I haven't really followed the rest, but this is news?
Australia has until recently always had US ambassadors who were friends or partisan supporters of whoever was the current president. Its a cushy role. I recall the US ambassador appointed by GWB said something like, "I sure am glad to be ambassador to a country which speaks "American,"" or somesuch. I think the current ambassador is actually a career diplomat, which from memory was the first time ever.
