They're not nice....I bought the Captain Atom (as he was Steve Trevor's war buddy in Perez continuity....so I needed him for the WW collection). Dude's arms look like stubby little flippers. Overall nasty piece of shit, that.
Posted By: Beardguy57 Re: The toy aisle - 2006-08-22 3:40 AM
Upon closer inspection...the arms ARE rather short..

Never mix up Turner with MC2.

I passed on this wave myself. I'm pretty much Superman/Batmanned out & the others just didn't interest me. I'm looking forward to the JSA Atom 2pack & the Huntress fig from the Crisis waves.

Same here. For me a complete set would include Mr. Terrific, Johnny Thunder, Star-spangled Kid & Hawkgirl from the gold/silver ages. That makes for a crowded shelf so I'll probably pass on the modern age JSA figs even though they look pretty snazzy.

Cool! That looks like it is meant to represent the very EARLIEST Wonder Woman ..shortly after she was first introduced....

Same figure without the skirt and at a better angle (and...back when DCD meant quality):

I like this WW but it's pretty much a statue (a tippy one at that). The FA WW is the one I use on the JSA shelf.

They're both terrible. I just confused the crapass Superman/Batman line with the crapass Identity Crisis line that DCD put out recenlty. Both are absolutely shit-tastic sculpts.

I feel that the 4.5 and 10 inch JLA figures based on the animated JLA - JLU series are excellent. I have both sets of the seven main characters.

Some nifty Wasps from an upcoming Marvel legends wave.
I actually like the varients better than the main one.

Yeah, better yet it's the one from Jim Shooter's classic run on Avengers. That would pretty much complete the lineup for my bookcase cept Jocasta. It's been fun seeing characters that you would never figured being made in stores right & left.

Posted By: Midnight Spectre 2.0 Re: The toy aisle - 2006-09-20 5:54 PM
That's pretty cool. I'll have to do some searching for that in the near future.

Now, let's play a game called "DC Direct vs. (Mattel) DC Superheroes." I'll post pictures of figures as made by both companies and you judge whose kicks more ass.

Let's get started with some side-by-side comparisons starring the figures from DC Superheroes wave 4:

DC Direct (DCD) Crisis on Infinite Earths Brainiac(left), DC Super Heroes (DCSH) Brainiac (right)

DCD Crisis on Infinite Earths Lex Luthor (left), DCSH Lex Luthor (right)

From left to right: DCD Darkseid (From New Gods 2 Pack), DCSH Darkseid, DCD Superman/Batman series 2 Darkseid

Now for the "judge for yourself" comparisons:

DCD Batman: Hush Batman

DCSH Wave 3 Batman

DCD Return of Superman Steel

DCSH Steel

DCD Secret Files Mr. Freeze

DCSH Mr. Freeze

DCD Infinite Crisis Mongul

DCSH Mongul

DCD Superman/Batman series 2 Supergirl

DCSH Supergirl

Thanks, Beardy...but I really didn't like those ones. That's from the 'Pony Tales' series that ran long after I outgrew ponies (only to re-connect with them in my late 20's... ).

It's all about the original pilot episode in my head actually ('Escape From Midnight Castle' or 'Firefly's Adventure')...everything that's come since is complete shit.

It is a metaphor for gay and lesbian life. We just want to be left alone to do our thing, and it seems there's always someone out there who, one way or another, wants to fuck with us.

MEM, I'm still pissed at DCD for shutting down the SA Legion figures with only 12 more LSH members to go..they'd have had them ALL out by now! And that represents MOST of the girl members..and my FAV LSH member of ALL time..Karate Kid.

It was a mistake going with the silver age costumes from their Adventure days IMHO. The Cockrum/Grell costumes would have sold better.

Some old pics of my expanded Legion. I've since done them all except Princess Projectra & Element Lad.

Actually that was an old pic before there was a SA Colossal Boy & Ferro Lad. When DCD released them I picked them up & Ferro Lad was redone into a respectable looking Wildfire. Dream Girl is actually one of my poorest looking customs. The Supergirl from the first Supes wave made a good base for Triplicate Girl, Phantom Girl & Shadow Lass.

No, the Mini-Mates. The company made a bunch of Batman playsets. They made a Batmobile, and Batwing, the cave, a Catwoman cycle with Batglider, a mini Batmobile with Batman and Robin, a Batman and Joker toxic chemical scene, a Nightwing set, and a Superman vs. Darkseid set. I purchased the first three as gifts for some friends when Toys R Us had them on clearance.

The Young Justice figures look good except Clark does not look like Tom Welling; I have a really good Clark - Tom Welling figure that is dead on in resemblence.

I like the Jonah Hex - Batgirl - Superman figures.

I personally think the "DC Direct" Silver Age Superman from a few years back looked more like a Curt Swan drawing than this one does.

I know it is a matter of taste but I disagree with you on that call,G.. although the one on Ebay you posted the link to is not bad looking.

My favorite Superman figure is the 12" one I own, based on how he looked in the 1997 WB cartoon.

Love to see a Superman figure based on the 1966 Superman cartoon. He looked awesome in that cartoon... more "Curt Swan - ish "than in anything else I've ever seen.

That is pretty fuckin' sweet.

They're starting a second wave of "Women of the DC Universe" busts based on Terry Dodson's art. The first will be of Wondy:

Cheetah, Starfire, Huntress and Batwoman are to follow with a few more thereafter. I loved the first series and plan on getting these too...

The fucking jackass I ordered 25th Anniversary Shipwreck from through Amazon crammed it in a fucking envelope instead of a box. When it had arrived, it's card was damaged.

The 25th Anniversary Cobra Legions were depressing as well. They were made of a cheaper plastic than the rest of the 25th Anniversary line.

Yeah, I ordered the red suit one. I like how the brown almost looks like leather on the yellow one. However, I just felt it wouldn't quite be Daredevil for me if I didn't just go standard red.

I might try and get the yellow statue one day. Then, I can use them for bookends!

The Mignola is my very favorite of the range!

Closely followed by the Wagner!

Yeah, I likes it too...alas from afar. It's the only one going for $150 or more on eBay. I was broke when that one came out so I had to pass it up at the time. NOw, I'm not broke but, I just can't see spending that kinda coin on this thing.

One day, it will be mine. Just not soon...

My faves of the ones I have are the Bisley, Risso and Wagner.

Just got the Paul Pope one in the mail today...

The story it was based on was (as I recall) a bit shitty but the stat is cool. I should get the Kubert in a couple of days.

Today I also piocked up the Batman and Joker figs from The Batman and Son wave. Uschi said the sculpt was shitty but I think it's OK.

Looks like Christmas came early in the Bastard household!!!

I'm sorry to hear that, basty!

It's a real pisser when you miss out on something and it becomes more expensive, unless you're Rob and it's the animated Batman statue - Then that's funny as fuck!

I got lucky because when that was released, I was at Wizard World! I managed to pick that and the Risso and Bolland one up at the same time!

This year, I got the Wagner and Ross versions!

Next year, it'll be the Miller, Adams and Lee versions!

I have only been buying the ones I really like - for both monetary and space reasons!

Since it's an Iron Man figure, with Robert Downey Jr portaying the Armored Avenger, and Tony Stark as well, the figure ought to come with accessories such as:

A bottle of booze
&
a shot glass

PS - the figures look pretty damn good!

Well, after a decade of doing Big Finish audios as Number Five, Davison has morphed his portrayal along the lines of how he pretty much would have always played the character. Naturally, TPTB back in the day had other ideas, and we're left with the vulnerable 5th Doc.

And, tits to all of you. Charity or not, Time Crash was some awesomeness...

The Joker looks so key! I am so getting this.
Posted By: the G-man Re: The toy aisle - 2007-12-12 6:57 PM
Joker looks pretty good. Batman not so much, especially the use of the damn "Superman blue" color for the cape and cowl (not to mention trunks, gloves and boots).

The use of this blue is especially egregious for a KJ Batman figure, in my opinion, given that Bollard drew the cape and cowl as black with blue highlights. As such, the figure hardly captures the character's look in the book.

Posted By: harleykwin Re: The toy aisle - 2007-12-12 6:59 PM
In all honesty, I wouldn't be buying it for the Batman figure - its all about the Joker ... love that one.

While in shadow, yes. But when Batman was in the light, it was clearly the blue cape and cowl.

Good point, doc. I had forgotten about that sequence.

Still, the coloring of the blue was a lot deeper than what's seen on the tie. If DC insists on painting Batman blue I wish they'd at least use a midnight or navy blue, instead of that light color they tend to use.

So if G-Man keeps it in the closet with him, the cowl will be the appropriate color for him...

I'm waiting for it to be collected in a single trade. It looks pretty good, but I prefer my books collected in a single volume.

You know, if DC published "Watchmen" today, they'd probably collect it into three trades instead of one edition at the end.

The Justice line kind of stumbled by doing armorred versions in the last couple of waves. Hopefully this line still has legs & we can see some other silver aged figures that wouldn't get made otherwise. (Metal Men, Doom Patrol, Legion & a Giganta figure)
Posted By: Pariah Carey Re: The toy aisle - 2007-12-16 9:26 PM
the armored versions are teh suxors. But DCD was scraping the barrel of the JUSTICE series there... the 70's Supergirl and Batgirl AF's were inspired by Ross' doorsized posters, not the mini.

And Ross is a fan of the Cockrum Legion, not SA; see the highend Legion print he did, and the Legion page in JUSTICE #12. I would LOVE figures of them in this line BTW...

Booster Gold, worth your time. It's very much in the vein of the current Brave and Bold series. Just fun. Plus, Dan Jurgens is back to doing what he does best: draw.

Is Annihilation out as a complete book yet? Or, is it split into multiple volumes? I've been wanting to try this since Jefferson Glacier posted about it awhile back.

What did you think of the JMS Silver Surfer mini?
Posted By: Grimm Re: The toy aisle - 2007-12-17 12:22 AM
Jurgens needs to stick to art.

three volumes, I believe. do what I do: read that shit in the bookstore.

nope. I don't pick up singles from DC and Marvel anymore. not worth it.

Am still pissed that DC Direct quit the SA set, and they were more than halfway through it... only 12 more LSH figures to go.

Sweet, but if each segment is $150 a pop that's pretty frickin' steep. And Wondy's face does seem a lil off.

Posted By: Jeremy Re: The toy aisle - 2007-12-19 3:41 AM
In this case, especially Supes. I mean who the fuck runs like that? Bats and Hal look more accurate.
Posted By: Beardguy57 Re: The toy aisle - 2007-12-19 4:18 AM
Superman looks more like he's just landed, because, as said already, that sure ain't no normal running position!
Posted By: Prometheus Re: The toy aisle - 2007-12-19 5:17 AM
That's because they're so close together. What happens when he swings down and takes off Canary's skull...or when he swings up and blows straight through Batman's ribcage?
Posted By: Jeremy Re: The toy aisle - 2007-12-19 7:13 AM
I think that's why Bats is running so much faster, with Supes on one side and Wondy on the other, he doesn't stand a chance.

I'll stick with my animated 10" JLA - JLU figures of Batman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Hawkgirl, Flash, Martian Manhunter and Superman, thanks!

They are all standing still with their arms down at their sides.

As noted earlier, I'm usually not a fan of the "light blue" Batman toys. However, this "Silver Age" Batman figure sort of appeals to me, given it's resemblance to the Captain Action and Mego dolls of my boyhood:

I just grabbed the new set of WW figs (Diana, Circe, and Diana in her civies....passed on Donna)...and far and away the best money I've spent on DCD product in a long while. They not only look spot on, they're sturdily constructed and don't break at the joints simply being removed from the bubble.
Posted By: Beardguy57 Re: The toy aisle - 2007-12-31 8:43 AM
I just found this gem on Ebay:

This is one of the " Gay Billy" series of 12" tall dolls released by Totem, INC., in 1995 for an Aids Benefit. Original cost: $275.00, but I paid less than a third of that.

This figure is named "Tyson", and is not connected in any way, shape, or form with Mike Tyson.

Tyson is anatomically correct, and, ah, as the promo reads for the figure, is larger than life..

Totem, INC., is now defunct, which means these figures are rare.

As for articulation... does the junk have a joint? I mean, if he has a wang, it might as well fit into Gay Doll #2's poop chute...

I dunno about that one, but it was a gay man who created the doll, so, it might be possible that one could pose the figures in obscene poses, though my Tyson figure will remain clothed as he will be on display on my desk..

However, my 12" Worf figure might take a liking to him... hehe!

Nah.. Worf is tired of falling for women who die, leave him for another man, or who get a new body, and a new life which forbids being involved with a previous lover or husband...

Ahhh! I totally remember these - they were all over the Village back in the day. I remember asking a store owner which one was the most popular and he said the Latino version always sold out...

I got my Tyson doll today. He is anatomically correct. He looked kinda slutty in his army guy uniform, so I put a Jedi outfit on him from Qui Gonn Junn, and painted his gotee black and made it fuller. He looks pretty good:

He is one bad ass gay Jedi!

Heh, Qui Gonn Junn's Jedi pants are too small for Tyson.

The camo pants do make him a bit more unique!

Yes, the Grundy is the best of that bunch.

I checked out a new shop today, but they just had collectibles (toys, statues, mugs, etc). I was a bit disappointed, but they did have a motherload of Doctor Who crap. Including this:

This arrived in the mail today. It's fantastic!

The display stand is pretty cool; it's black and thus looks less obvious than a bright white stand would, and, as the ad says, it has the Star Wars logo on it.

I highly recommend this figure, but warning! Don't try to put his laser pistol in the holster - it won't go in, and you might rip the holster.

If they make a Sideshow 12" Bespin Darth Vader, I would buy that!

However I am collecting the Ralph McQuarrie concept art based figures from the 30th Anniversary Star Wars collection.

This week I got the concept Stormtrooper, the Snowtrooper, Starkiller Hero figure, Han Solo, R2-D2&C-3PO.

And at least a few posters would be writing long missives about how riding a robot dinosaur was a "natural progression" for the character and that anyone who disagrees is "stuck in the silver age."

Not the best face sculpt. Looks a little too much like Joan Crawford or Faye Dunaway and the character is usually drawn with a rounder face.

I dunno - it works for me... if there was a thing I would be fangirlish about, it would be the length of the "ears" on her cowl...bit too long, but otherwise I totally dig this version...

Adapted from the legendary comic strip,WILL EISNER'S THE SPIRIT is a classic action-adventure-romance told by genre-twister Frank Miller (creator of 300 and SIN CITY.) It is the story of a former rookie cop who returns mysteriously from the dead as the SPIRIT (Gabriel Macht) to fight crime from the shadows of Central City. His arch-enemy, the OCTOPUS (Samuel L. Jackson) has a different mission: he's going to wipe out Spirit's beloved city as he pursues his own version of immortality. The Spirit tracks this cold-hearted killer from Central City's rundown warehouses, to the damp catacombs, to the windswept waterfront … all the while facing a bevy of beautiful women who either want to seduce, love or kill our masked crusader.

This 1:6 scale figure is clothed in an authentically detailed film outfit including suit, overcoat, hat and non-removable mask. Manufactured to order. Packaged in a deluxe 4-color window box with a fifth panel.

I'll pick up Ice from the JLI wave. The face isn't quite right but always liked the character. Black Canary actually looks good in a costume I never cared for. They definitley captured the Bats from the JLI period.

Posted By: Grimm Re: The toy aisle: NYCC 08! - 2008-04-19 7:00 AM

1) does Elektra turn into a skrull when you stab her?

2) when did the Rock become a SHIELD agent?

3) did we really need figures of Bi-Beast, Cap. Iron Man, Scarlet Spider, and red Hulk?

4) who thought Marvel Transformers was an idea that needed to be brought back? hey, when remember the Hulk turned into a tank? that was so coooooolllll. . .

5) why do they make Superhero Squad figures of Deadpool, Punisher, Elektra, etc? this is the line for little kids, right? wtf?

6) finally, a real DD figure!

7) Nova looks like he can't see out of his helmet.

8) Ult. GA Cap looks decent.

9) Spiral's ok, but could be better. they should take a page from DC Direct and have Art Adams design her.

10) that new Green Goblin design is GOBAWFUL! stop making figures of it!

11) bring on more DCU pics!

No! In the 2002 MOTU toon it was established that King Grayskull ruled Eternia and is the source of He-Man's powers.

I'm diggin the hell out of these. Mattel is kicking ass with this line.

the KC Captain Atom variant is damn cool.

I'm surprised they've got another Orion figure on the way, though, so soon after the last one.

the Infinite Heroes line is also gonna have a shitload of characters, too.

IF Supergirl apparently has had a boob job and doesn't wear panties.

is there really a need for the JLU line now with these other two kick ass lines?

It lives in my arse!

But this one fails. While the arms are deliciously posed in as "i'm about to get outta this" way, there's no crotch strap and that's just poor research. Without a crotch strap, a baby could get out.

Just a heads up if anyone here is interested, DC universe Infinite Heroes were at my local taget. Captain Marvel, Adam Strange, Reverse Flash & Guy Gardner look much much better than advance pics. I think I'm going to like this line but hope they do classic versions of some of the b-listers. While the new Atom costume is OK it's not really the Atom I want.

Are you referring to character selection? It does seem like an odd first wave. No A list heroes except for maybe Captain Marvel.

Joes before hoes.

Should have told your parents that since you're in a Third World country that, technically, you're poor so they can keep their grubby hands off your fucking toys.
They said my Legos were a fire hazard, since they were actually Wegos I made out of wood to have something to play with.

Hasbro has announced that they will no longer produce any o-ring action figures.

Specifically any GI Joe o-ring based action figures.

While they had been producing more modern o-ring free figures for years now they had still made a few as convention exclusives.

Apparently the ones released at Joecon 2010 were the last.

Now I have been on board with the new modern figures for awhile now, and while the GI Joe movie sucked the figures had much improved in articulation.

I haven't bought any o-ring based figures in ages. I really had no interest.

I can't help but think that now they have been canceled how big an impact they had on my life.

The 3 3\4 GI Joe: A Real American Hero line were always my favorite.

I dabbled in others like Star Wars, Transformers, and tons of other figures.

None of them really kept my attention over the years like Joes did though.

It goes back to the point where it's beyond the figures themselves.

It's all the memories of friends and family that went along with it.

I still have a decent amount of my old figures, I don't think I could ever part with them.

And with all that said even if they had not been canceled I don't think I would have ever purchased a new o-ring based figure.

Vintage maybe for nostalgia, but beyond that no interest.

Still I can't help but get that "end of an era" feeling.
