just saw this (super 8), and that description is actually pretty accurate. really good flick which had a very "richard donner" feel, in addition to the obvious spielberg stuff. just a dash of cloverfield thrown in (but not much, honest).
fun movie! much less about the monster and much more about the awkward 1970s life of a 12/13 year old
Would this be a good movie to take a 10 and 11 year old to? They just saw goonies for the first time last month. I was hoping this could be a good follow up for them.

i think it'd be fine. it might be a little loud, a little scary, and there's a few swears here and there. but it should be very comparable to the goonies. the bulk of the story is the kids; their interactions with one another, and their reaction to the events, dealing with parents, etc. it really is like the goonies or ET in many regards, at least when it comes to the kids.
it's not like a disconnected "alien takes over new york city" film, either. it has a very small-town 1970s vibe. like where everyone bikes to each others' house, parents have no knowledge of where kids are after dinner, and they always have these cool hangout locations, etc.
Here's hoping the movie is as good as the trailers.

I'm not a high-paid movie executive but I can't understand why they dropped the reference to "Mars" from the "John Carter" movie title. It makes for possibly the most boring and generic movie title ever.

This movie is based on a book written by the senior editor at Cracked, and it has motherfucking Kurgan in it.
It's also fucking insane.
Clancy Brown, too? I know Angus Scrimm's in there, and I caught Doug Jones in several scenes.
Clancy's the one who says "Move. Now." near the end. Looking smooth, too. This movie looks like someone puked up ETERNAL SUNSHINE all over CLOCKWORK ORANGE. I think there might have been a hint of MATRIX, as well. I shall see this movie. Well done.
