Anyone else come across this yet?
Basically a bunch of movies have been released with a bonus digital copy on them, that allows you to rip them to you PC or portable device.

So far I believe Sony is the main company behind this, but they are being cunts, and the only portable device you can save the file to, is a bloody PSP.

Yeah, I can save it to my PC, but thats pointless as I might just as well crack out the DVD and watch it on my 42" plasma tv if I am at home.
The whole point of this digital copy thing, was sposed to be about making your DVDs portable.
You can also transfer it to your PS3 from your PSP, by all accounts, but thats still hardly what you would call "portable"!

What made it even worse though, is the code provided in the DVD case, was invalid, so didnt work (it has to register online via the code) and I had to contact Sony to get a new code.

Ok, so I can understand why Sony might think that they should be pushing their own product with the PSP exclusivity, but I doubt that digital copy will make people rush out and buy a PSP to watch these films, seeing as the UMD function on the PSP has hardly been a raging success.

In the small print on the DVD case, it also states that the code must be redeemed by Nov 2009, so I dont know if that means that it will just make it impossible to rip after that date, or the file on your PC will expire as well.

All in all, this will not stop people downloading illegal files if you start putting so many restrictions on it (which is what they are partially trying to do).

I thought the point of the digital copy was to download it to iPods, Zunes, etc.?

That was my impression, and maybe that is the case with other companies, but Sony has made their copies exclusive to the PSP.

Sony is pretty bad about making noncompatible formats, as I recall. Weren't they the ones who pioneered the Betamax?

Not sure, but thats a bit different, thats a format war thing, just like blu-ray vs hd dvd.
They want all new film companies to use their format, where as this is them restricting a current format (WMV) to play only on their device.

It's more like Sony releasing a DVD or CD that will only play in a Sony player.

Understood. But I woudn't put it past Sony, as part of a format war, to think they can force people to buy PSPs by doing this with the digital copies.

Which is why I say its foolish if thats what they are trying to do.
I can still rip DVDs using various pieces of software dotted around the net, and convert it into a file compatible with most portable media players.
Or of course download the files illegally.

People will do one of those two long before they start running out to buy a PSP.

Agreed. The media and techonology companies need to realize that proprietary technology discourages purchases, not the other way around. But they are largely still stuck in that mindset from when people "had" to pay $15.00 for an album/CD/VHS tape/DVD, etc.

I'm sure this makes PSP owners feel good, like they are in some sort of exclusive club, but its just not going to make many other people wanna join that club.

Personally I really could not give that much of a damn, as I have loads of tv shows etc on my MP3/MP4 player, and I never bother watching them, but I still think its fucking annoying that you dont get the choice!

The dark knight came with a digital disc which I used to immediately place the film on my iPod. Looks beautiful and was very easy to move... Though typing on this iPod forces capital letters. It is the price I must pay

Poor, Rob. Reduced to flinging poo jokes. At this rate, he'll be the first person to ever quit his own board.

Which, come to think of it, might be the only thing that would make his blog readable.

Ok, got some more DVDs with digital copy today, and it is quite laughable.
One is of course Sony, so thats pointless unless you own a PSP, as I already know.

The second one is a Dreamworks release.
This one will work with iTunes, and Playforsure devices.
My Archos is Playforsure compatible, but I will be damned if I can get it to play the file.

The third disc is a Universal title.
As of yet, I have not tried it, so cannot confirm whether it works or not, but on the paper that comes with it, it says "Not compatible with iTunes".

So, the Dreaworks one is the only one of the three compatible with the iPod/iPhone by the looks of it.
The Sony one is only compatible with the PSP.
But the Universal is compatible with neither.

Just to bring this one back up.
Just got a copy of The International on blu ray as I found it cheap, and it comes with a digital copy.
Now, its a Sony disc and it looks like they have finally woken up and smelled the coffee as it is compatible with PSP, PC, Mac and iPoo.

I wasnt sure it was applicable anyway due to the possibility of this being a used copy, and not sure if these are one time user codes, and I also noticed that the small print said it had to be redeemed by 8th July this year. (although further on in the small print it says that the code may not be redeemable after this date.

Anyway, I just tried it in the name of research (not Townshend research) and it works.
