Here it is again.
You folks know what to do: rant, rave, complain and critize your favorite teams and players in this here place. Speculate who you think'll win this year's MVP and other awards. Bowl Predictions. PLUS... set your picks for each week's games here. But you haveta post a reply to say if you're playing along so I can keep track of your record.
REMINDER: One cannot sign up to play after Week Three. Whoever has the best record at the end of the regular season gets the choice to bed either John Madden or Chris "Boomer" Berman.
Anywho, recent news...
· The Atlanta Falcons released Peerless Price after two crappy seasons. He may be employed next by the Eagles, who're severely lacking wide-outs.
· Two days ago, Peter Warrick was cut by the Bengals, but has been picked up by the Seattle Seahawks.
· Colts LB Kendyll Pope suspended for the entire season for violating the League's substance abuse policy three times. Substance used wasn't disclosed.
· After being canned by the Cowboys for injuring his quadraceps, K Billy Cundiff may be returning after a failed trade with the Jax Jaguars for their K in exchange for an undisclosed 2006 draft pick.
· Since the Eagles released DT Corey Simon, he's been getting interest from Seattle, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Indianapolis. It appears the Colts sealed the deal Wednesday night with a five-year deal.
· The Dolphins have been looking at possibly signing Tim Couch.
· Dorsey Levens may return to the Eagles after they lost Correll Buckhalter for the season. AGAIN.
· Billy Volek, the consistent back up QB for the Titans is demanding a trade; so is T Grady Jackson of the Packers.
The Lions' offensive and defensive lines are 100% grade A monkey crap. The coaching staff has no clue how to use three outstanding recievers (make that two, as Charles Rogers probably won't make it out of the first game uninjured for the 3rd consecutive season). The only player worth anything is the kicker, and that's because the Lions can't get a touchdown when they start with a 1st down in the red zone.
That's all I got right now. I'm sure I'll have more soon.
OK, I watched the draft and I watched the off season deals, trades, and free agent pick ups. And now I’m watching all the pre season games via the NFL network ( greatest channel ever). I developed a mental list of players that need to be watched, and teams that need to be watched and paid attention to this year. I’m no expert, but hell none of us are. I’m putting that mental list to cyber- paper right now…
AFC East:
1) Patriots: Super Bowl champs a dynasty why not pick them?
Veteran to watch: Deion Branch, can the super bowl mvp translate heroics into David Patten numbers during the regular season?
Free Agent to watch: Tie Chad Brown LB/Tim Dwight WR/ST..both are older, but both can fill holes in the team’s depth and Brown can fill in for beloved Teddy Bruschi, and stay healthy? Dwight can surely help in returns and has great hands and speed at a number 3 wr or special situation receiver.
Rookie to watch: Logan Mankins OG/ Nick Kaczur OG…name the New England offensive line????? They just do their jobs no one famous there except maybe Matt Light. It will be interesting to see if either of these rookies get in there by week 5 or 6 and shore up the line or even start. This will be important for Dillon and for Brady taking less hits.

2) Buffalo Bills: The surprise team of the east. If they can beat NE once or twice they could win the division…theoretically. I won’t be sending bets to vegas though.
Veteran to watch: Obviously JP Losman, he looks really good in pre-season, but pre-season is pre-season.
Free Agent to watch: Mike Gandy OT/ Bennie Anderson OT….Buffalo needs an offensive line..they really need it, even with Losman’s ability to run a bit.
Rookie to watch: Raymond Preston C/ Justin Geisinger…Offensive line woes mean these rookies need to be able to shore up the line or hopefully be situational starters soon..real soon.

3) New York Jets: They could easily be number 2 and threaten number 1, but they normally find a way to lose early and get hot late (the exception being last year). If that changes and things stay similar to last year then things could look up for one of the most underrated head coaches in football. I have no problem thinking they could easily be no 2 in the division.
Veteran to watch: Let’s see if Chad Pennington QB can stay healthy an entire year. Then the jets can threaten for number 2 and a wildcard slot.
Free Agent to watch: Laveranues Coles WR is really important for this team. I think he has a hell of a work ethic and will undoubtedly be the no 1 receiver.
Rookie to watch: Mike “frickin’” Nugent PK. All those field goals are going to add up and win some games. People forget how important a kicker is to winning sometimes, especially when you have a great defense, and a mid range offense.

4) Miami Dolphins: Surely a rebuilding year, and the first for Nick Saban. It will take a year for the systems to adapt and change, and who really knows if Saban can transition to the NFL. They will surely land in the no 4 slot in the division. And will Ricky help out or be a cancer in the locker room?
Veteran to watch: The entire defense. Yeah they have Zach Thomas and Jason Taylor and Sam Madison, but can the interior linemen hold their own? Will injuries continue to plague the secondary? How will Vonnie Holliday, Kevin Carter, and Junior Seau help, or are they all done? The defense will make or break a decent a season for Miami.
Free Agent to watch: I suppose it comes down to Holliday DE/DT, and his ability to be flexible at positions and staying healthy. Also Keith Traylor NT. The interior of the line needs help and it will be interesting to see how these 2 play out. Kevin Carter DE also needs to be solid and healthy. Man, this defense could be great or it could be afree agent bust/disaster.
Rookie to watch: Ronnie Brown RB, if he can be solid which I think he can then certainly the dolphins can trade Ricky, and let their crappy quarterbacks depend on the run and not be pressured to pass. Brown is the key to the offense, because I’m betting the QB position will be re-worked next year anyway.

Based on what I saw Monday vs. the Rams, you're right. They looked awful. I've always liked Joey Harrington (grade A cutie, with those big dark eyes), but he looked woeful, Mooch looked like he had no clue. I mean, they made the Rams look like worldbeaters.
Now, if we do the weekly picks this year, anybody other than me gonna play? Cause it got very lonley last year.
For my own team, I'm thinking the Bengals will break through and post their first winning record since 1990 and go 9-7. They have a very winnable game Week 1 in Cleveland and return to Cincinnati for the Vikings. Their toughest out-of-division games this year...Colts, Vikes, Packers, Bills...are all in Cincinnati. And they get those Colts in late November, when the weather can tend to be awful.
i will, once again, and sadly, die-hardedly support the jets. if the jets/giants pre-season game i went to was any indicator, they will finish with 0 wins. however, before and after that game, i honestly feel they're a contender and could upset the patriots by knocking them from the AFC east's lead
... if only they wouldn't lose to this years champion colts...
...the J-E-T-S JETS! JETS! JETS! looked pretty good against the Eagles tho'. And as a Colts fan, the Simon signing is huge!
I'll try and play this year. It just depends on what night TK puts the list up for the week.

· 2-time Pro Bowler and Lions backup QB Jeff Garcia broke his frigging leg. Now the Lions have no experienced QB on the roster with exception to Harrington.
· Tedy Bruschi wants to play next year. He's on the Pat's PUP list and continues to train with close observation.
· Recently waived DE Travis Hall formerly of the ATL, signed with the Niners.
· Ravens placed second-round pick LB Dan Cody on the IR. Cause is "damage" to his ACL and MCL.
· WR Freddie Mitchell was cut by the Chiefs. Also, RB Charlie Garner was cut by the Bucs.

personally I like hockey better.
I gotta ask what is making you guys take the Browns over the Bengals.
Romeo Crennel. He'll take 'em all on! Like Rambo.
And I still don't like Carson Palmer.
I don't really have a reason, Jim. This is more like a guessing game for me.

Ickey Woods won't be playing.
Where's Boomer while we're at it?
The Bengals are a few players away from being a good team: Boomer Esiason, James Brooks, David Fulcher and Anthony Munoz.
What about Cris Collinsworth?
Yeah.
I was "borrowing" an old Charles Barkley joke.
Years ago, when the Celtics were really bad, Barkley's team (Suns?) was in Boston playing the Celtics.
A reporter asked him about the Celtics, and Barkley surprised him by saying 'The Celtics aren't too bad...they're only a few players away from being really good.' (or something)
The amazed reporter couldn't believe it, and asked Barkley to explain some more:
"Just a few players away...Larry Bird and Kevin McHale'
I wish he was still playing. Barkley, that is.
But I'll save my complaints about the League and it's current roster of "superstars" for the 2005 NBA Thread.

But you'll go with Dilfer instead?
And what's not to like about Palmer? He was getting better and better as the season wore on. Had he not gotten hurt in the game, I think he'd have led the Bengals to an upset of the Pats in December.
Since no one paid attention to my reviews.(so I'm not going to do anymore just to hear myself talk)..I'm just going to talk about some of the games. The Bengals defense will be surprisingly good this year and their much hailed offense will be sporadic all year. Even if they can remain relatively injury free I don't see them going over 8-8, and they'll probably be 7-9. I think the AFC North will be a letdown this year in terms of power with most of the inter-divisional matches going 1-1. I honestly think a team can win the AFC North with an 8-8 record, although 9-7 might be needed. Theoretically the Bengals could win the division if Roethlesberger is as overrated as I think, Baltimore's offense is as inept as ever, and Romeo has that 1 year headcoach learning curve I think he will.
That said I believe the Bengals will win against Cleveland in week one. The Bengals have to win 3 of their first 5 games or their season is done..Marvin Lewis knows this. The Bengals will win in week one.Braylon Edwards is relatively useless with Dilfer throwing 10 yard pass plays. And Davis being gone doesn't help. I don't see Cleveland winning over 5 or 6 games, which is respectable for Romeo's first year.
I read it, you whiney bastard!
News
· Jerry Rice retired.
· The Steelers and WR Hines Ward agree to a 4 yr. deal.
· Charlie Frye has been chosen to be the Brown's backup QB over Doug Johnson.
· Raiders WR Jerry Porter expects to be ready for the season openener against the Pats. He missed all of preseason.
· The Cowboys signed Peerless Price to a 1 yr. deal. They also acquired LB Scott Fujita from the Chiefs for a 2006 6th round draft pick and a 2007 conditional pick.
· The Eagles cut DE Hugh Douglas, FB Jon Ritchie, and P Sean Landetta.
· The Pats cut WRs David Terrell and P.K. Sam and TE Jed Weaver.
· The Jets acquired OL Steve Morley from the Packers for an undisclosed draft pick. They also claimed off waivers WR Dante Ridgeway from the Bengals and CB Lamont Reid from the Cardinals.

I have the Bengals going 9-7 with a win in Week 1 at Cleveland. I'll take 'em one game at a time. Yes, I've gone through the schedule and made my predictions for the season. I think 9 wins is reasonable.
And gentlemen, I think, sadly, that the New Orleans Saints will not exist anymore. Owner Tom Benson has really wanted to move the Saints out of N.O. z(or to get a new stadium or a renovated Superdome) and now he has his excuse to move. I heard a mention last night by Ted Koppel during the UofMiami-FSU game last night that, "The Superdome is to be brought down." This is in the midst of severe human tragedy Benson's excuse to move.

I'll be pleased if they win more games than the lose, irrespective of the playoffs. The AFC is such a deep conference now. If they go 9-7, I'm fine with that and call the season a success. THEN Marvin has to get them into the playoffs NEXT year.
(sigh) sadly enough im a...niners fan so im just hoping that they dont suck quite as badly as last year. Im hoping for 6 wins (isnt that a shame) but i still love football and im going with the Vikes and the Ravens in the superbowl. I would think the 4 titles with Joe Montana and the 1 with Steve Young can serve as a salve for your Niner wounds...
yes but a 2-14 season with both of your wins being agains Arizona in overtime does show just how far gone the glory days are...
Pats win 30-20!
1 down,15 to go!
· It seems T.O. and McNabb have resolved their issues. At least temporarily.
· The Saints are most likely going to play four of their home games at the Alamodome.
· Niners OL Thomas Herrion apparently died of heart disease.
· Giants RB Tiki Barber signed a 2 yr. extension to his contract.
· RB Brian Westbrook ended long-term contract talks with the Eagles. He currently has a 1 yr., 1.6 million deal.
· Broncos signed WR David Terrell for an undisclosed amount.
· Dolphins TE Randy McMichael was sentenced to three months probation after an "incident" in which he gave his wife a bloody nose.

· The Raiders cut TEs Teyo Johnson and Rickey Dudley.
· The Steelers signed WR Quincy Morgan after being cut days earlier by the Cowboys to sign Peerless Price.
· The Vikings signed WR Koren "Alligator Arms" Robinson to a 2 yr. deal.

yeah even my niners got a W. Who saw that one coming? But hey were in first place on acount of all other teams in the division losing. Yeah i know its only week one but hey ill take em anyway i can get.
This "robegory" really went to hell without me...
I went 8-8 in Week 1. The Falcons holding off the Eagles and the Colts pasting the Ravens kept me out of the losing record column.

Your Jets let me down, Robbie.
I'm thinking of picking the Dolphins this weekend, simply out of spite.
Dolphins will win easily against the shittiest team in the league mamase mamasa mamabousa.
the jets were disgusting. there were no redeeming qualities. they played even worse than the
pre-season game i attended, where at least the defense looked good.
fumbles, penalties, interceptions, letting up 3-play touchdown drives... just awful.
my dad said the jets will go 2-14 this year then trade the overall #1 pick next year for Trent Dilfer.
There's only two areas the Jets need to improve on if they want to win the SuperBowl:
their offense, and their defense.

Larry Johnson has loose hands
Johnson arrested, charged in altercation with girlfriend
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Larry Johnson turned himself in to face an assault charge after an altercation with his girlfriend at a bar, the latest in a series of troubles with the law for the Kansas City running back and other Chiefs players.
Police Department spokesman Darin Snapp said Johnson was cited Monday for domestic abuse assault. He posted bond and was released, with a court date set for Sept. 20.
Snapp said Johnson's girlfriend came into the bar early Saturday and saw him with another woman. The 25-year-old girlfriend, of Overland Park, Kan., then walked away, Snapp said, but Johnson text messaged her on her phone and asked her to meet him downstairs.
He then grabbed the woman by the arm and pulled her to the front door, where Johnson asked the manager to make her leave, Snapp said. The manager said he couldn't do that.
Snapp said Johnson became irate after his girlfriend confronted the other woman. The running back grabbed his girlfriend by the shoulders and shoved her to the floor, the police report said.
The Kansas City Star reported on its Web site Tuesday that the girlfriend denied that she was pushed or dragged to the door. Snapp said the woman told police she didn't want Johnson arrested, but wanted the incident documented.
Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil said the incident will not affect Johnson's standing with the team. Johnson, a backup to starter Priest Holmes, ran nine times for 119 yards against the New York Jets on Sunday.
Johnson was charged in December 2003 with aggravated assault, a felony, and misdemeanor domestic battery for allegedly brandishing a gun during an argument with an ex-girlfriend at his home. He entered a diversion program and was required to complete 120 hours of community service, attend an anger management course and stay out of trouble for two years.
If it's determined he committed a criminal act, Johnson County prosecutor Paul Morrison said his office would file a motion to revoke the running back's diversion.
Johnson is the latest of several Chiefs players in trouble with the law either at bars or because of alcohol.
Earlier this year, cornerback Eric Warfield pleaded guilty to a third offense of driving under the influence, a felony. He was suspended by the NFL for the first four games of this season.
During training camp, backup quarterback Todd Collins was involved in a scuffle at a restaurant and bar near River Falls, Wis.
In earlier incidents, kicker Lawrence Tynes was charged with breaking a bouncer's nose in a River Falls bar fight. Defensive tackle Junior Siavii and safety Greg Wesley also were arrested during camp after allegedly getting into a drunken confrontation with police in a Minneapolis hotel.
Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil said his players know that anything they do -- or are accused of doing -- will be magnified because of who they are.
"I think we do as good as the best job in the National Football League of making sure players are aware of their vulnerability, their profile," Vermeil said. "There's no place to hide in Kansas City. Our fans know our players. To use common sense and to be aware of the problem areas. Stay out of the bad areas. Be aware of certain things."
Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil said the incident will not affect Johnson's standing with the team. Johnson, a backup to starter Priest Holmes, ran nine times for 119 yards against the New York Jets on Sunday.
that really pisses me off and not just cause I have Priest in my fantays league................he needs to be punished. These guys need to learn you can't hits the girls. I'm writing a letter to the NFL. This fucker took 2 TDs away from me this week.

i dont think such a thing exists. there are voting and poll options, but that'd either just give the boards' picks (rather than personal) or require you to type more than normal, anyway.
what i do is wait for someone to post the weekly picks, then respond to that post, so that all the team-typin is already done. then i hilite the predicted winner in each row and click BOLD from the ubb code, which automatically puts the B tags around the name.

SUPER BOWL!
Hear that Bengal growlin' mean and angry
Hear he comes a prowlin' lean and hungry
An offensive brute
Run, pass or boot
And defensively he's rough, tough
Cincinnati Bengals
That's the team we're going to cheer to victory
Touchdown Bengals get some points upon that board
And win a game for Cincinnati
I say you're on to something if the Bengals go in and beat a fiesty Bears team in Chicago next Sunday.
Here's why I think the Bengals can do it: The Bears do not have an offense to keep up with the Bengals. The Bengals are not making offensive mistakes (as the Lions did yesterday; as much as I think Harrington is totally cute, he's playing awfully and this may be the last year you see him in honolulu blue and silver). Kyle Orton's always been a solid QB, but I think it's too much to ask for him to try to keep with Palmer-Johnson-T.J.-Rudi et al. And the Bengals D can be just tenacious enough to keep the Bears out of the endzone and force the Bears into ditching the run. I think this game will remind a lot of people of the early 1988 Bengals, which won by outscoring teams with the pass and forcing the other team out of their game plan. The Bengal D then was just good enough to be able to take advantage of teams having to try to play catch up.

He has been pretty consistent in his two-game career so far, yeah.
I remain unconvinced that the Bears are a good team. Their 38 points against the Lions is pretty misleadng, considering they got two touchdowns on special teams/defensive plays. 336 yards of offense isn't tremendous. They may have ended Joey Harrington's days as a starter in Detroit, but they're still a 5-6 win team at best. The Bengals should beat them convincingly. The real tests for Cincy should come in weeks 5(on the road against Jacksonville) and 7(at home against Pittsburgh).
Barring an injury to Peyton Manning or Tom Brady, Cincy won't be going to the Super Bowl this year. However, with the way the Jets, Chargers and Ravens have looked, the Bengals look like an excellent pick for one of the Wild Card spots. If Pittsburgh's running game falters, they might even steal the division.

They've been twice?????? I hold no high hopes for a bowl appearance, but why not?
Because Oakley said they would collapse, remember? You need to keep up here, pig.
I've had some time to think about the Lions self destruction yesterday, and there are a lot of problems. The most obvious problem is that Joey Harrington is not getting through to this team. Roy Williams didn't stick with the called play in the endzone. Why? Why did he turn away instead of fight for the position so that he could at least swat the ball incomplete? The simple answer is he didn't want to. He didn't want to play for Harrington.
Now, had that aweful nonexistant penalty not been called on Rogers on that 41 yard pass when the score was 7-6 in the 1st, the whole game might have been different. But Harrington couldn't get the team to play for him. The offensive line won't block for him. The defense won't get the ball back for him. And, most importantly, his recievers won't run the plays for him, to be where he is supposed to throw ball.
I heard Woody talk about how Bledsoe was a quiet leader with the Pats. I remember how they wouldn't play for him. I remember how it took him getting injured, and Brady stepping in, to turn that team around. Brady is a champion. He is the best quarterback in the NFL. And he is the top leader in the NFL. Maybe when Woody leaves the Lions, and he's asked what went wrong here, he'll say the truth about Harrington.
But that's only one part of the problem. Marriuchi (I have no idea how to spell his name) doesn't have the fire this team needs from its head coach. He's too laid back. He's had three years, and he's not getting through to them. I'm starting to think the Lions need a new coach, and maybe a new staff entirely. That, and a quarterback the team will play for. A leader. Because the Lions don't have any leaders on this team. Not on offense, not on defense, and not on the sidelines.
You make it sound like the Lions are making a conscious effort not to play for Harrington. I don't think it works like that.
The Lion's offensive line is pretty bad. That much was evident from the preseason games. At the same time, however, Joey Harrington has more than enough weapons to overcome poor blocking. I've tried to give him the benefit of the doubt(he seems like a nice kid and he was a winner in college), but if he can't put up points with the amount of talent he has at the skill positions...well, something's wrong.
P.S-I'd take Manning over Brady. Both great quarterbacks, though.

I'm not even remotely thinking Super Bowl for the Stripes. Walk before you run.
9, 10, 11 wins...yes, that's what I'm thinking is doable. If it gets them into the playoffs in the AFC, great. If not, well, the AFC is damned tough right now.

I don't know about conscious. But there is no second effort by anyone out there. And that says a lot about something. Some people say it's the quarterback, some say it's the coach. I only know what happened in New England. The same team that didn't play for Bledsoe won it all for Brady.

Harrington played an aweful game, there is no question about it. Most of his passes were short. He unloaded the ball too quickly too many times. He unloaded the ball for interceptions when he should have taken the sack. Simply put, he played like crap, and it showed. But when he did get it right, his recievers didn't put in the extra effort to make the plays. That showed too.
The offensive line hasn't jelled, and that is killing Harrington, who is a lousy scrambler, not that he should have scramble on every play. Still, I think the offensive line, like his recievers, is lacking faith in his ability to lead this team. I think it's very evident, and has been for some time. I watched Harrington very closely this last game. I have a regular discussion with a friend who is a Pats fan (he's from Boston). He keeps telling me that the difference between Harrington and Brady is that Brady waits to make the play. Brady will take the hit to make the play. Brady is not afraid to make the play. Harrington, on the other hand, just unloads the ball, often too soon, and it costs him. How many times does he just toss it up in one of those wabbly short three yard passes to Jones or someone else right there, only to watch the guy get taken down just after he himself has been hit. It happens too much. It shouldn't happen at all.
The fact is, Harrington pannicks under pressure. How can a team respect that?
There is another problem with this team. Mooch wants to coach the west coast offense. The problem is, this team isn't built for it. This team is built to send the ball down field on long passes. It's not built to run. Maybe if the offensive line knew that it only had to make a wall and not a hole, maybe then they would keep the pressure off and allow Harrington to hit his recievers thirty yards down the field. The system being coached doesn't fit the players on the team. That also shows.
My opinion? For the next game bench Harrington and see if the rookie can play Mooch's system any better. If not, fire Mooch, and bring in someone who can inspire this team and coach to play the style of football it was drafted to play. Enough is enough already.

Did you see that playoff game last year between New England and Indianapolis? That wasn't a game, that was a massacre. It was clear that the Colts' defense wasn't good enough. But how do you explain Manning's performance? He's the best regular season quarterback of all time, but he has yet to show that something special that makes Brady a champion.

Whoah, who said New England didn't play for Bledsoe? Bledsoe didn't lose his job because his team quit on him. He lost it because he got hurt and Brady took over.
Drew Bledsoe went to three Pro-Bowls as a Patriot, took the team team to a Super Bowl in '96, and still owns most of the franchise passing record. Also, most people forget that it was Bledsoe that came in during the fourth quarter of the AFC Championship game against Pittsburgh(after Brady got hurt) in 2001 and engineered the game-winning drive. Without Bledsoe, Brady doesn't get that first ring. So, I'm definitely not seeing why or how his team would quit on him.

The Lions have an excellent running back(Jones), one of the top pass-catching tight ends in football(Pollard), and tall, matchup receivers(Williams, Rogers, Williams). From a skill position standpoint, they absolutely have the parts to run a west-coast offense.
They can throw the ball downfield, too. It's not like Bill Walsh's 49er teams never threw deep passes.

I don't think it's going to be any better with Dan Orlovsky in there, especially since Orlovsky is more of a classic tall, immobile dropback QB. It may just be "wait for Jeff Garcia to get healthy" time in Detroit.
And if that fails, it'll be "pray for Matt Leinart" time.
Quote:
But how do you explain Manning's performance?
Poor weather conditions, a great opposing defense and an even better opposing coach.
It wasn't Brady's best game, either. He had the same number of passing yards as Corey Dillon had rushing yards(144).
Quote:
He's the best regular season quarterback of all time
He's a pretty good postseason QB, too. In the three games he's played against teams other than New England the last two years, he's completed 71 of 89 passes(that's an 80% completion rate) for 1138 yards and 12 TD's(or 379 yards and 4 TD's per game), with only 1 interception.
Quote:
but he has yet to show that something special that makes Brady a champion.
You'd have a hard time convincing me that if it had been Manning wearing a Patriots uniform these last four years he wouldn't have three rings.

Chris Oakley said:

Of course, if the Bengals were coached by a white guy you'd be all over that bandwagon.
I'm just facing the reality that the Lions are done for the season. There is so much that has to happen for this team to get anywhere. I doubt Garcia is the answer, but if the Lions are at or below .500 when he can return to the field, I say start him and see what happens. Still, Garcia is a short term solution. That doesn't mean I still won't pick the Lions to win games, they beat Green Bay in the opening game, and had they put in at least that much effort, the loss to the Bears would have been respectable.
Quote:
Animalman said:

Ditto.
And Ani's right when he says that Bledsoe was instrumental in the Pats getting that first ring. I would hope Drew wears it proudly because he was key in taking over for a hurt Brady in Pittsburgh.
Also, Brady and Bledsoe remain friends. I never saw any evidence that the team quit on Drew. The Cowboys last night looked like they played well for him. In Buffalo, I don't know. Mularky may be like a lot of offensive minded coaches...he wants to go with his guy and he inherited Bledsoe.
If the Lions, well more directly Harrington, continue their poor play, yeah, I definitely see them in the Matt Leinart sweepstakes.
The hilarious thing is that Detroit could still conceivably make the playoffs simply because of how awful the NFC North is. Chicago's not going to run away with. If Minnesota and Green Bay continue to underachieve, who knows how few wins it'll take to claim the division title.
Yeah, it's an ugly division this year.
This is going to sound hilarious, but I honestly think, based on their respective defenses, that the Lions and Bears *are* the best teams in the North. The Packers look old and clueless. The Vikings have no identity and have not experienced "addition by subtraction" with Moss's departure.
But I still say the Bears do not have enough to keep up with the Bengals this weekend.
What's the record for most interceptions in consecutive games? The Bengals have to be close.
I believe they tied with the '71 Browns today omn that....btw....

If that doesn't motivate them to get it together as a team, then they need to do something drastic.

Brooks Bollinger.
Damn, Robbie. Damn.
Herm needs to make those guys work in training camp..they were all obviously out of shape.....everyone...Abraham and coles are the only 2 guys that have looked decent...
my suspicion is that chad got hurt in pre season, thus resulting in the pre and early season sucking that he was doing. this weekend's game was just the final straw. er tendon. or whatever.
taking a 1-2 season and starting at least the next few games with yer third string quarterback doesn't exactly sound promising.
My suspicion is if Chad doesn't get his arm healthy enough for at least 12 games next season, he's very nearly done as a Jet. And so will Herm (great guy, but suspect as a coach) if this club is no less than two games over .500.
I might as well make some end-of-the-season predictions:
MVP: Ladanian Thomlinson
Offensive PotY: Hines Ward OR Chad Johnson
Defensive PotY: Donnie Edwards OR Ed Reed
Off. Rookie of the Year: Carnell Williams
Def. Rookie of the Year: Travis Johnson
Is there anything to this?

Belichick turns down help from Steelers trainer
PITTSBURGH (Sept. 26, 2005) -- New England coach Bill Belichick ordered Pittsburgh Steelers trainer John Norwig off the field when Norwig asked if medical help was needed for injured Patriots tackle Matt Light during their Week 3 game.
As Light lay on the Heinz Field turf with an apparently serious right leg injury during the second quarter of New England's 23-20 victory, Norwig came onto the field to offer help.
That prompted Belichick, who cautiously guards all injury information, to emphatically order the trainer off the field. Light later left the stadium with a cast on his leg.
NFL trainers normally treat only their own players but will offer their assistance during a serious injury, especially when it involves a visiting team player. Most teams have larger medical staffs for home games than for road games.
Belichick also may have been upset because Steelers coach Bill Cowher went onto the field to offer condolences to Patriots safety Rodney Harrison after he badly injured a knee earlier in the game. Harrison is expected to miss the rest of the season with a torn left knee ligament.
I understand about Bill protecting his players (and any possible injuries they have) from the opposing team, but why would he be miffed about Cowher?
Now this is a message board!

Blast from past: Jets turn to Testaverde at QB
By Len Pasquarelli - ESPN.com
Just one day after apprising Vinny Testaverde in a telephone call that they would likely go in a different direction as they scramble to address a quarterback situation suddenly in crisis mode, the New York Jets on Tuesday reversed field and signed the veteran passer, who will begin practicing with the team this week.
The addition of Testaverde, 41, comes as the Jets seem resigned to losing starter Chad Pennington for the balance of the season. Team officials will await the results of a second examination of Pennington's damaged right shoulder, expected to be performed Tuesday by Dr. James Andrews, but are close to announcing the former first-rounder will not play again in 2005.
Team officials are expected to announce sometime Tuesday that backup Jay Fiedler, who has a partially dislocated right shoulder and is also scheduled to be checked by Andrews, will be sidelined indefinitely. Despite reports that Fiedler will miss the rest of the year, there is some feeling he could return in about two months, since his injury isn't expected to require surgery.
Third-year veteran Brooks Bollinger, a sixth-round pick from Wisconsin in the 2003 draft, will start Sunday's game against the Baltimore Ravens. It will mark the first start for Bollinger, who has appeared in just one regular-season contest.
Testaverde, who started 15 games for the Dallas Cowboys in 2004, will begin his second stint with the Jets. The Long Island native played with the team from 1998-2003, starting in 57 games in that stretch. For his career, the 18-year veteran has appeared in 217 games and started in 204 of them. He has completed 3,631 of 6,420 passes for 44,475 yards, with 268 touchdown passes and 255 interceptions.
With the Cowboys in 2004, Testaverde threw for 3,532 yards, with 17 touchdown passes and 20 interceptions.
On Monday, cognizant of the injuries to Pennington and Fiedler, both of which occurred in Sunday's overtime loss to Jacksonville, Testaverde phoned head coach Herm Edwards to offer his services. Although not completely rebuffed, Testaverde was told that the club was considering other alternatives, and would likely sign a quarterback who had been in an NFL training camp this summer.
By Tuesday, though, Jets officials had decided Testaverde offered the best opportunity for winning this season. Details of the contract he signed were not yet available. He is expected to meet with Jets coaches on Tuesday to begin reviewing the playbook.
While he comes with some drawbacks -- notably a lack of mobility and a propensity for turnovers -- Testaverde might actually be a good fit for the offense installed this summer by new offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger. The design calls for a more vertical passing game than the Jets have featured in recent seasons, with the ball going deeper up the field, and Testaverde still has solid arm strength.
There was some thought this spring, with Pennington coming off extensive surgery to his right shoulder and having experienced injuries that forced him to miss time in both 2003 and 2004, that the Jets might sign Testaverde as an insurance policy. The team opted for the younger Fiedler instead and Testaverde was not in any team's camp this summer.
In addition to his first tenure with the Jets, Testaverde, the first overall pick in the 1987 draft, has played with Tampa Bay (1987-1992), Cleveland (1993-95), Baltimore (1996-1997) and Dallas (2004).
Even as the Jets completed the deal with Testaverde, who can essentially drive to work every day now, the team was still considering other option to bolster the depth chart.
The Jets are scheduled to audition three veteran free agent quarterbacks -- Doug Johnson, Jesse Palmer and Jonathan Quinn -- on Tuesday and a team official said they could bring in three or four more before the end of the week. It is possible, after Andrews examines Pennington and Fiedler on Tuesday, and renders an opinion on their shoulder injuries, that New York might be forced to add another quarterback beyond just Testaverde.
Several league sources told ESPN.com that the Jets have inquired about the availability of former Washington starter Patrick Ramsey, demoted two weeks ago, but were told by the Redskins they will not trade him. League sources also confirmed Tuesday morning that the Jets have had no discussions with Tennessee about the possibility of trading for Titans backup Billy Volek, widely viewed as one of the top No. 2 quarterbacks in the league. Volek played under Heimerdinger in Tennessee and knows the offense well.
With Pennington now likely to have a second rotator cuff surgery in less than a year, his long-term viability as the team's franchise-caliber quarterback is in question. Before the start of the 2004 season, the Jets signed Pennington to a seven-year contract extension worth $64 million and including $23 million in bonuses.
It is not known if a quarterback has ever recovered from two rotator cuff surgeries, let alone two in less than a year. Andrews, who performed the original surgery, is hoping that the latest setback is just a case of Pennington tearing adhesions and scar tissue in the shoulder, but that might be overly optimistic. There are some in the Jets organization who fear Pennington's career could be ended by the latest injury or that, at the very least, he will never be the same as the quarterback who led the league in passing in 2002.
Jets team physician Dr. Elliott Pellman has apprised Pennington that he suffered a torn right rotator cuff, ESPN and ESPN.com confirmed on Monday night. While they would like to hold out hope, Jets officials seem to concur with that diagnosis.
Len Pasquarelli is a senior NFL writer for ESPN.com. To check out Len's chat archive, click here.
Brooks Bollinger, Wisconsin baby.
This will be the third year in a row Pennington has missed at least three games due to injury, and all for similar injuries. That magical 2002 season may end up being the high point for his career(and "Hurm" Edwards').
Assuming Curtis Martin still has some gas left, and the defense stays fresh, the Jets are still good enough to get 7 or 8 wins. They're a well-coached team that stops the run and doesn't turn the ball over very much. Most of their tough games will come in the second half of the season.

I'm willing to bet that Herm's high point remains the 1978 "Miracle at the Meadowlands" when he returned the Pisarcik-Csonka fumble for an Eagles TD as the Giants were trying to run out the clock.
I didn't know that was him. Was he also on the 1980 Super Bowl team?

Nailbiter for the Bengals, but they hung on. Still too many penalties and I'm still scared of their run D. But no way I will look down upon 4-0.

But I don't see picking these games in this forum to be rooting for or against a team (unless one explicitly says that's what he's doing).

In my time, I've heard that song blaring over the very-bad speaking system at long-gone Riverfront...
If anyone is interested, since 1974, at games I've attended, the Bengals are 11-7.
I'm 9-4 on this weekend, going into tonight's game.
Also, as of right this second, Carson Palmer is clearly the NFL's Most Valuable Player. His closest competition is LaDanian Tomlinson, but I give the nod to Carson since the Chargers are only 3-3 and the Bengals are 5-1.
We get a national game Sunday when Pittsburgh comes to town. You know right this second they're doing everything short of laying on of hands to make sure Ben plays vs. the Bengals. Very gratifying to see the Jags intercept Maddox and return it for the OT win.
The Lions just find ways to lose. Here's my biggest problem with Harrington. This is not the first time this season that the game has been in his hands. This is also not the first time this season that the game has been lost in his hands. I've seen too much to not be sure about him. I don't think Garcia can do any better with this team, but I know that Harrington is a bust. If there is one thing the Lions are really good at, it's drafting below average quarterbacks. Add Harrington to the long list of never should have beens.

Garcia is a stud and knows Mariucci's offense like no one else........just wait and see.
yeah being a niner fan i know how dangerous garcia can be when hes on so dont count the lions out till we see what he can do
The thing is, it wasn't just Harrington breaking down. Last night on the Detroit Sport's Report they showed four different plays that broke down four different ways. First, Harrington dropped back from the snap, but the line let the blitz through. Second, Harrington was protected, but he threw a crappy pass. Third, Harrington was protected, but his recievers didn't get themselves open. Fourth, Harrington off the perfect pass, and it was dropped. What they didn't show was fifth, the runningback runs into the offensive line because it can't make a whole for him. That's five different break downs, and one or more of them happens on almost every play. There is not doubt the offense won't play for Harrington, but do they have what it takes to play for Garcia? He's on the radio every Monday at 4 talking about the Lions, and I like what he has to say. He's clearly a strong leader, and he knows his stuff. He sucked in the preseason, but that's the preseason. I'm not holding out hope that he can turn this team around, but it's been done before in other cities, so I don't see why it can't be done here. I just know that the team has tuned Harrington out, and that was before the recievers got hurt. He's finished in Detroit, and maybe in the NFL. Although, if Rodney Pete could find some life in Carolina, maybe there is hope for Harrington somewhere else out there.
I'm sorry to see that the Lions have taken over from the Bengals as the laughingstock NFL franchise. I mean, somebody had to do it, but sorry it was the Lions. I'd rather see it be the 49ers.

I would think most people that know anything about football would say the Vikings are by far and away the biggest laughing stock and/or disgrace in the NFL right now.
The Lions have, recently, years of bad play to their credit.
The Vikings have had some offfield issues over the last decade, but at least onfield, they've been competitive or better.
"Most people that know anything about football?" Like I'm some noodge about football? Now, PJP, I'm angry.
The Lions have been this way for 40 years. How long were the Bengals like this? Not 40 years. Therefore, the Lions haven't taken over for anyone. There are still, and seemingly will forever be, the Lions.
yeah, it's like the saints or the browns...
What about the Cards? Have we forgotten how much they suck? And they should be better too, at least offensively. They have the receivers, the back potential, capable quarterbacks. But that O Line... le barf.

While the Lions have not won a title during the Super Bowl era, they do have championships from the 50s.
They also made playoff appearances in the 80s and 90s.
People seem to dish on Wayne Fontes, but his teams made the playoffs quite a bit of the time.
Millen and Mariucci have lost this team. Harrington seems utterly lost (there was a recent SI.com article, I believe, stating that Harrington doesn't call the protections and that really all he's expected to do is throw the ball or hand it off...this is a far cry from just about every other NFL QB).
I feel for you, it's an unfortuante situation. I like Harrington. Liked him in college. Thought he would make a good pro. But clearly, they need Garcia in there, someone in whom they can have confidence.

Considering that Little got drunk and hit and killed another driver back in '99, I'm not wholly sympathetic for him at this time. Maybe there is such a thing as karma...
well sorry to say but your bengals just aren't ready. they gave up 221 yards on the ground at home. They are still a good team but it only gets tougher from here. They have to play at the steelers, KC, and Baltimore. Oh yes and the undefeated colts are coming to town
It's only one game, and only a fool gets excited over one game, but man oh man, the Lions offense looked a little different yesterday. And by a little, I mean a lot. It's far from perfect, and Garcia was left with one reciever by the end of the game. However, a few solid practices with Mike Williams, and Garcia will have his go-to guy. The scary thing is Mike Williams, the rookie, is the only one of the three number ones who looks like a number one. Roy Williams has an attitude problem. Charles Rogers is an ass, although I will give him the benefit of the doubt. It could be that this turns him around big time, especially since he'll be coming back to the field with Garcia as his quarterback. Still, I think the rookie will be Garcia's guy. The big thing is that the offensive line played for him. They trust him to make plays. It's going to take a few weeks, but if the defense can keep them in games like it did yesterday, the offense just migh come around. I'm not saying this team will do anything more than make the playoffs, but there is still time for key players to get healthy, especially on the offense, so there is still time for Mariuchi's West Coast offense to come together for Garcia.
Whaver happens, one thing is clear: PJP is right about Garcia. He knows the offense, and he's just a really smart quaterback. I just hope he's got another year in him, cause the Lions are going to have to groom a new quarterback. Maybe Orlovsky will be that quarterback, but they need Garcia to stick around for bit right now, cause it's going to take him time to learn the system. It will definately help him to see it played the right way. Maybe if Harrington would have had a veteran to learn from he'd be the right guy for this team. Maybe. Lot's of maybes.

Thank you, yes, I know the schedule. They have to crawl before they can walk and they know it.
One game at a time and they're still in first in the division at 5-2. After 14 years of basically terrible, 5-2 looks pretty damned good.
Yeah....sniff..Go Bengals...
well despite the sad state of my squad they have two home games coming up that i get to attend vs Tampa and NY ( i hope we pull out the upset vs NY cause my dad is a huge Giants fan)
I just wanna go back to the wideout conversation for a bit...
Is there a trio on any other team that you can see being a cohesive unit like Harrison, Stokely and Wayne? Obviously Rogers, Williams and Williams have talent, but no group concept (yet). Johnson, Boldin and Fitzgerald in Arizona seem to be their opposites in a manner of writing; group concept is adhering, but a lack of realizing their talent (with exception to Boldin). Who else is there?
Not a 'Boys fan, but Glenn, Price and Keshon could be special...

The Bengals feel they have a special unit in C. Johnson, T.J. Housh...(don't make me spell his last name), and Chris Henry.

Yes, I'm sticking with my Lions. But, this time, it's not because I'm hoping for a win. I really don't know if Garcia can turn this team around. He's not the same guy he was at the beginning of the decade. He's older, and he's probably only one big hit away from sitting for the season. However, the young players on this team bought into him last week, and they were amazed at what he could do when the play looked like it was dead. In situations where Harrington would give up, Garcia got first downs. That takes a lot of pressure off the offensive line with them knowing Garcia can move back there, so they don't have to second guess themselves on every play. They know they don't have to be perfect, and that could lead to them getting close to perfect in a few more games, as the offense starts to jell. He's short on recievers this week, but with Mike Williams as the only guy he can really work with leading up to the game, that kid has a real shot and doing some big things. And with Rogers coming back next week, he'll have at least two of his three wr's. If Rogers really is serious about turning things around, then Garcia is the best thing to happen to him, because his leadership will make that a lot easier. That doesn't help so much this week, and I don't know that Roy Williams will improve under Garcia. He could just be a big mouth. But if he gets healthy soon, the Lions may actually look like a football team.

We got bonus coverage of the end of that game after the Bengals beat the Packers.
Damn. That was ugly. Garcia always plays on as much guts as talent, but damn, to lose like that. He was trying to do too much.
The Bengals come to Detroit in December. I think we're gonna beat you guys.

Garcia spent the entire game trying to make the stupid kind of plays that Brett Favre used to be able to get away with doing. Problem was, instead of looking like Favre of eight or nine years ago, he looked more like...well...Favre did in Cincy...
I just tallied up my record.
I'm 53-37 going into November.
Anybody else keeping track?
I thought TK was keeping track. I have no idea how I'm doing, but I am curious to know.
I know after last week im really sucking but hopefully ill do a little better this week.
hey quick question. Coult we do the records based on win%? Cause ive seen that theres some folks(such as myself) that haven't been able to pick consistantly week in and week out. In fact i think Jim is the only one keeping the pace. Anyways i just did my own tally and found that im floating at .500 with a 21-21 record
% is fine with me. I also have missed a couple of weeks.
I'm coming in at 58.9%.
News and RumoursQuote:
A source with the USC Trojans confirmed that Green Bay has been scouting quarterback Matt Leinart – somewhat of a surprise considering it chose Cal's Aaron Rodgers in the first round of the 2005 draft. Should the 1-6 Packers end up with the No. 1 pick in next year's draft, conventional wisdom suggests the team would take a hard look at USC tailback Reggie Bush. But they have apparently been showing interest in Leinart, too.
That doesn't necessarily mean the Packers aren't happy with Rodgers, who has appeared to be further from starting than initially hoped. Many teams do their due diligence with top-rated players, even when they are stocked at a position. And with Leinart being considered a "franchise" quarterback, the No. 1 pick is expected to have plenty of value for trade. However, one NFC personnel source said he wouldn't be surprised if the Packers are legitimately interested in Leinart.
"He would have been taken (over Alex Smith)," he said of Leinart. "Who knows exactly what they've seen from Rodgers since he's gotten in there. I don't think anyone would have told you Rodgers had a better grade than Leinart going into the (2005) draft. Maybe they are interested in Leinart. I know this: If I thought one player was far better than another, especially at quarterback, I would take a long, long look at it. But considering they just spent a first-round pick on Rodgers and will have a year invested in him, they would have to think there's a huge disparity."

Giants cornerback Will Allen is likely on his way out of New York. He's slated to become a free agent after the season, and coach Tom Coughlin continues to be disappointed that his cornerbacks haven't been bigger playmakers. Allen has recorded only one interception in his last 29 games, and that's not what the Giants were expecting from their highest paid cornerback (Allen is making $2.275 million this season).
Quote:
Return specialist Eddie Drummond's hopes of netting himself a lucrative, long-term deal from the Detroit Lions this season seem to be fading fast. One of the NFL's most electrifying return men last season, Drummond missed five games in 2004 and has once again been slowed by injuries. In five games this season, Drummond has averaged 3.9 yards per punt return and 20.3 yards per kick return, and he has no touchdowns – numbers far below the league's best returners.
Quote:
With wide receiver Bobby Engram slated to return to the Seattle Seahawks possibly as early as this week – and hopes that Darrell Jackson will come back from his knee injury by the end of November – Seahawks coaches think the early spate of injuries could be good for their team in the long run.
The loss of Engram and Jackson forced quarterback Matt Hasselbeck to develop better rapport with wideout Joe Jurevicius and tight end Jerramy Stevens, who have both stepped up their play in the last three weeks Should Jackson return, the Seahawks would have their most potent set of offensive weapons since Mike Holmgren arrived in Seattle.
Quote:
Talk in league circles persists that Chad Pennington's shoulder issues may end up sidelining him for much of next season, and that the New York Jets will explore every available option at the position this offseason – including drafting another quarterback or trading for a veteran starter.
It would be an interesting position for the Packers to get the #1 and have Leinart waiting for them. Or Reggie Bush. Frankly, they could use both guys. NFL coaches are notoriously egotistical, and I doubt that Mike Sherman's any different. A selection of Leinart can be viewed as them having wasted their #1 in '05 on Rodgers. A selection of Reggie Bush does not bring the same kind of criticism. Thus, I think the Packers are more likely to take Bush than Leinart. I add as further support the very real possibility that Bret Favre does not retire after this year. I cannot imagine the competitor that Bret is wanting his last season in the NFL to be the current one. His Hall of Fame status will not be damaged by an awful 2005, but I still can't see Bret choosing to leave and having 2005 in the history books as his last year. I believe John Madden on Monday night said that he can't imagine Favre letting this season stand as his last.
I say Favre does come back and if they end up with the #1, they take Bush. Or someone other than Leinart.

I took a lot of road teams, but in many of these matchups, the road teams coming in are the better team. I was reluctant to take NO over Chicago and Minnesota over Detroit, but I can't pick all road teams. I read today that Joey starts against Minnesota, and I think Brad Johnson may be enough of spark to let the Vikes win this one.
I also think the Colts have enough to finally get over the Patriot hump on Monday night.

Doh!
Cincy in a romp!
I forgot the Lions never beat Minnesota, but it's too late to change my pic now. Good thing they play again in a few weeks.
So far, this has been my best week ever when it comes to picks...
yeah me too i was 11-2
ps i like New England to continue dominance over the Colts on monday night
I'm 8-5 going into tonight's game. I should have gone with my gut and taken the road teams I wanted to take (the Raiders play better D in the final seconds and the Chiefs only get a shot at a field goal).
I think the Colts have enough weapons on both sides to take advantage of New England's injuries to win. I think the Pats keep it close but the Colts win by at least 7.
Oh, for you Bengal fans...the Colts-Bengals tilt at PBS on Nov. 20 has been moved to the afternoon slot on CBS and will be the game most of the nation gets in that timeslot.
Here're the bottom rungs of the NFL ladder...
1-7
They'll have the Number One pick.
I say about four, maybe five wins. If lightning doesn't strike Favre.
2-6
Trade Pennington, invest in running and defensive backs in the Draft. Probably the Number Two pick.
Get rid of Boller. Stick with Wright or Stewart (even though we all known he's gone by the end of this week. Retards...)
I don't know where to begin...
Ditto.
2-7
Keep Volek and hold on tight. This may be McNair's last year. They need a speed wideout. Henry was a BAD pickup.
How fucked are they?! They're essentially playing for no one. They barely have a crowd these days. The Saints are much better than they've played.
Just as a tally...I was 9-5 for this weekend, leaving me 62-42 overall. That's a 59.6% clip.
The Bengals have the bye this weekend.
Here's some fodder for discussion.
Coach of the Year: Marvin Lewis
NFL MVP: Carson Palmer. The Bengals are not 7-2 without him regardless of their turnover margin.
If Carson does indeed win the MVP, he would be the 3rd Bengal to do so. Ken Anderson, QB, won it in 1981. Boomer Esiason, QB, won it in 1988.
The Lions need to trade Roy Williams. Now. Can they get anything for him, like a first round pick in the next draft?
They can't trade him now. The trade deadline has passed.
Well, what about after the season? Would someone give up a first round draft pick for him. I think the Lions should also dump Charles Rogers for a first round pick. Maybe even Kevin Jones, although at least he's actually gone out there injured and put it on the line. Okay, so trading Jones might look one-sided, but Pinner and Bryson have been solid, and together could team up behind a solid offensive line to establish a solid running game.
My thinking is if they can get enough first round picks for some of their dead weight (to them, maybe not to someone else) now, they can use all of them on offensive linemen. The more offensive linemen they can pick up in the next draft (and I'm talking solid playes), the better their chances of putting together a group that can actually protect their quarterbacks next season, giving them time to actually get the ball to Mike Williams and Scotty Vines. DOWNFIELD!!!!!!
Looking at the last game, Harrington fumbled and was intercepted in the first half. Both plays led to touchdowns for Minnesota. However, excluding those screw ups, Harrington had one of his best games ever. He showed he belonged. Imagine if he would have actually had protection from a competent offensive line. I say keep all three quarterbacks next year, and get them behind a real offensive line.
Of course, they'll probably need a new coach, but that might be the easiest piece to replace.
I have a feeling that before Rogers or Williams is traded, the Lions will want to see how productive the entire offense would be under a new, younger QB. As much as I liked Joey in college, it has been a disaster for him in Detroit.
A couple of points:
--Jim might be right about Palmer.
--No one will take Pennington until they see how his surgically-repaired shoulder (twice!) holds up.
--a first-round pick for weedsmokin' Rogers?! Maybe a fifth or sixth...
Agreed on Pennington. He'll be with the Jets for the time being. In fact, I can't imagine anyone trading for him. If his shoulder's repaired..really repaired, then he'll stay with the Jets. If it's not, then he won't start (or he'll be cut outright). And no one will trade for him in that event because they will know it's because of his shoulder.
My frontrunners for MVP:
--Steve Smith (WR) and Delhomme (QB), Carolina
--James (RB), Indy--leading rusher on the only perfect team
--Palmer (QB), Cincy--having a fantastic year
What's your take, Jim?
I like most of the guys you mentioned.
Palmer, Steve Smith (though I can't imgaine a wideout winning MVP for a season, but he's clearly the best thing going in the decidedly weak NFC), but instead of Edge, I'd probably nominate Peyton Manning from that Colts team. His performance against his old nemesis Patriots on MNF did him a world of good in the MVP race.
Tantalizingly enough, the Nov. 20 game in Cincinnati between the Colts and Bengals may provide sufficient separation between Manning and Palmer. Also, a lot hinges for Palmer on how the Bengals play in Pittsburgh later in the season.
Pennington's projected to miss a good chunk of next season if he goes under the knife again. Something has to be done.

And that's why Detroit won't get anywhere. I think we've all seen enough. They are useless right now because the offensive won't allow the quarterback the time he needs to hit them. That being the case, get some first round picks and build a friggin line. A new coach and another quarteback won't get the job done next season with the line the way it is. And what they need to do to fix it will require a lot more than one first round draft pick spent on a left tackle.
No doubt, Detroit has more than just one or two problems to address.
The way you're feeling now is how Bengal fans felt for, oh, most of the 1990s. I know that's no comfort...
Did the Bengals try to build an explosive offense by drafting a quarterback and three wide recievers in four consecutive years with their first round picks before drafting and building a solid offensive line?
Part of how and what you draft is dependent upon your philosophies and upon the level of talent that's available to you when it's your turn to select a player.
I would love the niners to take up Roy williams for ya...even though we dont have a QB to get him the ball...or a line to give that QB some time...or a running back to eat up clock to keep our good buy tiring defense off the field.
Well, if I was in charge, I would give him to you for one first round draft pick.

What's everybody's tally going in to today's games? We're not ranking ourselves by wins and losses, but by percentages, since we've probably eached missed a week or two here and there.
Just curious where everybody stands.
So am I, but I'm not waiding through all those pages to find out how I'm doing. I would have tallied things up for myself, but no one ever posted the actual results of the pick chart. If someone wants to post every week's chart through now, I'll go back and tally my score.

Chris Oakley, JR?
Right now im 34-27 so thats a 55% for me right now...
Harrington and Williams connected today. It was nice to see Roy act like a man out there and do the job he was drafted for. The thing is, was Detroit actually that good, or was Arizona that bad? I guess we'll know more next week, but I'm guessing the latter is more accurate.
I had a good day yesterday, 10-3.
Though I would have traded those 10 wins for a Browns' upset of the Stillers last night.
35-27 thanks to Dallas come from behind win.
Calculate your percentage, man.
I'm 11-3 for the weekend after Dallas's win last night.
The Eagles are done. Which is fine with me. Nothing against them, but I'm tired of seeing them all the time.

Hm.
Like I was telling my boss yesterday (he's a Dolphins fan, btw)...if the Colts come in to Cincinnati and beat the Bengals and then beat the Steelers the next week in Indy, I see nothing stopping the Colts from the Super Bowl title.
But I do not feel the Colts will win all their games. The weather may be nasty this weekend in Cincinnati, and we know how the Colts fare in icky outdoor weather.

Hey, I'm with ya. I like the Colts. I was born and raised in Indiana. I started my sophormore year of college in '84, the Colts first season in Indy. I was glad to see Indy get a team (though not at another city's expense). If the Bengals can't win it, I'm all for the Colts taking it.
'84. I was TWO.
Damn youse old.
But I still look maaaahwellous.
keep telling yourself that jim
I've had plenty of people tell me so...even some from these boards.
Man, what a rough weekend for me in the NFL. I am 8-7 for the weekend going into tonight's game.
But the Buckeyes beat cursed Michigan! Great game, too.
And the Bengals played offensively tough against the Colts. But there are no moral victories. Lick your wounds, come back tough at home next Sunday against Baltimore (a game for which I should be in attendance).
10-5 for the weekend. Hopefully GB wins tonight.
Oh, and the Lions suck, but I knew that.
I can't decide if I should take the Lions on Thanksgiving v. the Falcons. Thoughts?
Take the Falcons. There's too much crap in the Lions locker room right now, and it's tearing the team appart. Plus, there's a good chance Garcia is starting, and this is a full blown quarterback controversy now. I'm sure guys are taking sides. Rogers is a distraction, although Roy Williams is finally showing up for games again. Drummond is playing like crap. I don't know what he was thinking running backwards from the twenty. He should have downed the ball right when he caught it. Instead, they took a penalty and lost seven yards. Stupid penalties are killing this team, and killed their game, too. The defensive line kept going offsides because they thought they saw something. The season is over in Detroit. The players don't listen. The coach is done. I don't think the Lions will win another game.
Take the Falcons, Jim.
Your Bengals looked real freakin' good yesterday. Made a brother nervous...
Word is Dre Bly will be playing with a small cast on his wrist on Thursday.

We looked good on one side of the ball. Offensively, the Bengals can play with the Colts. Defensively, they had no real solutions for the Colts.
The Bengals of today remind me *a lot* of the Colts of a few years ago. I just hope we're going in the same direction they're going.

What fun is it if you don't pick a team for that game? Just because you don't want to know of that game's existance doesn't mean you can not pick a winner. One of those teams has to win. One of them will win. So choose wisely.

I will be at Ford Field tomorrow to watch firsthand as the Lions find a way to lose to Atlanta.
we need to get brandon lloyd the ball more...
We left the game after the third quarter. We didn't go expecting anything outside of the usual play from the Lions, so we weren't disappointed when Atlanta bowled them over. It was actually something to watch Vick work.
I got home just after the two minute warning, and I gotta say: Orlovski's got an arm, confidence, and he's not afraid to run.
I say, with the extra days the Lions have until the next game, fire the coach, and just have someone evaluate this offense for the rest of the season. Let all the quarterbacks split the remaining games, and figure out who won't be coming back for the offense. Hell, there's a chance the Lions might just win a game if they do that.
I feel sorry for the defense this year, because they have been good enough. However, the Lions' offense doesn't run, and it doesn't pass. That means it has nothing to fall back on. I think Orlovski could establish a real passing game under a coach who is willing to throw for more than five yards per down. Assuming Roy Williams, Mike Williams, and Scotty Vines all come back next year, along with Marcus Pollard and Cory Slescinger(sp?), all they need are some decent blockers on the line, and it can't be that hard to find some big bodies who can get the job done enough times in a game to allow the quarterback to make plays.
So, new coach, new attitude, maybe there's a chance for next year.
But, in Detroit, we say that every year at Thanksgiving.
I'm not holding my breath.
NFL offenses are typically too complicated to fire a coach at midseason. Just wait 'til the ship sinks completely before building a new one.
Right now word is Mooch may have coached his last game. I didn't hear that myself, someone told me who watched the news.

Well, the Lions held up their end of the deal and played a completely miserable game.
Are the Lions the New Bengals?
How is this Mooch's fault solely? What about Millen?

I'm not picking the Sunday night game. That game should be removed from the schedule.
What fun is it if you don't pick a team for that game? Just because you don't want to know of that game's existance doesn't mean you can not pick a winner. One of those teams has to win. One of them will win. So choose wisely.
Fine, I'll take the Jets.
Jim and Rob are gunna make fuck!
It's also Millen's fault, but that's more because he doesn't know what an offensive line looks like, and he was the idiot who hired a coach that doesn't fit with the offense he drafted. Plus, he was ready to keep Moorningway(sp?). But, ultimately, this falls on ownership, because Millen doesn't have enough of a clue, yet they gave him a five year contract extension before he had a chance to manage him out of work this season.
jla, we're gonna need a jay feely alt-id, please

The Bengal game, despite the second half letup, was tremendous! There is nothing like an NFL game. It was akin to a concert in terms of loudness and fan enthusiasm.
I went 9-5 over the weekend, putting me at 90-58, 60.81%.

You and Mooch can console each other over a beer.
Man, I feel bad for Mooch. I look upon him like I looked upon most of the Bengal coaches Mike Brown hired before Marvin Lewis: you just know the guy's not being given the best opportunity to win thanks to upper management.
Peter King today says that Millen has one more chance with the Ford family. His next coach has to produce.

I can't view your 75% rate on a level with mine or PenWing's, as examples. We've picked nearly 150 games. You've picked 48.
Fine!
Then I'll unpost it!

When you catch up with us in terms of numbers of games you've picked this season, then we can talk.
You mean...we can't talk right now?
I HATE YOU I HATE YOU I HATE! YOU'RE ALWAYS SO MEAN TO ME!

No, no, little buddy. That is not what I meant.
Calm down. Please come out and talk.
But you do see my point, don't you? Your 75% rate is nice, but you've only risked it on 48 games. Pen and I have taken a chance at nearly 150 games. The comparison of your rate to ours isn't a fair one on that basis.
Are we all better now?
I know, Jim, I'm just messin' around. More than anything, I added it up so I wouldn't have to do it again.

You should've taken the Bengals.
I'm 10-5 for Sunday. I was close on a couple of my wrong picks, but close just doesn't cut it.
I went 11-4 and got to celebrate the most satisfying Bengals victory since 1990.
It was a good day in the Jackson apartment.
And the Buckeyes get Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. Tempe has been very, very good to the Scarlet and Grey.
Also 11-4 thus far, although I still have a lot of picks to go...
This Bootsy Collins video is fun..hahahaha..

Sure, the game isn't over yet, but at 42-0 with 7:06 remaining, I don't think the Eagles will be soaring back to win this one.

There's only one thing about Detroit and Green Bat. Detroit hasn't won there since before '91. Jason Hanson really wants to win this one, so maybe he can get the team motivated to perform for him, but still, that's quite a losing streak to overcome right now. However, Green Bay is really bad, worse than the Lions, if that's possible, so maybe Detroit can pull off the impossible and win won for the kicker.
OK, that was really, really bad.

Bengals Feel Lions' Pain
Geoff Hobson, cincinnatibengals.com
The Bengals are walking into a Lions den of protestors Sunday livid over the way the Lions have been managed during a stretch the club has a 20-57 record since Matt Millen became president. Millen claimed his second head coach last month when he canned Steve Mariucci before his third season was complete.
Fans are being urged to adopt the Bengals for the day by wearing orange and radio station WDFN-AM is directing an “Angry Fan March” around Ford Field before the game.
It hits a little too close to home for Bengals veterans who endured similar ire during the first three seasons of Paul Brown Stadium, when the Bengals went 12-36 before the hiring of head coach Marvin Lewis.
“Protests?” second-year linebacker Landon Johnson asked, and eight-year linebacker Brian Simmons smiled and put his hand on Johnson’s shoulder.
“Now here is an example of the new guys,” Simmons said. “It doesn’t matter what happened before with this team. He doesn’t know about it. He doesn’t know about the fans that came to the game with bags over their heads. He doesn’t know they put up signs that got pulled down by security, or people flying airplanes over with messages.
“It’s not fair to the players. These guys are putting it on the line.”
Right tackle Willie Anderson, the man who has played in more Bengals games than anyone still active with 155, cringes at the mention of the protests and just hopes the Bengals don’t get caught up in it as a guy who has been on teams that could only spoil playoff runs.
“Detroit can still play football. I’m sure their players aren’t asking for any sympathy. I’m sure they’re going to turn it around,” Anderson said. “I’ve been through seven years of crazy stuff, but things are going to turn around because those guys have the talent.
I’m not going to sit here and worry about what their fans are going to do. I’m sure their fans may have a change of heart. I can’t worry about that. What I do know looking at this film, this defensive line doesn’t give a damn about what these fans are doing. Their defensive line is not the reason for their record. Or their entire defense.”
Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer says his team has heard it might have some new fans Sunday, and he thinks it might help that it has some players who have been through the same thing.
“One thing is, our team, a lot of guys who have been here for a long time, know what it's like to be on that end of a losing season and a coach possibly getting fired,” Palmer said. “A coach got fired. You understand that some teams in that situation just hope for the season to be over. And we understand that we need to go in and handle our business and not worry about who's cheering for who, what boycott's going on, if a guy's running through the stands with a sign that says "Fire Millen," we can't worry about that.
“It comes down to the same thing we talk about week-in and week-out; we need to handle our business. We need to do what we do well and not worry about what they're doing defensively, what's going on in the stands, what's going on, on their sideline. We just need to handle our jobs."
As Lewis said, “Their problems can't become our problems. We've got business to take care of. It's a big football game for us. We're going to prepare that way. We've got to be ready to play our tails off.”

It was an easy pick, wasn't it...
It didn't used to be. There was a time (before Matt Millen came to town, the season before, actually) when Detroit was known to pull off a big win against a playoff bound team late in the season. Over the last five years, the Lions have lost their courage. It's sad, really...
I never knew why Millen impressed the Ford family anyway. Millen was a former player doing TV. I didn't think then (and I sure as hell don't think now) that that qualified him for GM material. And his record speaks for itself.
Anybody you know going to game and going to wear orange in protest?

Not that I know of. I think wearing orange and rooting for the Bengals is the best way to send a message to the Fords. Forget the fire Millen chants, just root for the Begals in Ford Field. And if this garbage continues next year, we should root for the visiting team every home game.
I can kick myself for picking the Chiefs. Though I'm glad they lost. Nothing against the Chiefs, really, but I need them to keep losing. The Bengals play them at Arrowhead to finish the season and I want the game meaningless for the Chiefs so they'll basically lie down like dogs.
If Orlovsky doesn't start the second half, I might stop watching. The fans have been civil, so there really isn't any reason to watch this game.
And the Bengals are champions of the AFC North for 2005! This guarantees them a home playoff game at worst.
I stopped watching the game before it ended. Harrington came in in the fourth, right? Shows how much I was paying attention. Still, I know how you like to watch him Jim, so I'm glad that at least one of us got something out of this game. Well, you got two things, you bastard!
Then again, maybe I did get something. Maybe Orlovsky will get the last start. Eh, who am I kidding? Garcia will start the last game, too. Glad I won't be home to watch it.
I went 11-5 this past week. The Pack did not come to play last night.
My totals stand at 126-70, 64.29%.
Week 15: another 9-7
Total: 116-80
59.2%
I must admit, I am surprised that I have been able to stay so close to 60% this season. The last few weeks I made my guess based on the standings. Last week I went back to just picking names again, although some were based on standings, but I didn't actually look at the standings to make my picks. I have no idea what that means.
The local radio was talking about what might happen with Harrington next year. They seem to think the Jets would be a great fit for him. They also talked about why Eli Manning is so successful in NYG. They said the management sat down with him and asked how he wanted to play, and what he needed, and then they went out and built that around him. The other thing they did was provide him with veteran recievers from the start. They contrasted this with what Millen did when he drafted Joey. The feeling here is that had Millen sat down with Joey and actually built the offense around how Joey liked to play, Joey would be a very successful quarterback right now. I hope Joey does go someplace that sucks and turns the whole thing around by being exactly the quarterback that team needs to kick start the offense.
Then there is Dre Bly. The question is does he need to be traded or can the right coach turn him into a team player? Of course, since Millen will still be here next year, that begs the question can Millen hire the right coach? Who is the right coach for Detroit? The local media is mentioning some big names, including Bill Parcels, who is a good friend of Millen. Thing is, Mariucci was also a good friend of Millen. And Mooch also had success before coming here. Would Detroit be better off with a big name coach, or should they look to someone with no head coaching experiancing looking to break in and make his mark? I'm actually more in favor of the latter. I would love to see the next Lovey Smith or Marvin Lewis come to Detroit and turn this thing around. The sad thing is Millen could have had either one of those guys, but he went with his friend instead. Not only that, the media is now saying that there may be truth to the rumor that Lewis or his agent called Millen asking for an interview. Millen took a fine to hire Mooch without conducting a minority interview. At the time the media was told, and believed, that no one wanted to be the minority interview because Millen was going to hire Mooch anyway. But, if these guys were calling, and they probably were, then that shows extreme negligence on Millen's part not to interview them. With only 32 head coaching jobs in the league, there is now way they didn't call.
Frankly, I think Millen's in over his head. He hired Mooch but then has no idea how Mooch runs his practices? (it was reported that Millen grew tired of Mooch's less than intense practices)
He drafts WRs #1 in 3 consecutive drafts?
I think many teams are kicking themselves in their oversight of Marvin Lewis. I praise the heck out of Mike Brown and his daughter, Katie, in that hire. Smartest coaching hire the Bengal organization has made since Forrest Gregg in 1980.

The Lions scored three touchdowns on a Pittsburgh team tbat absolutely had to win on Sunday. The two touchdowns Pittsburgh won by were caused by Lions' turnovers that should not have happened, and would not have happened if not for the losing atmosphere in the locker room. Playoff experienced or not, the Bengals have a better team all around than the Lions. I do not have faith that the Stealers can beat them based on how they played with their season on the line last Sunday against one of the worst teams in the league.
I know Pittsburgh comes into Cincy on a four game winning streak, but I'm with PW: The Steelers let the Lions hang around far too long. And the Steelers last four wins included games against some of the poorerst offenses in the NFL--Detroit, Cleveland, and Chicago.
If Carson Palmer's healthy, I think the Bengals win this one.
Redskins over Bucs.
Patriots over Jags.
Giants over Panthers.
Bengals over Steelers.
Been there...done that.
I can't stand the Patriots!
So much for the Bengals. Their chances went down on the first play. Nothing sucks more than that.
As for the Giants, that was embarrassing.
I'm 2-2 for Wildcard Weekend.

If Carson Palmer's healthy, I think the Bengals win this one.

Does an ACL ligament tear qualify as healthy?
I also went 2-2. Palmer going down last night was a tough pill to swallow. The team rallied around Kitna as best they could, but you don't have much hope when your MVP finalist gets his knee blown up two offensive plays into the game.
Here's hoping the Steelers lose asap.
gentlemen...i am back. Its good to see you all with the playoffs here in our midst. Hope u had a happy wild card weekend, i know i did cause i picked the games and got em all. Anyway it will be good to talk football these last couple of weeks of the season

Welcome back.
Frankly, I would have had a better wildcard weekend if the Steelers hadn't blown up Carson Palmer's knee.
yeah i felt bad for the bengals cause that really sucked. cause you knew they werent going to win after that though they fought bravely.

Jim that sounded kinda gay.
I gotta agree. These boards have slipped way past the acceptable amount of gayness. Please stop. Thank you.

PW, I like all but one of those picks.
We have seen so far this year that QBs in their first playoff starts don't fare so well (Palmer notwithstanding, since he was in for all of two plays, one of which was the longest pass play in Bengal postseason history).

We'll see. Chicago's strength is it's defense. Of course, that's also Carolina's strength. The difference is, Chicago knows it can't score, while Carolina thinks it can, if that makes any sense.
My only reason going against Chicago is that Grossman still can't be much more than rusty. And this will be the biggest stage he's played on ever.
Chicago's D is legit, no doubt about it. But can they shut out the Carolina offense?
This has all the makings of a 6-3 or 10-7 game. I'm going with Carolina only because of their experience.
Maybe the Panthers should take a page out of the Steelers playbook and just crash into Grossman's knee.
And with that in mind, maybe we should be picking Pittsburgh over Indianapolis?
well i am and not for that reason. I just believe in the bottom of my soul that somehow pit is going to out tough the colts cause no one is giving them a chance. ill take that chance...

Denver is incredibly overrated, I fell that they don't even belong in the playoffs......Pats will embarass them worse that what Carolina did to the Gints.

They lost 28-20. At a time when Denver was a dominant team and New England was an injury-riddled mess. Denver should've kicked the shit out of New England, but they didn't. 28-20 ain't exactly and anal blasting. 28 - 3, that's an anal blasting. 23 - 0, that's an anal blasting.
But don't take the "Die" comment to heart. I said the same thing to someone else. The Pats won. I'm continuing the trend and hoping for the same results. Superstitious? Nawwwwwwwwwwwwww.
they didnt get blasted by the final score but i watched that game and denver was just tougher. Yeah the pats were hurting but ive seen them hurt before and still come out and work teams. I just see denver IN denver getting rid of the pats this postseason

that doesn't mean shit....the Dolphins beat Carolina this year, while Carolina made Gus Frerrot look like Dan Marino.
dang dude. you a raiders fan or something? And it does matter. Any time you beat a team and you face them again that season your confidence is perked by the fact that you know you can beat them.
nah....I'm a Dolphins fan......I have no vested interest in the game......I'm just saying it doesn't mean shit that they beat them once during the regular season......I'll put my money on the God of Football Tom Brady.

Nah, I doubt the Steelers go that route this week.
I feel that Palmer would have led the Bengals to a victory. Now the Steelers get to face Manning and I feel that Manning will lead the Colts over the Steelers.

Just for contrast, I'll pick the home teams.
Pittsburgh will take the Broncos and the Seahawks will take the Panthers.
I would have picked Carolina but Foster and Peppers got injured.
Pitt and Sea...
I'm also going with Pittsburgh and Seattle to move on to the Super Bowl. I like the Panthers' experience at this level, but they've suffered some injuries of significance. The Steelers seem on an incredible roll right now. They've been able to move on by knocking out opposing quarterbacks and overcoming bad refereeing. They seem to operate best when the pressure's all on the other team.
I hope to God that the Seahawks make it in. That's my fiance's team and one of us needs to be happy with the world of football.
I'm happy the Steelers made it. I'll be pulling for them on the 5th...
yeah me too... its too bad about carolina though
I didn't care either way about the NFC game when it came down to Carolina/Seatle. Been watching it on and off tonight. Too bad it's been so unbalanced though -- when I'm watched a game I'm not emotionally involved with, I hope to see a good game on the field to watch.
I hate the Steelers. I've hated the Steelers since the 70s. The only rooting interest I'll have in this year's Super Bowl is rooting against them.
Go 'Hawks!
Two blowouts. Yay.
Any chance the Super Bowl will be a good game?

I don't want it to be a good game. I want the Seahawks to crush the Steelers. Or at worse, the Seahawks to beat the Steelers by 1 pt.

You really need to get out of Ohio man...
Excuse me, but I've forgotten why I'm supposed to care what you think.
Such bitterness man...What the hell's up your ass?
What do you expect, telling me I need to get out of Ohio?
Don't make smart ass remarks like that and I won't either. Fair enough?
It was a freakin' joke man. How about you not take everything as a personal slight and lighten up instead?

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (AP) -- A 17-year-old high school student said he was humiliated when a teacher made him sit on the floor during a midterm exam in his ethnicity class -- for wearing a Denver Broncos jersey.
The teacher, John Kelly, forced Joshua Vannoy to sit on the floor and take the test Friday -- two days before the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Broncos 34-17 in the AFC championship game. Kelly also made other students throw crumpled up paper at Vannoy, whom he called a "stinking Denver fan," Vannoy told The Associated Press on Monday.
Kelly said Vannoy, a junior at Beaver Area Senior High School, just didn't get the joke.
"If he felt uncomfortable, then that's a lesson; that's what [the class] is designed to do," Kelly told The Denver Post. "It was silly fun. I can't believe he was upset."
Vannoy was wearing a No. 7 Broncos jersey on Friday, because he is a fan of John Elway, the Broncos' retired Hall of Fame quarterback.
Vannoy said he was so unnerved he left at least 20 questions blank on the 60-question test, and just wants out of Kelly's class because he's afraid the teacher won't treat him fairly now that the story reached the media.
"I'm going to have to deal with him for two more nine weeks [school quarters] and he's going to want revenge somehow," Vannoy said Monday. "I took the test. I'm shaking. I'm furious. I didn't know what to do."
Kelly, who wore a Ben Roethlisberger jersey Friday, and his principal, Thomas Karczewski, didn't immediately return messages left on their school voice mail Monday.
Big Beaver Falls Area School District Superintendent Donna Nugent said she was aware of the situation, but said confidentiality rules prevent her from commenting specifically.
"We'll take whatever action we need to in order for the student to feel comfortable," Nugent said.
_________
This teacher needs to be disciplined for his inexcusable behavior and extremely poor pedagogy (were any other students made to sit on the floor and endure paper being thrown at them during this exam?).
Assuming this is what happened, the only acceptable course of action is to fire the teacher.
The quotes from the teacher do not show him denying the events.
But even I wonder if dismissal is too severe. Formal reprimand for the permanent file, suspension without pay, and a letter of apology to the student, together, all sound OK to me.
A teacher does not act this way.
He shouldn't, no doubt about it.
This teacher, assuming this is what he did, has lost the trust of the students and the parents. He cannot teach. There are rules, perhaps they are unspoken and unwritten, but they are there. A teacher cannot be a bully. This teacher, if this is what he did, is nothing more than a bully, and the lesson he is teaching is that it's okay to bully someone who does not agree with you. Maybe certain government officials (cheap crack, I know) think that this kind of behavior is acceptable, but I most certainly do not. This behavior, assuming this actually happened (I can't stress that enough) is unacceptable.
Ask yourself, Jim, if it happened in your daughter's classroom, not to your daughter, but to her classmate, would you want your daughter in this teacher's class? Would you want anyone in his class? I think that's the way you have to look at it. A class room is not a frat house.

I understand all of that, but in judging whether or not to fire him, I would genuinely have to look at the totality of his performance, his work history.
Maybe I'm just sensitive to people losing their jobs.
It's important to be sensitive to people losing their jobs. The fact is, this is the guy's profession. But his actions influence generations of students. How can he make up for this, when this is his response?

That's a proper response from someone who should be a teacher? I'm sorry, but this guy needs to find a new line of work. Let him stay on through the end of the year, and then let him go. That should give him enough time to find something to hold him over while he goes back to school to get a job that won't give him the opportunity to teach that something clearly wrong is right as long as it's done in good humor.

The thing is, though, I would think if this is his attitude that it would have manifested itself before now (his delight in finding belittling his students funny or something one shouldn't get upset over).
But you are right: I would not want my daughters to take any of his classes. Especially if he's a goddamn Steeler fan.
I'm guessing there is an untold story that happened between the student and the teacher. Perhaps the student teased the teacher in some way, prompting this kind of response. Still, immaturity at the highest level cannot be accepted. Had the teacher taken responsibility and appologized, perhaps I would not have such an extreme opinion, but it's that lack of caring that he was wrong, and his lack of owning up to his mistake that bothers me more than the mistake itself.
I agree, his lack of remorse or contrition is not good.
Super Bowl predictions, anyone?
I predict that we will see some very funny commercials and have no memory of what they are advertising.
I also predict that the half time show will be as enjoyable as last year's half time show. Hopefully, the single band half time shows will continue after this year.
I further predict a slow first quarter, with one team finally getting it's running game going in the second quarter. The team to take the lead by ten first will win, unless that team is Seatle, then Pittsburgh could still have a shot.
Finally, I predict there will be a winning touchdown to seal this game, be it a come from behind score, or a tie breaking score, and it will be on the ground.
