Holder Admits to Not Reading Arizona's Immigration Law Despite Criticizing It

 Quote:
Despite repeatedly voicing concerns about Arizona's new immigration enforcement law in recent weeks and threatening to challenge it, Attorney General Eric Holder said Thursday he has not yet read the law -- which is only 10 pages long.

"I have not had a chance to -- I've glanced at it," Holder said at a House Judiciary Committee hearing when asked had he read the state law cracking down on illegal immigrants.

Holder told reporters last month that he fears the new law is subject to abuse and that the Justice Department and the Homeland Security Department are in the midst of conducting a review.

Holder said last month that a number of options are under consideration, including the possibility of a court challenge.

On Thursday, Holder said he plans to read the law before reaching a decision on whether he thinks it's constitutional.

Yeah, that was pretty amazing.

Holder bitterly condemns the Arizona crackdown on illegals. But he never even read the legislation he condemns as "racist"!

Amazing that he admitted it. He must have been very unprepared for that committee, and was caught completely off guard, when asked.

Yeah, that's pretty close to legal malpractice: the attorney for the U.S. government, acting in his official capacity, rendering an opinion on a statute he hasn't even read.

Napolitano Admits She Hasn't Read Complete Arizona Immigration Law: Homeland Security Secretary admits that she has not read Arizona immigration law even though she's gone on television to criticize it.

First, the U.S. Attorney. Now the Director of Homeland Security.

Maybe, if someone puts it up on a teleprompter, the President will at least take a glance at it.

I've also read that despite California's boycott they have a similar law on the books.

Arizona Official Threatens to Cut Off Los Angeles Power as Payback for Boycott:
  • Gary Pierce, a commissioner on the five-member Arizona Corporation Commission, wrote the letter in response to the Los Angeles City Council's decision last week to boycott the Grand Canyon State -- in protest of its immigration law -- by suspending official travel there and ending future contracts with state businesses.

Noting that a quarter of Los Angeles' electricity comes from Arizona power plants, Pierce threatened to pull the plug if the City Council does not reconsider.

"I received your message; please receive mine. As a statewide elected member of the Arizona Corporation Commission overseeing Arizona's electric and water utilities, I too am keenly aware of the 'resources and ties' we share with the city of Los Angeles," Pierce wrote.

"If an economic boycott is truly what you desire, I will be happy to encourage Arizona utilities to renegotiate your power agreements so Los Angeles no longer receives any power from Arizona-based generation."

These idiots in CA called for a boycott and didn't realize they get their power from AZ. I love it.

Obama Administration to File Suit Against Arizona Immigration Law: The confirmation comes after Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in an interview earlier this month that the administration would challenge the law in court, though officials had long said the issue was under review.

Gosh, I hope the attorney general actually reads it before filing the lawsuit. That usually makes court run much smoother.

Wow, it sounds to me like Obama is finally getting serious about securing our borders.

And by serious, I mean seriously undermining the system.

Another idiot. This one can't read maps.
  • [Milwaukee (WI) County Supervisor Peggy West] appeared confused about Arizona's location during debate about a measure that would have had the county boycott the state over its controversial new immigration law.

She said, "If this was Texas, which is a state that is directly on the border with Mexico, and they were calling for a measure like this saying that they had a major issue with undocumented people flooding their borders, I would have to look twice at this. But this is a state that is a ways removed from the border."

In response:

  • Arizona Senator Jon Kyl has confirmed, Arizona is, in fact, on the border with Mexico.

Kyl sent ...West a letter in which he says, "You will be interested to learn that Arizona does indeed share a border with Mexico. I have enclosed a map for your convenience."

Kyl goes on to urge West to, "actually read the Arizona law before forming an opinion about it."

I guess you can't really expect them to worry about the illegals being able to read and speak English when they can't even understand simple concepts such as geography and borders.

This gets better and better:
  • Boycotting Arizona is harder than it sounds.

Though the passage of the state's immigration law was met in late April with immediate threats to cut ties with Arizona in protest, a number of cities have either scaled back or created exemptions to their own boycotts.

The resolutions also have demanded a mountain of work by officials at the city level tasked with reviewing hundreds of internal contracts for any trace of Arizona to see whether it's prudent to cut ties. As the review process gets underway, the result may be a patchwork of targeted boycotts rather a blanket ban on all things Arizona.

The Los Angeles City Council was the latest to amend its boycott last Wednesday, when lawmakers voted to make an exemption so that an Arizona-based company that operates enforcement cameras at Los Angeles intersections can continue to do business there.

The program earned the city $6 million last year. City officials cited economic as well as public safety concerns in arguing to extend the contract with American Traffic Solutions, based in Scottsdale. Los Angeles Councilman Richard Alarcon said the boycott was "never intended to impede public safety."

 Quote:
The U.S. Justice Department is filing a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Arizona's new law targeting illegal immigrants, setting the stage for a clash between the federal government and state over the nation's toughest immigration crackdown.

The planned lawsuit was confirmed to The Associated Press by a Justice Department official with knowledge of the plans. The official didn't want to be identified before a public announcement planned for later Tuesday.

The lawsuit will argue that Arizona's new measure requiring state and local police to question and possibly arrest illegal immigrants during the enforcement of other laws, like traffic stops, usurps federal authority.

....

Arizona passed the law after years of frustration over problems associated with illegal immigration, including drug trafficking and violent kidnappings. The state is the biggest gateway into the U.S. for illegal immigrants, and is home to an estimated 460,000 illegal immigrants.

The lawsuit is expected to be announced by Attorney General Eric Holder and Homeland Security secretary Janet Napolitano, a former Arizona governor.

President Barack Obama addressed the Arizona law in a speech on immigration reform last week. He touched on one of the major concerns of federal officials, that other states were poised to follow Arizona by crafting their own immigration enforcement laws.

"As other states and localities go their own ways, we face the prospect that different rules for immigration will apply in different parts of the country," Obama said. "A patchwork of local immigration rules where we all know one clear national standard is needed."

The law makes it a state crime for legal immigrants to not carry their immigration documents and bans day laborers and people who seek their services from blocking traffic on streets.

The law also prohibits government agencies from having policies that restrict the enforcement of federal immigration law and lets Arizonans file lawsuits against agencies that hinder immigration enforcement.

It tends to put you immediately at a disadvantage and IMO is a sign of true weakness.
This is true both in politics and on the internet."

Critics Question Why Obama Administration Doesn't Crack Down on Sanctuary Cities
  • Now that the Obama administration is suing Arizona over its tough immigration law, some critics are asking why so-called sanctuary cities are getting a pass for ignoring federal immigration law.

There are more than 50 sanctuary cities in the U.S. Supporters of such policies say they want the local police to focus on solving crimes and leave the immigration work to the federal authorities.
