NEW YORK - Morgan Freeman says the concept of a month dedicated to black history is "ridiculous."
"You're going to relegate my history to a month?" the 68-year-old actor says in an interview on CBS' "60 Minutes" to air Sunday (7 p.m. EST). "I don't want a black history month. Black history is American history."
Black History Month has roots in historian Carter G. Woodson's Negro History Week, which he designated in 1926 as the second week in February to mark the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.
Woodson said he hoped the week could one day be eliminated — when black history would become fundamental to American history.
Freeman notes there is no "white history month," and says the only way to get rid of racism is to "stop talking about it."
The actor says he believes the labels "black" and "white" are an obstacle to beating racism.
"I am going to stop calling you a white man and I'm going to ask you to stop calling me a black man," Freeman says.
Freeman received Oscar nominations for his roles in 1987's "Street Smart," 1989's "Driving Miss Daisy" and 1994's "The Shawshank Redemption." He finally won earlier this year for "Million Dollar Baby."

On topic, Freeman is 100% right. Racism can no longer be solved by quotas. Instead, we simply need to dedicate ourselves to forgetting that race exists.

What Freeman is saying,is something I have always said.
There are award shows dedicated to black people (the MOBOs),there are magazines dedicated to black people & there are tv shows dedicated to black people.
How is that not self segregation,and racist?
If there were te same things dedicated to only whites,there would be a huge uproar,not only from the coloured community,but from the politicians & other PC avengers.
Being proud of ones heritage is wonderful,but such blatant in your face self segregation is only gonna stir up more racism from those idiots who still hate anyone not white,but also can cause negative feelings from people who are normally very cool about these sorta things!
If we all are sposed to be equal,lets not have some more equal than others!
I have known quite a few black guys who feel the same way Freeman does,as they feel it draws unnessesary attention to them.
That said,I'd like Elisas opinions on this!

We should have it in December.

Two students in eastern Iowa have been suspended from a public high school for handing out leaflets on campus implying that February's Black History Month designation and establishment of the NAACP are , racist. The principal of East High School in Waterloo, Mary Meier, said the fliers did not contain threats, but were inappropriate. The students involved in what is being described as a "fiasco" said they wanted to make a point. "I don't like it when black guys come up to you and call you honkey because you're white and you can't say nothing back to them, otherwise you'll get kicked out of school," one of them told KWWL-TV. School officials have planned a series of diversity events on campus to nip this racist seed in the bud, including study tables explaining why questioning the racial double-standard in modern education is deemed "hate talk."
