Not comic (as in Superman, Spider-Man, and Batman) but comic strip (as in Peanuts, Garfield, and Dilbert).

What's the best comic strip of all time? What's the best comic strip still in publication?

I don't know really, I'm leaning towards either

Zits

or

Buckles

Zits is definitely a favorite of mine. Garfield was hilarious, although the quality's been slipping slightly in recent years.

The best of all time, though...I'd have to go with Peanuts.

I was a big Garfield fan as a kid. Seems lame these days, but the earlier ones were great.

Of all time? I'd have to go with either Calvin & Hobbes or The Far Side. Peanuts was lame. The only thing good to come out of that was the various Charlie Brown tv specials.

As for best strip currently in publication? Get Fuzzy. It's funny and absurd and just wonderful.

Calvin and Hobbes, Bloom County, Get Fuzzy, Far Side, and early Peanuts rule. All else is crap.

Garfield was my favorite comic as a kid, but Bloom County is my favorite comic of all time.

True, Penny Arcade is good, really good.

I like GUcomics aswell, plus there are some specialized comicstrips which I like really much. Though you'll have to know the background for the comics to understand what they're talking about

If we are talking the best of all time, it's "Peanuts."

People, especially people who aren't old enough to remember the strip's heydey, sometimes unfairly judge it only on the stuff from the 80s and 90s. Or they try to compare it to strips that had much short lives, such as "Calvin and Hobbes."

However, the strip, from the late 50s to the mid 1970s, was a marvel of compact storytelling, characterization and draftsmanship. It influenced everything that came after, from the aforementioned "Calvin" to the exisential stuff in the "Far Side."

Calvin and Hobbes has got to be in the top 5.

Top 5, no particular order:

Calvin and Hobbes
Bloom County
Peanuts
The Far Side
Blondie

Blondie hits my list out of sheer longetivity. That strip is 74 fucking years old, and it's still pretty damn fresh!

We should do a lits of the crappiest comic strips...........
