For environmental watchdogs, this is to ensure that the desire for short term gain does not affect the environment in the long term.

2. The fires and mudslides are pretty much an annual event. They've been happening for thousands of years and are part of the ecology of the coastal mtn. ranges. I think its pretty clear that even among republicans, these two are at best the political equivalent to the "crazy old uncles" we tolerate because their good to us, not people we respect or admire.
