I know they look cool but please...... Imagine throwing a CAPE onto an air plane. I know it wouldn't look cool but by god the crash sure would! Can anyone do a comic book with no capes? Better yet,,,, some bad guy/gal that knows how to fight and turn capes against those whom wear them... Now there is a good idea for a villain (that's a joke). I knew there had to be a reason I enjoyed the Ultimate Universe so much. Even Thor has no cape. I hate capes!!!! NUFF SAID!!!!

Batman's cape is strategical. It's supposed to help fear factor.

Isn't the purpose of batmans cape to make him appear larger, which makes him harder to hit with bullets?

Fear Factor? Thank the big guy comics are about the look and not reality. lol Batman would be in real trouble. hahahaha I still hate the cape! Street thugs would beat Batman to death thanks to his cape. I still say Superman would do it as things are..... Superman would kill Batman. Yep...... Cape or not,,, Superman would do it....

Post-rationalisation.

Its supposed to give the character the feeling of movement when drawn. Which is why Wolverine is drawn in static poses.

Have you seen The Incredibles yet? There's a joke in there about how it doesn't work for superheroes to wear capes. Funny stuff.

neither does it work for superheros to have long hair, but you don't see Wonder Woman shaving bald, do you?

If realism is so important to you, and you're dealing with comics, shouldn't the functionality of capes be the last thing on your list of priorities?

In my dream, the world had suffered a terrible disaster. A black haze shut out the sun, and the darkness was alive with the moans and screams of wounded people. Suddenly, a small light glowed. A candle flickered into life, symbol of hope for millions. A single tiny candle, shining in the ugly dark. I laughed, and blew it out. - Joker

If you want to get technical, the reason Batman has a cape is because Superman had one. Same with the undies on the outside. Bob Kane admitted to just tracing Superman's outline and doing minor changes.

But, as has been said, even looking at the early '39-40's material, Batman's cape is drawn cloaked over his body and sticking out a good bit to make him appear bigger than he was. Rationalisation or not, it is still a valid explaination.

something i'm fine with. as a miller fan, you could also see the same thoughts regarding the chest symbol, which previously was without logical explanation.

if batman were to make sense, he wouldn't have a cape, wouldn't have a symbol, wouldn't have a name, wouldn't wear a mask, wouldn't have handles atop his head, and wouldn't drive around in a big, splashy, fire-spewing car that everyone can clearly see heading towards wayne manor every evening.

but the fact that the character has done all that for so long without much fuss means its become acceptible. its now just a matter of making it excusable.

and, with comic book physics and logic, writers can get all sortsa creative with the reasoning.

the chest symbol, as mentioned above, is (or was) to draw gun fire to a part of the body easier to shield.

the cape has many uses. its been used as an offensive weapon, with weighted edges that batman can whip around. its been used to help cloak him in darkness and hide. it helps to give the regular-man-sized bruce wayne the appearance of being much larger and demonic. it helps to grab the air and slow his descent in roof top leaps. it can be shielded in ways his costume can't to protect from acid or fire.

Yes and no. He did use Superman's body as the base image for Batman's form. But originally, he had given Batman wings on his back ala Hawkman. (One of the inspirations for the design being a sketch by Leonardo Da Vinci of a flying machine with bat like wings.)

It was Bill Finger's suggestion that Kane give him a cape, instead. You can still see in the early appearances where Kane gives the cape a more winglike appearance.

Capes are a visual aid in a character's appearance, primarily used in a visual medium. Are they dated? Sure, for most characters. But, Batman's cape still works where many don't. Why does Thor need a cape, for instance? He doesn't. At least, not a bright, red one.

Hey, I'm just saying what Bob Kane himself had said in an interview.

Batman's cape has weighted ends so when he spins around or swings the cape at something it can help in a fight.

An interesting proposition. I don't see why not.

It would make a good Elseworlds story, if nothing else.
