NYT reports on its front page: BREAKING NEWS 3:23 PM ET: Tim Russert Is Dead of a Heart Attack, His Family Says He was 58. MSNBC is now reporting the news that Russert collapsed and died at work at the NBC news bureau in Washington, DC this afternoon. He had just returned from a trip to Italy with his family. Tom Brokaw is sharing the tragic news and clearly broken up. How awful. "This news division will not be the same without his strong, clear voice." Brian Williams just tossed to Andrea Mitchell who is on now. I don't know how they are doing it. They are all so obviously devastated. I can't imagine having to stay composed and report on the loss of a friend. Brian Williams sums it up: "Even this coverage is being compiled by family members of a very sad family."

That's too bad. He was one of the few guys left in network news who seemed essentially fair and more interested in actual news than entertainment.

Russert seemed to me to be the only true journalist left on the air. He seemed to be a bit left leaning but he never let that interfere with his reporting or commentary. Also, like me, he's from Buffalo and a huge Bills fan. Could you imagine if they got Olbermann to replace him on Meet The Press...? I like K.O. but... His schtick gets old. The only choice I could see as being worse would be Chris Matthews. I'd like to see Andrea Mitchell host that show. She's a really good reporter and will ask the tough question without having that kind of "gotcha" feel that so many others do. He will be missed. Prayers and blessings to his family and close friends.
Oderint, dum metuant.

he seemed like a decent guy. 58 is young too -- and i honestly wouldn't have guesses he was even that old.

Meet the Press had been a show I tried to catch but for the last couple years it hasn't been very good. Sorry the man passed away at such a young age though.
Fair play!

The NBC staff is understandably shaken by this and tributes are fitting and in order, but it's a shame they're going to go thru 2 or 3 news cycles in wall to wall mourning on MSNBC.
As big a political guy as they repeatedly say Russert was, I don't think he'd appreciate it letting the news of the day fall by the wayside.

Despite the fact that I think Russert could be liberal-partisan at times, I did think he was a good journalist. As far as I could see, he was just as tough with Democrats he interviewed as he was with Republicans, despite his self-proclaimed liberal leanings.
Beyond that, he seemed like a sincere guy, and one who was good to his family. His death was very sudden, and at such a young age (just 13 years older than me!)
I normally feel cynicism when I hear reporters mourn another journalist, but in his case, I believe it was heartfelt by all I saw discuss his death, including Tom Brokaw, Gwen Ifill, and Brian Williams. It must be especially difficult going on the air at 6PM, having to report on the death of their close friend just a few hours after his death, which occurred about 3:30 PM.
I had a chance to see Tim Russert and Brian Williams live at the Republican Debate in Boca Raton, back in January of this year. They were both very personable and funny, before the cameras were rolling, talking to the audience and making with the jokes. So I got to see Russert's personality off-camera, however briefly.
I agree with almost everything THE Bastard said above, except unlike him, I think Olbermann is the worst excuse for a journalist I've ever seen. There is not the slightest feint at objectivity in what Olbermann says.

I´m not mocking, I just wanted to be clear on that detail.
I don´t get NBC news here, so this is the first time I read about this guy. My condolences.
