I should have included Gump, if for no other reason than it is one of the few movies that portrays hippies as what they are: clueless, self destructive and/or evil.

In no particular order....

Jaws I've never got tired of watching this movie and it still has me on the edge of my seat.

Star Wars I saw this shortly after my 5th birthday. It was only the second film I’d seen at the cinema and it had a tremendous effect on me.

Dead Man A psychedelic western - Johnny Depp is mild mannered accountant - William Blake - who finds himself being pursued by bounty hunters and is befriended by an Indian who believes that he is the visionary English poet, William Blake.

Until the End of the World A rambling sci-fi road movie set at the end of the 20th century.

Naked Lunch David Cronenburg's attempt at filming William Burrough's impenetrable novel. If you haven’t seen this you really should rent it. It's weird and also incredibly funny. Early on in the film, a giant cockroach confronts the main character, William Lee, and informs him that his wife is really an elite core centipede. Later, William returns to some semblance of reality with what he believes to be the broken remains of his typewriter but to his friends is a pillow case full of empty liquor bottles and used syringes. Cronenburg incorporated the real life killing of Burrough's wife into the film. Joan Burroughs died after William attempted to shoot a glass off the top of her head.

Crash Based on a story by J G Ballard about people who get off on car accidents. I got so drawn into this film, that when it was over, I walked around London in a daze. It really spoke to me.

Short Cuts Robert Altman took a handful of short stories by the writer, Raymond Carver, and weaved them together into an ambitious, sprawling narrative.

Wings of desire / Faraway, so close! Pretentious but hugely influential pair of German films about Angels watching over Berlin. A dire remake was cobbled together for the U.S. market.

Naked Mouthy northerner, Johnny, arrives in London. Sleeps rough, meets strange and unpleasant characters; has the shit kicked out of him and encounters a rich, educated and equally unpleasant version of himself. The film concludes with him limping determinedly away from his one chance at stability.

Magnolia Similar in many ways to Short Cuts. The scene where you see the characters singing individual lines from Aimee Mann’s song Wise Up is tremendously powerful.

Winged Migration A beautifully shot and minimally narrated documentary following birds on their migratory flights.

Pi Genius mathematician discovers a number that explains the workings of the universe but which also causes his computer to melt down and leads him to experience paralysing brain seizures.

Hannibal The darkly comic and atmospheric sequel to The Silence of the Lambs.

For Your Eyes Only My favourite Bond film by a long shot and one in which Bond doesn’t score a decisive victory over his enemies. It ends in stalemate with the Russians

Angel Heart An atmospheric horror flick. Mickey Rourke’s private eye is manipulated by his mysterious client.

I saw Fast Times on Encore West a couple nights ago. I thought it was kind of overrated, I've always heard from people that it's one of the ten funniest movies of all time. What was so funny about it?
