Well, I've been looking at the various companies to see what they have to offer (plans & phones) . . . I currently have an old AT&T plan (500 any time minutes and unlimited nights & weekends, plus 25 text mesages, it no longer exists but it's still "active" for me) that costs me about $42 a month after taxes & fees. My phone, a Nokia 6560, is okay but I wish there was more I could do with it. Of course, AT&T was bought out by Cingular so the AT&T stores will slowly begin to disappear . . . and that's part of the reason why I'm looking into new phones/providers. I still haven't switched to Cingular . . . which is why I still have my old AT&T plan and am still getting my bill from them. The people at the Cingular store (I stopped in the same week the buy-out was announced) and they told me that I can keep my plan as long as I want, but if I wanted a new phone, I had to switch over to Cingular. Thus . . . my reasoning for looking into other companies and what they have to offer. I want the best bang for my buck each month, yet not pay more than $80 for a phone. So, anyone have any insight into which providers have better Customer Service, calling areas, phone selection, etc.?

recently switched to T-mobile. its deadly annoying. anywhere in the Port Huron MI area i get canadian service (rogers and M <something>-tech) but besides that not a bad carrier.
And, to be fair, one of my favorite friends there is blind and I take every opportunity available to make fun of that and we're still friends. That guy never fit there. He never got the spirit of the RKMBs. We're gonna keep an eye on the obits, see if he finally left or if he really did have a heart attack.

My cousin works for Sprint and swears by them. As she told me, Cingular (my company) is going to some newfangled gsm technology or somesuch nonsense, so the coverage is going to be drastically reduced. She's said this for over a year or two now and I've had no problems, in fact I have great service. I'm currently on the 1000 anytime minutes with all the bells and whistles of a normal plan plus roll-over for only $40 a month.

Sprint sucks. Thier shady practices most noteably thier dis-honest pro rate, almost poor customer service and spending limit cut offs. I would avoid Sprint like the plauge. I sell Verizon over Sprint any time, and Sprint pays more.
I love selling Verizon. Now, Verizon doesn't have the greatest of phones but there are a few gems. All manufactured by LG. Now with Verizon you may pay a little more (34.99+ Cellular Taxes$$$$$ for 300 anytime + unlimited nights and weekends)(for 39.99 you get 400 anytime and unlimited nights and weekends and unlimited verizon wireless to verizon wireless phone.).
However they do have the nations biggest, most dependable network. Although it's a patchwork network.(meaning some towers are still analog instead of digital, but you will get and be able to make calls.)
Also 99% of the people who work for Verizon customer service are actully competant and also live in America, instead of some other companys who out source thier fucking help desks.
Verizon wireless is the only provider with service in the NYC tunnels.
Go with Verizon.

BTW Cingular has always been GSM. It's AT&T that is switching to the GSM.

My biggest problem is there's too much variety:
- Boyfriend has Sprint
- Mom has Verizon
- Sister has AT&T
- Work employees have Verizon (for now).
All these "mobile-to-mobile" plans that they're offering now are great, but only if you have someone to talk to frequently who also has the same carrier that you do. For me, the one I talk to the most is my boyfriend . . . but there's no way in hell I'm going to sign up with Sprint (I keep trying to get him to change but he just signed up for another 2 years, sigh). Also, maybe you can tell me Mr. I Sell Verizon . . . what's the best tri-mode/digital-analog phone that you carry? That's under $80?

I'm very warry of T-Mobile. They carry a few cool phones and their contracts start out at 1 year . . . but when I looked at their coverage map I think my face went pale. Of all the carriers, I think T-Mobile has the worst coverage overall. Yeah, they cover the major/urban areas but once you start to head away from there . . . I think you're hosed.

See, I've been with AT&T since 1998. The last time I renewed a contract was back in February 2002 and I didn't buy a GSM capable phone and my reception is pretty damn good just about everywhere I go (except a few stores).
My brother-in-law has AT&T as well, but he has a GSM phone and gets dropped calls all the time. He lives/works in the same general area that I do, so if that's what's going to happen to me if I switch to Cingular and the whole network (AT&T's included) goes over to that GSM crap . . . I'm gonna lose a lot of calls; not good.
Verizon and Cingular have these 15 or 30 day "trial periods" with their phones and supposedly you can take them back if you're not happy with them. But if you're unhappy, then what? You keep trying phones until you find one that works where you make most of your calls?
I also want to bring my current number with me (I've had it for a helluva long time) and if I end up unhappy with this new company I'm screwed and can't go back to AT&T.

T-mobile is a relatively new company so they don't have enough customers to support everywhere. They might in a couple years though. I would say not to get them because they have that fugly grampa fucker as their spokeswoman.

Try the LG 3200 or 4500. Hell the Nokia 3589i is as ugly as hell but they work really good and most Radio Shacks that sell Verizon give them for free.
I don't know if it's tri mode but the LG6100 is very nice and is 8o bucks after a 50 dollar mail in rebate.

No. It's 15 bucks for a two year contract. 35 bucks on a one year contract.
Now that effects your upgrade time (the time you are required to have the phone.)
On a one year contract you get the Upgrade/new customer price on the phone in ten months, on a two year it's twenty-two months.
That's important because if your phone is stolen three months into your two year contract and have to buy a new phone, a new phone would cost you much more than you first pay for it.
Like two hundred bucks more.
Also on a one year contract prepare to pay more for the phone.
Most carriers including Verizon have insurance you can buy on your phone. It's five dollars a month if you choose to get it and a fifty dollar deductable to replace a lost or stolen phone.
If you don't want to pay the extra five bucks just don't lose the phone.
Also most stores offer an extended warrenty where I work we sell a fifty dollar two year warrenty that covers the antenna and replaces the battery at the end of each year. Also two years parts, labor, blah blah blah.
The out of the box manufacturers warranty is only one year and does not cover the antenna, or the battery.
I have never lost or broken my phone. knock on wood. Balloonknot I think lost two within a year. I know at least one. The other he may have lost and found again which he did often.

Well, I went with Verizon and got the LG VX6100 phone. I also went with the $39.99 with 400 minutes a month and the $2.99/month 100 text messages (I tend to use a lot).
So, we'll see how it goes. I've only made one call so far . . . and got Pat's voicemail. hehe
