To me a sport has to meet several requirements.
1 It has to be something that has a clear winner and a clear loser. It cannot end in a tie.
2 The outcome cannot be determined by a judge.
3 It has to have teams, and the teams have to affect the other team.
4 It can't be something that anyone can play at a prfessional level.
5 You have to be able to use your hands.
6 It has to have set rules.
7 It can't have the word "extreme" in the title of the sport.

Going by these rules, I believe only Football, Baseball, and Basketball are the only true sports. Things like NASCAR and other "motorsports" should be called races. Same with Running. Its not a sport, its a race. Activities like bowling should never be called a sport. I'm not insulting these things, I just don't think they should be labeled as sports.

Thoughts?

I could see calling Bowling a "competition" instead of a sport.....but really what's the difference........you are still competing against someone to win.

I think tennis is a sport, but since its usually played one on one its not a true sport.
Golf is not a sport since you cannot affect the other persons score.

But like golf, you cannot affect the other persons score. So it is not a sport.

Um, hockey is a sport. And I don't think there will be any more ties in the regular season when it comes back, because they are seriously considering shootouts.

In the playoffs, hockey settles ties with full 20 minute overtime periods that are played until someone scores. A game can go one forever. There was a five-overtime playoff game just a few years ago.

And as for skill level, most athletes in other sports can't play hockey at the highest level (NHL). The level of coordination involved is increadible. Have you tired skating while handling a puck? It's not that easy. And shooting it in a tiny goal with a huge, well padded goalie in the way who presents a moving target, while some guy is trying to line you up for a hit or trying to tie up your stick? And there are the guys who can deflect a 100 mph slapshot half an inch out of the goalie's reach.

Sorry Rex, they don't come more difficul, physical, or skilled than hockey.

Football can end in a tie. It doesn't happen often, but it happens.

Yup. Just the one.

Using Rex's guidelines, wrestling (Greco-Roman or Free-Style, not Sports Entertainment) just misses making the cut because of provision #1. And wrestling IS a sport. You might want to amend your list of provisions, Rex...

So, when hockey comes back, if it's without ties, then according to Rex it will be a sport. But football isn't a sport, according to Rex, even though he says it is.

To quote the Madman: "That's fucked up. That ain't right."

A sport involves...

1. Control of one's body and its movements, and hand-eye, foot-eye coordination
2. Non-ordinary expenditure of human energy (for it to be a sport, it must be possible for one to get tired while doing it)
3. Outcomes determined within the field of play (no judging to determine a winner)
4. Competition: A winner and a loser
5. Rules governing everyone's play and specific goals to be achieved within the competition.

So that means football, baseball, basketball, and hockey are obviously in there. But so are golf, motorsports, and bowlling. But chess isn't. Chess is clearly a competition, but it's not a sport. Walking is not a sport.

PS. I do believe that for hockey to regain any level of prominence in the American psyche, the NHL has to increase offenses and eliminate ties. Americans hate ties. We hate them as birthday gifts and we hate them as ends to our sporting events.

As Joe said, yep. In pro football, games not decided by the end of the overtime period are counted as ties. Very rare even in the NFL.

In college Divsion I-A, games are no longer permitted to end in ties. Overtime is played until a winner's decided, but the overtime's based on series of downs, not on the passage of time.

I consider the solo swimming that I do four or five times a week to be a sport. While I am not racing anyone there is still a strong competetive element. I'm swimming against the past version of me who set the fast lap time or who swam the half mile in a quickest overall time.

Standing & Reciting = physical activities. I don't think they're actually sports. But the "dictionary definition" is way too vague. By that same definition, Chess is a sport, and we know that's not the case.

Technically, don't most sports have "judges"?

Refs exist to be sure the players stick to the rules.

Judges exist to determine the winner.

Not.
