Obama's grandmother dies a day before election

Obama's grandmother dies day before election

HONOLULU – A day before the presidential election, Barack Obama announced the death Monday of his grandmother, who helped raise him and who he praised as the cornerstone of his family. The Democratic presidential candidate announced the news in a joint statement with his sister Maya Soetoro-Ng. He said his grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, had died peacefully after a battle with cancer.

He said: "She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility. She was the person who encouraged and allowed us to take chances."

The candidate learned of her death Monday morning while he was campaigning in Jacksonville, Fla. He planned to go ahead with campaign appearances.

Late last month, Obama took a break from campaigning and flew to Hawaii to be with the 86-year-old Dunham.

Obama said the decision to go to Hawaii was easy to make, telling CBS that he "got there too late" when his mother died of ovarian cancer in 1995 at 53, and wanted to make sure "that I don't make the same mistake twice."

I wish his family well in their time of grief.

R.I.P. I hope Obama had the decency to apologize to her for calling her a racist before she passed away.

At least Gore had the decency to wait until after the election that his wife was dying of cancer.

Yeah me too. I have personally seen cancer hurt many people. I just have trouble feeling a lot of sympathy for somebody who helped spawn someone who may bring about the end of our country as we know it. Nazism is going to be real cosmopolitan soon.

I live in Ohio and I've already heard from someone that a campaign caller started the call by first mentioning their condolences to Obama, then going into his Change spiel. Freaking disgusting.

Oh I don't see this election as being in the bag for Obama. Either way I'm not going to be to upset or elated. I'm also not going to be surprised or shocked by anything a McCain supporter will have to say afterwards.

For McCain supporters life goes on. The Obama kool aid drinkers won't know how to pick up the pieces if he loses. You're just a guy who feels he has to vote dem no matter what. You said all the same things we are saying while he ran against Hillary so I know how you really feel!

Actually if you check out the Obama thread I differed with you guys a number of times while Hillary was still in it. I have criticised him true but if I acted like you do with McCain, you would declare me a kool aid drinker. I think it just comes down to you can't or won't respect anyone's vote for Obama.
