Chmielewski, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer January 5, 2008 The fuzzy future of high-definition DVD came into sharper focus Friday after Warner Bros. said it would release movies for the home video market exclusively on the Blu-ray disc format.
The decision, announced on the eve of the influential Consumer Electronics Show, delivers a de facto knockout punch to the rival HD DVD format backed by Toshiba Corp. and others now supported by only two of Hollywood's six major movie studios.
It also averts a further costly format war that has been stymieing the growth of the next generation of DVD with promises of enhanced video images and digital audio to match the popularity of flat, big-screen television sets. For the first time, sales of movies on regular DVDs declined last year, jeopardizing a longtime and important source of profits for Hollywood. The studios hope the new, higher-quality format will spur consumers to restock their DVD shelves.
In addition to Warner Bros., studios supporting the Blu-ray format include News Corp.'s 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney Co., Sony Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Taken together, they represent about 70% of the home video market. HD DVD is supported by General Electric's NBC Universal, Viacom Inc.'s Paramount Pictures and the independent studio DreamWorks Animation.
"Expect HD DVD to die a quick death," said Richard Greenfield, an analyst with Pali Research in New York, in a research note Friday.
Late Friday, the HD DVD group canceled a news conference scheduled for Sunday at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. "We are currently discussing the potential impact of this announcement with the other HD DVD partner companies and evaluating next steps. We believe the consumer continues to benefit from HD DVD's commitment to quality and affordability," the group said in a statement.
The larger question, however, is how long even the winning high-definition DVD format may survive. Some analysts say the battle between Blu-ray and HD DVD may become irrelevant as high-speed Internet and on-demand video become the pipelines of movies into the home.
"I think the fat lady just sang," said Rob Enderle, principal analyst with Enderle Group in San Jose. "This gives Blu-ray a decisive lead. The question now is whether it is too little too late."
Enderle said consumers might have moved on to digital downloads to get movies rather than wait to buy them on next-generation DVDs. The next big chance to sell high-definition movie players won't be until next Christmas, he said. "By then, it may all be moot."
Warner Bros. had remained neutral as the rival technology camps spent millions to win over consumers. Each group engaged in aggressive price cutting and promotions this holiday season in an attempt to persuade consumers to take the high-definition DVD plunge.
But sales of these next-generation discs fell short of expectations, given the huge summer box office from popcorn movies, said Kevin Tsujihara, president of Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group. Nor, he added, did the high-definition DVD players keep pace with the sale of high-definition TVs.
"There's a window of opportunity here," Tsujihara said. "There are a number of high-definition television sets being purchased. The best time to sell one of these high-definition DVD players is when the consumer walks out the door with that television set. That window was beginning to close on us."
Warner Bros. even sought its own solution to the format war at the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show, proposing a high-definition disc that combined the Blu-ray and HD DVD formats. But Warner was the only studio to embrace the dual format, so it never reached stores.
Sony Corp.'s Blu-ray discs have had a 2-1 sales edge since the beginning of 2007, thanks to its exclusive studio deals and the sale of Sony PlayStation 3 game consoles that play films in that high-definition format.
That prompted the HD DVD camp to flash its cash to remain viable. It paid $150 million to Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation in August to secure exclusively the rights to such major movies as "Transformers" and "Shrek the Third" on HD DVD. Paramount had previously released movies in both high-definition formats.
"HD DVD had a lot of momentum in 2007 when they had their own defection of Paramount. That was a very big move," said J.P. Gownder, an analyst with Forrester Research in Cambridge, Mass. "Now, the balance of power shifts back to Blu-ray."
The Paramount deal reportedly sparked a furious courtship of Warner, which was the last of the major studios to support both high-definition DVD formats. Warner will begin releasing movies exclusively on Blu-ray in June.
Barry Meyer, chairman and chief executive of Warner Bros., flatly denied that the studio was offered a big check to choose the Blu-ray format.
"This was not a bidding contest between the two formats. This is a huge business for us," Meyer said. "We're the market leader globally. We're not going to make a strategic decision based on any kind of short-term financial gain."
Nonetheless, studios such as Warner are facing pressure to grow the nascent high-definition video business at a time when consumer spending on DVDs is declining.
And it's clear that the format war -- though benefiting consumers by driving down the price of high-definition DVD players -- has been confusing them too and keeping them from replacing their DVD players and their movie collection.
"Unfortunately, the loser here with the format war has been the consumer," Gownder said. "We found that 28% of people said the fact that there was a format war meant they weren't going to buy a high-definition DVD player. Blu Ray had the upper hand from the off.
More stores (both physical and online) were carrying Blu Ray discs than HD.
And despite the lower than expected sales, there are more PS3s owned by people than HD players, meaning more people own Blu Ray players, especially when you also factor in stand alone Blu Ray players as well.
Plus, despite predictions that Microsoft would help develop/push PC HD drives because it would benefit them with the whole X-Box 360 vs PS3 thing, Blu Ray got the jump on HD, and had not only Blu Ray drives out on the market, but Blu Ray burners as well!

Nah, I'm kidding. Like the article says, I'm pretty much waiting until this whole corporate-driven "format war" has ended completely. The common user couldn't care two twats about what's better Blu-Ray/HD-DVD. Everyone and their mother owns a normal DVD player, and are going to be hard-pressed to accept having to rebuild their DVD library.
But, also, like Pariah said, normal DVDs work in a PS3, as well...

Fact is, I still couldnt give two tosses about Blu Ray, even though I have a player.
Sony sent me a free copy of Casino Royale on Blu Ray, and yes it looks lovely, but not enough to justify paying nearly double the price of a DVD.
I have not bought a single Blu Ray disc yet, and still buy everything on DVD, even if its available on Blu Ray as well.
Oh, and with the PS3, there was actually a software upgrade last year that upgrades DVDs to near HD quality anyway!

Paramount and DreamWorks Animation, which makes the Shrek films, came out in support of HD DVD last summer, joining General Electric’s Universal Studios as the main backers of the Toshiba format.
Paramount is set to have a bumper 2008 with several likely blockbusters, including the latest instalment in the Indiana Jones franchise.
Paramount joining the Blu-ray camp would leave HD DVD likely to suffer the same fate as Sony’s now obsolete Betamax video technology, which lost out to VHS in a similar format war in the 1980s.
Warners decision last week to throw its weight behind Blu-ray saw it join Walt Disney, 20th Century Fox and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer as backers of the Sony format.
The Warners move gives Blu-ray about 70 per cent of Hollywood’s output, although the format’s grip on film content will increase further when Paramount comes aboard.
It is unclear whether DreamWorks Animation has the same get-out clause in its contract with the HD DVD camp.
However, Paramount and DreamWorks have a close relationship, with Paramount distributing DreamWorks Animation films. The two companies also signed their HD DVD contracts at the same time. Meanwhile, Universal has declined to comment on its next-generation DVD plans since the Warners move.
Sir Howard Stringer, chief executive of Sony, on Monday held out an olive branch, saying the company would be “open to dialogue” with the HD DVD camp to “grow the market”. The move came as new figures showed that Blu-ray had opened up a decisive lead over the rival home entertainment format.
Sir Howard said: “We are not going to push people around. We’ll talk to anyone ... we have a lot of work to do to grow the market. We’ll be systematic and open to dialogue at all times.”
He added that Sony still had “a lot of work” to do to get Blu-ray “widely accepted” among American consumers.
“With Warner’s support you saw billboards going up in different places and you saw television commercials getting more and more sophisticated and that’s what we’ll continue doing,” said Sir Howard. _______________

Microsoft Would Consider Blu-ray for XboxIf HD DVD does indeed fail and Blu-ray is officially crowned the winner of the format war, a Microsoft exec has conceded that MS would consider offering a Blu-ray player for Xbox 360.
With the recent Warner Bros. announcement that the studio will exclusively support Blu-ray over HD DVD, many industry watchers suspect that the format war is nearing its end with Blu-ray victorious. HD DVD player sales for the Xbox 360 would seem likely to dry up as a result, but in the event of a final Blu-ray victory, would Microsoft support Sony's format?
According to Albert Penello, group marketing manager for Xbox, Microsoft will "consider" the option. "It should be consumer choice; and if that's the way they vote, that's something we'll have to consider," he told Reuters .
Penello added, however, that he doesn't think Warner's decision really affects the Xbox 360 much at all. "I fundamentally don't think ... this has a significant impact on Xbox 360 versus (Sony's) PlayStation 3," he said, adding, "With the PlayStation 2, DVD was a big part in the beginning, but over time, people were not buying it as a DVD player after first year or two."
Penello isn't totally convinced that HD DVD has lost either, despite Warner's decision. "You can't say it's not a bummer, not a setback, but I've seen this battle declared over so many times," he noted. "I want consumers to have a voice in this and I think there are a lot of consumers who bought HD DVD who are going to have a say in how this shakes out."

Do you even know what the hell you're talking about? It sure doesn't sound like it. My main beef with Blu-Ray is on account of that whole Profile 1.0, profile 1.1, profile 2.0 bullshit. Where HD-DVD can do cool interactive shit like picture in picture and online connectivity right off the bat, with Blu-Ray, you need a HARDWARE upgrade, as opposed to a firmware one (as is the case with minor tweaks on the HD-DVD's) to be able to do the same wih Blu. With the Batman Begins, 300, and Transformers discs, the difference is glaring. On 300, they didn't even bother to do the whole PiP comparison of finished film with the blue screen/commentary feature BECAUSE SOME OF THEIR PLAYERS ARE UNABLE TO DO THIS and i'm guessing they didn't want it to be glaringly apparent with the format war still raging. The trade off with Blu was that you get your docu's and featurettes in full HD  Yeah, like you're going to impress people with that fact over interactivity that you couldn't get with standard DVD. Another factor is sound. Again, you need a more expensive, newer gen 1.2 or 2.0 player to get Full HD sound. Going in to Best Buy and paying 350.00 (or even 399.00) will only still get you a 1.0 player. With that same cash, you'd get a HD-DVd with all the HD sound, all the interactivity and an ethernet port. The war may be over but the better format definately lost. People keep saying that Blu is the potentially better format. But as I said, that will require a HARDWARE upgrade. In other words, ANOTHER BLU-RAY PLAYER! What this means is that most people will be stuck with 300 or Batman Begins (eventually) that can't do the whole cool interactive thing.
So it's not a question of being pissed at my hardware. It's knowing that now High Def DVD's will be coming out that are just a step above (barely) over standard dVD rather than getting some of the excellent HD-DVD's that were coming out regularly with killer features.
I really don't give a fuck if my extras are in standard Def, which is the only extra Blu offers. HD-DVD could easily have added a 2nd disc if it started to matter too much to people. Which isn't unheard of BTW. So that whole extra capacity argument is sorta baloney as well. As if the studios were going to go apeshit over the fact that they could add hours and hours more of documentary content on a single disc. Would they really pony up the cash to produce it, anyways?

I just think, as with the PS3, it was a case of there being more Joe Sixpacks armed with nothing more than brand identification making their choice for them.
It sure didn't help that Toshiba (and Microsoft) just sat back and assumed that having the better product was enough to compete with Sony's marketing juggernaut.

MiniDiscs were just stupid and what the fugg is an Atari Jaguar?? I did see Laserdisc mentioned here derisively and with that i do take issue with. I did have a laserdisc player and I was happy with it for over 7 good years. Which is a pretty decent life all things considered. Especially when you factor in that the reason i bought it in the 1st place was because I became aware of widescreen and stupid VHS didn't offer it in any way shape or form. So when DVD eventually came out, i was happy to jump on that but I certainly didn't feel cheated. After all, i did spend almost a decade enjoying digital widescreen movies when most everyone was still obliviously watching grainy pan and scan tapes. It was just amusing to hear all the idiot "why does the picture have black bars" questions when the VHS'ers finally did upgrade..

The future seems to be HD downloads anyways. Which is probably why Microsoft didn't go to bat for HD-DVD apart from making a HD-DVD add on for the 360.
I think they see their future selling HD films on X-Box Live.
