Another season has started, and many a prediction has been made. But we've still got over 160 games to go in a monster of a season. One thing that has become clear over he last few years is that it doesn't matter how big the payroll is, if a team plays well enough to make the post season, it can win the World Series.

So, fuck the Yankees! They have their own thread where their elitist love-monkeys can kiss the dirt they walk on.

For everyone else, let's talk about baseball.

By some miracle, FSN actually carried the Tigers' opening game, so I got to watch the beginning of what will probably be another 71-91 season. Reading the paper today, I have to ask what the fuck everyone in Detroit is smoking, because that's some good shit. Sure, Detroit had A+ pitching yesterday, but Inge made an error (yes, it was an error, not a base hit, the score card is wrong) that would have cost Detroit the game had they actually been playing a good team. That's not to say the Royals won't be a good team this year, but I'm being realistic. Shelton made a play at first that I never thought he would ever be capable of making, creating a double play to make life easy on Rogers, who got the next batter for the third out, but what are the chances he can do that next time?

But Shelton wasn't done. He followed that play up with consecutive solo line home runs, one down the right field line, and the other down the left field line. However, even with Guillen adding a home run of his own, the Tigers should have lost this game 1-0 at best. They could not hit with runners in scoring position, a common problem last year, with almost the same line-up.

So, when I say don't expect the Tigers to challenge the White Sox and Indians, that doesn't mean they won't, that just means that they were swinging for the fences all game yesterday, just like they always have, and it's going to take a miracle for them to start playing ball the right way.

If Leyland can get through to these players, the Tigers could give any team a run for its money. However, I think Dombrowski is going to have to move some players off of this roster by the deadline if he wants to have any hopes of competing NEXT year. I have a feeling there are going to be some very disgruntled high-priced players in Detroit this year, because I just don't see Leyland allowing this team to get away with crap like that every game.

That is, I hope he doesn't.

OK, that's my Tigers season preview.

Please, don't let me do all the posting on this thread. It really won't be that interesting to just talk about the Tigers all season.

I'm thinking 3rd place is realistic for the Tigers. But, then again, I placed the Indians 3rd last year behind the White Sox and Twins. So who knows - Detroit could be as good as 2nd or as bad as 4th (thank God for the Royals, eh?).

Out in the AL West, I'm still seeing a two team race between the Angels and A's. The Rangers will play spoiler and the Mariners will be good for a chuckle or two, but the division belongs to Oakland's pitching or Anaheim's seemingly complete team. I'm still picking Anaheim and thinking that Oakland will trade Zito in July, probably to an NL contender.

I like what the Angels have put together over the last few years. I think Dombrowski is trying to do the same thing with the Tigers, but while the pitching should be there this year and next and for many years to come, the Tigers have too many of the same type of hitter, and that's going to kill them again this year.

How about the BoSox? What's your take on them, Joe?

I like the Red Sox' chances (no WAY!!!). The defense and bullpen, two major trouble spots last year, looks to be shored up. The starting pitching can be as dominant as any other starting five (and I can't wait to see a staff of Schilling, Beckett, Papelbon, Clement, and Lester as soon as this summer or as late as 2007). While the offense may not score as many runs as the past couple of years, they'll still be competitive with the best 3-4 punch in the AL. Wily Mo will spell Nixon and provide another solid bat in the line-up. Lowell will improve over last season. and Coco...what can I say about our new infielder? Comparable numbers to Damon, better defense (did anyone see his catch yesterday? w00t!!!), and SIX years younger!

The AL East is a tough three-team division, but Toronto and New York have enough question marks to make this season interesting.

The BoSox stole Coco Crisp from Cleveland. I think the trade will come back to haunt Indians, especially if Leyland can make something of the Tigers' line-up that can compliment the pitching.

I just don't get that trade. I hope the BoSox give the Yankees hell this year.

Andy Marte. There's no reason, aside from the injury, to believe that he's not that good - I think he'll be up from Triple-A the moment Aaron Boone starts slumping. Cleveland seems to have a solid plan in place to compete for yers to come - they lock up their young talent (Victor Martinez and Grady Sizemore immediately come to mind) for years and are careful about what free agents they sign to compliment their youth. I'd like to pick the Indians to win the AL Central, but that Chicago pitching is insane!

I dunno if Schilling and Clement will still be around in 2007(though for two entirely different reasons). Boston has restocked their rotation quite nicely for the future, though, as Peter Gammons reminds us all constantly.

Not really. Cleveland already had a centerfielder(a better one) in Grady Sizemore, so Crisp was playing left, a position where his offensive numbers were far less impressive. The main guy Cleveland got in return, Andy Marte(originally from Atlanta in the Renteria trade), is an excellent all-around third base prospect, and will probably also be a better player than Crisp. So, not only did they trade a guy they didn't need, but they got one of the best prospects in baseball in return. Crisp is a nice player, but he's not a star. Cleveland GM Mark Shapiro was the real theif in this one, I think.

That being said, Boston made some shrewd moves this offseason. They got Hee-Seop Choi and Wily Mo Pena for peanuts(I'm not an Arroyo fan). Choi could be another Ortiz breakout candidate: he has similar skills, and, like Ortiz, was a minor league masher who wasn't ever really given a chance to shine. Of course, Ortiz's transformation in Boston was hardly a predictable one. As for Pena, he may never learn the strike zone, but he's extremely talented and could end up being Nixon's replacement sooner rather than later.

I thought Schilling had an option for 2007 that automatically vested. I could be wrong. I don't see Clement being moved too easily over the life of his contract. Could happen, might not. Still, the idea of a starting three of Beckett, Papelbon, and Lester is definitely appealing. Maybe throw DiNardo in there for a second lefty.

I think both teams got what they wanted in the Crisp/Marte trade, without even mentioning Shoppach, Bard, and the other incidental players. The Sox needed this trade to get the heat off for the whole Damon debacle - they were definitely the losers in the court of public opinion. And Cleveland got one of the best prospects in the game, a guy who could probably fill in at any time.

(And I agree with the rest of Animalman's post.)

You miss my point. In Comerica Park, those probably would not have been homeruns. The way some people are talking about the win, the Tigers could compete for the division if they play like this every game. The fact is, had those three solo shots fallen into outfield gloves inside of the stands, the Tigers would have lost 1-0 because they could not do anything when they did have runners on base and/or in scoring position. That's where teams need to get the job done. I just don't see this line-up doing that.

Yeah, there needs to be a lot more to a good baseball team than just homeruns. Homeruns are cool and everyone loves them, but the team really needs to focus on the fundamentals.

Something the Tigers line-up has lacked for far too long. I really hope Leyland has it in him to roll over these morons and get this team playing the right way by the deadline. And if he can't get through to them, then I hope Dombrowski is willing to swallow his pride and do what he does best, trade for pitching prospects.

Schilling has a mutual option for 2007, but as I said, if he's not in Boston, I'd expect it to be for a different reason than Clement. He turns 40 in November. If yesterday was indicative of the kind of season he'll have all year, he might stick around. If injuries creep up again(and my personal opinion is that they will), who knows.

When I said that Shapiro was the "real thief", I probably should have indicated that I meant if there was one. I do think the trade will benefit both teams. If Crisp hits like he did last year, he'll be valuable in center.

If by "fundamentals" you mean "pitching", then yes, I agree. However, the belief commonly held by baseball purists that old school tactics like the bunt, the hit and run, and stealing is more effective than the mighty swing style of hitting of current day sluggers is not supported by the facts. Four of the top five homerun hitting teams in the AL last year were also in the top five in runs scored. The team that wasn't, ironically, was the White Sox, who won the World Series thanks in no small part to their pitching, which is terrific(and has little to do with with whether or not hitters "swing for the fences", as Penwing puts it).

I meant all of those things. You need to be able to play small ball when the big ball isn't working out for you. Pitching is, of course, the most important because if no one on the other team can get a hit you have all day to make your own plays.

I'm guessing your basing this statment on Dombrowski trading for Jeremy Bonderman? Because I can't recall any good ones. I guess he did trade for Brad Penny with the Marlins back in '99.

I don't know if the Tigers have much in the way of trade bait. They have a few bad contracts, mostly on aging, injury-riddled guys. Developing pitching from within may be their only safe bet. A rotation of Bonderman, Verlander and Zumaya wouldn't be too shabby.

Where will Roger Clemens go?

He was last seen a the Rangers/BoSox game, watching Shilling pitch. Some think he was hoping Shilling would get bombed so that the BoSox would ante up and Houston would match to keep him. Others think he wants a shot at winning the World Series with his first team. Then there are those who think he will sign with Texas. Of course, the best bet is that he's just taking some time off to decide if he wants to pitch another season for Houston or if he really can live without playing baseball.

So, Houston, Boston, Texas, New York (no rumor for a big name is complete without those who think he'll go back to the Yankees, no one just walks away from the Yankees ), or retirement. What will it be?

My opinion on this has yet to change. Houston or retirement. He's said that he has to be able to spend time with his family during his offdays(which would seem to eliminate the Red Sox and Yankees), but he also wants to win(which would seem to eliminate the Rangers).

I predict the Tigers of Detroit will suck worse than last year. 50 wins at best.

Predict all you want. The Yankees won't win the World Series of 2006. That's my prediction.

So, I'm happy, but I'm not jumping for joy. Today, the Tigers did exactly what they are supposed to do to KC. They made them look like little leagers (radio quote). Well, to be more specific, Bondo made them look like little leaguers. I wish I could have seen this game because Bondo put on a real show with 8 strike outs. And Pudge looked like his old self going five for five. The Tigers beat the crap out of bad pitching, and now they go into Texas with some confidence.

It's a good start to the season. If they can split the four game series with Texas, that will take a lot of preasure off of Bondo at the home opener against the White Sox.

Whoa. Just flipped on WGN and found the Sox down to Cleveland 4-3 in the top of the 11th.

Well known fact: There is such a thing as good baseball without the Yankees on the field.

If I'm the one with the inferiority complex, then why are you the one constantly obsessing over my posts?
