 Quote:
NFL security confiscated a video camera and its tape from a New England Patriots employee on the team's sideline during Sunday's game against the Jets in a suspected spying incident, sources said.

The camera and its tape were placed in a sealed box and forwarded to the league office for investigation, the sources said.

"The rule is that no video recording devices of any kind are permitted to be in use in the coaches' booth, on the field, or in the locker room during the game," the league said in a statement from spokesman Greg Aiello. "Clubs have specifically been reminded in the past that the videotaping of an opponent's offensive or defensive signals on the sidelines is prohibited.

"We are looking into whether the Patriots violated this rule."

The Patriots' cameraman was suspected of aiming his camera at the Jets' defensive coaches who were sending signals to their unit on the field, the sources said. The league also is investigating some radio frequency issues that occurred during the game.

The league's competition committee could conduct a conference call about the incident, which violates NFL policy, and ultimately recommend a penalty that could cost the Patriots a future draft pick or picks if it verifies that the team was spying on the Jets.

It's not their first time.

• Chris Mortensen says the Pats could lose future draft picks if the allegations prove true. Listen
"It's not their first time," a member of the committee, who did not wish to be identified, said.

In fact, Green Bay Packers president Bob Harlan confirmed a similar incident that occurred when the Patriots played at Lambeau Field last Nov. 19. The same cameraman who was questioned by NFL security on Sunday was also the one whom the Packers removed from the sideline and escorted from the field during their 2006 game, according to Packers security official Doug Collins.

"From what I can remember, he had quite a fit when we took him out," Harlan said. "We had gotten word before the game that they [the Patriots] did this sort of thing, so we were looking for it."

A Jets official declined comment Monday, directing an inquiry to the league office. The Patriots also did not have immediate comment.

"With anything along those lines, those are all league-related matters, and anything that deals with an issue like this or anything on a team-by-team basis, those all go to the league," coach Eric Mangini said in his news conference Monday.

New England cornerback Ellis Hobbs said he was unaware of the controversy, and unwilling to believe his team had cheated.

"We put too many hours in as individuals and a team to have to go out and cheat," he said. "If it's true, obviously, we're in the wrong. But I'm standing behind my team, my coaches. I don't think we do that stuff."

They're just showing their Patriotism! Dubya and Cheney will support this surveillance and overturn any NFL sanctions. If the Patriots are punished, the TERRORISTS WIN! \:\(

I think a fine and suspension should have been enough. There's no proof the Pats benefited from their actions. For all we know this is the first time they've done it.

Saw Brett Favre in a press conference. He confirmed that the Patriots could benefit from their actions but he added that it'd be pretty obvious to see the offensive coaches watching the defensive signals being sent in if they did. Then they'd have to figure out what play to run to counter it and send in the appropiate personnel. You'd eat up a lot of clock doing all that. Probably get his with a delay of game penalty more than once.

well, the game certainly played out as if the pats knew every weakness the jets had in every play.

in fact, now that i think of it, i think every team last year was doing the same thing against the jets.

this is bullshit

I think everyone knows the Jets weaknesses. The fact that they suck isn't exactly a secret.

"I apologize"- Belichick.

"For what coach, cheating?" -reporter.

"I don't want to talk about. I'm moving on with my life."-Belichick.

What an asshole.

honest question:

so, retracting decisions is a nearly unthinkable act in sports. i get that. they can't just say barry bonds never existed, even if he were caught injecting tomorrow. even pete ross, the sinniest of sports sinners, didn't have his stats taken away.

and granted, its more than likely (and nearly a certainty) that the pats would have won, anyway.

but in a case like this, where a team is proven to have cheated literally hours after a win... do you think a fine is a fair-enough punishment? or do you think that the game should be forfeited?

Games have been taken away in college more than once. I'd be tempted to do it here, but probably wouldn't pull the trigger on it.

In another article, one of Belichick's old players all but admitted that it was done before...

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-nflspying-fauria&prov=ap&type=lgns

I also read somewhere that something similar happened against Green Bay years ago, and that Jacksonville had "mysterious" problems with their headsets during a playoff game in the past, too. Can't find the article, though.

In this link, Detroit and Green Bay claim to have seen this before...

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=txpatriotsvideo&prov=st&type=lgns

I would take every pick from next year's draft and bench Belichick for a few games at the least...

my personal feeling is that the game should be forfeit, even when doing my best to pretend the jets are not the team that would benefit from sucha deciion.

the cheatriots losing a first round draft pick just doesn't seem like all that much of a damaging knock, as the pats have the dynasty perk of never having to rely on the draft. and financial fines in any professional sport are always a joke. million dollar pockets aren't burned by thousand dollar expenses.

getting caught cheating in a specific game, with noted proof several hours afterward? that shouldn't be a victory. and having that W changed to a L is a powerful reminder to not cheat again.

I compare this to stealing signs in baseball. Everyone does it but it isn't always caught. There's just no way to prove that the Patriots actually benefited from their actions so IMO you can't forfeit the game. If the Jets lost only 1 game and that was to the Patriots that's one thing. But that isn't the case. I remember when the Jets won a game against the Seahawks when Vinny Testaverde did a goal line plunge to score a TD. Replays showed he didn't make it but the refs gave it to him, later saying that they mistook his helmet for the ball. Incredibly lame excuse but that's what they said. But the game was done and the Seahawks were eliminated from the playoffs and coach Dennis Erickson lost his job. But the game was over. You live with the result. That's what we have here.

I do think Belichik should be suspended and anyone involved should be fined and/or suspended. Taking a draft pick away does't do a lot to the Patriots because they have two first round picks and three third rounders. Now their second and their first third rounder go up a pick. I'm betting the commisioner knew this too when he made his decision. Suspend Belichik for a month and be done with it.
