Or, you know, it is just a flashback type book as she is wearing her original Marvel Girl outfit.

I thought she was alive again after the Phoenix: Endsong book?

Jean Grey is the Bill the Cat of the Marvel universe.

I wiki'd End Song. She became the White Phoenix of the Crown and went away to collect herself, so she's definitely alive. Or was that quickly ignored even though it was a great miniseries?

It was ignored by most. Things like that should occur in one of the main X-titles to avoid confusion.
They should use writers that know what's going on with the characters they write about.

From what I've read, Jean is back because the "original" X-men are traveling in time to the modern day Marvel U.
  • the original five x-men time-travel two the present in a pleasantville style story and who are not going to like what they see once they are in the present and will find it unacceptable. Bendis says the time travel aspect of the story is not as important as the character based drama.

Which would seem to imply some sort of "culture clash," not unlike what the characters in "Pleasantville" experienced when they travelled to a fictional reality set approximately forty years in the past ...and which would seem ignore the fact that, in Marvel time, the X-men were students at most ten years ago.

So what's the big culture clash between now and 2002? The quality of internet porn not up to what they hoped by now?

One word about this explains it all:

Honestly, the pic that they have with the characters on it almost looks.....alternate universe counterparts ala Exiles. Captain America is in a bulky armored version of his uniform,Jean in her original X-Men uniform,Thor has swords strapped to his back,Hulk is wearing some weird metal chest plate and wrist bands.Cable is shown holding a big-ass 90's gun,so that's not too different. Cyclops' uniform is kinda reddish and his visor is now "X" shaped and then there's Susan Storm in her currrent FF uniform,Spider-Man and Wolverine in their normal duds. Totally a weird mix of characters.

Regardless of the current series themselves, that's one heck of a poster. Not a fan of Quesada as editor-in-chief, but he certainly produced a nice page here.

I loved the Rocket Raccoon series back when Mignola did it in 1986 at the beginning of his career. Haven't seen the new version yet.

As for resurrecting Jean Grey (for the 20th time, let alone the first time)... why mess with perfection?

Can't they just move on and create a new character?

The original planned storyline (with issue 137) was for Jean Grey to live and get a "psychic lobotomy" that would eliminate her powers, and then she and Scott Summers would marry and have a daughter named Rachel. All that was eliminated when Shooter as ed-in-chief mandated that she had to die because she killed 3 million asparagus-people.

I love how Claremont after a couple years was able to incorporate the continuity that he couldn't put into X-Men because Jean Grey had died. Claremont developed a parallel universe where Jean Grey and Scott had Rachel, and Rachel "time-slipped sideways" into the Marvel-continuity universe where Jean Grey was dead, and joined the New Mutants.
Which I think is actually more interesting and innovative than what Claremont and Byrne had originally planned!

And again, it's gospel at this point, one of the most read and loved storylines in comics history.
So why mess with that?
Why re-write popular continuity, when you could just as easily write a new story with originality, that wouldn't cheapen and bastardize some of Marvel's best-loved continuity?
