Sorry, but I just don't get it. Maybe it's that damned artificial android heart again, but I am not understanding the concept of Internet girlfriends. What's the point?
I see a lot of heavy flirtation and such, and that makes sense in itself, but I don't get the pairing-up part. I hate to name names, but we all know of female-male poster match-ups that seem to have happened over the course of time. And occasionally I even see the use of the word "girlfriend" or "boyfriend" to describe the relationship. That's what I don't really get. It's a fake commitment, y'know?
In the past I used to frequent chat-rooms quite a bit, and I used to chat with very pleasant girls who were nice to flirt around with, but I tried to stay away from any kind of attachments with them, especially the Internet girlfriend kind (though I have noticed that females in particular seem to move towards an Internet attachment whereas most males tend to stick with heavy but uncommital flirting). I considered them friends and fun to talk with, but the idea of a fake attachment just baffles me. As I said, what's the point? It's not like it's going to actually go anywhere, right? Especially when, in some cases at least, one or both already has a very real relationship with a boyfriend/girlfriend, or husband/wife.
So maybe it's just this cold android heart of mine, but I don't get the appeal of Internet girlfriends. This is something I've been interested in discussing for quite a while, now. Any thoughts?

Well, I feel very strongly about this, it happened to me....
I won't say too much because I still consider the female part of this a good friend, but my ex (who shall remain nameless-and many of you know who) started a relationship with someone hundreds of miles away. I'm sure it started out quite innocently, but as the weeks and months went on, it turned out not to be innocent at all. I know he held much more of an attachment to her than she did to him, but he would tell her things like, "I just had great sex with my wife. It was so good, because I thought of you the whole time."
So, over time it played a MAJOR role in breaking up our marriage.
I made friends with the girl, we have struck up quite a friendship. I don't talk to her much, but we still keep in contact and I don't blame her for what happened. She was meerly having fun, but to my ex, he was in it for more than fun. He even went so far as to buy a web cam so he could show her some "body parts."
It was an eye opening experience for me and it was also devestating. She feels really bad about the whole thing, but as I already said, I don't blame her. As for him, well, he moved on to more and more women (obviously other than me) and now he and I are in the process of a divorce. That is not the only thing that broke us up, but it was kinda the icing on the cake that started it all. I realized after this happened that we would not make it much longer, as a married couple.
I have fun and flirt with people on here too, I talk with some of them through emails and such and I would love to meet and even call some of you, but I know my boundries. I don't understand the idea of in internet relationship. It really isn't a relationship at all....

I had a similar thing happen to me as wenchie. Most of you know I think. But I'll not go into it again. I am the biggest flirt on line, but I tried that internet dating thing, it was as exciting as well....nothing. So I don't mess with it anymore.

Internet girlfriends. If you weren't boyfriend/girlfriend in the real world beforehand, then that stuff won't usually pan out. Sure, you can be friends and all, maybe close enough to meet eventually, but having a complete relationship devoid of physical proximity, emotional development and real world huggin' and kissin'?! Another babe sullied by TK's affections?!?  I've never had an "internet girlfriend", but I have met ladies and dated via the internet. It didn't work. For some reason, the personalities that clicked online didn't work in person. I like my relationships developed the old-fashioned way, I guess. Meet, be friends, date, then develop the relationship...and all of it in the real world.
