I just bought a netbook, and am quite amazed at the possibilities it provides. Now I don't have to stay indoors just to browse porn, I can do it outside! in public!
...but outside sucks, lots of people and sun. I mostly just use it indoors for work, because it will save a lot on electricity compared to my desktop. But I'm troubled about the batteries, which one will degrade my batteries faster: using the AC power as much as possible or running on batteries until it drains and then going back to AC/rinse and repeat?
Also, fuck intel's integrated graphics solution. The 1.66 ghz atom processor on my notebook is awesome, and could be comparable to a 1ghz p4, but I can't play 3d games after quake 3 despite having 200mhz clock and 256mb vidram because the graphics chipset doesn't have hardware T&L.

Leave it plugged whenever you can. You should never let the battery drain all the way down. It used to be good but now they use a different kind of battery.

I heard leaving it on was good so I always left it on, and then I heard unplugging it was good so I always unplugged it, and so on and so on, and now the battery's all fucked and I have to put VHS tapes under the laptop so it doesn't overheat (turning the computer off without warning).

I put one on each side so the center is elevated and the battery doesn't touch the table, which is what causes overheating. Wasn't a problem when the battery wasn't fucked.

You could buy a cooling pad or a lapdesk. Those things should help keep your computer cool.

yeah I have one of those laptop cooling pads. it has a pink floral design.
My sister's laptop got a fucked hard disk when she used it on her bed without a cooling pad, or any sort of elevation whatsoever. the mattress kept the temperature locked in and after a few minutes, her hard disk just stopped working. it was an old dell, though.

also, every so often you should probably open the service panel on the underside and go through the innards of your laptop with canned air to keep all the ventilation and fan ducts free of dust - that is a big factor in overheating as well, especially with 17' form factor 'entertainment' notebooks.
