Miller Doubles Up On Batman

Quote:

Comic-book legend Frank Miller told SCI FI Wire that he's currently at work on two new Batman titles. "One of them I'm 120 pages into right now, and it's called Holy Terror Batman," Miller said in an interview while promoting the upcoming film version of his comic film Sin City, which he co-directed with Robert Rodriguez. "It's a 'propaganda comic book' of Batman versus of Al Qaeda. Come on, somebody had to do it."

Miller, who's best known for creating Batman: The Dark Knight Returns and Batman: Year One, added: "And I'm working with Jim Lee on a new series called Batman & Robin the Boy Wonder. That's the early training of Robin." Holy Terror Batman and Batman & Robin the Boy Wonder will be published later this year.

No, no one had to do a Batman VS Al Qaeda comic. Thats one of the worst ideas I've ever heard.

Is Batman and Robin The Boy Wonder the new name for Batman and Robin All Stars? I hope thats a misprint.

I think Batman would take a pass on dealing with al qaeda.................mainly 'cause you can't deal with them without killing a few of them here and there. And we all know what a pussy he is when it comes to a little killing!

I don't like it because I don't think comic book characters should be tied to this kind of thing. I think it cheapens the threat of terrorism in some ways.

i wouldn't mind it so much if it kept batman in gotham.

i'm never really a big fan of non-jla stories where batman has to travel around the globe for whatever reason. just seems inherently out of character, for someone so driven to protect his city.

whats worse... it just visually looks weird. a cape-less batman wandering the desert, or whatever... meh.

however, if he was foiling a terrorist plot in gotham, that'd be sweet, since we'd have all the visual appeal of batman in the proper backdrop and setting, as well as a logical storyline, with major cities dealing with terrorist threats.

Maybe it's a sign of how self-parodying the action figure market has become, but I can envisage this Batman figure; his cape moulded so that it resembles a pair of demonic wings while in one outstretched hand he holds a large gothic cross with a bat crucified on it.

The hardback graphic novel which inspired the figure would have been massively hyped and highly acclaimed upon its release. Years later all but the most diehard fans would admit that it was an overpriced, high-concept exercise in confusion with no discernable story. Of course a small number of fanboys would doggedly claim that it was the best thing to ever happen to Batman and would continue to lavish plaudits on its hack writer.

That would make it acceptable. If he went to the Middle East to fight terror it would suck.

No kidding. I was a loyal Bat zombie for years, but his stance on killing always annoyed me.

This is Batman however. With a sound plan, I'm sure he could take care of hundreds of fanatical killers in mountainous terrain with some well-thrown batarangs, and some ninja kicks.

Not me. It's not so much the fact that he didn't kill people that attracted me to the book, but the fact that it just made sense for his character.

It does raise the question as to why the World's Greatest Detective can't find Osama bin Laden.

You know... if you think about it... Batman has been fighting the DCU version of Al Quaeda for about thirty years, in Ras Al Ghul and his League of Assassins.

Ras is a terrorist nobleman of Middle Eastern descent out to "purify" the world with the assistance of his worldwide network of terrorists.

Bin Laden is a terrorist nobleman of Middle Eastern descent out to "purify" the world with the assistance of his worldwide network of terrorists.

Of course, in the DCU, Bin Laden would not get very far with his group before being taken over by Ras's forces and given the choice to join them or die.

Which is my main problem with comic books that try to deal with Bin Laden: in a world where you have Ras, Kobra (or in Marvel Doom and the Red Skull), etc., and supervillains that level entire cities in a given month, something as bad as 9/11 would look relatively minor league.

I always thought it goofy that in JMS's Spider-Man, there was a pic of some supervillains crying (well, maybe not literally) over the Trade Center wreckage. Kingpin makes sense, since he lives in New York, but Doom and Magneto are a smidge harder to justify.

Yeah, they were crying and yeah it was ridiculous.

First off, both Doom and Magneto have killed, or tired to kill, more people than Bin Laden ever dreamed of.

Second off, they both hate us.

Magneto's reaction would be "What do you call 3000 dead humans? A good start."

Doom's reaction would be "Bah, so a few paltry thousand of Richards' accursed countrymen died for the weakness of their leaders. What matter is it for Doom? Let that oil fattened madman Bin Laden dare try to threaten as single sovereign subject of Latveria and then he shall know how a TRUE ruler deals with such as he..."

Magneto and Doom were crying?! ............
Magneto would have laughed himself to sleep after hearing the news of 9/11, he'd probably have it on DVD
I know it was just to try and convey Marvels sadness, but how could you ever enjoy a Doom story knowing he travelled to America and cried at the 9/11 wreckage?.......

Batman vs Al Qaeda will be an over-the-top statement about how Miller is against terrorism, and he'll obvious convey this by having Batman humiliate the organisation. It wont be a full story without Batman travelling out to the middle East though

Doom actually shed a tear. I can understand what the writer was going at, but he executed it so poorly it ended up being ridiculous.

That's a good point, and it would have to be handled with some sensitivity.

Even any delay on Batman's behalf after 9/11 would raise the question - why did he wait?

I think the best course of conduct would be for Batman ultimately to turn up empty handed - a task too great for him, or be prevented from completing his job by the army.

Yeah. Imagine if Coast City had actually been destroyed, and what effect that would have had upon the global economy, national infrastructure, people generally.

Or the storyline in Aquaman where San Diego slid into the ocean.

In the real world, that would probably plunge the US into finacial and emotional chaos.

In the DCU, no one talks about it very much.

All of which goes back to the point that, in the comic book world, Bin Laden is a piker and 9/11 a "human interest" story.

All the more reason to ignore it in comic books.

I think it'd be better if Marvel tackled this kind of story. Barring the utter ridiculousness of Magneto and Dr. Doom crying, someone like Captain America trying to search out Bin Laden would be more suitable, especially since Marvel is a lot similar to the real world than DC, which, coinsedentally, doesnt seem to have a global economy, national infrstructure, or any government at all [if they do have a government, they're all lazy bastards who let super-powered gods run amock, something we know would never happen in the real world, especially since the government would wage all out war on any super-powered hero that threatened their power]
