Good grief. It's an endless flood of GOP sexual hypocrites. In Spokane, an alleged extortion attempt that involves a conservative (and very anti-gay) state legislator and a male escort. The story just reeks of the usual factors -- the closet, self-loathing, and poor choice of rent boy. I'm sure more facts are forthcoming that will "clear up matters."

Alleged extortion of legislator probed

An alleged extortion attempt involving a state lawmaker and a reputed male prostitute is under investigation by Spokane police.

Details surrounding the case remained sketchy Sunday, but authorities confirmed that it involves two-term state Rep. Richard Curtis, a Republican from the small southwest Washington town of La Center, and that there was some type of confrontation last week at Davenport Tower. The identity of the alleged extortionist was unavailable, though police confirm he is a reputed prostitute.

No arrests had been made as of Friday, said Spokane Police spokeswoman Jennifer DeRuwe.

“I know that detectives have been working the case all weekend,” DeRuwe said. “Once the case is complete, we anticipate sending the case to the prosecutor’s office for a charging decision.”

Attempts to reach Curtis by phone and by e-mail were unsuccessful Sunday afternoon and evening. A message on the home phone number listed in legislative directories said the line could not currently receive calls.

It was unclear Sunday what types of extortion demands allegedly were being made. Also unclear is the nature of the relationship between Curtis and the reputed prostitute.

State GOP lawmakers were in Spokane Wednesday through Friday for a retreat to discuss the upcoming legislative session, said Rep. Mike Armstrong, R-Wenatchee.

He said most who attended the meeting stayed at the Red Lion Hotel at the Park. He said he visited with Curtis “a number of times” at the Red Lion and assumed he was staying there too.

“I didn’t know of anyone who stayed at the Davenport,” Armstrong said. “My first thought is that it must be a mistake.”

Rep. Lynn Schindler, R-Spokane, said she sat next to Curtis during one of the events. She also said she had not heard about the alleged crime.

“It doesn’t fit the profile of the person I know,” she said. “That kind of surprises me from his dealings with me.”

Elected to the state House of Representatives in 2004, Curtis has voted like a fiscal and social conservative. This spring, he voted against domestic partnerships for gay and lesbian couples. Last year, he opposed a gay rights bill that banned discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

As a member of the state gambling commission, Curtis has criticized gambling. He has opposed using state dollars to provide health care for illegal immigrant children, saying citizens and legal residents should come first.

He has earned generally low marks from Washington Conservation Voters, the abortion rights group NARAL and the AFL-CIO. The National Federation of Independent Business, a small-business group, gives him a perfect score.

Curtis’s online legislative biography says he owns a business that “provides instruction for advanced cardiac life support” at a Vancouver, Wash. hospital. It also says he is a fire captain and paramedic for the Vancouver Fire Department. A man who answered the phone at the department Sunday, however, said Curtis is no longer employed there.

The biography says he is an Air Force veteran and refers to him as a husband, father and former La Center city councilman. He is from New Mexico and moved to southwest Washington 11 years ago, the biography says.

Yeah, you just don't see a headline like that every day. The only thing missing is that the cross-dressing lawmaker is an anti-gay Republican and the tryst was with a man.

Cross-dressing state lawmaker blackmailed following late night tryst

SPOKANE -- State Representative Richard Curtis says he's not gay, but police reports and court records indicate the Republican lawmaker from southwestern Washington dressed up in women's lingerie and met a Medical Lake man in a local erotic video store which led to consensual sex at a downtown hotel and a threat to expose Curtis' activities publicly.

A search warrant unsealed Tuesday morning disclosed that State Representative Richard Curtis (R - La Center) had sex in his room at the Davenport Tower with a man identified as Cody Castagna, 26, of Medical Lake, who he met at the Hollywood Erotic Boutique on October 26th.

Curtis, according to a search warrant unsealed Tuesday, went to the Hollywood Erotic Boutique on East Sprague on October 26th at approximately 12:45 a.m. The store clerk, who had talked with Curtis, referred to him as "The Cross-Dresser" and said that during their conversations he confirmed he was gay and was married with children at home.

During his visit to the video store Curtis was observed wearing women's lingerie while receiving oral sex from an unidentified man in one of the movie viewing booths inside the store.

Afterward he met Cody Castagna, and they talked about getting together at Curtis' hotel room to have sex. Curtis left Castagna his cellphone number and went to Northern Quest Casino and receiving a call from him around 3 a.m., and planned to get together at the hotel a short while later.

The two met at the Davenport Tower around 3:34 a.m. and police reports confirm Curtis and Castagna had anal intercourse after which Curtis fell asleep. Castagna, according to court records, then allegedly took Curtis' wallet out of his jacket pocket and left the room.

Around 7 a.m. he called Curtis and told him he knew he was a member of the Washington State House of Representatives and was married, that he had taken pictures of Curtis with a camera on his cellphone and he offered to return the wallet in exchange for $1,000. In police reports it is claimed that Curtis offered Castagna that sum of money in exchange for having unprotected anal intercourse.

Curtis, during an interview with a Spokane detective, claimed that he gave Castagna $100 for "gas money" and insisted that the money was not payment for sex. During that phone conversation he claimed he only had $200 and left the money in an envelope at the front desk at the Davenport Tower for Castagna in exchange for the return of his wallet.

The attempt to get his wallet back proved unsuccessful as Castagna called Curtis back later on the 26th and demanded the remaining $800 from him. Unbeknownst to Castagna at the time Curtis had already contacted Spokane police and a detective was present with Curtis when Castagna called again.

When he contacted police, Curtis told detectives he wanted to keep the incident quiet and didn't want to press charges against Castagna and that all he wanted was his wallet back.

During the call Castagna not only demanded $800 for the return of Curtis' wallet but also said the money would buy his silence, implying that without the money he would expose Curtis' gay lifestyle to his wife. Curtis admitted to police that if details of the incident became public he would have to tell his wife and would need to hire a divorce attorney.

Following the phone call arranging for the return of the wallet police officers set up surveillance of the location where Curtis' billfold was to be dropped and subsequently recovered it.

Castagna offered a completely different view of the events that happened on October 26th in several interviews with detectives. Castagna claimed that Curtis had met him at the Hollywood Erotic Boutique and later at Curtis' hotel room offered him $1,000 in exchange for sex, adding that while he was in Curtis' room at the Davenport Tower Curtis rented two XXX-rated gay movies for the two to watch. After the two had sex, Castagna claimed that Curtis gave him his wallet as collateral to hold on to until he gave him the remainder of the $1,000.

He also admitted to detectives he had threatening to publicly expose Curtis to his wife.

According to his personal page on MySpace.com early Tuesday morning, Castagna claims he's a 26-year-old Wyoming native now living in Medical Lake and working locally as a server. His MySpace page has since been set to private.

The Columbian newspaper in southwestern Washington where Rep. Curtis lives confirmed that Castagna has faced multiple charges in juvenile court in Spokane and King County involving assault, theft, burglary and malicious mischief and that in 2001 he pled guilty to a forgery charge as an adult and was sentenced to two months in jail followed by a year in community custody.

Aside from his statements to the police, Rep. Curtis' only public statement about the incident on October 26th was to The Columbian. He told the newspaper Monday he did not solicit anyone for sex, that he is not gay and that he got into this mess just trying to help someone out.

You should read "World of Null-A", "Players of Null-A" and "Null-A Three" by Alfred Elton van Vogt. It's a trilogy of science fiction novels which are (in part) about why man must not limit himself with Aristotelian logic, and instead use general semantics.

(It's also about the evils of totalitarianism and virtues of democracy, so even if you don't care for the science you may like the books anyway. )

No.

It does not.

I'm a registered Democrat.

I'm VERY much out of the closet.

My entire family knows I am gay.

Everyone else I am close to knows, too.

It seems there is an abundance of self hating, ultra closeted gay republicans.

I had a hunch there was..

pretty cool to see one of my pet theories come to be proven correct.

Kinda sad, too.

Too bad this guy isn't a Democrat. Then all the Dems out there would just call anyone who criticized the guy's actions a "homophobe", and re-elect him.

It must be great to belong to a party that has no standards.

Granted Sen Craig, Congressman Mark Foley, and this latest guy are hypocritical scumbags. But again, these closeted gay trysts wouldn't even be considered controversial if the offending person were a Democrat.

Actually, for those who can read, I just criticized pedophiles.

It's you and your fellow liberals who support pedophiles.

And re-elect them.

But you --of course!-- hold Republicans to a higher standard than you do yourselves.

the point is that all these anti-gay rightwingers are turning out to be gay. gerry studds is not representative of the modern democratic party and he is not held up as some great hero, however anti-gay republicans active currently and considered very respectable are coming out and being criminal while doing it.

Gerry Studds is also not criticized by the current Democratic leadership.

The same can be said of Democrats who smear the entire Republican party as a "culture of corruption" for their dealings with Abramoff, while ignoring that about a third of Abramoff's payola went to Democrats. And the way Democrats similarly are dismissive of financial indiscretions of Sen. Harry Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, among other Democrats in the current leadership.
Time and again, Democrats excuse their own, while demonizing not just the guilty Republicans, but misrepresentatively smearing all Republicans. Even when Democrats (like Studds) have more flagrantly violated the law. Without losing Democrat support. And still getting re-elected by their Democratic base.

Again, you miss the entire point.

The point isn't that this guy is gay. The point is that he's a consistently ANTI-GAY politician, passing Anti-Gay legislation, denouncing Homosexuals and in turn is going around dressing up like a woman, renting gay porn and spiriting himself off with gay guys for some gay sex.

I believe the word, is hypocrisy, although self-loathing might also fit.

But Wonder Boy, I know you're a reasonably intelligent guy and already know this.

but instead of saying, ANY politician who says one thing and does another, anybody who passes legislation against one group of people while engaging in those same activities that he himself denounces, any politician who sleeps with underage boys (since this is your favourite deflection issue) should be criticized for basically being a hypocritical, unethical, lying scumbag. But rather than do that, you just try to find a Democrat, even one from the bowels of history, to use as a deflection.

But no that's not enough, you then choose to try to deflect by using some weird logic about how if this were a Democrat everyone would call his denouncers homophobes.

NO, they wouldn't. No one is attacking his gayness. If someone was attacking and ridiculing his gayness in and of itself, then you'd be correct. People are attacking his HYPOCRISY. Learn the difference, dude.

Now of course if that Democrat was busy trying to pass anti-Gay legislation and denouncing gays and then going off to hotels and porn stores for fuck sessions with gay boytoys. Then if that were the case, he'd receive the same level of scorn. Again, it's about hypocrisy and self-loathing.

And man, I don't even know who Gerry Studds is. Because that happened, what? 20 years ago? Would it make you feel better if I denounce him too?

Ok....

Bad Gerry! Bad Gerry!

Stil, that isn't a defense of this blatant hypocrisy and just plain weirdness of all these men popping out like clockwork who hate gays and legislate against them but then get caught in some weird ass gay situations themselves. Sordid situations too, not healthy normal gay relationships. Because to them, gay=bad so for them their own homosexuality turns perverse and perverted. and like any lie, it is soon discovered.

I would think that the public will begin to see more to this pattern of self loathing gay republicans being caught having had gay sex....

they will start to see through anyone who preaches such anti gay legislation, and through the anti gay hate mongers such as ministers, lawmakers, etc...

maybe people will realize that he who condemns gays the loudest, is very likely to be gay and full of self hate - which would explain why these individuals hate gays who are out of the closet and not living a lie... because they themselves are too ashamed of their own nature to do so.

maybe the public will realize that the issue is hate, and to deeply question and challenge those who preach it.

Well, I can dream, can't I? \:\)

I think it's already happened.

Too to many of these anti-gay zealots have been exposed as being gay gay gay. And 5 will get you ten that thre'll be a more to come.

Now I want to get back to what Wonder Boy posted because honestly, upon further refelction, I fail to see what Gerry Studds, a pedophile has to do with being an anti-gay hypocrite? Besides the fact that both were gay of course...

I think it fits with his whole idea that this entire thread is about how bad it is to be a gay politician.

Being a gay politician sounds very tense. Very few politicians are out of the closet - the only one I can think of is Barney Frank.

These recent "outings " have made me ( and others ) realize just how many there just might be.

And I don't regard pedophiles as actually being gay, and the straight ones are not really hetero - they're just sick.

and what the anti - gay bigots don't want to hear is that, since heterosexuals outnumber homosexuals at least 10 to 1, that there are far more pedophiles in the hetero population, that there is far more instances of bestiliaty in the hetero population, that heteros have a high rate of divorce, spouse and child abuse, and, should those same anti gay bigots try to use the Bible against gays?

There are over 600 rules, laws, and taboos for heterosexuals in the bible..

and only one against homosexuality..

and now, it has been made abundantly clear...

...that the man who wrote that line in the Bible.. ( Let's not forget, men wrote the bible, God did not write it personally! ) .. was probably a closet case who had a crush on another guy.. but was ashamed to act on it.. and so, he put that line in there, just to be a dick. \:\)

I didn't miss the "point". I readily concede that, yes, a conservative who campaigns against the gay lifestyle and yet is secretly practicing it, is the textbook definition of a hypocrite.

However, I was focused more on Democrats as a whole who criticize this behavior in Republicans, and even 20 years later can't bring themselves to criticize Gerry Studds, Bill Clinton, and other Democrats who have engaged in sexually unethical behavior.

But rather than do that, you just try to find a Democrat, even one from the bowels of history, to use as a deflection.

All I've done is show that Democrats criticize Republicans for the same behavior (as they should), while giving a free pass to Democrats guilty of the same behavior. A hypocritical judgement on the part of Democrats.

Likewise, the way Clinton's indiscretions with Monica Lewinsky are rated by Democrats as "his personal life, and doesn't affect his job", whereas these same Democrats say Rudy Giuliani is unfit to be president for virtually the same behavior.

Because it's demonstrably true, in the examples I just gave. And it's not a deflection, it's the core point.

You can argue that Foley is more hypocritical than Studds. But both of them are guilty of the same unethical behavior. And in Studds' case, he's actually more guilty, because he had sex with a minor, and didn't wait till the kid was legal to have anal/gay sex with him.

NO, they wouldn't. No one is attacking his gayness. If someone was attacking and ridiculing his gayness in and of itself, then you'd be correct. People are attacking his HYPOCRISY. Learn the difference, dude.

I get that, as I explained.

But you are, again, ignoring my point. Of the larger hypocrisy of Democrats who excuse their own, while condemning Republicans for the same acts.

Like Clinton buddying up to gays while supporting the Defense of Marriage Act?

To fully capture the same hypocrisy, Clinton would have to be secretly gay, and supporting legislation that is in complete opposition to his own sexual preferences. But it's funny how Democrats always find a way to defend their own, while condemning Republicans for the exact same behavior.

Republicans (myself included) readily condemn Foley, Craig and this latest guy, when their hypocrisy is exposed. We disown them, and call for their removal.

Whereas, in the cases of Bill Clinton, Gerry Studds, Ted Kennedy, etc., Democrats defend the worst behavior of their leaders, and continue to re-elect them. Even as they demonize Republicans for the same actions.

You speak of hypocrisy of a few Republican office-holders who have been caught.

I speak of the hypocrisy of the entire Democrat party, right down to the grass roots.

Ok....

Bad Gerry!

You just excused Democrats for the same actions. A man courting sex with an underage boy (or girl) should be condemned. Not excused as you just did. And as rank-and-file Democrats nationwide do, while condemning Republicans for the exact same behavior.

Geez the GOP seems to be having so many of these sex scandals. I guess it's a natural place for self-loathing gays to go to though.

Report: Curtis admitted tryst

State Rep. Richard Curtis, R-La Center, admitted to having sex with a man he met at an adult video store in Spokane last week, according to a police report released Tuesday afternoon.

The police report offers a far different version of events from the brief account Curtis gave Monday to The Columbian, one that seems likely to threaten Curtis’ political future.

The police report contains an account of how Curtis allegedly donned women’s clothing, red stockings and a black sequined lingerie top before engaging in a sex act at the store. He then continued to wear them throughout the night under his clothing, the report says......

Well, that's that. At least he's admitting it rather than concocting some b.s. story that no one believes and then trying to sue the cops.

um... take it like a man.

Washington state Republican lawmaker resigns amid gay sex scandal
The Associated PressPublished: October 31, 2007

OLYMPIA, Washington: A Republican state legislator resigned Wednesday amid revelations that he had sex with a man he met at a pornographic video store while in Spokane on a party retreat.

The move comes days after state Rep. Richard Curtis insisted to his local newspaper that he was not gay and that sex was not involved in what he said was an extortion attempt by a man last week.

But in police reports, Curtis alleges he was being extorted by a man he had sex with in a Spokane hotel room. The other man contends Curtis reneged on a promise to pay $1,000 (€692) for sex.

A Republican successor will be chosen by county Republican leaders, and will serve until the 2008 election.

Curtis, 48, told police he was the victim of an extortion attempt by Cody Castagna at the posh Davenport Tower hotel on Oct. 26, search warrant documents said. Castagna, 26, told police that Curtis had agreed to pay him for sex, then reneged.
`
Curtis is married and has children, according to his legislative Web site. Elected to the state House of Representatives in 2004, he voted in 2005 and 2006 against a bill that granted civil rights protections to gays and lesbians, and in 2007 voted against a bill that created domestic partnerships for same-sex couples. Both measures eventually passed the Democratic-controlled state Legislature and are now state law.

Curtis was among state Republican lawmakers in Spokane Oct. 24-26 for a retreat to discuss the upcoming legislative session. He went to the Hollywood Erotic Boutique early on Oct. 26 and met Castagna, who accompanied him to the hotel, police documents said.

The two arrived at the hotel around 3:30 a.m. and had sex, after which Curtis fell asleep, according to documents released Tuesday.

Curtis alleged Castagna took his wallet and later offered to return it for $1,000 (€692). Curtis said he only had $200 (€138) and left an envelope with the money at the hotel desk, the documents said.

Police reports said Castagna allegedly called Curtis and demanded an additional $800 (€554), and threatened to expose Curtis. But Curtis had already contacted police, who listened to the call and then met with Castagna.

There have been no arrests in the case.

8 Men Claim Encounters With Craig

BOISE, Idaho —
Eight men say they either had sex with Sen. Larry Craig or were targets of sexual advances by the Idaho lawmaker at various times during his political career, a newspaper reported Sunday.

One of the men is the former escort whose allegations disgraced the Rev. Ted Haggard, former president of the National Association of Evangelicals, the Idaho Statesman reported.

The newspaper identified four men and reported details of the encounters they say involved Craig. It also reported the accounts of four other men who did not agree to be identified but who described sexual advances or encounters involving the conservative Republican, who opposes same-sex marriage and has a strong record against gay rights.

Craig pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct after being accused by an undercover officer of soliciting sex at the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport and later called a news conference to deny that he is gay.

The newspaper acknowledged that its report was not based on definitive evidence but said it also found no evidence to disprove the accounts of the four identified men. It said it reviewed the senator's travel records, which put him where the sex is alleged to have taken place, and did background checks on those making the allegations.

Craig and members of his staff declined to comment to the newspaper.

But in a statement e-mailed to The Associated Press on Sunday, the senator said the newspaper's report was "completely false" and he accused the paper of careless journalism.

"It is unfortunate that the Idaho Statesman has chosen to continue to lower itself to the standards of what can best be described as tabloid journalism," Craig said in the statement.

"Despite the fact the Idaho Statesman has decided to pursue its own agenda and print these falsehoods without any facts to back them up, I won't let this paper's attempt to malign my name stop me from continuing my work to serve the people of Idaho."

The report is the Statesman's latest on allegations about Craig's sexual background since his June arrest in an airport men's room sex sting operation was reported in late August.

Statesman Editor Vicki Gowler said the newspaper spent several months checking the backgrounds and details of the men's stories.

"We believe it's important for you to know what we've learned and to hear the men's own words," Gowler said.

Two of the identified men and one of the unidentified men told the newspaper they had sex with Craig.

One of the men identified in the report, Mike Jones, 50, described as a former male escort, was the focus of the sex scandal involving Haggard, the disgraced leader of Colorado's New Life Church.

Jones said Craig paid him $200 for sex in late 2004 or early 2005. The encounter took place at a studio apartment in downtown Denver, Jones said.

Jones told the Statesman that he did not recognize Craig until his arrest made the news. The newspaper reported that Jones went on the record after Craig appeared in a television news report in August to address the arrest and his future in politics.

Jones has written a book about his experience with Haggard and acknowledged to the Statesman that his allegation about Craig might help sales. A message left for Jones by The Associated Press through his publisher Sunday evening was not immediately returned.

Amid pressure from top GOP leaders in Washington, Craig announced his intent to resign from the Senate. He later changed his mind, deciding to finish out his term, which expires in January 2009. He is also appealing in Minnesota courts to have his guilty plea overturned.

The undercover police officer who arrested Craig said the senator moved his foot next to the officer's foot and tapped it in a way that indicated he wanted sex. He also alleged the senator sent a signal by swiping his hand under the divider between men's room stalls.

Craig has said the officer misconstrued those motions.

You have to wonder about a political party that has Stampy, Bart Simpson's ill behaved pet elephant, as it's mascot!
