Am I the only one who finds this very disappointing?

And what's with those huge man-breasts?

I'm not real fond of the series either. IMO, it's the weakest of the ABC line.

Some people think Tom Strong is absolutely fantastic and I cannot for the life of me see why this is.

I think a lot of what ABC has put out is very mediocre by Alan Moore's standards. The only title I really liked was LOEG. I did enjoy early issues of Promethea (which in my opinion has become very self indulgent and no longer holds my attention anymore) and I also quite liked Top 10 and tommorow stories but, with the exception of LOEG, none of it has really moved me.

I still collect it. It's a straightforward series that in the beginning had some interesting tales, but has been lackluster as of late.

TS's Terrific Tales is better IMO.

I think the weakest non-spinoff series was Tomorrow Stories. I liked the earlier Tom Strong stuff better, but I'm still enjoying the current arc. It's not Moore's strongest work, but I think it's better than most of the tripe that's out there now. It's fun. It doesn't take itself seriously. Very silver age-y. A soothing detour from the ultra grim n' gritty, so called "realistic" books that fill the racks today. There should be always be a place, even if only a small one, in comics for the escapist science fiction fan(the genre that gave rise to comic books in the first place).

I bought the first tp the toher day. I like the rest of the ABC line, even Promethea (which as we've previously discussed is a bit too preachy). But I didn't see much merit in this one. I agree that it is Silver age-ish - probably why I'm not fond of it.

I like it for its "Silver Age pastiche" quality and don't expect it to do anything but reach my inner child as these kinds of comics are supposed to do. Maybe you were expecting the Alan Moore of WATCHMEN when you picked up TOM STRONG, Dave, but that's not what was either promised or delivered. Moore is writing pure pastiche in the adventure genre is all, no more or less, and he's proven that the craft of the 8-page story has not been lost after all.

The earlier issues were great, but the more recent ones haven't given me the same childlike feeling when I read them. Tom Strong's Terrific Tales seems to be better as far as quality goes, though you can't beat Chris Sprouse's clean lines.

I finished the first arc recently. This is Alan Moore having fun. Not many writers get to do this, and even less are able of making it as enjoyable as Tom Strong is. I like it a lot.

I have always been a big fan of this book, for the simple reason that, mentioned a few times above, it's just plain fun. I dig it for many of the same reasons that I was a die-hard fan of Jerry Ordway's Power of Shazam! (both the hardcover and the following now-defunct monthly), the much-missed Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. and the 1992 Parobeck JSA series.

'Course, I also dig stuff like Big Bang Comics and such, so what do I know?

It was actually your recommendation which convinced me to purchase the book, HK. Not quite my cup of tea, though.

I liken ABC and Tom Strong in particular to the later works of Robert Plant, post Zeppelin. Nothing wrong with it per se yet undefinably not good.

Hey I'm easy, bring it on big boy.

Piggo, that is a very kind offer which I'll accept, particularly because my comic shop doesn't have the Age of Bronze tpb. In return I'll send you something Australian-ish. PM me your address, and I'll PM you mine.
