The Superman and Batman books would be fairly simple to guess at what they'd be like.

But what about characters like the Flash and Green Lantern, who've each been seen in three different versions, three different identities?

For my money, I'd like to see an "Ultimate" style Flash comic starring a young Jay Garrick in the present-day, and an "Ultimate" style Green Lantern comic starring a young Alan Scott in the present-day. They would be updated for the 21st century, of course, but I've always thought that those two characters would be ideal for a revision of this sort. And as a bonus, we could see a young Molly Maynne (Harlequin) with all her glorious red hair. *sigh* There's just something about redheads that I like.

Well, Birthright was supposed to be "Ultimate Superman." Too bad DC decided to piss on that idea and reduce it to a useless throwaway with meaning or importance to the character.

When Wizard did their "Ultimate DC" article last year, they chose Barry Allen and John Stewart as their Flash and GL. I'm thinking John got the nod on account of Justice League, but Barry caught me by surprise. I thought for certain Wally would have been tagged, since he's the most recent of the Flashes.

Not anymore - they've reverted him to Green Lantern ever since the Nodell case got settled.

Green Lantern has the most appeal to me. I think I'd make him an alien, with a set alien agenda based upon his own alien conceptions of justice - disarm nuclear weapons, release animals from zoos, that sort of thing.

And he should be very alien - not just a man with a lion's head or a humanoid diamond, but something quite odd.

As for Flash... I liked the Kingdom Come Flash very much. He was not quite human anymore because of his speed. I'd like to see a KC Flash as an ultimate Flash.

You have red back hair?

Ultimate Green Arrow would have to be the DKR GA, with one arm gone and a baldy head.

What back hair I do have is indeed red (thankfully my chest hair doesn't reach much around back -- I'd look like a frickin' orangutan if it did)...

Marty Nodell created the Alan Scott Green Lantern. He decided to sue DC on the same basis as Jack Kirby has sued Marvel over Captain America (I'd explain the details but its tricky and it involves creator's rights under the US Copyright Act). The dispute recently settled on undisclosed terms.

While the dispute was on foot, the Golden Age GL became known as Sentinel, and he lost his ring. When the dispute settled, the name was reverted to Green Lantern and he recovered his ring (or so I hear).

Its no coincidence: DC may have been trying to argue that the character they used was a deriviation of the original one created by Nodell.

My Ultimate GL:

Hal Jordan was an ex-fighter pilot whose last mission went terribly awry. That day Hal fought valiantly and saved several American lives that would have been lost otherwise.

The military, however, in need of a scapegoat to cover up the reality of Hal's last battle, would dishonorably shit-can Hal from the military, sullying his good name forever.

Fast forward to a few years later. Hal is only a shadow of the man he once was. His beliefs shaken, he bounces from one dead end, low pay job to the next, and is unable to keep a steady relationship. Then he is chosen, due to his courage and potential power of will, to be the next GL of this sector.

Hal's character would probably be much like Marvel's Captain America and Matthew Bright from Rising Stars. He would be steadfast and resolute in his belief in order, law, and justice, even moreso than many of his fellow heroes. He would be authoritative and unquestioning of his training and morals, at least in the beginning. He would be a soldier of Oa. This would make his downfall, and there would be a downfall, that much more dramatic.

Thanks.Hal and Kyle are my favorites but I figured if thier gonna have an "ultimate" GL that it'd be best to take some from all the prominent GL's instead of just havin' it be a new version of the old thing.

"Hal Jordan was an ex-fighter pilot whose last mission went terribly awry."

Interesting. That describes the opening scenes in the movie ZERO HOUR!

Or, to put in terms more people can relate to, the comedy remake of ZH-- AIRPLANE!
