This movie is basically House MD in the 1800s. And seeing as how House is based on Sherlock Holmes in the first place, that makes it a reinvention of a reinvention. Not sure how that contributes to its overall quality.

This movie is basically House MD in the 1800s. And seeing as how House is based on Sherlock Holmes in the first place, that makes it a reinvention of a reinvention. Not sure how that contributes to its overall quality. It’s a good-looking film that is fun and comic, with fine performances from Law, Downey and, especially, Strong.I definitely recommend it. The logic, action and bits of comedy made Sherlock Holmes a brilliant and enjoyable film

It also seems that the studio isn't afraid of some heavy competition as they've set their next installment to premiere on December 16, 2011, the same weekend set aside for Paramount's Mission: Impossible IV and 20th Century Fox's Alvin and the Chipmunks 3D.
Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are confirmed as returning to their roles of the famed inspector and his friend Watson. There's been consistent rumors that Brad Pitt would be playing Holmes' nemesis Moriarty but no signed deal has been confirmed as of yet. Director Guy Ritchie is also returning to direct, based on a script by Kieran and Michele Mulroney.
Warner Bros. Pictures has been fast-tracking Sherlock Holmes 2 ever since the first opened up on Christmas Day last year to the tune of $62.3 million. With Ritchie keeping the budget relatively low for a tent pole at just $90 million, it went on to gross $516.7 million worldwide.

I doubt Daniel Day-Lewis would be interested. The dude only makes a film every nine years, and then he wins the Oscar for it.
I doubt he would consider anything that could be considered a "popcorn" film.

Ha. That would be awkward, Penn isn't known for his sense of humor. It's weird. I was flipping through the channels and caught him and Elvis Costello on Two and a Half Men. He seemed to be taking a bit of a shot at himself in that. I guess if someone writes it in a script and pays him money for it, he'll 'find the motivation' to do it.

Pictures and director Guy Ritchie have found the man they want to play the older brother of Sherlock Holmes, with the HollywoodNews reporting that Stephen Fry is set to portray Mycroft in the sequel set for theaters on December 16, 2011. The actor revealed as much to The Danny Baker Show on BBC Radio 5 Live.
"I'm playing Mycroft in the sequel to the Sherlock Holmes film Guy Ritchie directed with Robert Downey Jr., " says Fry. "And that sort of part is fun, but just once in a while to play a genuine all round sort of lead figure with complexity and tragedy and wit and all the sort of things that Oscar Wilde had was a once in a lifeftime thrill."
The older sibling for Holmes is known for being just as wise as his the famed inspector but lazier in that he won't go out of his way to prove his theories correct, especially if such a scenario involves physical activities. Fry joins the previously confirmed stars Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law and Noomi Rapace. Director Ritchie is returning to the helm based on a script by Kieran and Michele Mulroney.
