http://www.newsarama.com/film/superman-henry-cavill-110130.htmlI've never seen an episode of The Tudors,so I don't really have an idea as to how this guy's acting is.
Me neither. He was in "Stardust," albeit in a minor role, but didn't make an impression on me one way or another.
As noted in the
article, they've been floating this guy as Superman for years now.
In fact, he's
also auditioned for both Batman and Bond.
No idea if he can act but, based on the pic posted at the source, sans three-day beard he looks the part.
Tom Welling is either going to commit suicide or go postal at the WB offices.
If Welling wanted to play Superman he could have by now. He's an executive producer on Smallville and nothing was stopping him from putting on the tights and the cape and moving that damn show to a story point it should have been at about five years ago.
I'm disappointed by the lack of pointless outrage in this thread. Fuck you both.
Train-wreck. Sony just needs to hand the keys back to MARVEL...
That translates into billions of dollars at the box office.
They are rumoring Olivia Wilde as Lois Lane.
Really? Last I heard it the front runners were
Jessica Biel, Rachel McAdams and Malin Akerman. Wilde wasn't even mentioned.
But she's insanely hot and, given that Thirteen on House has the right mix of smarts and snark, I think it could work. In fact, it's probably one of the best choices I've heard so far.
Wilde's getting popular in Hollywood. She was in Tron and in the upcoming Cowboys and Aliens. Again, it's just rumor; but one of the best so far.
Interestingly enough, Wilde's parents and most of her relatives are journalists. At least according to wikipedia.
That's not interesting at all...
That's like the opposite of interesting.
Rumors are that Kevin Costner is being approached for a role. Speculation is for Pa Kent.

Will he have a baseball diamond in his corn field?

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Oscar®-nominated actress Diane Lane will play Martha Kent, the only mother Clark Kent has ever known, in the new Superman movie to be directed by Zack Snyder.
Snyder stated, "This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman. We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination."
Lane will star with Henry Cavill, who was recently announced as the new Clark Kent/Superman.
Lane earned an Academy Award® nomination for her performance in the 2002 drama "Unfaithful." She most recently starred in the family hit "Secretariat." She next stars in the HBO feature "Cinema Verite," opposite Tim Robbins and James Gandolfini. Lane's long list of film credits also includes "Nights in Rodanthe," "Hollywoodland," "Must Love Dogs," "Under the Tuscan Sun," "Perfect Storm," "My Dog Skip," "Chaplin," "The Cotton Club" and "A Little Romance," to name only a portion.
Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.
Slated for release in December 2012, the new Superman movie will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
This sounds more and more like another damn origin story.
Yes, imagine how horrible it's going to be for them to create the foundation for their interpretation of the character by familiarizing new fans with Superman's origins. Didn't they see how terrible that was for Batman Begins? I don't know as I never watched the movie. I just read a review online.
It sounds more like an origin story because they cast someone to play Clarks mom?

The record will reflect that TDK was a bigger hit that BB, meaning that many more people saw it. This indicates that people were able to enjoy a Batman film without having seen the rebooted origin.
Furthermore, Superman's origin, or at least enough of it to make a good movie, is sufficiently familiar to moviegoers. If there's a good story people can jump in the middle without knowing everything about a character's past and let the back story unfold later (see, eg, Raiders, etc.). In fact, sometimes dredging up the origin actually hurts a series (see, eg, SW prequels and Vader).
As for this movie, maybe they'll do a good job with the origin. Maybe they won't. All I know is that, given the choice, I'd rather see an entertaining movie that concentrates on something other than an origin that I've seen done to death.
It sounds more like an origin story because they cast someone to play Clarks mom?
Have you
seen Diane Lane?
Maybe I'm wrong (that's why I said "it sounds like") but she's awfully hot to be playing Ma to a full grown Clark.
Yeah, it's technically possible but typically Ma and Pa are older people when Clark first puts on the cape.
So either they're going with a bold new MILFy direction where Ma and Pa found the rocket when she was in her late teens/early twenties or they cast young so she can realistically age her with makeup from the beginning to the end of the film.
And if its the latter that points to another origin.
And, hey, again, I'm fully prepared to be wrong on this but given how Snyder handled Silk Spectre I in Watchmen (cast middle aged but still hot Carla Gugino to play her in an age range from her twenties to her sixties) my instinct tells me its the same thing here.
The record will reflect that TDK was a bigger hit that BB, meaning that many more people saw it. This indicates that people were able to enjoy a Batman film without having seen the rebooted origin.
You, sir, are retarded. Could the success of TDK not owe a bit to Batman Begins's success? I remember several people on this board being excited to see the film just after it had been announced thanks to how much we loved the first. TDK success in no way proves that people hadn't seen Begins. I know several people, both comic and non-comic fans, who'd seen BB and went and saw TDK several times in the theater. Some on opening weekend. You're drawing conclusions with no actual facts to back them up.
Furthermore, Superman's origin, or at least enough of it to make a good movie, is sufficiently familiar to moviegoers. If there's a good story people can jump in the middle without knowing everything about a character's past and let the back story unfold later (see, eg, Raiders, etc.). I'll just use some quotes from a previous discussion about this very topic to further my point.
I disagree. Not everyone is as familiar with the origins as you think. Origin movies are a good way to get a new generation of fans interested in the character. I was too young to read comics when I first saw the Donner Superman movie. That was my introduction to the character's origin. I know it now, but I didn't when I first saw it. People like you and me take it for granted. Besides, Batman Begins was an origin movie. All it did was reinforce how bad ass Batman was and added a lot of depth to the character.
Frankly, Superman could use a reboot with an origin movie. One, it would separate him from the lackluster Singer movie. Secondly, it could redefine a him for a new generation. I likes me the Donner Superman movies, but I'm not a fan of his vision of Krypton. I'd like to see a new, big budget version of Krypton.
I fully agree.
The bulk of people who see a super hero film are not comic book fans, or know the origins of the heroes.
Some of the best films have been origin related anyway.
I think the worst thing you can do is do a super hero film without having an origin in it, then if its a success, you are freer to work on the story for the second one.
Also, yes, the Superman franchise needs a complete reboot with a new origin film.
I think I learned the origins and both Superman and The Bat-Man from the movies. For a long time I thought the Joker really did kill the Waynes.
So, in summation, it's selfish of the people who want to exclude Superman's origins from a rebooted movie franchise just because they already know it. The movies aren't just made for comic book nerds. They're made for the entire money spending public.
It sounds more like an origin story because they cast someone to play Clarks mom?

Or they're using her in flashbacks.
Not everyone is as familiar with the origins as you think. Origin movies are a good way to get a new generation of fans interested in the character. I was too young to read comics when I first saw the Donner Superman movie. That was my introduction to the character's origin. I know it now, but I didn't when I first saw it. Indiana Jones. Huge hit. No origin movie.
the Incredibles. Huge hit. No origin movie.
James Bond series. Huge hit, beg. with Dr. No. No origin movie until Casino Royale.
A good movie, even a good fantasy-action movie, doesn't need an origin to suck people in.
And lots of people become "new fans" of superheroes without the origin being the first thing they see or read. You may have not known about Superman until you saw the Donner movie, but a lot of other people got into Superman because of picking a random, non-origin, issue of the comic book. Or by watching a random, non-origin, episode of the George Reeves series. Or watching a random, non-origin, version of Super Friends.
Also, forget the movies for a second and look at the Batman TV series. Campy or not, it was one of--if not the--most successful adaptations of a comic book superhero of all time. Hell, people still quote the "biff pow zap" stuff and imitate Adam West. It was a huge hit upon its premiere. It made an entire generation of kids into Batman fans.
And there was no origin episode. No Thomas and Martha Wayne. No Joe Chill. No Crime Alley. No bat through the window after twenty years of training. Nothing. All you had was Bruce Wayne making a brief mention to the Wayne foundation board that he was funding an anti-crime initiative because his parents had been murdered. Then it was to the batcave, roll credits and kick the Riddler's ass. The producers knew that all you needed was a brief snippet of back story and then instant action.
Furthermore, at the time the series aired, Batman wasn't even that popular. The book was almost canceled. And the origin was only mentioned in the comics once every five or six years (if that).
Therefore, you can't argue that the millions of new fans that show created already knew the origin. Or that they needed the origin to enjoy the show.
If Batman can be successfully adapted once (and, using the terminology of today, "rebooted" from the movie serials) without retelling the origin, I think the same could be said for Superman.
So, really, it's just a matter of personal preference. You'd like to see another origin. I'd prefer something else. Beyond that, we're both speculating on the need (or lack of thereof) for an origin movie and how successful it might be.
All I know is that, given the choice, I'd rather see an entertaining movie that concentrates on something other than an origin that I've seen done to death.
you have the advantage of being thousands of years old! franchises need "kicks in the butt" every now and then. it's unfair to think "it's out there already" is a good enough reason not to retell it. beyond the group of those too young to know it, and beyond the group of those outside of the comics circle, there's even the benefit that, shit, they could do it
better this time, impressing even us super nerds. i think batman begins is a great testament to that.
while i agree, i
personally would prefer a new story, there's certainly no harm in reworking an origin -- especially if there's a new take on it. and all that, of course, is assuming this is an origin story, at all.
i
do think it's a little conflicting to have so recently had a superfilm that is now (presumably) unrelated. i thought the same for the hulks, and for the upcoming spidey franchise. i can see how those conflicts could cause a bit of confusion to some of the groups i mentioned, above. but, a story is a story. origin or new, if it's good, that's all that matters.
The court ruled against you the moment you submitted an Adam West video...
The record will reflect that TDK was a bigger hit that BB, meaning that many more people saw it. This indicates that people were able to enjoy a Batman film without having seen the rebooted origin.
That's a huge leap there. BB had a smaller box office gat than TDK but that doesn't indicate viewers. How many watched DVD, HBO, Netfliz ect BB and decided to see TDK in theaters? You can't possibly quantify that.
I would imagine there were many people sickened by the ending of the last Batman franchise who did not see BB in theaters and maybe tried it in a cheaper venue and enjoyed it enough to try the sequel in the theater.
Please post the picture of Diane Lane again. I'm not yet done.
http://www.mania.com/costner-confirmed-for-superman_article_129063.html After a few weeks of being one of the hot casting rumors surrounding Zack Snyder's reboot of Superman, Warner Bros. Pictures is making it official that Kevin Costner is the next actor to play Jonathan Kent, the adoptive father who raised Clark Kent as his own son.
“Jonathan Kent is the only father figure Clark has ever had, the man who was there to help Clark understand what he was meant to do in the world as Superman." says director Snyder. "Kevin will be able to communicate the quiet strength of this rural American man who raised the greatest super hero of all time.”
It's all over the internet, including

Has the "Pariah Seal of Disapproval" ever been officially updated to reflect the change of ownership to Pro? If not, its probably time to do so.

Heh. I've just never been impressed with her acting. She's not really that hot or anything. I'd have gone with the chick from TRON LEGACY if anyone...
The cast looks pretty decent so far. The only thing that Pro's this for me that is that I've never been a big fan of Snyder and he's not really a guy who knows how to turn off his directing style.
My verb powers are well established...
Amy Adams looked pretty damn hot in The Fighter.
I was hoping for Halle Berry
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALT!!!
I don't know why I keep doing that. It's not like I've ever associate you with LOST. Must be because you're black. Sorry.

No matter who they cast and who they have direct, it will always be a Superman movie.
You must introduce me to him.
No, Him. Women can barely drive without killing people. You think one could craft a universe?
'Superman': Michael Shannon set as General Zod- The Man of Steel now has an enemy: Warner Bros. announced Sunday that they’ve locked in the Oscar-nominated Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road) to play General Zod opposite Henry Cavill’s Superman in the reboot. Director Zack Snyder said in a release from the studio: “Zod is not only one of Superman’s most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman others don’t. Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role.” Shannon joins an already Oscar-friendly cast that includes Diane Lane and Kevin Costner as Martha and Jonathan Kent, and Amy Adams as Lois Lane.
Again? Zod has been done and has been done well in the Supe movies. They should move on to new characters we haven't seen on the big screen. I would love it if they give us a Darksied or Mongul Superman movie.
was zod a prominent character in the comics prior to the donner films?
for that matter, before he was recently revived (or remade?) in whatever the comic book clusterfuck stories of the past few years have told, was he around in the span since the donner films?
was zod a prominent character in the comics prior to the donner films?
No.
for that matter, before he was recently revived (or remade?) in whatever the comic book clusterfuck stories of the past few years have told, was he around in the span since the donner films?
Again, no. As I recall, prior to Loeb taking over the titles he hadn't been seen since a two or three issue arc back in Byrne's run, at the end of which he was killed off.
i like zod. and i'm not at all opposed to doing a new origin story. but that doesn't mean i want the same movie with new effects.
zod was a nobody before, and a nobody after (pending link verification, of course) the films. and, i think that relative insignificance points to how a superman film could be successful and fun when he's facing anyone. the whole mystique with zod is what happened with him in the donner films, and thus any revisiting to the concept is really just revisiting those films. there's no "catering to the character" or the history or anything like that. it's not like they're making a new lex luthor - they're almost literally just remaking a character only known from one other source; the first movies.
granted, one pitfall with superman is that his rogues gallery is pretty lame. outside of lex luthor, it's difficult for the non-hardcore fan to name any, let alone someone who doesn't know comics. it's not like having the joker, the riddler, catwoman, the penguin, etc. hell, i'm a decent supes fan and i can barely name that many. and then the ones i do think of (toyman, mxy, etc.) are lame [for a one-shot movie format].
but if zod was, for all intents and purposes, created in the film (really, everything most people know is just what donner built) then the formula should hold true that a new opponent could be designed. it doesn't have to be darkseid or doomsday, it could be a movie-specific creation.
sure, there's always a chance of a genetically created sun-god thing... but i think the (atrocious) writing / production was the problem with that, not the character.
I guess I'm fine with Zod. But, to quantify, about as fine as I am with this entire production. It all feels very...........
meh. I dunno. I kind of agree with Rob's analysis, as well. While Zod has been around since the 50's/60's, he wasn't that prominent until Terence Stamp ordered Chris to kneel before him. And like G said, they reappeared in their militaristic cold-war-Russian-esque outfits by the early-to-mid 80's when Byrne wrote the most logical approach to them with Ka-El becoming their executioner. After that, the Phantom Zone trio didn't appear until Jeph Loeb did his gayest to fuck it all up by having some dude who had powers under red sunlight call himself "Zod". Keep in mind, this is the same era and writer who insisted on having people talk, breathe, and in the Flash's case,
run in the empty, cold depths of space. No, that was not sentence error. You read all of that correctly. So, I say again, fuck Jeph Loeb.
But, I digress. General Zod is only known because he appeared in Superman II. They are using this character again to (a) hook the fanboys, (b) hook anyone who remembers Superman II, and (c) give him someone who he can fist-fight with on an even level.
I Pro-dict: it gets a 7-out-of-10. Great effects. Too many Snyder slow-mo-punch shots, though. And Amy Adams is horribly cast as Lois. The sequel could be better. We'll see.
Pro, is there a way to use your powers and pull out a DVD-ripped copy of this movie from the future piratebay?
I've tried. It always comes out as an episode of FULL HOUSE, though. I don't know why...

http://www.mania.com/crowe-fathers-superman_article_130198.html We have another big name being attached to Man of Steel, Zack Snyder's upcoming Superman installment out of Warner Bros. Pictures. With Kevin Costner already set to become his adoptive father, Pa Kent, Variety has confirmed that Russell Crowe is also jumping aboard the fast-tracking production to become the new Jor-El, previously played by Marlon Brando in the previous films.
Both Zack Snyder and Warner Bros. executives have said this is not a reboot or a remake of Donner's films (or an origin tale) so how the re-casting of Jor-El and General Zod (Michael Shannon) plays into the story is something to be revealed later when more plot details come to the surface.
Crowe joins the previously confirmed stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Michael Shannon and Antje Traue. With production scheduled to begin sometime next month, Snyder is at the helm based on a screenplay by David Goyer and Jonathan Nolan. Christopher Nolan is overseeing as a producer alongside Charles Roven, Emma Thomas and Deborah Snyder.
Man of Steel flies into theaters December 2012.
So, I guess the rebooted origin has Jor-El go on a bender around Krypton throwing phones at people until the whole planet is destroyed.
better than the real comics!
http://www.mania.com/ormond-mothers-superman_article_130294.html Nearly ten days after reports surfaced that Russell Crowe was reportedly set to play Jor-El, the father of Superman in Zack Snyder's upcoming installment of Man of Steel, Deadline has revealed that Julia Ormond may be boarding the production as the superhero's mother. The Legends of the Fall actress has reportedly been offered the role of Lara, Kal-El's birth mother from Krypton. His Earth-born parents have been already set with Diane Lane and Kevin Costner set as the Kents.
If Ormond and Crowe sign on the dotted line (both are still in discussions), they will join Henry Cavill (Superman), Diane Lane (Martha Kent), Kevin Costner (Jonathan Kent), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Michael Shannon (General Zod) and Antje Traue (Faora).
With a release set for December 2012, director Zack Snyder is expected to begin production shortly, based on a screenplay by David Goyer and Jonathan Nolan. Batman franchise rebooter Christopher Nolan is overseeing the development as a producer.
In the new movie Lara will be all like, you know, doing things actress Julia Ormond is known for doing.
http://www.mania.com/meloni-enlists-superman_article_130311.html Actor Christopher Meloni is trading a badge for a general ranking. Just a few weeks after Meloni said goodbye to "Law & Order: SVU" by exiting his long-running role as Detective Elliot Stabler, Deadline reported that he was the latest to board Zack Snyder's Man of Steel. It started out as an "unspecified" role but once speculation created a firestorm of fan activity, suggesting he could become Lex Luthor, the actor cleared the air by telling NY Mag's Vulture column that he was set to become a general.
"When Vulture caught up with the now ex–Law & Order: SVU star at the Public Theater Gala earlier this week, he told us he'd be instead playing a general in the movie. But when we pressed for more information about the role, he said, "I can't tell you, or I'd have to kill you." We did manage to learn that he starts filming at the end of August and he'll shoot his part over the course of five months in locations including Chicago, Vancouver, and Edwards Air Force Base."
General Thunderbolt Ross?
Not Hulk's father-in-law, Superman's.

The hair just makes it too hard not to lol when you look at the picture. Hopefully, there will be some better shots that will allow me to take this film a little more serious. Because, based on the stupid looking hair in this one alone, I can't.
Why does it look like he's got at least four layers of cape?

Batman could with enough prep time.
Four layers? Batman hasn't the left his cave with less than five since at least 1970.
FUCK YOU THE G-MAN!!! FUCK YOU IN YOUR STUPID ASSES!
your layer obsessions are tearing the boards apart!
Check out the design they were hiding in the press shot...
Ech.
Booo.
Looks more Aquaman.
That is horrible. Would look much better without all that extra crap on it.
Not thrilled, but waiting for Pro to tell me how it looked in the final version of the film before I decide for sure.
Honestly, the scariest revelation of that pic is that they're apparently filming the movie on VHS.
what's really weird is that S logo is the one that the GA Superman used in the 70's and 80's.
That has something to do with Barry Allen running really fast during production.
oh, I thought Prime was punching continuity walls again. . .
I'm pretty sure that's just pics from a run through. Looks like the cape will be attached to the black part at the collar.
Hopefully, WB learned their mistake with CGI costumes with GL.
Jor-El
Just when I thought I couldn't lose any more interest in this movie.
I guess the giant S stands for Scientist on Krypton?
Zod and Jor-El according to Crowe.
"15km bike ride, umpteen hours fighting Michael Shannon. He's very hard to put down," he said. When asked on whether he wins the fight, Crowe responded with "Hard to tell who wins, we are still fighting tomorrow."
http://www.mania.com/schiff-boards-man-steel_article_131933.html We have yet another addition to Zack Snyder's Man of Steel production, with Variety reporting that Richard Schiff ("The West Wing") has been added to the cast. While the trade only confirms that Schiff is playing a character named "Dr. Hamilton," Superman fans across the web will remember that previous comics and the animated series utilized a character named Professor Emil Hamilton, often in connection to the top-secret research laboratory S.T.A.R. Labs. In the comics, the character began as a scientist and was eventually turned into a villain by the name of Ruin. Feel free to speculate down below whether Schiff is playing that "Hamilton" or whether the name is just a coincidence...
You can put your pants back on now, Pro.
He even looks a little like Hamilton in STAS.
