http://www.theverge.com/2012/2/29/2833006/how-to-install-windows-8-consumer-preview

How to download and install it.

I've played around with it briefly. Its a tablet OS, not a PC OS. I'm sure it will change before its final release but it really looks like this is for the touch screen market.

I couldn't even find the correct way to shut down my computer while in 8. I'm not giving up on it yet but if you're going to try it out watch some tutorials first.

how about the games? can you try it on games?

I hope it doesn't have any compatibility issues with games, it's the biggest reason why a lot of people still use Windows.

Haven't tried those yet. I think Steam had some issues with the Windows 7 beta but I haven't read anything about it yet.

Getting rid of the start menu is the dumbest thing microsoft has ever done.

I'm forcing myself to use this all weekend.

The developer preview had access to the regular desktop, does the consumer preview not? I downloaded the ISO at work but my boss sent me home early and I didn't get the chance to install it. It looks like Microsoft has fallen in love with live tiles. It works on touch screen phones and tablets but I'm not sure how well it'll work on traditional pc's.

the metro interface has very limited usefulness with conventional applications and platforms. as was said earlier it's definitely a tablet- and touch-driven OS. there will be more modularity to the final release; aero is still embedded in the codebase so presumably a vista/7-type interface is still accessible for those of us who don't see the point in tiling absolutely everything.

go.

It has the desktop but without the start menu. The more I use it the more I like it but Windows 8 is made for tablets and touch screens. Its fun to play with but unless they make some big changes I won't be using Windows 8 as my main operating system when it comes out.

Yeah, I think they should just issue this for tablets and touchscreens. I like it. It just seems that by trying to push it in both markets they're going to leave a lot to be desired in the final product. By narrowing the focus, I think it will give them time to build a quality ecosystem for apps. Without which, I think this whole enterprise is going nowhere fast anyway.

It's not surprising Microsoft is jumping on this bandwagon, insofar as Apple is already making its operating system more tablet oriented.

fuck that shit, I'm still using Ms Office 2000 pro. I just installed the official compatibility pack thingie to get support for the newer file formats (docx, xlsx, etc)

I'm currently downloading the consumer preview iso, and will try it on Virtualbox.

I think I'm gonna completely wipe my hard drive and just install windows 8 on it. I know enough about it now that I can use it all the time. Also, I think it will be fun and force me to learn more about it.

I'm done messing around with it. I couldn't get the right drivers for my network adapter so I couldn't download any of my games.

I'll give it another try after the next update.

I think if I wasn't so sick of the live tile look due to my windows phone I'd be much more inclined to enjoy it, but I spent most of my day today getting used to the interface and I hate it already. I actually have more enjoyment using Ubuntu or a Mac than this. If I could eliminate Windows from my life this would be the time to do it. I just don't know if I'm going for an iPhone or Android next spring when my contracts up.

Just installed this on my main office PC so I can use it more actively than my laptop. I still hate the shutdown method and I hate how MS is forcing you to link it with a hotmail account during the install. The start menu really shouldn't be the default screen but I haven't looked to see if I can fix that yet.

Which is funny, because as loud as Apple is they have no choice but to advertise the fuck out of their company. Their products are overpriced and they market themselves as trendy for all the hipsters but the truth is that most companies and IT people prefer Windows for their market saturation and overall user friendly interface. I deal with all sorts of companies and the few that had Macs had them in their Marketing and Graphics department while the rest of the company used Windows, and when I talked to their IT department 8 times out of 10 winced when they got a call in. Some have even paid us $150 an hour to solve their headache for them. I've been to several churches and schools that ran on Macs exclusively and for the most part the average user just felt more frustrated.

oh yus. I can't stand the smugness sometimes. I got nothing against the OS itself (if it's the first OS I used, It would probably be easier for me) and I know that macs nowadays use the same components as PCs, but it's the whole "Macs just work. PCs crash all the time duh!" thing that grates on me. Windows 7 these days is very stable (I have a workstation that stayed open for months on end without a single crash) provided that you don't do certain stupid things (things that would probably also ruin a Mac, if only they had support for said things).

I got no brand loyalty towards windows, though. It has its faults (and I like Ubuntu's wibbly wobbly desktop effects better), but I use Windows over the others because it has all my games and emulators. If Mac would get more third party support or get proper ports for games maybe they'd have the chance to overtake windows.

Mac users tend to excuse the high price tag as the price you pay for quality, even though there are PC equivalents for a fraction of the price. They can't seem to admit that what they are paying for is the brand.

I like the iPad though (and I've been using my mom's! hooray for old people who buy expensive stuff that they won't bother to learn how to use!). I honestly feel Apple's got the best tablets in the market right now. It just sucks that I can't pirate stuff with it, without voiding the warranty with a jailbreak.

Hey rex, have you downloaded this version yet to see if it's compatible with your games? I'm curious of what kind of legacy support W8 will allow. I don't seem to be having trouble just loading the windows 7 drivers, and Update didn't have issues with my video card and stuff.
