The search function has always sucked. The problem is that when you choose to search "in subject" only, it shows you results not only for the title of a thread, but for the title of each post in it. So, if you search "panties" and there's an 800-post thread named "panties", you'll get 800 results for that one thread.

i really don't understand why everyone has such trouble with it.

you can narrow the search down by poster (like yourself) if that makes it easier

That doesn't help when you're looking for a thread but don't remember who started it. And searching within individual post subjects is pretty useless, because for the most part they go unchanged for the whole thread (and when they do change, it's usually a gay-ed up variation of the original subject, like "The search function sucks gay men's cocks".)

so what are you actually searching for, like a keyphrase or joke that you remember in the thread?

can't you just search for that, in quotes, in the post body?

Searching for anything pre-update is a lot harder. Especially if you use the 'older than' criteria instead of 'newer than'.

I'm not searching anything right now, I'm just pointing out a problem I've had in the past. The discovery of quoted phrases did make it searching a lot easier, but every once in a while the 800 entries for one topic subject still get in the way.

For example, while searching all "issues" of a Writer's Block series. All issues were started by different posters, so I can't narrow it down that way. The only option is entering the name of the series in quotes... but then you have to sift through every reply made in each of the issues to get to the next one.

Let's take this thread for example. Velo started it back in Sept. of '04. So, I search for this exact thread title made by Velo more than two years ago.

the reason that search failed, i believe, is because you're tricking the system. you're asking for a post that is older than 2 years and newer than 0 weeks.

try removing the "0" and just leaving that blank (you might also have to change "weeks" to blank, but i dont think that matters)

Yes. Still didn't work. This is weird since it would search with those two before the update.

if i set up a search exactly as you have shown, but with nothing in the "newer than" row, it works for me.

because it says "date range" I've always put in an actual range, older than AND newer than. You know, both endpoints for the function.

the problem with doc's original search was that he was trying to search for something more than 2 years old, but also posted within the last week. which asplodes time.

however, if you wanted to search for something around christmas time, you'd say older than 5 months but newer than 9 months.
