The Washington Post reports today on Oprah Winfrey's latest "giveaway" to one of her studio audiences. In the past she has lavished automobiles and diamond watches, but she called this her "favorite giveaway ever." This one placed a $1,000 debit card in the hands of each audience member, but there was a catch

The $1,000, she told them, will be doled out in the form of debit cards, and recipients must spend all of their money on a charity of choice. What she was actually giving them, Oprah said with all the patronization of a woman whose financial worth has been put at $1.5 billion, is "the best feeling in the world."

"I can honestly say that every gift I've ever given has brought at least as much happiness to me as it has to the person I've given it to," Oprah added, with all the complacency of a woman who owns three homes, including a $50 million estate in California.

"That's the feeling I want to pass on to you. I want you to have that feeling this season," she said.

    But wait, there's more.

"To document your good deeds, because I want to make sure you document your good deeds," Oprah said, working hard to keep up their spirits, "we are lending everybody in this audience our favorite Sony DVD Handycam.

LENDING a Handycam? Couldn't that at least be the consolation prize for being the vessels for someone else's charitable deeds?

Others got to walk away with Pontiacs or iPods; these ladies get to serve as Oprah's unpaid camera crew.

I don't see how this deserves the thread title. And while it doesn't compare to a car, being given "money" to donate to the charity of one's choice ain't bad at all.

Does the legalization of marijuana count as a charitable cause? Because then I'm all for it!

in g-man's eyes spending like $50,000 and enlisting people to spread it to charitable causes is bad?

I think the crux is if Oprah really wanted to give to charity, she could've just given the money herself. These audience people got jack squat compared to other audience members. Good feelings don't put food on the table!

There's also the fact that Oprah essentially turned her audience into some sort of upaid camera crew, telling them to go out, film themselves giving away the money, and then return the loaner cameras to Oprah...presumably so Oprah can do a followup show about how "wonderful" she was to send a bunch of lower middle class housefraus out to spread the word of HER generosity.

She thinks this is a "reward"?

I think all Oprah did there with this latest stunt of hers is make a fool out of herself. If I were an audience member that day, I'd have said, " You keep the fucking cam and give the money to a charity yourself, bitch, because I ain't no Goddamm errand boy!"

That was not meant to sound at all gay, it was a Doctor Who reference.

Never mind, I ought to go clean litterboxes or do something productive, anyway.

these women are taping themselves. meaning oprah is offering the chance to be on her show. the follow-up interviews she does is these ladies 15 minutes of fame talking about the charities they chose.
these women get on national tv, and about $50,000 is given to charities.

this you oppose?

New York Daily News:

Oprah Winfrey is firing back at critics of her decision to build a $40 million school complex in South Africa - saying she didn't build it in the U.S. because inner-city kids here don't appreciate the value of a free education.

Interesting. I think it took some guts for Oprah to say that.

Not only that, but can you imagine how badly vandalized a school she might build in a US city would get?

I, too, feel she chose wisely deciding to build the school in South Africa.

Ferfucksake, its her money and she can do whatever the fuck she wants with it.
Its not like she asked the audience members to give $1000 of their own money to charity!

If the audience didnt wanna do it they could always say no!
