McMINNVILLE, Tenn. — A Warren County elementary teacher has been charged with having a sexual relationship with one of her students, a 13-year-old boy.
Quote: Pamela Rogers Turner (search), 27, was charged Monday with 15 counts of sexual battery by an authority figure and 13 counts of statutory rape (search). All the charges involved the same boy.
Turner teaches physical education and coached girls basketball at Centertown Elementary, a Warren County school with grades kindergarten through eight in McMinnville.
District Attorney General Dale Potter said investigators believe some of the offenses happened at the school and some at the boy's home.
Turner lived at the boy's house "for a brief period of time when she was moving from residence to residence," Potter said Tuesday. The boy's parents knew she was living there but didn't know anything about a sexual relationship, Potter said.
Potter declined to comment on the nature of the relationship between Turner and her student, but he said investigators discovered multiple acts of sexual intercourse.
"It's attracting attention because it's a female teacher, and that's a little out of the ordinary," Potter said. "But for us, a sex abuse case is a sex abuse case."

When I was in High-Shool there was an "attractve" female teacher who had sex with some students, but this never got beond the students and the teacher, but what I learned was this teacher was very overweight in high-shool and unpopular. I don't think it takes a phychological genius to realise that in her case she was trying to "fix" her unpopularity in shool. I'm sure there's equally pathetic reasons motivating these other teachers.

The counter-argument you're going to see, James, is that a 13-year old cannot make an informed decision to consent (cognitively or legally). IOW, he may have wanted to, but he "didn't know any better."
I think their would be a huge difference. When you're 13 you are more likely to act on your urges. When you're 18, you would be more concerned about the consequences.

I could easily go out and talk a 13 year old rirls into having sex with me willingly. Even more so if I was in a position of authority. It would still be harmfull and it would still be wrong. I agree though that it wasn't rape, it also wasn't pedophilia. Therefore while I said she should be legally punished definately think the pusnishment should be less severe than if she had raped someone against thier will or had sex with a 5 year old. I don't think she necesarily would need prison time or anything more than a fine and some mental help (this all depends on what comes out in the trial).

Law enforcement officials and sociologists wonder whether there are really more of these cases, or are they just getting more press?
"Certainly the reporting of these kinds of things do prompt other reports," said Tom Eveslage, a journalism professor at Temple University (search). "It gets a little bit more sticky when we start talking about [whether] this justifies the media going gaga over all these kinds of stories."
Female teachers who commit statutory rape still represent a fraction of the number of sex offenders, though few hard numbers are available and the FBI's National Crime Information Center (search) said it doesn't document the occupations of the reported offenders.
Still, the stories make news, because reporters, chat rooms and members of the public are mystified about why a teacher would have sex with a student who's underage.
"Older women involved with underage males is nothing new," said Louis B. Schlesinger, a forensic psychologist at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice (search ) in New York. "That’s been going on many, many, many years. The general view is that it’s a rite of passage. … The guy is lucky."
But the "guy" is also a minor, the "rite of passage," a crime — even if it was consensual sex.
From a criminal standpoint, it has to do with exhibitionism, manipulation, power and a number of other physiological and psychological elements, according to Schlesinger.
Media analysts say the coverage in some media is glorified as salacious when it comes to female teachers having sex with their teenaged students.
Female teachers are often treated differently in the media than male teachers who have sex with underage students.

A Morgan Park High School teacher has been suspended after police said they found her "half naked'' in a car with a 17-year-old student.
The teacher was identified as Mariama Buchanan, 27, of the 9700 block of South Prospect, who was hired to teach English at Morgan Park just last February. It was reportedly her first teaching job. The male student is a member of the school's highly rated football team. Chicago Police have charged both with public indecency, a misdemeanor.
"The teacher was reassigned to administrative duty off-campus as soon as we learned of the incident," CPS spokesman Michael Vaughn said Thursday. He said CPS is investigating the incident.
"Our main concern is for the student and the school community. We will take the appropriate disciplinary action when the investigation has been completed," he said.
Police arrested and charged the teacher and student on Monday, after officers found the two inside a parked car, undressed, around 7 p.m. Police said they were called to the 600 block of West Englewood on a complaint of a "suspicious vehicle."
"Police arrived and saw them both half naked in the car. They were removed from the car and charged accordingly," Pat Camden, a police spokesman said.
"The teacher was reassigned to administrative duty off-campus as soon as we learned of the incident," CPS spokesman Michael Vaughn said Thursday. He said CPS is investigating the incident."
Sources say the 14-year-old boy having an affair with a teacher is cooperating with police, but is reluctant to divulge details for fear of getting her in more trouble.
Action News has been told the boy is in love with the teacher, who is ten years older, and that the two even talked of marriage.

People are still in shock about the arrest Friday of a substitute teacher at Riverside High School for allegedly having an affair with a fourteen-year-old student.
Twenty-four-year-old Angela Stellwag, the daughter of Delran Mayor Joseph Stellwag, has been charged with sexual assault. Police say the two met in 2003 at Beverly City school when he was an eighth grader, and Stellwag was a substitute. Students there say there was lots of talk.

Efforts to contact Stellwag and her attorney were unsuccessful authorities have seized e-mails and love notes between the teacher and teen as evidence.
Attorney Mike Riley represent the boy and his family and says the fourteen-year-old is having a difficult time.

The shock of this relationship being exposed, the intense news interest in the relationship, the fact that he obviously has feelings for this young lady. I just found out that one of the gym teachers at my high school was fired for having sex with his students and had been for years. I met up with an old friend from high school Saturday and we were talking about old times, and teachers as she flipped through my yearbook, she told me about that then. I knew there was a teacher who was nicknamed Chester the Molester by my sister, when I went there (my sister graduated from there 11 years before I did), but I didn't know about the other one until the other day. I'm so glad I wasn't in either of their classes when I was there.

I didn't take woodshop during High School (I took it in middle school) but two of my friends did.

A 30-year-old teaching intern has been arrested after police found her with a 16-year-old male student in her car as the woman's toddler was strapped into a car seat in the back.
Margaret De Barraicua and the student are believed to have been having "an ongoing consensual sexual relationship for several months," Sacramento police spokesman Sgt. Justin Risley said.
The investigation began Saturday when police received a report of a car parked behind an elementary school, Risley said. Officers found the windows of the car steamed up and could see two people moving inside, he said.
When the car door opened, officers found De Barraicua, the teenager and the teacher's 2-year-old child, Risley said.
The teenager was in a language and arts class that De Barraicua has taught since September, when she started her paid internship at McClatchy High School.
De Barraicua, who is married, was placed on paid administrative leave Tuesday while the investigation is ongoing, said Maria Lopez, a spokeswoman for the Sacramento City Unified School District. The toddler was released to De Barraicua's husband.
Before the internship, De Barraicua worked in the district for about two years as a substitute teacher. Interns are required to undergo the same background checks as credentialed teachers.
Sacramento police don't believe De Barraicua has victimized other students, Risley said.
"We think this is an isolated incident," he said.
De Barraicua did not return a telephone call to her home Wednesday.
She is one of several female teachers across the nation accused of having illegal sexual relationships with male students.

A Braxton County middle school teacher is in police custody after allegedly confessing to sexual misconduct with five of her students.
Toni Lynn Woods, 37, of Strange Creek was arrested Wednesday on eight counts of sexual assault.
State Police said several students reported they had been treated or touched inappropriately.
In the criminal compliant filed against Woods, she admitted she had sexual intercourse with three students a total of four times.
She also admitted to performing oral sex on two different juveniles a total of four times.
Braxton County Superintendent Carolyn Long wouldn't comment on the allegations, saying it's a personnel issue. But she said district officials take allegations of abuse seriously.
"This school system acts immediately," Long said, "and follows through any way they can to see that that risk is removed."
Woods was being held in the Central Regional Jail in Sutton on $100,000 bond.
Braxton County Prosecutor William C. Martin said the State Police investigation began when a family member of one of the children complained.
Martin said Woods resigned her job as a sixth grade teacher and permanently surrendered her teaching certificate.

HONEOYE NY — A Honeoye man and his 14-year-old son have filed a notice of claim for unspecified damages against the Honeoye Central School District and a female teacher accused of displaying an inappropriate romantic interest in the teen.
The legal document filed last week accuses Grace M. Wood, 40, a tenured music teacher in the district, of writing unsolicited notes and e-mails to the youth and of inviting him to dine with her and join her at theatrical events and shopping ventures off school grounds.
District Superintendent William Schofield said on Monday that Wood recently returned to her regular teaching schedule after being placed on paid leave for about two months while the district investigated the allegations.
"We've conducted a thorough investigation and found nothing at all wrong," said Schofield. "We see no substance to the claim whatsoever, and we're going to actively dispute it."
As a result of the allegations and the investigation, however, the school recently adopted a written policy on staff-student interactions, Schofield said.
According to the legal claim, Wood began writing the youth notes and sending him unsolicited gifts in December 2004.
Included in the legal claim is an excerpt from a Christmas card Wood allegedly sent the youth alluding to "knowing looks, smiles, late jazz nights ... I love every moment we are together even if all is quiet and we are just in the same place. ... Too much feeling for words. Love. Thanks!"
The claim seeks unspecified monetary damages and charges that the youth, who is still a student in the district, "has suffered emotionally from these incidents, and still feels angry, humiliated, betrayed, embarrassed, and gets physically upset and nauseous when he sees Wood.
Other than stating that a school investigation found the charges without merit and acknowledging that the incident has prompted the district to implement a strict policy against teacher-student fraternization on a romantic level, Schofield declined to comment further on the legal claim.
"I can confirm that this legal issue has been raised, but I can't say anything further because this is a personnel issue," Schofield said. "We did implement a policy prohibiting interaction (between teachers and students) through e-mail or personal contact beyond the classroom."
I find it interesting that, if true, the school had the teacher writing, bascially, love letters to the kid but still tried to say there was "no substance to the claim" and sent her back to work.
I'm pretty certain if the sexes in this case were reversed, and male teacher was writing love notes to a teenaged girl, he'd have been out on his libidinous butt a long time ago.

A guidance counselor at a Manhattan high school is in trouble for having an affair with one of her students, officials said yesterday - the second sex scandal to rock the school this week.
Samantha Solomon, 29, was booted from the High School for Health Professions and Human Services after school bosses learned she was having sex with a teenage boy, according to the Education Department.
But Solomon, who was reassigned to desk duty last month, vehemently denied any wrongdoing and attributed the accusations to rumors gone wild.
"I never had a sexual relationship with a student ever," she told the Daily News last night. "I'm a good person, a nice person. I never signed anything saying I did that."
Solomon is set to meet tomorrow to discuss "disciplinary action" with educrats, who are seeking to fire her, said Education Department spokesman Keith Kalb.
Solomon said she had met with the student, currently a senior, to discuss college possibilities. "She did not do anything that was illegal or immoral," said her mother, Donna Solomon. "She's very pretty and very close with all the students."
The accusations were leveled as students and staffers reeled from a report charging that a shy basketball star got social studies teacher Rhianna Ellis pregnant.
Ellis, 24, delivered a healthy baby in February after a 10-month tryst with an 18-year-old student who graduated in June, officials said.
Students and staffers at the school, on E. 15th St. in Gramercy Park, identified the boy toy as Cesar Pozo, a good athlete who was popular with classmates.
Ellis was chummy with students, showing up at a sweet-16 party last year where she slow-danced with Pozo, and frequently letting kids skip class, students said.
"She was a very friendly person," said senior Brandon Simms, 18.

Hernandez was escorted out of the school the same day and reassigned to desk duty at a regional office, according to the Department of Education. It was not clear why more than a week passed before she turned herself in to cops.
She pleaded not guilty at her night-court arraignment — attended by her mother, father and husband — and was released without bail.
The judge issued an order of protection to keep her away from the boy.

She should be freakin shot......grrrrrrr! And its a pain in the butt to even get into a TEACHING PROGRAM much less to finally get to teach...and to throw it all away on student....that's just crazy. This can actually happen...kids will make up anything these days. A close friend of my mom's (principal for a texas public school) put his foot down on this kid's misbehavior and to punish the principal for doing that...this kid made up all kinds of sexual insinuations...he was suspended without pay and three years later the kid finally confessed to making it up.......those kinda kids should be brutally tortured!
To be fair, any parent is going to want to believe their child. Even if you don't you may give them benefit of doubt. If they turn out to be telling the truth and you haven't backed them it can destroy on your relationship.
A former employee of the South Bend School Corporation has been charged with several counts of sexual assault, battery and misconduct stemming from incidents that took place last year.
Schmeca White, 27, worked as a teacher’s aid at Greene Intermediate School in St. Joseph County.
White faces nine felony charges involving seven children, all special education students. The charges include sexual battery, sexual misconduct and child molesting.
The victims are both male and female ranging in age from 11 to 15-years-old. The alleged inappropriate behavior took place inside a Greene Intermediate classroom in November and December of 2004.
Among other alleged acts too graphic to describe, White allegedly gave a 15-year-old student a lap dance and also asked students to remove some of their clothing.
White is being held in the St. Joseph County Jail on $10,000 bond.

The negative controversey around the issue has been based around the break in trust, not the Charisma of the offender. If you're talking about when people compare the two crimes and try to justify why one is worse than the other, you're probably right, but beyond that, I think the outrage over priests abusing boys has very little to do with breaking the law and very much with the fact that they're destroying a kid's life, and the perception in that case is that when an attractive woman does, the life isn't "that" ruined (I don't know if this is true though, but that's certainly the perception).

HAMMONTON NJ-- A Hammonton High School physical education/health teacher was arrested last Wednesday evening and charged with official misconduct and sexual crimes involving three male students, Atlantic County Prosecutor Jeffrey S. Blitz said.
Traci J. Tapp, 28, was arrested without incident at her home in Leon Court in the Atco section of Waterford Township by officers from the prosecutor's office and the Hammonton Police Department.
Tapp was charged with one count of sexual assault, two counts of aggravated criminal sexual contact and three counts of official misconduct.
She was arraigned before Superior Court Judge Michael Donio. She later posted $25,000 bond and was released, authorities said.
Tapp allegedly sexually fondled one 17-year-old male student whom she invited to her office in the girl's locker room at the high school between January and February 2001, according to the prosecutor's office.
She allegedly invited another 17-year-old boy to her home and both engaged in sexual acts at her direction between June 1 and June 30, 2001, Blitz said.
Tapp invited another 16-year-old male student to her home in 2003 and they engaged in multiple acts of sexual intercourse during one night, according to the prosecutor.
A mother of one of the victims brought the allegations to the attention of school officials in March. School officials then contacted Hammonton police, who began an investigation. The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Crimes Against Children Unit worked on a joint investigation with the Hammonton police. Crimes Against Children investigator Mary Elliot worked with Hammonton police Detective Joel Frederico and Officer Richard Jones under the supervision of Crimes Against Children Unit head Sgt. Alane Spencer, according to the prosecutor.
The Board of Education suspended Tapp with pay in March 2005 when the allegations came to light, Blitz said.
Police Chief Frank Ingemi said last week that the prosecutor's office took its time with the investigation, which lasted nearly six months, but believed that it may not be over.
"If a further investigation is needed, they'll advise us and we'll do what we have to do," Ingemi said. "I believe the whole situation may have to be looked at further. That decision is up to the prosecutor. When you do an investigation you want to make sure that it is complete. Maybe there are some more roads to go down with this."

MONTREAL -- Frustrated by her meagre teacher's salary, a Montreal math teacher says she took advantage of school holidays to work as an escort.
Using the pseudonym Dawn, the 29-year-old, who recently retired from teaching, sold her sexual services by night and taught high school math by day.
For four years, Dawn divided her time between the classroom and hotel rooms, without her colleagues' knowledge.
The woman told Sun Media that the $400 a week she cleared on her teacher's salary wasn't enough.
Dawn, who agreed to share her story provided her identity not be revealed, said she stumbled onto her secret second career while looking through the want ads.
She wasn't satisfied with her job as a teacher. "It wasn't stimulating enough for me," she explained.

"I had clients who paid just to talk to me. They were lonely and wanted company," she said.
With the thousands of dollars she was earning as an escort, Dawn was able to buy things she couldn't afford on her teacher's salary. She went on a shopping binge, eventually buying a car and a brand new condo.
She quit teaching in June after one of her clients learned of her double life through a private detective firm. Afraid the school would eventually discover her secret, Dawn chose to give it all up.
Dawn is convinced that her secret life didn't affect her performance in the classroom. "I was very good and very appreciated," she said. "It didn't change anything because I did my job well.
"Anyways, I didn't talk about what I did in my spare time with my students."
The former teacher, who now works as a waitress in a restaurant, hasn't told her family or partner of her experience.
"Even though I did it, I wouldn't encourage women to work as escorts," she said.

...but children hold a special place in society, and have already been protected by both social norms and laws.
Two 12 year olds, however, aren't gonna get penalized if they sleep with eachother. Whatever sex they may be. That seems to me like society is steadily pushing past the lines and constantly making new norms.
But there's almost no difference between the two. The point of keeping adolescence(sp) from having sex is because their bodies aren't prepared for the act or child-birth. Them having sex with eachother isn't as different as an adult having sex with a minor. The case is even moreso proven through male minors participating in homosexual intercourse. ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A former Catholic school teacher sentenced for having sex with a 16-year-old student was told by a judge Monday that while her behavior "crossed the line" she was a victim, too.
"The 16-year-old in this case is a victim in the statutory sense only," Albany County Judge Stephen Herrick told Sandra Beth Geisel. "He was certainly not victimized by you in any other sense of the word."
Geisel pleaded guilty to one count of third-degree rape on Sept. 27 after admitting to having had sex with the boy in May. She was sentenced to six months in jail but is scheduled for release in several weeks, counting time already served.
Herrick, in handing down his sentence, said the students "manipulated, used and sexually abused" Geisel.
Herrick's words infuriated Albany County District Attorney David Soares, who ripped the judge outside court, saying it was "pretty outrageous to characterize someone who was prosecuted by this office as anything other than a sexual offender."

A South Bay school district is planning to re-examine its policy on hiring volunteers after a parent noticed a school volunteer on the Megan's Law Web site.
The district said the volunteer is also a parent who was helping out with an after-school program at Evergreen Valley High School.
The school board president said they did not know the volunteer was a registered sex offender until a parent brought it to their attention.
"It should not have been unknown to our school site. We have background information by way of an application including fingerprinting; we want to know who we are working with," said J. Manuel Herrera, with the East Side Union High School District.
The school has asked the parent not to volunteer but he is allowed to attend school functions that involve his child.

A former high school social studies teacher on Tuesday reached a plea deal on charges that she had sex with one of her students.
Nicole Barnhart, 35, is accused of having sex with a 16-year-old male student at Ponderosa High School in Parker. She was arrested in March.
Barnhart has accepted the plea offer made by prosecutors and will plead guilty to felony sexual assault on a child and to felony criminal attempt to commit sexual assault on a child.
As part of her plea agreement, Barnhart will be sentenced to two years in prison and have at least 10 years of intense supervised probation. She will also have to register as a sex offender.
Barnhart will officially enter the plea on Jan. 3 in Douglas County and will remain in custody until that time. Sentencing will be about eight weeks after the plea.
The investigation had revealed that Barnhart, who is married, had sexual relations with the boy on more than one occasion, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Department.
Friends of the boy said that he told them he had been having a sexual relationship with the teacher for at least two weeks and was text-messaging her. They said he told them that he thought the teacher was "hot" and he had a crush on her.
Barnhart was hired in the Douglas County School District in 1995 and had been a teacher at Ponderosa High School since August 2002.

A 26-year-old former teacher from Kentucky who reportedly fled that state with a teenage student with whom she had a romantic relationship has been apprehended in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, authorities said.
On Tuesday night, Mexican authorities arrested Angela Comer after finding her at a Nuevo Laredo hotel with the 14-year-old boy and Comer's toddler son.
Mexican officials turned them over to officers with U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the Laredo International Bridge. Comer was taken to a hospital for observation and examination and booked Wednesday morning into the Webb County Jail, said Rene Salinas, spokesman for the FBI in San Antonio.
The 14-year-old was placed in protective custody by the Laredo Police Department, and the 4-year-old was taken into custody by Texas Child Protective Services, the FBI said.
Officers with the Tompkinsville, Ky., Police Department were to return them to Kentucky, Tompkinsville Police Chief Dale Ford said. Comer is charged with custodial interference.
Ford said the teen lives with his grandmother in Tompkinsville, population 3,000, and was last seen about 10:30 p.m. Friday when he arrived home and went to bed. The woman reported the teen missing Saturday morning, Ford said.
"(The grandmother) went to get her purse, and she couldn't find it," Ford said. "She went to his room to see if he knew where it was, and there were pillows under the sheets. He just took his clothes, slipped out, and slipped away."
Comer and her 4-year-old son, who had been staying elsewhere, turned up missing around the same time, Ford said. Comer was scheduled for a hearing Tuesday in Kentucky on a separate charge of custodial interference involving the same teen, Ford said.
He added that Comer also was wanted on a federal warrant for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
The teen was once Comer's student. Comer, also known as Angela Combs, had been an eighth-grade teacher at Monroe County Middle School for about 11/2 years. She resigned in early November, said Kevin Cloyd, principal of the 510-student school.
Ford said investigators believe that Comer, who was going through a divorce, had a romantic relationship with the teen.
"It would appear that way," Ford said. "We're still early in the investigation, but we have a lot of evidence that was on a computer, chat lines and such that will be brought out later."
Investigators also have determined Comer may have stayed at the teen's home without his grandmother knowing.
"She appears to have slipped in and out," Ford said.
Once the teen was linked to Comer, officers issued an alert to area agencies and requested assistance from the FBI. Agents got leads that she and the boy were in Nuevo Laredo, and asked Mexican officials to canvas hotels there for them, leading to their capture.
The FBI in Kentucky will review the case with federal prosecutors to determine what, if any, federal charges should be filed against Comer, according to the FBI.
Observers quickly noted the similarity of this case to the one involving Mary Kay Letourneau. A suburban Seattle elementary school teacher and married mother of four, Letourneau had a sexual relationship with one of her sixth-grade students in the 1990s, and he fathered two more children with her.
Letourneau served 71/2 years in prison, after which the couple married last May.
Other similar cases have been reported around the country.
"There seems to be an epidemic of that," Ford said. "It's bothering the community because we entrust our children to these teachers. That's the biggest kick. If they're not safe at school with a teacher, where are they safe?"
The Long Island teen accusing a Hamptons school psychologist of seducing him — while he was dating the shrink's daughter — enjoyed the alleged sex romps with the older vixen, his pals said yesterday.
The 16-year-old victim, whose name is being withheld due to his status as a rape victim, bragged of the exploits with alleged rapist Diane DeMartini-Scully, 45, friends told the Post.
"The law says he's a victim, but he sure didn't act like one," said confidant Jason James, 18. "He was proud of himself for getting with both the mom and the daughter."
The victim, a neighbor of the shrink, even slept over at DeMartini-Scully's Mattituck home when the couple was suffering marital trouble.
"He would go from one bedroom to the next when he stayed over," said James. "It seemed kind of weird to me, but he was enjoying it."
DeMartini-Scully, who was a shrink at the posh East Hampton Middle School, allegedly seduced the victim while he was dating her 13-year-old daughter.
"The daughter didn't know anything, but the mom knew he was sleeping with her daughter," said Melissa Miller, 25, the victim's friend. "I don't know why anybody would do that to their child. It's sick."
Police say an E.B. Morse Elementary School teacher in Laurens was arrested Friday and charged with two counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor after a parent claimed the woman had sex with one of her 11-year-old students.
Police say the married teacher had at least three sexual encounters with her student since Christmas. In a statement to police, the student said they "had sex on her desk" at one time, and another time, there were about "six other children in the classroom."
Police Chief Robin Morse says that 36-year-old Wendie A. Schweikert of Belton resigned from her teaching position at EB Morse Elementary School around noon. He says she had been an employee of the school district for nine years.
Morse says Schweikert is accused of having sex with the pupil at the school. He says Schweikert had no criminal history and no prior complaints were made against her.

Parents with children from the center were stunned by the allegations yesterday.
The victim was allegedly abused on at least three occasions since January inside the 128th St. facility. The abuse occurred early in the morning when few people were around, sources said.
In the most shocking instance, Bedessie allegedly took him into the bathroom and tried to have sex with him, a law enforcement source said.
Police sources said Bedessie confessed yesterday to Queens sex abuse squad investigators and made a videotaped statement to prosecutors. A native of Guyana, Bedessie had worked for four years at the day care center, officials said.
She faces one count of first-degree rape and six counts of sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.
Charges against a Tampa teacher who had sex with a 14-year-old middle-school student have been dropped in one of the two counties where the incidents occurred.
Debra Lafave, 25, was charged in Marion County with lewd and lascivious battery on a child and lewd and lascivious exhibition for having sex with the now 16-year-old boy in a sport utility vehicle.
As part of a plea deal, she is already serving seven years probation and three years house arrest for similar offenses in Hillsborough County for having sex with him in a classroom and her house.
But the state attorney's office in Marion County dropped the charges there on Tuesday after a judge rejected a similar plea deal that would have allowed Lafave to again avoid going to trial — and to prison. Because the boy's family doesn't want him to testify, the prosecution didn't have enough evidence to present its case.
"I believe my mental illness had a lot to do with my actions," Lafave said in a news conference Tuesday with defense attorney John Fitzgibbons, referring to bipolar disorder. "I offer my deepest apology. I am very remorseful. I want the world to see that bipolar is real."
Asked whether she thought men charged with sex crimes against children were handled more harshly by the legal system than women, Lafave said she didn't.
"I don't think there is a double standard," she said. "I think we should all check the statistics."
Even though the charges have been dropped in Marion County, Lafave will still serve out the terms of the plea deal accepted by the Hillsborough County judge.
Who are she and the prosecutor kidding? They pled it out because her looks would have likely led at least one or two jurors to conclude that kid wanted it.
In today's sexually permissive school environment, just how prevalent is the teacher-student sex problem?
Get ready for a shock. According to a major 2004 study commissioned by the U.S. Department of Education – the most in-depth investigation to date – nearly 10 percent of U.S. public school students have been targeted with unwanted sexual attention by school employees.
Titled "Educator Sexual Misconduct: A Synthesis of Existing Literature," the report says the mistreatment of students ranges from sexual comments to rape. In fact, says the study's author Charol Shakeshaft, professor of educational administration at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y., the scope of the school-sex problem appears to far exceed the clergy-abuse scandal that has recently rocked the Roman Catholic Church.
Comparing the incidence of sexual misconduct in schools with the Catholic Church scandal, Shakeshaft notes that a recent study by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops concluded 10,667 young people were sexually mistreated by priests between 1950 and 2002.
In contrast, she extrapolates from a national survey conducted for the American Association of University Women Educational Foundation in 2000 that roughly 290,000 students experienced some sort of physical sexual abuse by a public school employee between 1991 and 2000.
The figures suggest "the physical sexual abuse of students in schools is likely more than 100 times the abuse by priests," said Shakeshaft, according to Education Week.
Indeed, more than 4.5 million students are subject to sexual misconduct by an employee of a school sometime between kindergarten and 12th grade, says the report.
Recently, there has been a seeming explosion in a special type of teacher sexual abuse – female teachers having sex with underage teenage boys, who as a rule are willing participants in the sex.
"Generally the male doesn't feel victimized," said Steven B. Blum, a consulting psychologist to a sex offender program in Nebraska. "A lot of teenage boys would see that as their lucky day," he told the Los Angeles Times.
Lucky day? What about the next day, and the next year and beyond? Experts say sexually victimized boys experience later difficulty in developing age-appropriate relationships and gravitate toward pornography and one-night stands. They are also more likely as adults to suffer depression, anxiety and drug addiction.
The 16-year-old victim of Margaret De Barraicua, a 30-year-old California teacher who pleaded guilty to four counts of statutory rape, did not consider it his "lucky day."
"I'm not the same boy," the boy said in a letter read in court in Sacramento. "At school I became the center of attention. Everyone knew my name." But the boy was so traumatized, his mother wrote in a letter read in court, that "his hair is falling out."
And the father of a Colorado boy molested by Silvia Johnson – who held drug-alcohol-and-sex parties at her home with teenaged schoolboys to be "cool" – told the court the 40-year-old woman "took away my best friend, my hunting buddy. I can't have him back now. He is gone."
Many theories and factors are advanced to explain the major upsurge in illegal teacher-student sexual relationships, including:

The explosion of hardcore pornography, especially online, has resulted in the exposure of children to graphic sexual images to a far greater degree than at any time in history. But overshadowing virtually all explanations for adult-child sex is the simple fact that the perpetrators – and in the case of female offenders having sex with underage boys, the victims as well – often don't think there is anything wrong with what they are doing.
Essentially, the rationale is: Consensual sex doesn't kill, injure or rob anyone, so where's the victim? Why is "love" (remember Letourneau's book, "Only One Crime, Love") even a crime at all?

A similar thing happened in my sister's subdivision. Someone was running a daycare out of their home and her (my sister's) friend had her son in there. Apparently the older son of the woman that ran the place was home sick (I think it was 14 or something) and had molested one of the girls. I don't remember what was said nor do I know what happened its been awhile since I heard anything about it.
It seems whatever's wrong with those teachers has spread to IL and up by my house now.

For the second time in as many days, a Lake County high school teacher has been accused of molesting a student.
James Lobitz, 36, a 12-year English teacher and the girls track coach at Warren Township High School in Gurnee, engaged in repeated sexual conduct with a 17-year-old student and member of the track team, officials said Wednesday.
Lobitz, of 2752 Hancock Court, Lindenhurst, who also served as a junior varsity girls swim coach for four years, was ordered held on $100,000 bond after being charged with multiple counts of criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual abuse.
On Tuesday, prosecutors charged former Grayslake Community High School teacher and drama coach Jason Glick with aggravated criminal sexual abuse for contact with a 17-year-old girl at that school.
Warren Township High School District 121 released a statement Wednesday saying it is cooperating with authorities.
According to the district, Lobitz on Feb. 14 tendered a letter of resignation to the school board, effective Feb. 28. The board accepted it.
“The board, administration, and the union continue to keep the interests of students, staff and community at the forefront of concern,” the statement read.
District 121 board member Charles Crowley Jr. said he and other officials were limited about what they could say in the wake of the accusations against Lobitz.
“We have a lot of good people at Warren,” Crowley said.
Assistant State’s Attorney Patricia Fix said Lobitz apparently has known the girl in the case, currently a student at Warren’s Almond Road upperclassmen campus, since the beginning of her freshman year.
Fix said the girl told Gurnee police that between Nov. 24 and Jan. 5, she and Lobitz engaged in sex acts at the school, at his house and at her home in Grayslake.
A custodian walked into a darkened, locked classroom at the school Dec. 28, when school was closed for Christmas break, and reportedly found the two inside, Fix said.
The custodian told school officials the girl was pulling up her pants when he came into the room, but Fix said school officials who interviewed Lobitz and the girl reported both claimed nothing had happened between the two.
Gurnee police were called and they re-interviewed the girl later the same day, Fix said, and she told police she and Lobitz had kissed a few times but no other activity had taken place.
Police received permission to search the girl’s computer, and state’s attorney’s investigator Brian Bone uncovered a document in which a long string of electronic messages between Lobitz and the girl had been stored.
Fix said the document had been deleted from the girl’s computer within a few hours after she was first questioned about Lobitz by school officials.
Police also uncovered wireless text messages the two exchanged during school hours and phone records of calls between the two made before and after school.
The girl was interviewed a second time by police, Fix said, and this time gave a detailed account of the relationship, including an incident Jan. 5 when she was inside Lobitz’s home when his wife arrived and the student was forced to flee.
Fix said police served a search warrant on Lobitz’s house Tuesday night and seized his computer and carpeting from the basement.
Defense attorney Douglas Roberts of Waukegan told Associate Judge Valerie Ceckowski the evidence in the case was weak and Lobitz deserved to be released on a signature bond.
“There have been multiple statements that are mutually contradictory in this case,” Roberts said. “This is a very trialable case in which the defendant has cooperated completely.”
Fix asked for a $200,000 bond because some of the charges against Lobitz mandate a prison sentence of at least four years upon conviction.
Ceckowski set a bond that required Lobitz to post $10,000 cash to be released, then ordered him to have no contact with children other than his own and not to use the Internet while his case is pending.
James Lobitz’s wife, Kimberly, is a social studies teacher at Warren High, school officials confirmed. At one time he worked alongside his wife on the girls swim team’s coaching staff.
In 1991, James Lobitz played on the Fiesta Bowl-champion University of Louisville football team and developed an interest in his wife’s passion for swimming.
James Lobitz, who prosecutors said has no prior criminal convictions, is slated to appear in court again May 12.

There's new information in the case of the Virginia high school teacher accused of having sex with two of her special education students.
9News has learned Bonnie Sue Davis was caught inside the home of one of the boys involved in the allegations. They were discovered by the mother of the other teenager. We want to make very clear, no sexual activity was witnessed. There was no drinking nor drugs. Everyone was fully clothed.
Nevertheless, 35-year-old Bonnie Davis was in a darkened bedroom with two of her male students, ages 14 and 15, on a Friday night in February. The mother of the 14-year-old, looking for her son, found him at the 15-year-old's home with their teacher.
That conduct alone is a violation of Spotsylvania County, Virginia school policy. But Davis now faces far more serious allegations: six counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor; two counts of sodomy and one charge of having sex with a 14-year-old. Her attorney says those charges are false.
Police brought the charges last week, more than a month after the parents of one of the boys informed the principal at Courtland High School they had heard one of the boys say the other boy was "going with a teacher."
According to school officials, Principal Michael Bedwell took that to mean the student had a crush on his teacher and did not constitute an allegation of sex. At Courtland, Bedwell interviewed the students and the teacher, all of whom denied any improper behavior.
The parents finally turned to a private investigator, who says he discovered Davis had given the two boys gifts and money. The investigator turned to Spotsylvania County's Commonwealth's Attorney William Neely after he became convinced the allegations were truthful. It was only after Neely became involved one week later that the sheriff's office announced the arrest of Bonnie Sue Davis.
The question is, should sheriff's office have been notified a full month earlier by the principal at Courtland? School officials contend the Principal conducted a proper inquiry into what he perceived as a non-sexual allegation.

TAMPA - Two former Hillsborough County middle school teachers are facing a state inquiry after students said they saw them having sex in a classroom during school hours.
Two students reported watching the Coleman Middle School teachers May 22 through a hole in a paper used to cover a classroom window. One of the teachers later tried to get a student to keep quiet about the incident, school officials said.
In detail, the students described to school officials how they saw Spanish teacher Frances Sepulveda, 30, and coach Bryant Wilburn, 29, having sex inside a locked classroom.
One student said he waited outside for five minutes. When Sepulveda opened the door, Wilburn exited.
Both teachers initially denied the claims of misconduct. But they later admitted having sex in the classroom on one or two occasions during school hours, according to the district report. Both teachers resigned a day before the school year ended on May 25, according to a letter sent home to Coleman parents.
It noted only that the teachers resigned "after they were interviewed about unprofessional conduct on campus."
"No students were directly involved and no students were harmed or endangered in any way," Coleman principal Michael Hoskinson wrote.
Hillsborough schools spokesman Stephen Hegarty said the resignations were "the best results that we could have hoped for."
"Not only is their job in Hillsborough County over with," he said, ''but there's a question about their certification."
Hegarty said school officials are sending information about the incident to state officials, who could look into whether Sepulveda and Wilburn should be allowed to teach in any of Florida's public schools.
Both teachers were in good standing before the incident, Hegarty said. Sepulveda had worked for the school district for more than seven years, and Wilburn had more than five years in the system.
"I'm embarrassed by the incident," Wilburn said when contacted Wednesday. "Everything is not what it seems."
Sepulveda could not be reached for comment. Public records show she was married in February to another man.
Sepulveda tried to keep the students from reporting what they saw, according to the report. It said she pulled a student who reportedly witnessed the act out of her next class.
The student said Sepulveda told her to keep quiet about what she saw. But she asked to call her mother and eventually told the principal.

A former middle school band teacher admitted she had sexual contact with six male students and entered a guilty plea one day before her trial was scheduled to start.
Laura L. Findlay, 32, pleaded guilty Thursday in Saginaw County Circuit Court to 22 counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a person younger than 16.
Under an agreement with prosecutors, she faces at least seven years in prison at sentencing Aug. 17, though the judge could sentence her to up to life in prison. Defense lawyer James F. Piazza said his client might withdraw her plea if the sentence exceeds seven years.
Prosecutors say Findlay had sexual contact with male students from Ricker Middle School in Buena Vista Township over five months in 2004-2005. She had taught at the school for seven years.
Assistant prosecutor James T. Borchard said the students and their parents agreed with the plea deal.
A story out of Texas about an ex-beauty contestant/teacher accused of sex with a male student is raising questions.
Amy McElhenney, 25, is a former Miss Texas contestant who was teaching at a Carrollton, Texas high school. McElhenney was arrested May 25 and charged with having an improper relationship with a student. The Spanish teacher and former Miss Texas contestant faces up to 20 years in prison, if convicted.
McElhenney's arrest was for allegedly having sex with an 18-year-old student and it has raised questions about the age constraints of the state's three-year-old law criminalizing student-teacher sexual relationships.
But some lawmakers say the Hebron High School student's status as a legal adult should exempt McElhenney from the felony charge. State Rep. Helen Giddings, D-Dallas, wrote the Texas law in 2003 that criminalizes sex between educators and students.
But she said she wanted the law to apply only to students 17 and younger — uncomfortable with making sex between two legal, consenting adults a felony.
But other legislators added amendments to Giddings' bill when it reached the floor of the House, making it illegal for educators to have sexual relationships with students of any age.
Rep. Warren Chisum, R-Pampa, proposed dropping the age limit, arguing that teachers wield a power over students that diminishes the pupils' ability to consent.
Neither McElhenney nor her attorney could immediately be reached for comment.
The woman's arrest attracted national media interest — which did not surprise Carrollton police Sgt. Pat Murphy, who cited the sensational elements of the case.
"It's about what I expected for what this case is," Murphy said of the media blitz. "You've got a teacher that was a beauty pageant contestant that is accused of having sex with a student."
But McElhenney's arrest also prompted debates around the nation concerning Texas' law and the criminality of student-teacher relationships when the pupil is a legal adult.
Dallas lawyer Jim Moore said he felt the age issue would make jurors less likely to sentence a defendant to the 20-year prison term for an alleged relationship with a consenting adult. Moore represents a Garland school district teacher accused of having such a relationship in 2005.
Wednesday, July 12, 2006, 6:26pm A teacher in the South Jefferson Central School District was released on his own recognizance following his arraignment Wednesday evening on child sex abuse charges.
State police arrested 37 year old Michael VanWormer of Rodman Tuesday.
VanWormer was charged with third-degree sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.
The arrest came after a 14 year old girl's parents complained to state police of a sexual incident involving VanWormer on July 5.
According to court documents, the alleged incident occurred at the Lakeview fishing access site in the town of Ellisburg.
During his arraignment, the court issued an order of protection to keep VanWormer away from the alleged victim.
Members of the community reacted with shock after hearing of the arrest.
"You can't trust anybody at all no matter who it is," said Katherine Davis, who has grandchildren in the school district.
VanWormer is a science teacher and coach of the girls' cross country team.
One student, 15 year old Devon Bache, had VanWormer as a science teacher. "He's a great guy. I never had a problem with him," said Bache.
The incident took place in the town of Ellisburg, state police said. It did not happen at a residence or on school grounds.
The South Jefferson school board met Wednesday to consider VanWormer's status.
"Obviously, we take any charges or complaints very seriously," said school superintendent Jamie Moesel. "When we are told an employee has been arrested, we go back to our own policies and procedures - and that means an internal investigation."
The board decided against taking any action regarding VanWormer until the district conducts an internal investigation and police complete their criminal probe.
VanWormer's next court appearance was scheduled for August 2 in Ellisburg Town Court.
VanWormer's brother, Gerald, pleaded guilty to sodomy, third degree, in 2001, for an incident involving a 16 year old girl. At the time, Gerald VanWormer was a teacher in the Watertown school district.

LaFave was busted after her young lover's aunt spotted the pair in Ocala and told his mom. LaFave eventually pleaded guilty to lewd and lascivious behavior in the explosive case.
But she managed to dodge prison time after her lawyer told the judge that putting his comely client behind bars would be like "putting a raw piece of meat in with the lions."
When questioned about how she thinks the boy will turn out in the long run, LaFave admits to Lauer: "I think he's going to have a hard time trusting women one day. I'm sure he has to be living with the guilt of quote-unquote ratting me out."

A judge went beyond the recommended sentence and ordered 90 days in jail Wednesday for a former sign-language teacher who had sex with a 16-year-old student.
"I abhor what you have done here," 3rd District Judge Stephen Roth told Melinda Lee DeLuca, 30.
In an agreement with prosecutors, DeLuca last year pleaded guilty to attempted forcible sexual abuse, a third-degree felony.
DeLuca had sex with the boy while she was a teacher at Copper Hills High School in the Jordan School District. She was fired in December 2005.
Although not offering an excuse, defense attorney Earl Xaiz said DeLuca had been taking an anti-seizure medication that can change behavior.

Nashville's 911 call center was contacted on March 15 by a Knoxville police officer, who said Erin McLean's family there believed she had taken an overdose.
Paramedics and a Nashville officer went to the home where McLean was staying and reported that it appeared she had attempted to commit suicide with prescription drugs, police spokeswoman Kristin Mumford said.
Mumford said McLean was taken to a Nashville hospital and later released.

The dark-haired beauty, a one-time director of the Montessori School of New York on East 55th Street, was being held last night after the trial judge set her bail at $3.5 million.
The victim was only 13 when the pe dophile principal - at 29, more than twice his age - sat him on a white porcelain sink in a rear classroom of the school and gave him his first oral sex. "She told me that she loved me and that one day we were going to get mar ried," the victim - now a cop, 24, in Queens - told jurors.

Kelsey Peterson, a 25-year-old sixth-grade math teacher and basketball coach at Lexington Middle School, was arrested in Mexicali, a city on the border with California, Dawson County Attorney Elizabeth Waterman said.
They were found and apprehended by Mexican authorities without incident Friday evening. Peterson was in FBI custody and transported back to the U.S. early Saturday, and the boy was released to relatives in Mexico, Waterman said.
Peterson and the boy fled after police began investigating whether the pair had an intimate relationship, authorities said. Court documents said the boy was last seen Oct. 26.
Waterman said she did not have details on how the pair were found or where Peterson was being held. She said FBI agents were holding her on federal charges.

Makopo, 27, turned herself in early Friday to the Vereeniging South Africa police station, just 15 miles outside of Winfrey’s school.

Debra Lafave, the Florida teacher who pleaded guilty to lewd behavior with a teenage boy, has been arrested for allegedly violating her probation on charges she spoke to an underage female co-worker.
Lafave, 27, allegedly had contact with the minor — a 16-year-old co-worker — at Danny Boys' restaurant in Ruskin, Fla., in violation of her probation, FOX News has learned.
Lafave pleaded guilty in 2005 to lewd and lascivious behavior as part of a plea deal after Florida authorities charged her with having sex with a 14-year-old student.
As part of her probation, Lafave is to abstain from contact with minors under 18 years of age.
The former teacher and her co-worker had allegedly known each other since Oct. 2006, according to the police report.
The Florida Department of Corrections ordered her arrest.
A judge decided Thursday that Debra Lafave, a former middle school teacher and sex offender, violated her probation by having contact with an underage female co-worker at a restaurant where she worked, but it wasn't sufficient enough to put her back into jail.
Lafave — who has reverted to her maiden name, Debra Beasley — will continue on her stringent probation program or community control, Judge J. Rogers Padgett of the 13th Judicial Circuit in Florida ruled Thursday.
At Thursday's hearing, Beasley answered questions about her conduct before the court. She had previously taken two polygraph tests about the incidents.
According to a Department of Corrections report, Beasley discussed her personal life and other subjects with the co-worker. "I don't discuss my personal life," told the court on Thursday.
Beasley, 27, is serving three years of house arrest and seven years of probation after pleading guilty to having sex with the 14-year-old boy in a classroom and her home in June 2004.
When asked about whether she had ever touched her co-worker, Beasley acknowledged "innocent" handshakes and hugs.
Probation records show Beasley worked for two years at a Tampa-area restaurant until last year, when her probation officer ordered her to quit. She now works as a receptionist at her mother's barbershop.
Other terms of her probation include sex offender treatment, random drug testing and 200 hours of community service, which she has completed.
Lafave pleaded guilty to two counts of lewd and lascivious battery in November 2005. She could have faced up to 15 years in prison for a probation violation.

A former middle school teacher was sent to prison for six years Tuesday for having sexual encounters with five teenage boys.
Authorities said Allenna Ward, 24, met 14- and 15-year-old boys at the school where she taught as well as at a motel, a park and behind a restaurant. Police began investigating last year after school officials found a note believed to have been written by Ward to one of the boys. Some of the victims were students at Bell Street Middle School in Clinton, where Ward taught. She was fired about a year ago.
Ward pleaded guilty in September to three counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor and three lewd acts on a minor.
Forensic psychiatrist Donna Schwartz-Watts said Ward is not a pedophile, but rather a childlike victim suffering from personality disorders and a repressed childhood. Schwartz-Watts said the minister's daughter lived a sheltered life but really was a "free spirit" who never got a chance to break away from her family.
A Bentonville High School math teacher faces two charges after being arrested in connection with inappropriate contact with students. Melissa G. Monroe, 32 of Bella Vista, was arrested Tuesday for sexual assault in the second degree and knowingly furnishing alcohol to a minor.
Bentonville police began investigating after receiving information that Monroe had been involved in a sexual relationship with a male student, a police news release states.
Monroe is in the Benton County Jail awaiting a bond and probable-cause hearing.
A Granby High School teacher accused of sending improper photos of herself to students via cell phone has been arrested. Natasha L. Sizow, 24, of Alton Drive in Virginia Beach, was charged with two counts each of indecent liberties and use of a communications device to facilitate crimes against children, according to police and court records. She turned herself in Tuesday night, said Officer Chris Amos, police spokesman.
Schools spokesman Vincent Rhodes said Sizow was a first-year social studies teacher and the girls’ swimming coach at Granby. She was accused of sending photos of herself “in various stages of undress,” said Sgt. Jim Robertson, a police spokesman. The students involved were a male and a female, both age 17, according to Amanda Howie of the commonwealth’s attorney’s office.
The case came to light two weeks ago, when police sought a warrant to search Sizow’s cell phone for electronic data. A detective’s affidavit said that a school resource officer learned about the allegations and reported them.
Sizow initially was put on paid leave. As a result of the charges, that was being changed to leave without pay, Rhodes said Wednesday.
A teacher's aide quit her job on Monday after police discovered teenage students in her hotel room with alcohol and drugs. Abbiejane Swogger, 34, who resigned from the Highlands School District in Natrona Heights, Pa., faces possible criminal charges and corruption of minors charges.
"I did not have any sex with anybody," said Swogger, a former exotic dancer.
Police found condom wrappers, crack-cocaine, empty beer cans and alcohol in Swogger's hotel room last week. Swogger did not show up to work on Thursday or Friday.

The relationship became known when she went to a school basketball game while intoxicated and announced the affair to nearby students and spectators. Gravlin blames her actions on depression, alcohol, prescription drugs and pressure from the victim.
Gravlin will be sentenced May 5. She also faces 10 years of probation. As a felon, Gravlin will have to surrender her New York state teaching license.

HILLSBORO — A former substitute teacher in the Dunklin School District in Jefferson County will be sentenced next month after pleading guilty of having sex with a 14-year-old student.
Teresa Engelbach, 22, of Pevely, pleaded guilty last week to one felony count of second-degree statutory rape and one misdemeanor count of sexual misconduct. She could get up to 7 years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000 on the rape charge, and up to 6 months in prison and a fine of up to $500 on the sexual misconduct charge.
Jefferson County Circuit Judge M. Edward Williams set sentencing for April 15.
The charges against Engelbach were filed last March after the student, then in the eighth grade, reported to a teacher that he had had sex with Engelbach, a substitute teacher at Senn-Thomas Middle School in Herculaneum. The teacher told school administrators, who called police.
The incidents took place last year between Feb. 1 and March 13 in several areas of Jefferson County and did not involve other students, police said.
Engelbach had a substitute teaching certificate from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, which requires a fingerprint background check through the Missouri Highway Patrol and FBI. Those checks came back clear, Dunklin Superintendent Stan Stratton has said.
Stratton said Wednesday that Engelbach had not taught in the district since she was charged.
Her attorney, Daris Almond Jr., was unavailable Wednesday for comment.
Stratton said Engelbach also formerly taught at the district's high school and elementary school. She began working for the district, which has 1,350 students, in September 2006.
Jim Morris, a spokesman for the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, said Engelbach did not renew her substitute teaching certificate for the 2007-2008 school year.

I certainly said nothing that could be honestly misinterpreted as endorsing this behavior, or as pedophelia, as you maliciously allege. I've clearly condemned this as sick behavior repeatedly over the years. Even in the cases of students who are 18 or older, these are teachers trusted to positions of authority, and whether the students in question are 18 or not, that is an abuse of their position as teachers.

That's reading a lot into what I actually said. I said it's self-destructive to the female teachers. And I've previously said on a number of occasions (4-24-2006 and 9-7-2004) that however fun this might sound for a 14 or 15-year-old kid to have sex with a beautiful older woman teacher, it's not that easy, and there are in pretty much every case I've read, emotional strings for these teenage boys that screw them up for years afterwards. I previously gave the example of the kid who had an affair --and children-- with Mary Kay Letorneau.
There's an example of a kid earlier in this topic, who had sex with a female teacher where she made it out to be more than sex, and it wasn't, and screwed him up, and he reported her years later when he became a police officer.

But, in all seriousness, I have to defend WB on this "he's a pedo" charge.
When WB wrote about these teachers, I took it to mean simply that he couldn't understand why the teachers would do something this stupid. I don't see that as "sympathy". Also, let's face it: looking at some of these teachers, no straight man can deny that he would have WANTED to have sex with a woman who looked like that when he was a teenager.
It should be also noted that having sex (or wanting to have sex) with an underaged (but not legal) teenager is not, per se, pedophilia. Pedophilia involves sexual fantasies about prepubescent children. The worst you can say about some of the girls WB posts pics of is that they look underaged but definitely post-adolesent.

A 25-year-old Long Island teacher was busted for having sex with a 16-year-old student in a late-night rendezvous in their high school parking lot, cops said Thursday.
Heather Kennedy, who teaches math at Wantagh High School, was released on $35,000 bond after she was arraigned in a Hempstead courtroom on charges of rape and endangering the welfare of a child.
Nassau County cops said Kennedy seduced the teen after he picked her up March 18 at her grandmother's Massapequa home, where she lives, and went cruising for several hours. Manhattan — The teacher at the center of the controversy, 31 year-old Katherine Harder, taught at Manhattan High and at K-State over the past few years.
Michele Jones, communications coordinator for USD 383, said Harder was a good teacher.
"Ms. Harder was a language arts teacher at Manhattan High School. She had worked for us for about three years, and she resigned from employment this morning," Jones said.
Harder and the boy drove down this road to a secluded area outside of Manhattan.

Katherine Harder was released today from jail on a $3,000 bond. She faces five to 13 months in jail if she's convicted.
Police say the motives of a teacher accused of taking three youngsters to motels to engage in sex in a nearby town aren't known. Donna Lou Sanders, 46, of Magnolia, was released on $100,000 bond Friday. She is charged with 12 counts of permitting abuse of a minor, and 10 counts of rape. Columbia County deputy prosecutor David Butler said she is being treated at a private mental health facility.
Chief Robert Gorum said Sanders told investigators on Wednesday, the day she was arrested, that she committed all of the crimes of which she is being accused.
Sanders, who was a special education teacher at Magnolia Junior High School, resigned from that job on Wednesday with a letter that consisted of a single sentence: "Due to catastrophic events that have taken place within my family, I do hereby resign as a teacher in the Magnolia School District."
Some details of the allegations against Sanders emerged Friday when authorities released a probable-cause affidavit written by Detective Todd Dew in support of the charges against Sanders. On the version provided to reporters, the names of the juveniles involved were blacked out, and it was not known if any were students in Sanders' classes.
According to the affidavit, Magnolia Junior High principal Chris Hurley said he had spoken with two girls — one 12 years old, the other 13 — and a 15-year-old male who was also involved. A 15-year-old male student at The Renaissance School in Warren Township told police that he had sex with Sheila Vazquez during a "lunch" outing during school hours, police said.
The incident is alleged to have happened on May 1 following several months of conversation that included sexual innuendo, the student told police.
According to a police report, the student indicated that the conversations began innocently in February when he told her that he was bored in school.
The student told police that Vazquez responded that she had something that would keep him busy.
As the conversations continued over the ensuing months, according to the student, he and Vazquez met in a classroom after school on several occasions to kiss and embrace.
The student told police that Vazquez arranged to take him to lunch during school because he was working hard in class.
Police said the student told them that he and Vazquez went to her home and had sex during the encounter and that she brought him back to school afterward.

A 22-year-old female high school teacher was arrested yesterday for having sex with a 15-year-old boy as part of a three-on-one sex romp, authorities said. Janmattie Singh, an English teacher at Richmond Hill HS in Queens, was slapped with statutory rape and other charges stemming from the Jan. 23 encounter with the boy and his two 18-year-old relatives, officials said.
She pleaded not guilty in Brooklyn Criminal Court and was released on bail, according to her lawyer, Kumar Paturi.
Singh had arranged the after-school affair by phone with one of the 18-year-old boys - a former student of hers at Richmond Hill, according to a spokeswoman for the Office of the Special Commissioner of Investigation. The rendezvous occurred at a Brooklyn apartment of one of the boys.
Investigators later recorded phone conversations between Singh and the boys during which she admitted having extracurricular coitus with the 15-year-old, a law-enforcement official said. GARDEN CITY, N.Y. — A former New York teacher who admitted having sex with a 16-year-old boy has been arrested on rape and other charges after prosecutors say she continued the liaisons in violation of a court order.
Heather Kennedy, a former Wantagh high school teacher, was arrested late Monday. She is charged with third-degree rape, committing a criminal sexual act , criminal contempt and endangering the welfare of a minor.
The 25-year-old was first arrested in March. She pleaded guilty to sexual misconduct and was awaiting an August sentencing.
Prosecutors got a tip Kennedy was still meeting with the boy and began watching her. The victim also admitted having sex with Kennedy five times since her guilty plea.
Kennedy's lawyer did not immediately return a call for comment.

A 27-year-old woman has been arrested on charges of distributing harmful material to a minor after a 14-year-old's parents found a topless photo of her on his cell phone.
Victoria Ann Chacon, a former middle school teacher, allegedly met the boy at their church, where she was a Sunday school teacher. Authorities at Somerset Independent School District said they found no evidence of any inappropriate relationships with students; the 14-year-old attended school elsewhere.
The boy's parents called police in March after finding racy letters in which Chacon professed her love. The boy initially refused to give a statement about the relationship, the arrest warrant says.
Several months later, the parents found a cell phone with a topless photo of Chacon. The phone was owned by Chacon and the two had been calling on another, according to court documents.
The woman was arrested Tuesday. Jail records had no attorney listed for her.
An elementary school teacher accused of having sex with a teenage boy pleaded not guilty to rape charges Friday. Christine A. McCallum, 29, of Rockland, is accused of having multiple sexual encounters with the boy that began when he was 13 years old. The alleged incidents occurred in Abington and Rockland.
McCallum was released on $10,000 bond after she pleaded not guilty to three counts of rape at Brockton District Court for the incidents in Abington. She also pleaded not guilty later Friday in Hingham District Court on four additional counts for the alleged rapes in Rockland.
The married fifth-grade teacher has been fired from her job at Woodsdale Elementary School in Abington, Superintendent Peter G. Schafer said Friday.
Rockland police Chief John Llewellyn said his officers and Abington police arrested McCallum at her home Thursday night.
Plymouth District Attorney Tim Cruz said McCallum was working as a teacher's aide and tutoring the boy's younger brother when the relationship began. Cruz said the father of the boy, now 16, went to authorities recently after he found some correspondence between his son and McCallum.
In court, Assistant District Attorney Michael Scott said McCallum had become like a surrogate mother to the boy, who lives in Abington and was being raised by a single father. He said the relationship progressed to kissing and sex after McCallum plied the boy with alcohol.
McCallum's attorney, Frederick McDermott, said there was no evidence his client ever had sex with the teen. He said she acted as the boy's surrogate mother, but that relationship ended in July 2007 after she caught the boy stealing liquor from her home.
McCallum was ordered to stay away from the boy, his family, and all children under 16. She also must wear a tracking device and surrender her passport.
A telephone message left at a number for a Christine A. McCallum in Rockland was not immediately returned Friday.
Until I know what "correspondence" is, I don't have the heart to assume this woman actually committed a crime. Reminds me of all the priests who's reputations were ruined but were never actually proven to have molested anyone.
RED CREEK, N.Y. -- A coach at Red Creek Middle School has resigned after being accused of sexually abusing a student. Kelly Powers has been charged with sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child after she turned herself in to the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office. According to the school district, Powers worked as an office monitor and coached several girls athletic teams. Investigators say the victim, who was under the age of 14, was a family friend of Powers. They say the sexual abuse occurred several times and in a couple different locations.
"According to our investigation, this abuse began in October of 2008 and continued up until approximately a week and a half ago. There were incidents that occurred at the victim's residence in Cayuga County and incidents that occurred at Red Creek School on school property, as well as on a school bus,” said Joseph Weeks, Cayuga County Sheriff's Detective.
Powers was charged in Cayuga County, where she lives, and could face additional charges in Wayne County, which is where the school is located.
The district says she has resigned from her job at the school.
NEW YORK — Police say an Ohio fourth grade teacher charged with prostitution skipped class after using a school computer to arrange an afternoon tryst at a motel.
Logan County Sheriff's officials say 35-year-old Amber Carter was arrested Tuesday in a motel parking lot in Bellefontaine in central Ohio.
Police say Carter is charged with misdemeanor prostitution and a felony count of unauthorized use of property, regarding the computer.
Bellefontaine City Schools Superintendent Larry Anderson says school officials are shocked. He says Carter has worked for the district for 13 years and has never received a reprimand.
She has been placed on administrative leave.
A woman answering a phone listing for Amber Carter in Bellefontaine hung up on a call seeking comment Wednesday.
A Nassau County teacher convicted of having a protracted affair with a teenage student was busted again yesterday for sending him love letters from the slammer, police said.
Heather Kennedy sent the three missives from Nassau County Correctional Center last summer after she pleaded guilty to raping the 16-year-old victim in March 2008, officials said. She was barred from communicating with him under a court order.
The former Wantagh HS math teacher was sentenced in the original case on Friday to time-served.
In this incident, she was charged with three counts of second-degree criminal contempt, one for each letter she sent the boy, and released on $15,000 bail, authorities said.

42 year old teacher Kylene Nelson recorded a blood alcohol level of 0.26 and later ran from the school to a nearby community center where she was found passed out by a pool.
students took pictures and video of the drunk teacher, although were ordered by the school to delete the footage. One student didn’t, and naturally turned to the local television station to share what she had. The video shows among other things, the teacher grabbing students and demanding they dance, in between falling over.
CHANDLER, Ariz. — An 18-year-old high school student caught with his 48-year-old math teacher in her bedroom was stabbed to death by her boyfriend, who was himself a former student of hers, police said Tuesday. Chandler police said 20-year-old Sixto Balbuena told them he never meant to kill Samuel Valdivia. He allegedly told police "the blade went in like going into butter" and that he just wanted to show Valdivia how much he hurt him by sleeping with Tamara Hofmann.
Balbuena, a Navy sailor on leave from California, was arrested on a charge of second-degree murder after police found him covered in blood and told them about the killing. He remained jailed in lieu of $100,000 bond on Tuesday and did not yet have a lawyer.
Balbuena found his girlfriend naked and Valdivia in his boxer shorts in the woman's bedroom around 2:40 a.m. Friday, according to police reports and court documents.
Balbuena told police that Valdivia apologized to him before Balbuena began kicking, punching and throwing things at him, according to a police probable cause statement.
Police said Balbuena told them he "wanted to teach the victim a lesson," and stabbed him in the lower side with a kitchen knife, according to the court document. Valdivia later died at a hospital.
STOCKTON, Calif. — A woman kidnapped, raped and murdered an 8-year-old girl and stuffed her body in a suitcase that was dumped in a pond just a few miles from home, prosecutors alleged Tuesday.
Melissa Huckaby, 28, was charged with murdering her daughter's playmate, Sandra Cantu, in a gruesome crime that has shocked and terrified residents of Tracy, a Northern California city of about 78,000, 60 miles east of San Francisco.
Huckaby, who volunteered as a Sunday school teacher at her grandfather's Clover Road Baptist Church in Tracy, appeared in a San Joaquin County courtroom for her arraignment in a red jumpsuit and shackles. She trembled and cried as a judge read the charge: one count of murder with the special circumstances of rape with a foreign object, lewd or lascivious conduct with a child under 14
A pervy social studies teacher has been busted for repeatedly molesting a 14-year-old student in a Queens middle school, officials said. Melissa Weber, 27, had sex with the teenage victim on seven different occasions in her second floor classroom at MS/IS 8 in Jamaica, authorities said
"Don't tell anyone," the boy's homeroom teacher allegedly told the him at one point. "I could get arrested and I could lose my teaching license."
The string of trysts took place just after school hours over a one-month period beginning April 13, officials said.
The boy's mom, a member of the PTA, caught onto the illicit rendezvous after she being told by several people that a teacher at the school was engaging in an inappropriate relationship with her son.
After getting the teacher's phone number, she checked her son's cell phone and allegedly found hundreds of calls and text messages between Weber and the teen.
One of the last texts allegedly said, "Erase your phone."
Weber, of West Babylon, is awaiting arraignment on charges of statutory rape, sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child, and faces up to seven years in prison if convicted.
Authorities say 42-year-old Ranee Proper had sex with boys ages 16 and 17. They originally charged her with five counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct with a student.
In a deal, Proper pleaded guilty last month to second-degree criminal sexual conduct.
On Wednesday, Oakland County Circuit Judge Edward Sosnick sentenced her to five years' probation, the first nine months of it in jail.
He also ordered her to get sex offender treatment and not to have unsupervised contact with minors other than relatives.
Proper started working at the school in 2004 and resigned last June during an investigation.
A female teacher yesterday pleaded guilty to raping a male student in their Queens school.
Melissa Weber, 28, will have to serve 10 years of probation and spend 20 years as a registered sex offender under the deal, which spares her 14-year- old victim from having to testify.
"She said she was wrong," said Donald Vogelman, her lawyer.
Weber was charged in May with having sex with the boy on seven occasions in MS/IS 8 in Jamaica and behaving inappropriately with him on seven other occasions.
The child's mother found out when she discovered hundreds of phone calls and text messages on her son's phone.
Weber will have to give up her teaching license and is barred from reapplying.
OWEGO, N.Y. (AP) - A 23-year-old student teacher is facing charges she had sex with a 15-year-old girl.
Amy Miller of Vestal was being held Tuesday in the Tioga County Jail on $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond. Miller was a graduate student in special education at Binghamton University's teacher education program and had taught at Union-Endicott High School and Owego Free Academy.
Police say the victim was 1 of Miller's students but they did not say which school she attended.
Miller is charged with third-degree committing a criminal sexual act and child endangerment.
A spokeswoman says Miller has been suspended by Binghamton University and removed from all coursework and related teaching assignments.
State police don't know if she has a lawyer.

BARTOW, Fla. -- A Central Florida teacher has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for having sex with four teenage boys.
A Polk County jury in August had found 33-year-old Danielle Jones guilty of five counts of lewd battery and three counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor. She was sentenced Tuesday.
Prosecutors said the boys were 14 to 16 years old when they had sex with the middle school science teacher. Two of them were her former students.

The day after the Daily News reported that two James Madison High School language teachers were busted "undressed" in an empty classroom, sources said a third educator is being investigated for getting too personal with a student.
Social studies instructor Allison Musacchio is under investigation for having an inappropriate relationship with a male student, sources said.
It is the second scandal in as many days to rock the Midwood school where New York Sen. Chuck Schumer and Major League ballplayer Frank Torre once walked the halls.
School sources said they learned of Musacchio's alleged antics in March, after a female James Madison student saw her ex-boyfriend's phone number on the tenured teacher's cell phone. Officials found more than 200 texts and calls between the teacher and the male pupil and yanked her from the classroom, sources said. They said the amount of contact was inappropriate.
Musacchio, 31, was also investigated for having a fling with a former student but the probe was dropped because the teen was of legal age and no longer at the school, school sources said.
Attempts to reach Musacchio at her home were unsuccessful Wednesday, but she has told a neighbor the allegations were untrue.
"She said, 'Absolutely not,'" the neighbor said. "She said, 'Are you crazy? With my Greek background, I would never do something like that. I have morals and respect.'"
A group of immigrant high-school students got a senior prom that could happen only in America. When the yacht "Fantasy" set sail for a three-hour cruise around Manhattan last June, the liquor started to flow and bartenders served drink after drink to the chaperones -- including some 15 teachers and the principal of International HS at Lafayette, a Brooklyn public school.
As it neared midnight, several attractive young faculty members, loosened by booze, boogied with the kids.
Finally, a buxom chemistry teacher, 25, wrapped herself around a boy as they danced slowly. They locked lips.
"Look at that!" partiers murmured and pointed.
"They were making out," said a student who witnessed the shocking scene.
It wasn't only a spectacle on the upper-deck dance floor, students told The Post. A large TV screen projected the action on the lower level, as stunned classmates, teachers and principal Michael Soet watched.
But, so far, only the dirty-dancing teacher, Lindsay Dunaj, has faced the music. She quit in December amid an ongoing probe by special schools investigator Richard Condon. She did not return calls and e-mails for comment.
Dunaj, who grew up in Wilbraham, Mass., was yanked from the classroom in September after Condon's agents interviewed another student, Dmitry Prokofyev, a soccer star and A student whose e-mail chats with Dunaj were discovered by other students and turned in to the principal, The Post learned.
Prokofyev, who declined to comment, told investigators he had a romantic relationship with Dunaj, his chemistry teacher, months before the prom, when he was 18 -- a year over New York's legal age of consent, a source confirmed.
The boozing that set the probe in motion is "also under investigation" by the city Department of Education, said spokeswoman Margie Feinberg. Alcoholic drinks are forbidden at any school-sponsored event or trip attended by minors, she said.
Feinberg could not say when the DOE learned about the chaperone carousing or whether parents were informed or explain why the probe is still not complete seven months after the prom.
She also could not say whether school or DOE funds paid for the boozing.
Students said the bartenders were strict about not serving kids -- though some kids tried to pass as adults and order drinks. Some snuck sips from teachers.
Principal Soet remains at the helm of the school, which serves 300 recent immigrants to New York City who speak little or no English when they enroll.
The school is one of 10 in the city supported by the Internationals Network for Public Schools, a nonprofit whose motto is "Opening doors to the American dream."
Officials at the network did not return calls, and Soet declined to discuss the prom.
That's not just one teacher exhibiting bad judgement, but a whole group of teachers. (Although the other teachers' indiscretion was limited to drinking and dancing with students.)

BARTOW, Fla. -- A Central Florida teacher has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for having sex with four teenage boys.
A Polk County jury in August had found 33-year-old Danielle Jones guilty of five counts of lewd battery and three counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor. She was sentenced Tuesday.
Prosecutors said the boys were 14 to 16 years old when they had sex with the middle school science teacher. Two of them were her former students.
Canandaigua, N.Y. - A Canandaigua City School District teacher accused of having an inappropriate relationship with students has been arrested.
Marla Gurecki-Haskins, 36, is charged with official misconduct and two counts endangering welfare of a child. She's also charged with disemminating indecent material to a minor, a felony. According to court paperwork, she's accused of "engaging in text messaging of a sexual nature that encouraged a sexual relationship between the defendant and two 16 year old male students."
She's also accused of performing oral sex on a 17-year-old male student in her classroom during school hours.
Gurecki-Haskins was arraigned on the charges this morning. She pleaded not guilty and was released on her own recognizance.
She has been a certified special education teacher since 1996.
Police say their investigation is not over. They said they have 2,400 to 2,500 pages of material, most of it emails and text messages.

Marla Gurecki-Haskins, former Canandaigua Academy special education teacher, was taken to the Ontario County Jail this morning following sentencing in Canandaigua City Court.
Gurecki-Haskins took a plea in September, resulting in 45 days in jail plus three years' probation in regard to two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and one charge of official misconduct. Judge Stephen Aronson added some stipulations to the penalties, including payment of reparations in the amount of $1,995 to the victim's family for attorney fees and an order of protection from the victim.
"It's obvious the victim is scarred," Aronson said.
"The teacher was reassigned to administrative duty off-campus as soon as we learned of the incident," CPS spokesman Michael Vaughn said Thursday. He said CPS is investigating the incident."
Looks like the Teacher's Union strikes again.

NO TEACHER LEFT BEHIND: Powerful Unions Protect Bad Teachers, But Do Nothing to Guarantee Our Kids' Education

For two years, Thomas Sheldon made good money doing nothing. In May 2008, school officials yanked him from his fourth-grade classroom, desspite 18 years on the job. He had been accused of making abusive comments to his students and co-workers. He'd also been charged with harassing a colleague, contacting her in defiance of a school district order. Sheldon denied the charges and fought the school's attempts to fire him.
But in Los Angeles, and all across America, firing a teacher is about as easy as passing a kidney stone. So, as his case wound through the torturous administrative review process, Sheldon was ordered to "work" from home --which meant watching TV, downloading music and lifting weights.
Meanwhile he collected his full annual salary of $75,024, thanks to his powerful union. Nice work if you can get it.
And Sheldon has plenty of company. As oif last year, the Los Angeles Unified School district was paying full salaries to some 160 teachers who had been pulled from the classrooms while accusations of misconduct were being resolved.
Sheldon's free ride finally ended in June when he opted not to appeal the decision to fire him.
But the absurd situation in Los Angeles pales in comparison to the madness in New York Citys "rubber rooms". That's the nickname for the offices where about 650 of the city's public school employees were sitting aroud day after day doing, well, whatever they felt like. Reading books, solving crossword puzzles, surfing the web. Most were teachers who had been removed from classrooms for alleged misconduct, including sexual relationships with students, failure to grade homework or follow the curriculum, and outright incompetence. Like Los Angeles, New York City was unable to fire them because of union protections. All these idle teachers, meanwhile, drew full salaries and benefits --costing New York $30 million last year alone-- for doing nothing.
Well, not quite nothing. Alan Rosenfeld, a Queens teacher who wass accused in 2002 of making lewd comments to at least 6 eighth grade girls ("You have a sexy body," he allegedly told one). A panel found Rosenfeld guilty of one charge, and school officials didn't want him back in the classroom. But thanks to union protections, he couldn't be fired. So Rosenfeld was sent to a rubber room, where he continued to collect not just his $100,000 salary, but also, according the New York Post, the income he made running a law practice and real estate business --for eight years.
How widespread is the problem?
A May 2008 survey by the nonpartisan Education Sector came up with this shocking finding: Nearly half the 1,000 teachers contacted said they personally know of a teacher "who is ineffective asnd should not be in the classroom". Yet thanks to the unions, and politicians who have rewarded their generous donations, teachers enjoy job protection that would be laughed out of the private sector.
"Nobody, with the possible exception of federal judges, deserves lifetime or guaranteed employment," says Chester Finn, a longtime education reformer with Stanford University's Hoover Institution. Finn says such protections are bad for the taxpayers who pay for long legal battles against the likes of Thomas Sheldon. They're bad for our students. And they're bad for America. In a 2006 assessment of 15-year-old students in 30 industrialized countries, America placed 25th in math and 21st in science.
Here's an even bigger point. While we need to get rid of sleaze balls as fast as possible, it's just as important to dump teachers who are plain incompetent. And there are plenty. Yet only about 2 percent of teachers are either fired or don't get their contracts renewed because of poor performance every year.
Worse, that figure is often lower among teachers within the magical force ffield of tenure. From Hawaii to Utah to Deleware --states where less than half of fourth-graders are proficient at at reading or math-- the average district didn't dump a single tenured teacher in the 2007/2008 school year. In Minneapolis, some 75 teachers were canned between 2002/2003 and 2006/2007, a ratio of 0.5 percent of the school system's tenured teachers per year. In Oklahoma, only one teacher has been fired since 2003.
The tenure system was created to prevent discrimination, and to guarantee teachers due process. But other laws also make dismissals on the basis of gender or race illegal. And in practice, tenure has become a way for rotten apples to cling to their jobs. As Michelle Rhee, the bold new schools chief trying to clean up Washington D.C.'s horrendous public school system puts it: "Tenure is the holy grail of teacher unions but has no educational value for kids. It benefits only adults."
It's painfully obvious that the unions need a shake-up. And politicians in both parties need to be more willing to challenge the tenure system, and to reward high-performing teachers regardless of seniority. Change won't come easy given [teacher unions'] massive political spending: In California alone, the biggest teacher union spent $212 million over the past decade. Still, some states are taking action, including Arizona, which last year abolisshed its teacher seniority system.
Washington D.C.'s new schools chief dismissed more than 200 employees --including a group of underperformers and several teachers she alleged had hit kids or missed up to 78 days of school --but only becaause a budget crunch gave her the power to force layoffs.
There is one more piece of good news. Last April, New York City and its teachers union finally decised to shut down those rubber rooms. And Los Angeles is considering similar action. But teachers in disciplinary limbo will still get paid in full. Now they'll just be forced to perform administrative tasks while they await their fate. It's a small step for New York. But to fix our schools, America still needs to make a giant leap.
A great article citing examples of grossly negligent teachers, some of them sexual predators, who are protected by teacher unions and allowed to continue pulling down their full salaries, often doing nothing, long after they would have been fired in any private sector job.
What looked like a scene from a porn flick was really a medical emergency, the naughty teachers at Brooklyn's "Horndog High" told investigators.
James Madison High School teacher Alini Brito said she was getting an insulin shot from co-worker Cindy Mauro when a janitor saw her naked from the waist up with another nude teacher kneeling between her legs.
Brito's excuse was part of testimony released Friday from a state arbitrator's report on the scandal. The 30-year-old Spanish teacher was fired after city officials received the report on Dec. 27.
The "Horndog High" saga began Nov. 20, 2009, while students were attending a sing-and-dance competition in the auditorium. While witnesses said they saw a romantic tryst, the teachers tried to explain all the evidence away as a misunderstanding.
Brito, a diabetic, told investigators she started feeling ill and asked her French teacher colleague to "check her blood sugar," according to the report.
"Let's go upstairs," Mauro said, according to the report. "I have sugar and candy in my room."
By the time they got to Mauro's classroom on the third floor, Brito said her "knees got weak," so she lay down on the floor.
Brito took off her sweater and Mauro placed it under her colleague's head, Brito said in the report, then Mauro put a chair under Brito's legs "to aid her circulation."
Brito said Mauro was kneeling next to her with the lights off when the janitor popped in. Mauro was fully clothed, Brito told investigators.
The janitor, who said he saw two topless women rolling around on the floor, summoned school safety officer Ruth Reyes.
She described what she saw in Room 337 quite differently.
"[Brito] was naked on the floor... and I saw the blond between her legs, and when I opened the door, she looked up and told me to shut the door," Reyes told investigators.
By the time Assistant Principal Jodie Cohen got to the room minutes later, she saw Brito "leaning against the teacher's desk... and she seemed to be, like, zippering her boot and finishing buttoning her shirt."
The testimony was enough for state arbitrator Mary Crangle to rule it was "more likely than not" the teachers were in the middle of "a sexual encounter."
Both teachers were reassigned after the 2009 scandal. Mauro is still awaiting disciplinary action.

Faulting what it said was the prosecution's belated disclosure and nondisclosure of impeachment material to the defense, a Manhattan appeals court has reversed the conviction of a former high school principal for bribing a witness who testified at her trial for allegedly having sex with students.
However, the Appellate Division, First Department, in People v. Sinha, 4146-4146A, upheld the conviction of Lina Sinha on other charges against her, including sodomy in the second and third degree.
A jury found Ms. Sinha, a former principal of Montessori School of New York on East 55th Street, guilty of having sex with a 13-year-old student when she was about 30 years old. Ms. Sinha allegedly had sex with a second student, but the jury could not reach a verdict on that charge.
The jury also found that Ms. Sinha had tried to persuade a former student, identified as John Smith, to testify that he had not had sex with her by promising him $400 and sneakers.
Ms. Sinha filed a motion to vacate her conviction, but that was denied by the trial judge, Acting Supreme Court Justice Carol Berkman (See Profile). Ms. Sinha then appealed that denial and her underlying conviction to the First Department.
The appellate court concluded that she should have a new trial only on the bribery charge.
During the trial, the prosecutor from the Manhattan District Attorney's Office disclosed three e-mails between the office and the mother of Mr. Smith, who was in a Connecticut prison. Mr. Smith had been convicted of drug possession and faced a probation violation charge.
One of the e-mails assured the mother that the prosecutor "would do everything in [her] power" to have the Connecticut prosecutors "see that [Smith] deserved a break because of what had happened to him when he was younger."
The prosecutors also said they had arranged phone privileges for the former student and stopped his transfer to an adult facility.
Justice Berkman called the late disclosure "inexcusable." She denied the defense's request for a hearing, but instructed the jurors that it could consider the e-mails in evaluating Mr. Smith's credibility and they could draw an adverse inference against the prosecution based on the tardiness of the disclosure.
The First Department agreed that the government should have disclosed the e-mails sooner. But it also criticized the prosecution for its failure to disclose that Mr. Smith had once transported guns and that he believed Ms. Sinha caused his parole violation.

Brighton, NY -- A Brighton woman working as a teacher has been charged with having sex with a 15-year-old male student.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says Rachel Santora is charged with second degree criminal sex act and endangering the welfare of a child.
The investigation revealed that the incidents occurred over the summer at Santora's Brooklawn Drive residence, where she was tutoring the student while employed by the Rush-Henrietta School District.
Santora is currently employed with Monroe #1 BOCES.
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (CBS/AP) Soap opera actress turned high school drama teacher, Lisa Glide, has been sentenced to five years probation after pleading guilty to having sex with a high school student twice off campus, according to MyCentralJersey.com.
But the supposed victim, who was 17-and-a-half at the time, says he pursued her.
According to MyCentralJersey.com, at Glide's sentencing, the victim, who is now a college sophomore, sent a letter on her behalf which read, "I feel the entire case was blown far out of proportion and reason... I was the initiator of the contact, not Lisa Glide. I was clearly not a young child and Lisa Glide was not a sexual predator."
Regardless, prosecutors had requested a jail term of up to 364 days for the 35-year-old teacher from Howell, N.J. But at Monday's sentencing hearing Superior Court Judge Frederick DeVesa said jail time would not serve any useful purpose.
DeVesa noted testimony that Glide, who is not married, was suffering from cancer and depression when the affair with the student, then a senior at Old Bridge High School, took place. She was arrested in December 2008.
Once a soap opera actress, Glide started teaching in the district in September 2004 as a drama teacher, the Jersey web site reports. She served as an adviser for the school theatre program, directing school productions.
Glide pleaded guilty in June to endangering the welfare of a child.
Well, my point is that pretty much every guy (and girl) thinks about it occasionally, both from the student wanting to have at it with the teacher, and from the teacher being turned on by the student.
But it only becomes a crime at the point that they act on it while still in the teacher-student relationship.

A former basketball coach and gym teacher at a prestigious New York City high school faces statutory rape charges for her alleged sex abuse of a male student.
Megan Mahoney, 24, was arrested Monday for allegedly having regular sexual contact with the same 16-year-old student over a period of more than two months beginning in late October 2013, the Staten Island Advance reports.
She faces 30 counts of statutory rape in the case. The New York Post reports:
Mahoney romped with the teen “on numerous occasions, that is at least two times per week during the period,” court papers claim.
She also was charged with four counts of “criminal sexual act” because of mutual oral sex that she and the boy allegedly engaged in “at least two times per month during said period.”
In January, Mahoney resigned from Moore Catholic High School in Staten Island, where she taught gym and was an assistant coach for the women's basketball team.
Investigators said at some of the encounters happened on school grounds. In August, the victim told the New York Post that the illicit relationship began shortly after Mahoney allegedly approached him in the gym and offered to coach him in basketball.
“We would just drive around and [do it] in the car,” the boy, whose name was withheld, told the newspaper.
Richard Postiglione, the Moore's athletic director, was also investigated for allegedly failing to report sex abuse accusations against Mahoney and another female teacher at the school.
Before she was a coach, Mahoney was also a student athlete, playing basketball for Fordham University and Wagner College.

SAPULPA, Okla. -- Police say an elementary school teacher was arrested on multiple charges after accidentally leaving her Facebook page open on a school computer.
Officers were called to Holmes Park Elementary School on Monday after a teacher found Megan Sloan's Facebook page open on a computer, according to KOKI-TV.
Authorities say the page featured a conversation where Sloan reportedly asked about using and selling heroin.
Detectives told KOKI that during the investigation, Sloan allegedly admitted to pawning two iPads that belonged to the school district. She also reportedly admitted to using money from field trips for gas and drugs.
When officers searched Sloan's purse, they allegedly found syringes and substances that tested positive for meth and heroin.
Sloan was arrested on embezzlement, three counts of possession of controlled drugs within 1,000 feet of a public institution and possession of drug paraphernalia.

28-year-old British physics teacher was indefinitely banned from the classroom after she was reportedly caught having drunken sex with a student in a plane bathroom -- and on Thursday police said they were investigating the allegations.
Eleanor Wilson, of South Gloucestershire, was coming back from a July 2015 school trip to Switzerland with students when she started flirting with a boy near the back of the plane while she was taking care of another student who was sick, Metro UK reported.

The head of the school allegedly learned of the relationship in September 2015 and, after speaking to Wilson, no action was taken because there was no corroborating evidence. Several months later, she again denied meeting with the student outside of school and having sex with him.
The student told the panel that Wilson told him to keep quiet about their relationship and to delete all his texts from her while the school investigated.
The relationship eventually came to light eight months later, when Wilson received an email from another student who said he would reveal everything unless she had sex with him.
Wilson had previously denied allegations that the pair had sex and claimed they simply “hugged on occasion.” She also admitted that they met up outside of school, but denied they drank alcohol.
She was not in attendance at the panel’s hearing.
Wilson had worked at the school since 2013. After returning from Switzerland, she told a school newsletter: “The trip will provide a real source of inspiration for our young people as they continue with their studies and think about their future career paths.”
