Finally, after all the hype (there was a huge billboard poster just a few blocks from my home in the suburbs), Boondocks has arrived to Adult Swim. It got great reviews from both of the local papers over here. That really didn't surprise me.

Without spoiling the episode (I'll leave that to someone else), the family really did come to life on the small screen. This episode was a pretty good introduction to the Freeman's and their suburb. Althout we didn't get to meet any of their freinds yet, that would have been a lot for a first episode.

For some reason there has been some complaint about the use of the "N" word on this show. Seeing it in context I have to say that anyone who has a problem with how the word is used needs to step outside into the real world for a few minutes. Aaron McGruder isn't pulling his punches. However, I did think this ep was a little tame, by the comic's standards.

I don't know that this will be the next South Park. I think it will be the intelligent South Park, but with the "N" word thrown in instead of potty humor. That's not to say I don't like South Park (it has it's moments), I just think this will express itself in a more mature manner.

If you haven't seen the first episode yet, you'll get another chance on Saturday night at midnight (really Sunday morning).

My only complaint is the voice casting for Huey and Riley. I'm sorry, but they sound like little girls, not little boys. Maybe it will grow on me, or maybe Regina King will find a better pitch as the series goes on.

On the other hand, John Wittherspoon's Granddad was perfect.

Out of five , I give it:

Southpark makes fun of the left as well as the right. In order to be intellegent you have to steer clear of the sacred cows. Boondocks is itellegent because it's critisims rest heavily on teh right.

I don't find South Park very intelligent. I think there are a couple of solid eps each season, but on the whole, I just find it to be potty humor.

While Boondocks is heavily biased, I find it's presentation to be better. I think it's more intelligent, just biased.

While I very much dislike Stone and Parker, I'm gonna have to say that South Park is very intelligent in its satire. I disagree with a lot of what they say and think they show too little (edit out info) on some points, but their technique of getting those points across is brilliant. They exercise great amounts of subtlety in that "potty humor".

Yep. I agree. He really let his racism shine forth in this episode.

I didn't find it as shocking or offensive as anyone had feared. Sure, the word "nigger" was used often. But the first episode seemed loyal to the source material and McGruder's vision. Plus we've been treated to much worse on Chappelle Show - their send-up of Sesame Street, for example. The animation was solid, the humor was definitely there, and it was nice to see that Charlie Murphy is still working. I'll catch it again next week.

It wasn't as funny as I had anticipated and I could see why people might take offense, but it was interesting enough for me to watch it again before deciding if its worth following.

He had the gloves on for the first ep. This was much better. And Adam West as the defense attorney was perfect. Riley went on a great rant to Tom Dubois, and Huey's common sense was ignored as always. I love this show.

This was a nice, timely episode.

Some of it was genuinely funny, but I spent most of the episode just kinda sitting there with no reaction. Not a bad episode, but not the episode that makes me say, "I gotta catch this every week!". Nice nod to Cornel West, though, as one of the protestors against R. Kelly.

I've only seen parts of a couple episodes, and so far I'm neutral on it.

BTW, is it just me, or does Boondocks' animation remind anyone else of Americanime? It just seems like such an odd style of animation for a show like this.

It does have anime flavor, but based on the look of Huey and co. in the strip it seems to fit. I didn't get to see last night's ep. When does it repeat?

Oddly enough, I got the same advice from my Pops when I was about 17. I didn't listen...at the time, they were the only ones that swallowed.

I'm diggin' the show but, definitely not as much as the strip. The use of the word "nigga" is whatever to me, as I feel it's just a throw-in to make the show seem really controversial without any actual substance. Also, copious use of the term seems to amuse white folk. The strip is much funnier and authentically controversial without the use of the dreaded N-WORD.

I think that McGruder is kind of "dumbing down" his stuff for the first season; perhaps to build a small loyal following from those who know the strip...and combine that with some folks that check it out on occasion to see what the fuss is all about. He also wants to reach the smaller segment of folks that just want to see niggas ackin' like niggas; hence the over-use of the word, the spot-on representation of well believed stereotypes and the self-loathing Uncle Ruckus. (or whatever the pop-eyed old black guy playing checkers with Granddada is called.)

This season is a test to see if a 'toon with this type of cast, activist agenda and hard left P.O.V. can make it in a neo-con, Christian (corrupt) conservative, barely-contained-racist-as-hell, brown-shirt-facist, radical right wing political, social and economic climate that we have today.

Having said that, though, I don't think that McGruder's aim is soley and specifically at the right. If you are familiar with his work then you will realize that he targets his core audience (i.e. urban, blue-collar black folks)just as much, if not more than the right. Absolutely nobody realizes how just how fucked up black people can be like other black people (hence the opener on last night's show about crazy niggas). And since McGruder is black, it gives him carte blanche to say things that are fucked up but ring true without having to worry about being P.C.

I don't know how may eps are in for this season but, I think if the show makes it to a 2nd year, true fans of The Boondocks will get to see the righteous noise that we've seen in the strip.

Gotta agree with whoever commented about Regina King's voice work. I lke her better as Riley than as Huey. Her pitch is a little off. Huey sounds too much like a girl. Someone like Gabrielle Union would have been a better choice as her voice registers a little deeper and lower than King's. I am enjoying the voice work on the other characters though. John Witherspoon is just giving voice to the same character he's played his whole career and I find him funny as always.

Chack out an article where McGruder shares some thoughts about the show:

Technically, it would have to be one of the most moronic things you've ever read.

However, based on most of the stuff I've seen you post, my little mini-rant wouldn't rate in the top 100 of the most moronic things YOU'VE posted.

My perception (not McGruder's).

It's allowed to be different from yours. Based on my interpretation of many of your posts I'd say that I'm older than you, more ethnic than you, better educated than you, more experienced than you, more liberal than you and more open-minded than you.

It stands to reason that our opinions and perceptions will differ.

Yes, I realize you like people to think you have an intellect by being long-winded and saying other people are narrow-minded. But here in the real world, you can't make an extremist statement such as, "neo-con, Christian (corrupt) conservative, barely-contained-racist-as-hell, brown-shirt-facist, radical right wing political" and not be grilled regarding its "truth".

Blanket statements don't make you sound smarter, they just reveal you to be more bias. Maybe you'd actually like to back up your assertion that the media is one-sided--Especially on Adult Swim--Before you say it.

First...I don't get into long discussions on these boards anymore so I'm rarely, if ever' long winded. And I couldn't give a shit as to whether you or anyone else thinks I have an "intellect".

Second, the things you've posted say that you are narrow-minded...not me.

I've never claimed to NOT have a bias concerning this administration. I freely admit to it. Whether you agree or not is not my concern. My interpretation of the things I read, hear and see concerning this administration led to my so-called blanket statement. If you choose to come up with a different interpretation based on the same stuff that I am exposed to, that's cool.

However, you don't get to "grill" me because my truth is different from yours. There are conservatives on this board whom I respect...such as G-Man and WBAM. I don't agree with many of their positions but, I respect their arguements. Perhaps, I'll debate with one of them concerning my opinions.

As for you...I've seen in many threads in many forums that going back and forth with you is pointless. It's beneath me and a waste of my time. So instead of responding to you further. I will just say "Good Day".

I noticed you couldn't answer my question regarding your "truth". I guess that means your truth is too skewed to present.

Well, at least you're "more ethnic" than me, yes? So I guess that makes you right no matter what you say.

Somehow, I doubt that the same "Adult Swim" that runs "Family Guy," a show that once portrayed George W. Bush happily agreeing to do coke with US service men, is going to go all "neo-con, Christian (corrupt) conservative, barely-contained-racist-as-hell, brown-shirt-facist, radical right wing political, social and economic climate" about "the Boondocks."

*sigh*

Pariah, It's not that I "couldn't" answer your question. I chose not to answer it for 2 reasons:

1. I think you're a dickhead.
2. I wasn't referring to the media...least of all Adult Swim.

I am a comic book fan but that doesn't translate to 'toons and such. I don't watch Family Guy or any of the other stuff on Adult Swim. I've sat thru maybe 4 episodes of South Park and I haven't watched The Simpsons at all since college (15 years ago). I have no frame of reference to criticize the political bent of a block of animated shows on a network that exists to show cartoons. I didn't answer your question because I didn't accept its premise.

However, since G-Man, who I actually have respect for, made the same false assumption I feel it necessary to clarify my position. Let me break it down for y'all.

Neo-con: I thought that this was the new self referential term for Conservatives. Kinda like black folks using the word "nigga". I've heard Rush, O'Reilly and Hannity all use it. What...? Liberals aren't allowed? Is it the new "N-WORD"?

Christian (corrupt) conservative: Hmmmm...let's see: You've got Bill Frist, Libby Dole and Tom Delay being investigated/indicted for essentially have their hands elbow deep in the political cookie jar. You've got Libby and Rove apparently commiting acts of Treason under the direction of the VPOTUS. You've got political cronies like Mike Brown and Harriet Miers placed in or nominated for positions that they are distinctly under qualified for. Smells like corruption to me.

Barely-contained-racist-as-hell: You've got an administration that wishes to cut millions from social services that benefit a disproportionate number of minorities while, at the same time, attempting to give even more tax breaks to the top 5% of tax payers (that happen to be overwhelmingly white). Looks like a duck, walks like a duck, sounds like a duck...perhaps if I changed racist to classist, this wouldn't be an issue.

Brown-shirt-facist: Secret American run prisons in Eastern Europe? Thousands of prisoners "detained" indefinitely with no right to council at Gitmo? Using scare tactics such as falsely elevated terror alerts or apocolyptic speechs about the bird flu in attempt to divert attention from political "faux pas"? The Nazis would have been proud.

Radical right wing political, social and economic climate: While I am a self described liberal on many social issues, I'd probably categorize myself as more of a moderate/centrist politically. I've seen this administration move this country far right of center in many ways since 2000. This might not be that band a thing if the reality matched the rhetoric.

We were told that they would be fiscal conservatives.
Yet, just 5 years after a record surplus, we have an exploding deficit, high unemployment, a money pit vendetta conflict in the Middle East that is draining resources better spent at home, a disparity between the lowest and highest ends of the economic strata not seen since the Depression and the systematic transformation of a true Middle-Class to different levels of Working Poor.

We were told that this administration would operate from a moral high ground unlike that of the Clinton years. Yet the amount of corruption and scandals that is only beginning to come to light far outweighs one beer-goggling Bubba getting his dick sucked by a fat chick.

We were told we would be kept safe and terrorism would be eradicated. The attacks in Jordan last week should be enough to prove that terrorism is alive, well and doing just fine. If anything, we are creating more terrorists with all the ill will we are generating in the Middle East. I'll concede that there haven't been any successful attacks here since 9/11 but, can you honestly say that you can't see one coming? And soon?

We were told that this administration would be compassionate and attempt to unite rather than divide. Yet this country is more polarized than ever on issues ranging from gay marriage to the war in Iraq. I think much of this is due to the climate of intolerance created by religious activism, fear and propaganda that is being cultivated by this administration.

The intent of my statement was not to criticize the media. My intent was only to comment on the state of this country as I see it.

And to bring this whole thing back on topic...Based on McGruder's work and some of the things I've seen him say on TV appearances, I'd guess that we share many of the same views. However, I am only able to speak to my perceptions. Not his.

Finally, pariah, I mentioned being "more ethnic" than you simply to re-inforce the notion that you and I would have different P.O.Vs on many subjects. Not because me being black makes me more "right" or more "wrong" than you.

Of course, I could have said just about anything to make that point clear:
Unlike you, I have a large penis.
Unlike you, I'm not a virgin.
Unlike you, I don't jerk off to hentai.
Unlike you, I'm not so confused about my sexuality to the point where you've adopted an extreme homophobic stance to hide the fact that looking at boys gives you a tingle in your naughty bits.

You can feel good about one thing, though: You've forced me to prove your statement about being long winded. Perhaps I should just stick to the response that just about everybody here gives you:

You're a dick.

Oderint, dum metuant.

And, yet again, I force Bastard to make a long-winded post for the sake of quashing his own insecurities regarding the state of his intellect even though he said he wouldn't respond. He furthermore tries to cover this fact up by using G-man as his stooge.......

I WIN AGAIN!!

In any event: The funniest thing about your post is the fact that you try to fool people into thinking you weren't referring to the media--Which is bullshit. Boondocks is a television show. It is a form of media. You tried to say that McGruder was risking its possible lack of success due to right-wing majority--And, again, we can't forget that you associated this with a television show and nothing else......

And we can't forget this last tidbit of rationalization:

Quote:

Finally, pariah, I mentioned being "more ethnic" than you simply to re-inforce the notion that you and I would have different P.O.Vs on many subjects. Not because me being black makes me more "right" or more "wrong" than you.

You do realize that you lumped "more ethnic" in with, "better educated than you, more experienced than you, more liberal than you and more open-minded than you", which is a self-indulgent description of someone who fancies himself as, simply, better (considering your apparent high praise of Liberalism, I think it'd be safe to say that you consider the term "Liberal" to be apart of that endearing descriptive process). After you try to consort being ethnic with being "better", it's kind of hard for me to expect this statement to be made by someone who isn't a supremacist (that large genitals comment is kinda fishy too).

So please. Crawl out of my ass.

Why do people here have to turn everything into a political rant?

If I posted a thread saying Tom Cruises pet dog just shit on Nicole Kidmans lawn, you'd say it was cause Bush told him to do it!

Which is why I'm barely on this fucking site.

I remember when the partisanship wasn't so rampant and didn't bleed outside Deep Thoughts. Ah, the good ol' days.

There were some funny moments in tonight's ep., but I still don't find it as funny as Family Guy or ATHF. Fave moments: the Mariah Carey comment and the shopping spree with "Gold Digger" playing in the background. Felt sorry for Gramps. Huey's voice still irritates me - just doesn't sound right.

Dear, sweet Harley Kwink...I'm madly in love with you. Marry me! We can go to Canadia. Or Boston or something. It'll be grand...You know the cookies are a given. They are ALWAYS a given. You could dump me tomorrow and you'd still get the cookies. Boston..shit, wherever dyke weddings were legalized. And where better to rub their little piggie noses in how bad they suck than right on their doorstep? What are they gonna do? Be jealous of you? Stare furiously at your tah-tahs? Not willingly give you cookies, but instead begrudgingly give you their cookies? Woman, time to wake up to the powers you wield - Uschi

I watched South Park instead. Great episode. Didn't feel like I missed anything by not catching Boondocks.

For those that were pissed at my political musings, I apologize. This is neither the time nor place. Won't get that far off topic again.

For pariah: get at dese nuts, be-ya. That "ethnic" and "better" enough for you?

As far as last night's ep: Loved it...especially the part when Grandadddy was whuppin' Riley's ass in the back of the car.

Was it just me or was Cristal smokin' hot?

Oderint, dum metuant.

You are a god damned idiot, you know that? You ought to be smacked upside your dumb-fuck head, even after all these years. Shame on you!
