Hmmmm..... Is this supposed to be a real discussion or a loaded question?
Regarding the New Orleans incident you've linked to, we'll have to wait to see if it was, in fact, racially motivated. I'm pretty sure that racism was a heavy contributor to the harassment of a 64 year-old guy. But there's more to it than that. After all, a policeman did also push around a white news reporter who was trying to get the story. I think you have to remember some contributing factors.
1. New Orleans police are assholes to being with. Especially in the Quarter. They are also notoriously corrupt as indicated by the investigations of cops stealing cars from a local dealership just before the storm hit, stories of cops ignoring reported crimes of rape and assault, rumors of them shooting stranded pets for fun, and 250 of them just up and deserting their posts after the hurricane.
2. In the past two months these cops have had to deal with their city flooding twice, mass evacuations, 24 hour shifts, sleeping in their cars (only recently going to 12 hour shifts and getting rooms on board a docked cruise ship), losing everything they own to the storm, being shot at by gangs who stayed behind to loot and run wild, and having their whole family displaced.
Racism is most likely the reason that they targeted Davis. I'm not going to deny that. I just think that a normally volatile situation has been made even worse over the past two months. The second he questioned them or said something they didn't like, the damn just broke. I'm not saying that's an excuse, cuz it isn't. I'm just saying that New Orleans has been a powder keg as of late.

It's just one of those things that's never going to go away. We can pretend to be all civilized about it and all 'get along'. But with the slightest provocation, our inner feelings always seem to come out.
I don't really see an end to this shit. People know better...but knowing the facts and acting on emotion are two different things.

It is, in a sense, a loaded question. But I would like to discuss race here. The other thread was very interesting to me, and think that hearing different perspectives is a good thing.

What I'm most curious about is how geography and parenting shapes people's attitudes on race.
For example, as my mom is Norweigian and my dad is black, so it would be silly of me to be mistrustful of either side. By the same token, there are issues when one is mixed that are somewhat unique. For example, people's use of the "N" word towards me seems a bit strange because I'm only 1/2 black.
Thoughts?

Funny, however, whenever you hear some mixed race people, such as Halle Berry, they've clearly become distrustful of one side or the other, in Berry's case, the whites.

I know what you mean. It's always a bit strange when someone uses the "N" word towards me since..... you know...... I'm 0/0 black.
Seriously, though, I do find it odd that people of different races tend to segregate themselves in group environments. Look at a school cafeteria at lunch, for example. In junior high and high school I felt kind of odd when people wouldn't take time to talk to me because I was white and for no other reason. It's definetly a learned behavior. And all it does is breed more tension and distrust. When you treat a stranger with hostility, you're just reenforcing whatever stereotypes they might have of you.

I never saw Rodney King's beating as an example of racism, but as an example of police incompetence. King was clearly a sleaze bag who was on drugs and booze, driving recklessly and violent while refusing arrest. But they had to beat him that long in order to get him to comply. I've seen nurses take on PCP poppers twice his size without that amount of brutality.
This looks pretty bad though. It's not the beating of the main target that was bad it was how they were handling the witnesses and attacking them as well.

Thanks, Doc. But it doesn't show the other footage I watched where they kick him a few times while he's essentially hogtied and on the ground. Gotta say this doesn't look good, but it's not as bad as King was.

Here's an interesting story from Raleigh, N.C.: Smart black students being accused of "acting too white" is an issue Triangle educators are debating at a youth and race conference this week.
Students say the stigma is keeping some of their peers from doing well in school.
Tenth grader Anais Guzman is on the honor roll. She says some of her peers see the achievement as acting too "white."
"They can get high grades but they don't want to because they'll be considered as acting white, so they put white people down," Guzman said. Meanwhile, you also have black adults being subjected to the trope of "acting white" as well--for espousing conservative political positions or joining the Republican Party. The idea that achievement is "white" and lack thereof is "black" is an ugly stereotype that no doubt originated in white racism. Unfortunately, the problem today isn't just that some whites believe it; it is that some blacks have internalized it and recast it as a point of pride.
