This is old news, but I wasn't around to post it when I saw it:

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/keye/20040929/lo_keye/crawfordnewspaperendorseskerry

Quote:

A Texas weekly newspaper that bills itself as President Bush (news - web sites)'s hometown paper has endorsed Democrat John Kerry (news - web sites) for president. The Lone Star Iconoclast says the Massachusetts senator will restore American dignity. The Crawford-based newspaper has a circulation of about 425 and endorsed Bush in 2000. Bush's ranch is near Crawford. The editorial says Texans should rate the candidates not by hometown or political party, but by where they intend to take the country. The Iconoclast editorialized in support of the invasion of Iraq (news - web sites) and publisher W. Leon Smith backed Bush and the invasion in a BBC interview. But now the editorial says Americans were duped into believing Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) had weapons of mass destruction.

I know many of you will try and claim that a small town newspaper in the middle of conservative Texas is somehow "biased" towards the left. But as the article states, the newspaper endorsed Bush 4 years ago, and the editors previously supported the war in Iraq.

This is even less meaningfull when one considers the following:

Iconoclast publisher W. Leon Smith, who co-wrote the editorial with two other writers, is ...the mayor of Clifton and a Democrat who was defeated twice in campaigns for the Texas House of Representatives.

Furthermore, if you click on the link, it reveals that, in addition to the author being a democratic politician, the rest of the town vehemently disagrees with him, to the point where people are not buying the paper any more.

In addition, if we are going to play the game that there is any significance to who the "hometown" papers endorse, it should be noted that Kerry's hometown paper has endorsed Bush:

In an editorial that appeared in Sunday's paper, The [Lowell Mass] Sun said national security is the top issue in this year's election, and that Bush has kept the promise he made after the Sept. 11 attacks to protect Americans and bring terrorists to justice.

"Can anyone deny that President Bush has not delivered? America, the terrorists' No. 1 target, has recovered from its tragic wounds and rebounded. It remains safe to this day," the newspaper said.

"What might a lesser leader have done, faced with the daunting task of deciding America's course against withering, partisan attacks from Democrats, media propagandists, disingenuous U.N. officials and disloyal White House operatives selling their souls for profit during a time of war?

"A lesser leader might have caved in. President Bush has stood his ground."

The paper criticized what it said was Kerry's unimpressive legislative record and lack of political conviction.

"Like incoming and outgoing tides, Kerry is content to go with the flow. In a dangerous world infested with sharks, Kerry would be chum at America's expense," the paper wrote.
