounding second and didn't see that Millar was being held up by third base coach Dale Sveum. Mirabelli was caught in a rundown for the second out, and Bellhorn struck out to kill the rally.

After the game, Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein and pitchers Bronson Arroyo and Tim Wakefield were scheduled to join professional musicians on stage in a concert at Fenway. ... Several of the Red Sox coaches went to the top step of the dugout to cheer for Johnny Pesky, who returned to the ballpark for the first time since the death of his wife, Ruth. ... Flaherty's bases-loaded double in the third broke an 0-for-17 slump. It was his third extra-base hit of the season. ... Clement's five walks matched a season high. He threw 83 pitches to get eight outs, just 43 of them for strikes. ... David Ortiz started at first base for just the second time when Boston wasn't playing in an NL park. He joked before the game that he sent his glove home to the Dominican Republic.

One question: what are they going to do when all these players come back from the DL? Carry a 15-man pitching staff? Trade all these overpayed, recently injured players - to whom? The Yankees seem to be in full panic mode, acquiring anyone and everyone they can get their hands on and damn the consequences.

I just don't see how aquiring Leiter is a panic move......he thrives in NY. Maybe it's bias but I always have been a big fan of his.....so i amexcited about that......and if everyone gets healthy they will have a surplus of starting pitching......somebody making a pennant push will always be looking for another starter.

i think, starting pitcher wise, the yankees are in some sorta panic mode. pavano, wright, brown, wang... all out. thats a huge hit. and, then, there's also the flipside of that coin -- that pavano, wright, and brown have not-yet-really made their expected, or hopeful, impact yet. reaching out for a guy like leiter, despite his poor showing so far this year, shows that they're looking for a new direction and a new spark.

I know what you are saying Boss and I more or less agree with you. The only thing I will say is .....last year we had Vazquez be one of the most dominating pitchers in baseball.......the first half of the season ....so yeah we had some problems this year but at least it's now instead of games 4, 5 ,6 and 7 in the ALCS. I am feeling real good about the rest of the year. Out of al those pitchers....Pavano, Wright, Brown or Wang.....we only need 1 or 2 to get healthy and be productive......cause mark my words.....Leiter will dominate the second half of this year...

Way for Franklin to ruin what was a great outing by Mussina and some good follow-up by Rodriguez. I'm surprised Torre let him in such a close game, judging by his overall record. Some minor news in my neck of the woods:

1) Alan Embree has been designated for assignment. Buh-bye. I liked him but I can't deny that he's been atrocious this season.

2) We traded RP Scott Cassidy (lousy appearances while called up) to San Diego for back-up OF Adam Hyzdu. I liked Hyzdu last year. I was sad to see him get traded this year. But, in light of our signing Gabe Kapler (Yay!), and our desire to see what Rule 5 draftee Adam Stern has to offer, this deal makes ZERO sense.

3) We acquired IF Tony Graffanino (and a player to be named later) for two minor leaguers. This should improve us at second base. Chances are, Mark Bellhorn isn't long for this team. Which is a shame. I love listening to my brother's hate-filled rants about Bellhorn...

every relief pitcher was tired or being saved (in the case of gordon). franklin was, sadly, the only one really available.

and, truth be told, it was only one really unfortunate pitch. he did well (enough) for the first two outs.

Answer: Less than twenty-four hours after he cleared waivers, Nomo was signed to a minor league deal. I suppose, in some way, this makes sense. The Yankees are desperate for starting pitching and probably won't do much of anything by the non-waiver trade deadline. Nomo has major league experience and can handle the pressure of playing in tough situations, like in LA, Boston, and now New York. Maybe this is the best thing for both teams.

Word around the campfire is that Timlin didn't want to be the closer, so they decided on Schilling because they thought closing would build his arm strength without causing too much stress on his ankle. I say whatever - bring up one of our young studs for set-up and then use Timlin and Myers as co-closers, like they did with Lee Smith and Jeff Reardon back in the day.

middle/long relief is much more curt's style. one of your starting 5 gives up four runs in the first three innings? bam, curty can hold'em to two additional runs, or less, until the 7th. thats priceless and shouldn't have been so passed over.

Red Sox's Foulke shut down for season

Boston Red Sox right-hander Keith Foulke will not pitch again this season, ESPN's Peter Gammons has confirmed

The struggling reliever returned to Boston on Thursday for an examination on his left knee, another setback for the World Series champions as they scramble to stay in the playoff race.

A day after falling out of first place in the AL East for the first time since July 18, the Red Sox sent Foulke home from the road trip to see team physician Thomas Gill.

Foulke was a star of Boston's championship run last year, nailing down all four victories in the Series sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals. But he's struggled most of this season, posting a 5-5 record and a 5.91 ERA while saving just 15 of 19 opportunities.

Foulke had arthroscopic surgery on July 7 to repair cartilage in his left knee. He missed two months while recovering, and has not pitched in a save situation since returning from the disabled list Sept. 1.

Foulke last pitched on Sunday against the Oakland Athletics, entering the game when Boston trailed 12-0 and going two scoreless innings.

Curt Schilling took over as the closer July 14 and was 4-3 with a 5.18 ERA as a reliever, saving nine of 11 chances. Since Schilling moved back into the rotation on Aug. 26, Mike Timlin has saved seven of nine opportunities.

But Timlin gave up the lead on Wednesday night, allowing three runs and recording just one out as the Red Sox lost 7-4 to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

The defeat dropped Boston into second place in the division race, a half-game behind the New York Yankees. The Red Sox also trailed the Cleveland Indians by one game in the AL wild-card race heading into Thursday night's games.

Boston was idle -- its first off-day in a month -- before a weekend series with the Baltimore Orioles.

The Red Sox signed Foulke in the wake of their bullpen meltdown in Yankee Stadium in the 2003 playoffs, giving him a contract that could pay him $26.5 million over four seasons. He earned it last year, when he was 5-3 with 32 saves and a 2.17 ERA.

But his on-field struggles this season -- coupled with a personal problem he has alluded to but not described -- have made him cranky and caustic. He was booed off the Fenway mound after giving up a ninth-inning grand slam to Cleveland's Travis Hafner on June 28, then said, "I've always said the hardest thing is to come in here and face my teammates [rather] than worry about Johnny from Burger King booing me."

Foulke also told the San Francisco Chronicle last week that he was moving out of the city to avoid the attention.

"People don't understand there's times when we want to be private," he told the paper. "There's a lot of times people come up and they get in your business. ... It's one of the reasons that for next year I am relocating. I'm moving out of the city so I can be with myself a little more."

At the plate, the important contributions were made by Gary Sheffield, who hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning, and Robinson Cano, who hit a two-run shot in the seventh, to help the Yankees in their come-from-behind 8-4 victory yesterday over the Toronto Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium.

("Bernie Williams!" the fans chanted. "Bernie Williams!")

On the mound, the star of the afternoon was pitcher Chien-Ming Wang, a rookie like Cano, who worked seven innings, only one of them bad, to improve to 8-4.

And on paper, the important numbers showed that the Yankees' victory - their 12th in their past 14 games - matched Boston's victory at Baltimore to keep the Yankees tied with the Red Sox for first place in the American League East with one week remaining in the regular season as the ancient rivals battle for the divisional pennant and the wild-card playoff berth.

("One more year!" the fans chanted to Williams. "One more year!")

But when it was over - with the team packed for its seven-game trip to Baltimore and Boston, the rookies dressed as cheerleaders as part of their initiation and the music of "Last Dance" playing on the clubhouse stereo - the biggest gathering in the happy room was not around Sheffield, Cano or Wang.

It was around Williams, who went only 1 for 4 with an infield hit. In 15 seasons, Williams has established himself as the third-best center fielder in more than a century of Yankees history, behind only Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle.

Batting .251 at age 37, his skills fading, Williams may be near the end of his career, or at least the Yankees phase of it. He has no contract for next season.

Because yesterday's game was the last home game of the regular season, and playoff participation is not a certainty for the Yankees, the crowd of 55,136 turned fan appreciation day into an unofficial Bernie Williams appreciation day.

Along with the chanting was a sign hung from the mezzanine directed at George Steinbrenner: "Boss: Bring Bernie Back." The fans cheered Williams's every move, and the cheering intensified before the bottom of the eighth inning, when the scoreboard showed a video of Williams highlights.

Alex Rodriguez, leading off, stayed out of the batters box long enough for teammates to coax Williams from the dugout for a wave to the fans. "He didn't want to go out and take a little bow," Manager Joe Torre said. "He looked at me to see if it was O.K. I gave him a little nod."

Over the previous 10 seasons, Williams had helped the Yankees make the playoffs every year, four of them ending in World Series championships. With 2,213 hits in a career of excellence and elegance, he is one behind DiMaggio, who is fourth in team history behind Lou Gehrig (2,721), Babe Ruth (2,518) and Mantle (2,415).

Discussing what might have been his last home-field appearance at the Stadium, Williams called it "very emotional" and "a far cry from when I came for the first time here in '91. Chanting my name the whole game. It was very cool; it was very cool."

When he started his career, could he have imagined such a scene as the one yesterday?

"Never in my wildest dreams," Williams said. "The years have gone by. I've been able to stay with the team.

"All in all, the career has been great, a great ride. I'm enjoying every moment of it. The older I get, the more I'm enjoying it."

Williams said he checked with Torre before taking his curtain call because "I was trying to make sure I was within protocol."

"They were not going to stop," Williams said of the fans, who stood numerous other times to cheer him. "It was a great moment, and I appreciate it a lot."

As he left the field, Williams shook his teammates' hands, declined to be interviewed on television and threw his batting gloves and wrist bands into the stands.

As for the possibility that it was his last appearance at Yankee Stadium, Williams said: "Being human, yeah, it has to cross my mind. But, as a team, we have a lot more things to worry about."

From the perspective of experience, Williams discussed Cano, who hurt the team with a two-run fielding error on Saturday and was thrown out on a base-running blunder in the fifth inning yesterday.

"He has been one of our great players this season," Williams said. "Flashes of greatness and then doing things that are not as good. But I think his attitude is exemplary. He made a mistake. He didn't get down on himself. He got back up."

Torre, discussing Williams before the game, said: "He's easy to like. A pretty solid citizen."

Regarding a return next season, Williams said: "I'd rather not talk about that right now. Our focus is on the end of the season.

"I've got to take care of the present now, and hopefully the future will take care of itself. In my mind, I'm here to help."

Gary Sheffield, who has been slowed by a strained left thigh, returned to right field for the first time since Sept. 7. Bubba Crosby played left field for Hideki Matsui, who was the designated hitter.

Actually, every one of these guys have "never pay for a drink in any Boston bar" status. But you're right. The fact that Schilling allowed himself to be maimed in order to pitch in his second ALCS outing (and in the World Series) elevated him to being untouchable in the eyes of most fans.

I agree....I feel it should be Arod hands down.....but the Big Papi fans point to his numbers in the last 2 innings in every game......pretty impressive.

Seriously, if this guy was playing on any other team no one would mention him. He's a commodity since he can hit from both sides but he's average at the plate and his defense, while fine, is not what everyone tries to make it out to be.

Sure, he's had some timely hits but damn, you play over a hundred games a year in this lineup and you're bound to find a nut.

In short, he's overrated.

Posada has had a subpar season this year, but his OPS ranking among qualifying major league catchers(those who had at least 325 at bats) the last 5 years is pretty impressive:

2005: 10th(out of 27)
2004: 2nd(out of 23)
2003: 1st(out of 25)
2002: 3rd(out of 21)
2001: 3rd(out of 22)
2000: 3rd(out of 19)

Only Mike Piazza and Ivan Rodriguez have better offensive numbers than Posada in that span, and the disparity between Posada and those immediately following him(Jason Varitek, Javy Lopez) is significant enough to make up for whatever defensive shortcomings he might have.

I'd rather have Varitek right now, but to this point Posada's career has been better.

Oh, and Posada looked very bad in the batter's box tonight.

And I was very impressed with Robinson Cano tonight, though I think he's being overhyped by Yankeedom.

Boston Can Clinch Final AL Playoff Spot With Win or Cleveland Loss

BOSTON (Oct. 1) - Mike Mussina had a new role with the Yankees. Instead of preparing to start the regular season finale against Boston, he was in the visitor's clubhouse at Fenway Park, taping plastic over lockers to protect them from champagne.

Mussina's next appearance will be in Game 1 of the AL playoffs.

The Red Sox hope Jaret Wright flops Sunday as Mussina's replacement. The Yankees made the switch after clinching their eighth consecutive AL East title Saturday with an 8-4 win over Boston.

"It's not easier," David Ortiz said. "When you take anything for granted in this game, the games comes and eats you up."

The Red Sox (94-67) lost their chance to win the division on Saturday but have several ways to get the wild card and maintain their hopes of a second straight World Series championship.

They would win the wild card if they beat the Yankees on Sunday or the Indians (93-68) lose to the AL Central champion White Sox. If Boston loses and Cleveland wins, the wild card would be decided in a one-game playoff Monday at Fenway Park, with Matt Clement pitching for the Red Sox on three days' rest.

"Let's hope it works out where we don't have to even think about that," said Clement, who felt good throwing before Saturday's game and isn't worried about the short rest. "There's more combinations that can happen where I don't pitch Monday."

Curt Schilling can clinch the playoff berth when he starts Sunday.

"I think he's the best big-game pitcher of our generation," Kevin Millar said.

Schilling is just 7-8 with a 5.98 ERA, missing much of the year with an injured ankle. He hasn't been at his best since winning Game 6 of the AL Championship Series against the Yankees and Game 2 of the World Series against St. Louis after undergoing unique ankle surgery to keep a tendon in place and having blood seep onto his right sock during both games.

"I was talking to him during the game, and the way I heard him talking it reminded me when he pitched that one game in New York last year where he was bleeding to death," Ortiz said. "He's very positive. And, you know him. When he feels that way, look out."

He may not have to pitch against the Yankees' top lineup. Some regulars may get to rest.

"It turns into two and three because you rest Monday and start again on Tuesday," Jason Giambi said. "That's huge."

Gary Sheffield wants no part of that: "I'm playing every day. I still want to win."

If the Red Sox win the wild card, they would start the AL division series Tuesday at Chicago. The Yankees were waiting for their first-round foe to be determined: Cleveland or the Los Angeles Angels.

Mussina preferred to stand on a chair and attach the plastic with duct tape than to talk about his next start.

"Ask me later," he said. "I don't know who we're playing."

The Red Sox are just focused on Sunday.

"We feel good about ourselves," said Tony Graffanino, who had three of Boston's seven hits. "I don't care how you get in. We'll take it any way we can get it."

Of course, they'd rather get it Sunday.

"Hopefully," Clement said, "we'll see what we're used to seeing out of Curt Schilling."

Yankees' winning formula: Hard work, team work

BOSTON -- Not far from Fenway Park, at the corner of Boylston and Massachusetts, a local organization provided free stress tests to anyone who stopped by its sidewalk tables. I only saw one person take advantage of the pregame freebie consultation: a New York Yankees fan wearing his road gray Bernie Williams jersey.

This was late Saturday morning, before the Yankees won Game Two of their weekend cage match against the Red Sox and clinched the AL East title outright when New York's new best friends, the Chicago White Sox, beat the Cleveland Indians. Now the Yankees can relax (at least, until George Steinbrenner's latest rabies shot wears off), and Red Sox manager Terry Francona can take a seat at the makeshift Boylston stress clinic.

Once again, the Yankees soaked another clubhouse floor and walls with sprayed bubbly. They've won so many of these things (eight consecutive division titles and counting) they could conduct a seminar on proper cork-popping technique. But this one, said Yankees manager Joe Torre "is the best of all of them. ... This has to be the most special."

It was special enough that Torre wore sunglasses in the Yankees dugout -- not because he needed them, but because he didn't want anyone to see the tears in his eyes as starter Randy Johnson protected New York's five-run lead by striking out the side in the sixth inning.

Torre gets chick-flick misty at the drop of a baseball cap, but this was different. It was different because in his 10-year Bronx tenure, the Yankees have never had to work harder for a division title. Injuries. ... The Red Sox. ... The constant, sometimes-suffocating pressure that comes with wearing pinstripes all made for a celebration to remember in the cramped -- and wet -- visitors' clubhouse at Fenway.

"This club has made me very emotional this year," said Torre, who didn't seem in a hurry to switch from his champagne-doused t-shirt to something in the non-alcohol variety.

You couldn't swing a bottle of Korbel brut without hitting a Yankee who wasn't having an Oprah moment. There was closer Mariano Rivera, who was cheered by Boston fans when the Red Sox were presented their 2004 World Series rings before the April 11 home opener. It was Rivera who had blown a ninth-inning Yankees lead in what could have been, should have been the AL Championship Series Game 4 clincher. Instead, the Red Sox won that one, and three more to record one of the greatest playoff series comebacks in the history of sports.

So guess who abandoned his usual game-day routine and spent the first couple of innings in the Yankees' dugout cheering on his teammates? It was Rivera, who usually stays for the national anthem before returning to the clubhouse and later the bullpen. But this time, Rivera couldn't help himself.

"I was almost telling him to shut up," said Torre, who wanted Rivera to conserve his energy for something important, like pitching.

Rivera, who arguably is the Yankees' most valuable player this season, was where he belonged in the ninth inning: on the mound, duct-taping the Red Sox's AL East hopes shut.

"A lot of people counted us out," Rivera said. "We showed we are capable of coming back, and we did. It's special. Before, it wasn't like that. Before, we had big leads. Now, we have to fight for it."

The Yankees were 11-19 and nine games out of first on May 6. By mid-July they led the division, but fell behind and trailed by four games as recently as Sept. 10. Now this: another title and, for the moment, retribution and satisfaction.

"We had a lot of guys who stepped up," said shortstop Derek Jeter, the guy Torre describes as the Yankees' "Gibraltar."

One of those guys is Johnson, whose arrival via free agency made the New York rotation the deepest Torre has had as Yankees manager. But that was before Yankees starters began dropping like they had heat stroke. Through it all, the 42-year-old Johnson was the only one who never spent time on the disabled list. He finished the regular season with a 17-8 record. Five of those victories came against the Red Sox.

"When I came here, I was told there's two seasons: a regular season and a postseason," Johnson said. "There's not too many teams I've played for who expect to get to the postseason. This team has been there enough that they expect to get to the postseason every year."

Body language says everything. Even when Johnson gave up a first-inning bomb to Manny Ramirez, or squirmed out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the second, he walked slowly off the mound and toward the Yankees' dugout as if he were walking down the driveway to pick up the morning paper.

"But there's a heartbeat in there," Torre said.

And it was thumping hard in those first few innings, and again during the champagne shower. After all, this is why he wanted to be a Yankee.

Baseball and its agonizingly long regular season doesn't allow for many flukes, and this AL East Ironman race was no exception. The division's best team, which also happens to be baseball's most expensive team, earned its latest East title by a margin as thin as a blade of Fenway infield grass. The perk? Even if Torre shows up at home plate Sunday in a pair of boxers and forfeits the game because his team popped one too many bottles of Korbel the night before, the Yankees still will own the division because of a better season record against The Nation.

Meanwhile, the Red Sox are stuck in stress mode. A win Sunday means they're the wild-card winner. But it won't be easy, even with Jaret Wright replacing scheduled starter Mike Mussina.

"Oh, we're going to try to win," Torre said.

They always do.

2) While I'm not happy about the way the AL East panned out at the end, I am happy to see that both the Red Sox and Yankees are making it to the postseason. I know 99% of the boards disagree with me, but it's my opinion.

4) In my humble opinion, George Steinbrenner should've allowed his people to do their jobs and get Beltran. This offseason, I can understand making a run at Johnny Damon. What I don't understand is the idea of the Yankees OR the Red Sox making a run at AJ Burnett, especially after the way his season ended and the outburst that followed. I do not think that he's able to handle the non-stop pressure that comes from playing in these two baseball-obsessed markets. He should go to Washington or (shudder) Toronto or some other team that can be competitive while not under 24 hour scrutiny. The guy that Boston and New York should go after is Kevin Millwood who pitched deceptively well in Cleveland, is used to pitching in a high pressure city (did I mention that Philadelpians boo their kids' little league teams and probablt eat their young? I didn't? Oh...), and excels when he's NOT considered "the man". Make him the #2 or #2 like he was in Atlanta and Cleveland, and he does well.

Strangely enough, this doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would. The last month of the season, I watched Boston stink up the place. At a time when they should've been sweeping most of these teams, they were lucky to escape with one win out of three. They played about 30 games in a row and it was obvious that they were burned out. So maybe they best thing for them was a quick playoff exit. Plus, the only team that can say they made it to the World Series AND unseated the Champs are the White Sox, who boasted the best record in the AL and won when it really counted. That counts for something.

Keeping with my realistic/optimistic tone (and throwing in my standard pompous remark), remember that the Patriots won their first Super Bowl, didn't make the playoffs the following season, and then whipped off two more titles. GO SOX!!!

NEW YORK -- John Lackey took over as the Los Angeles Angels' scheduled starter for Game 4 of their AL playoff series against the New York Yankees on Sunday night after teammate Jarrod Washburn got sick.

"Washburn has a throat infection and a fever, and he just will not be able to pitch tonight," Angels spokesman Tim Mead said.

Lackey, a 26-year-old right-hander, was to be pitching on short rest. He started Game 2 in Anaheim on Wednesday night, allowing two runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings, walking five and striking out three. He threw 98 pitches.

Bartolo Colon, the Angels' Game 1 starter Tuesday, had been slated to travel back to California on Saturday to get ready for a possible fifth game Monday.

Los Angeles had a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series and was looking to close it out and earn a berth against the Chicago White Sox in the AL Championship Series. Game 4 originally was scheduled for Saturday but was postponed by rain.

Lackey was 14-5 with a 3.44 ERA during the regular season, finishing third in the AL with 199 strikeouts. He made one start on three days' rest, a playoff tuneup at Texas on Sept. 30. He threw five shutout innings and got the win, striking out four and walking one.

Washburn, a 31-year-old left-hander, was 8-8 with a 3.20 ERA during the regular season.

New York's scheduled starter for Game 4 was Shawn Chacon. Mike Mussina remained in California to pitch a possible Game 5.

I don't see the Mets trading Beltran to the Yankees. What would the Yankees give in return? I think Beltran will either stay a Met or be part of the trade to Boston for Manny.

Speaking of Manny, I wouldn't rule him out as a Met. I see him getting traded for pitching (mostly), and then the Red Sox go after Matsui, Giles, or another outfielder to play behind Ortiz. But I can also see him staying in Boston.

Konerko as a Yankee or Red Sox? Intriguing...both teams could stand to be shored up defensively (and offensively) at first, allowing their sub-par defensive option (Giambi and Ortiz) to DH.

I think both teams will go after AJ Burnett, no matter how bad an idea I think that is. I'd prefer to see one or the other make a run at Millwood, who pitched better than his record.

Bowa to become Yankees' third base coach

Larry Bowa accepted the New York Yankees' offer to become the team's third base coach Thursday.

A former manager of the San Diego Padres and Philadelphia Phillies, Bowa said he's prepared to work for Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, who doesn't hesitate to second-guess his coaches.

"You'll be on the hot seat. You don't like it, don't take the job," Bowa, who just completed his first season as a baseball analyst with ESPN, said recently at the World Series. "Everybody's got a boss -- I don't mean that [as in] 'The Boss.' Everybody's got a higher-up that you have to account for, and that's the way it is."

Bowa was a five-time All-Star as a player, and he managed San Diego in 1987 and 1988, and Philadelphia from 2001-04. He was a third-base coach for the Phillies (1988-96), the Angels (1997-99) and Seattle (2000).

"If another organization had called me, I'd have probably told them 'No thanks, I like what I'm doing,'" Bowa told the New York Daily News in a phone interview last weekend. "What happened in Philadelphia kind of turned me off to it all. I thought I did a pretty good job -- we were over .500 three of the four years I was there except for one year when we missed by one game. And then for it to end the way it did, I'm just sort of down on it now.

"But the Yankees, that's a special circumstance. I'd be very selective right now, certainly, but the Yankees are one team that I think I'd enjoy being a part of," Bowa added.

Luis Sojo has been the Yankees' third-base coach for the past two seasons. He's likely to be asked to move to first base if Bowa is hired to coach third.

"That's a demotion," Sojo told The Post of possibly being asked to vacate the third-base post to become first-base coach. "I don't know. I got to see what they are going to do. When I find out, I will make a decision. I like third base and I didn't do a bad job."

Like Torre, Bowa thought the Yankees were worn out during their playoff loss to Los Angeles after a regular season in which they didn't clinch a playoff berth until the next-to-last game.

"The Yankees had to fight all year to get in," Bowa said. "When you're fighting all year and fighting all year, it wears you out a little bit."

Rodriguez Is the Complete M.V.P.

The debate about whether Alex Rodriguez or David Ortiz was more valuable percolated through a tense baseball season. It was the complete player against the clutch hitter. It was a passionate city's superstar against another adoring city's icon. It was a personal twist on the rivalry between the Yankees and the Boston Red Sox.

When the 28 ballots, from two baseball writers in each of the 14 American League cities, were revealed yesterday, Rodriguez narrowly beat Ortiz to capture his second Most Valuable Player award in three seasons. The smooth third baseman from the Yankees defeated the burly designated hitter from the Red Sox.

Rodriguez finished first on 16 ballots cast by members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America, second on 11 and third on one for 331 points. The system awards 14 points for first-place votes, 9 for second, 8 for third, 7 for fourth, and so on down to 1 point for a 10th-place vote. Ortiz garnered 11 firsts and 17 seconds for 307 points. Vladimir Guerrero of the Los Angeles Angels, who was last year's M.V.P., secured the only other first-place vote.

After Rodriguez won, he said that he did not expect the award to reduce the scrutiny of him. With a $252 million contract and a reputation as perhaps the elite player in the game, Rodriguez said he would probably always be judged differently.

"We can win three World Series," Rodriguez said. "With me, it's never going to be over. My benchmark is so high that no matter what I do, it's never going to be enough. But I understand that."

The Yankees witnessed a more comfortable Rodriguez during his second season in New York this year. He hit .321 with a league-leading 48 homers, along with 130 runs batted in, 124 runs scored and a .421 on-base percentage to help the Yankees rebound from a dreadful start and win the A.L. East. Boston finished second, although the teams had identical 95-67 records.

Ortiz's season included a succession of splashy hits and ended with his batting .300, with 47 homers, a major-league-best 148 R.B.I., 119 runs scored and a .397 on-base percentage. Ortiz had statistics superior to Rodriguez's in clutch hitting situations, but Rodriguez was better in a majority of statistical comparisons and played strong defense, too.

"There are probably like 15 or 16 offensive categories, if you want to be a baseball junkie," Rodriguez said. "I'm not sure, but I think I won in 10 or 12 of those. But I think defense, for the most part, being a balanced player and also taking away a lot of runs on the defensive side, was a major factor."

Clearly, Rodriguez's victory was one for the everyday player over the everyday hitter. He played in all 162 games, made just 12 errors at third base and even stole 21 bases. Ortiz played 10 games at first and was Boston's full-time designated hitter. No designated hitter has ever been named M.V.P.

"This is an A-Rod day in New York," George Steinbrenner, the principal owner of the Yankees, said in a statement.

Ortiz had a chance to win the M.V.P. because of his dramatic hits. The statistic known as "in late and close situations" is defined as at-bats in the seventh inning and beyond when the player's team is ahead by one run or is tied, or the potential tying run is at least on deck. In those situations, Ortiz hit .346 with 11 homers and 33 R.B.I.; Rodriguez was at .293 with 4 homers and 12 R.B.I. Ortiz also batted .352 with runners in scoring position, 62 points higher than Rodriguez.

"I think it's discrimination right there against the D.H.," said Ortiz, in discussing his chances for the M.V.P. this year. "It's a position, bro. Who are the guys making the money? The hitters."

Still, when Rodriguez was asked to define M.V.P., he mentioned "doing it from both sides of the field" and "being on the field every day" before saying he would rather play baseball than have to decide on its M.V.P.

The two New York voters, Ken Davidoff of Newsday and John Delcos of The Journal News, picked Rodriguez first; the two Boston voters, Steve Krasner of The Providence Journal and Bill Ballou of The Worcester Telegram & Gazette, gave Ortiz their first-place votes.

"I felt if a D.H. was going to win, he'd have to blow away the stats that the position player had," Delcos said. "I don't think Ortiz did that."

Ballou said he thought Ortiz did.

"What Ortiz did in terms of timeliness and production was over and above anything I'd ever seen a D.H. do," he said.

Davidoff said he waited until the final weekend of the regular season to make his decision and gave Rodriguez the edge once the Yankees clinched the division over Boston.

"If the Red Sox would have won, I would have voted for Ortiz," he said.

Guerrero, finishing behind Rodriguez and Ortiz, received his first-place vote from Gene Guidi of The Detroit Free Press. Manny Ramirez of the Red Sox was fourth (156), Travis Hafner of the Cleveland Indians was fifth (151), Paul Konerko of the Chicago White Sox was sixth (128) and Mark Teixeira of the Texas Rangers was seventh (106). Three Yankees - Gary Sheffield, Mariano Rivera and Derek Jeter - completed the top 10.

Rodriguez becomes the fourth player to win the award at two positions and the fourth to win it with two teams; he won it as a shortstop for the Texas Rangers in 2003. He received a $1 million contractual bonus. Because Rodriguez is expected to excel, he will probably field more questions next spring about going 2 for 15 in the postseason than he will about winning the M.V.P.

"My approach never changes," Rodriguez said. "It's to go out and be the best player I can and help my team win and get back to being world champions. Maybe when I retire, all the critics and all that kind of stuff will end."

arod is definitely the best in AL baseball, which is really what the MVP award has become, for better or worse.

but, personally, i agree he wasn't the MVP.

when he won two years ago, i think that was the worst possible time. getting the trophy this year is a little more justified, as he certainly did benefit the yankees a great deal -- and i'd still argue to significantly higher degree than ortiz did for the sox.

but, honestly, most valuable is still something i feel jeter warranted.

Matsui, Yankees reach four-year, $52M deal

NEW YORK -- Hideki Matsui and the Yankees agreed Tuesday night to a $52 million, four-year contract that will keep the popular outfielder in New York.

Matsui's agent, Arn Tellem, and Yankees general manager Brian Cashman met the Nov. 15 deadline contained in Matsui's first contract with the team. That deal stated that if there was no agreement by then, New York would have to place the outfielder on unconditional release waivers, which means the Yankees could not have re-signed him until May 15.

Matsui is to earn $13 million in each of the next four seasons, a baseball official familiar with the talks said on condition of anonymity because the team did not disclose the financial terms. Matsui was coming off a $21 million, three-year contract in which he earned an additional $1.5 million in performance bonuses.

New York scheduled a Wednesday news conference at Yankee Stadium to discuss the deal.

A three-time MVP in Japan's Central League with the Yomiuri Giants, Matsui has been one of the Yankees more productive hitters. He batted .305 with 23 homers and 116 RBI last season.

After agreeing to a new contract to stay on as general manager, Cashman said that re-signing Matsui was his first priority.

In other Yankees news, New York exercised its $1.5 million option on reliever Tanyon Sturtze rather than paying a $150,000 buyout. The 35-year-old right-hander was 5-3 with a 4.73 ERA and one save in one start and 63 relief appearances.

Kudos to the Yankees for keeping Tanyon Sturtze off the open market! He was certainly more important to the team than, say, Tino Martinez, who carried the team for a month when they were in the AL basement and whose 2006 option wasn't picked up by this "classy" organization. Good job, Yankees!

Yanks May Go on Instinct With Jeter in Center

IF Derek Jeter moved from shortstop to center field next season, he would win a Gold Glove within a year, Bobby Murcer said yesterday.
A shortstop-turned-center-fielder himself, Murcer wasn't proposing that the Yankees move Jeter to fill their center-field gap, but he was responding to my question about the possibility of the Yankees' moving Jeter or Alex Rodriguez out there.

Derek Jeter would not be the first to play center field after 10 years as a shortstop. Murcer was the first person I thought of yesterday after reading a Reuters article. It was an interview with Yankees Manager Joe Torre in which he said the team had thought about moving Jeter or Rodriguez to center. "We just haven't made a commitment to that," Torre was quoted as saying. "We haven't broached it with the shortstops."
Later in the day, the Yankees denied that Torre had made those comments. "He couldn't have debunked the story any more strongly," said Rick Cerrone, the Yankees' senior director of media relations.
Maybe Torre wanted to debunk the idea that he would consider converting one of the two stars, but I have no reason to question the accuracy of the reporting of Larry Fine, who interviewed Torre and wrote the article. Fine said that he rechecked his notes and that the quotations he had used were there.
That dispute aside, though, let's talk about the idea. It's an excellent one. The Yankees need a center fielder to replace Bernie Williams, whom they should have replaced a year ago. It would have been difficult to remove Williams completely given all that he had meant to the Yankees, but general managers and managers, especially the Yankees' general manager and manager, are paid a lot of money to take difficult and unpopular steps when they become necessary.
Replacing Williams now, the Yankees say they are prepared to use Bubba Crosby. That's the type of move the Florida Marlins might make if they traded Juan Pierre in the continuation of what they say is a market correction and others call a fire sale. Maybe the Yankees could win with Crosby in center, but consider this trifecta:

¶Switch Jeter to center.

¶Move Rodriguez back to shortstop.

¶Sign the free agent Bill Mueller, late of Boston, to play third base.

Choosing Jeter over Rodriguez to play center is easy. The Yankees asked Rodriguez to give up shortstop for third base when they traded for him two years ago, and he worked diligently to master the position. His outstanding defense last season contributed to his Most Valuable Player award. It would be unfair now to tell him to forget third, learn center.
If Jeter, on the other hand, were asked to learn center after 10 years as a major league shortstop, he wouldn't be the first. The Hall of Famer Robin Yount moved to the outfield after 11 major league seasons as a shortstop and won a second M.V.P. award as a center fielder in 1989.
Mickey Mantle began his professional baseball career as a shortstop but played in only seven major league games there. He was, of course, a center fielder. Murcer moved to center, too, after playing shortstop in all 29 of his games for the Yankees in 1965 and 1966. When he returned from two years in the Army in 1969, he found himself at third base.
Murcer experienced one of the most memorable moments of his career during a game the Yankees played at Seattle's tiny Sick Stadium in 1969.
"You could hear fans whisper; that's how close you were to them," recalled Murcer, who was playing third base in that particular game and had already thrown away a couple of grounders. "A guy hit me a two-hopper at third and someone yelled: 'Look out! He's got it again!' "
Not long afterward, Manager Ralph Houk told Murcer to take fly balls in the outfield before a game. "I want to get you out there so far they won't be able to hit the ball to you," Houk told him.
"He was kidding," Murcer said. "I think he was kidding."
But the next night Murcer took six or seven flies during batting practice, started the game in right field, then started regularly in center thereafter.
In discussing a Jeter move to center, Murcer stressed that he was speaking hypothetically, that he didn't know the Yankees' plans and wasn't proposing the move.
But he said in a telephone interview: "I think D. J. would win a Gold Glove out there. If you had to pick between the two, Jeter would be better because of his quickness. He's a little faster than A-Rod, especially in the takeoff. In center field, you need a quick half-step and you have to be in full stride with your first stride. That's what Jeter has."
To illustrate Murcer's point, you need to think of only two Jeter plays: his full-out, headfirst dive into the third-base stands to catch a foul pop and his remarkable dash across the infield in the playoff game with Oakland where he snared a throw from the outfield that was going awry and threw out Jeremy Giambi at the plate with a backhand flip.
"As long as I've been in baseball, going on 42 years," Murcer said, "D. J. has as good a baseball instinct as anyone I've ever seen. If he moved to center field, it would be an absolute breeze for him."

If not Mueller - and why not Mueller? - then maybe they could sign Garciaparra to play 3B for cheap change...

You were so busy breaking down my post into itty-bitty chunks that I think you missed my point. I DON'T think that the Yankees, or any team for that matter, should sign Damon to a seven year deal. Three years? Four years? Sure. But not seven. But it makes sense to move Jeter to CF, replace him with another Gold Glove winner in Slappy, and then sign a low-cost option at 3B. Mueller is solid defensively and can get on base. Garciaparra has something to prove, played 3B at the end of last season, and provides a name that we both know makes Georgie drool. Putting a Gold Glove winner in CF, replacing him with a Gold Glove winner, and signing a low-cost, Gold Glove-caliber option makes a helluva lot more sense than overpaying a free agent or selling off the last of the team's prospects. But that's just my opinion.
