But I thought a dog sniffed out a bomb. Or was it just that they brought in bomb sniffers? Penn station also evacuated. I would take those threats seriously. I suspect they are after loss of life to go with collateral damage. People evacuating defeats part of their purpose.

yeah, both penn station and empire state were evacuated, and both were false alarms. both had bomb sniffing dogs, but, again, both were cleared as fakes within 20 minutes. yes, all threats, now, and perhaps, forever, must be taken seriously, which is truly, truly fucking annoying.

These false alarms can be annoying, but we don't want another 9-11-01 here. They've all gotten to be taken seriously. When people like this do call in false alarms, severe punishment should be taken.

Incidentally, the Empire State Building is again the tallest building in NYC. It was accidentally hit by a US bomber lost in fog in the late 1940s.

from what i've heard and studied, the empire state building is a significantly stronger building, specifically because it was built so long ago. different materials and different architectural designs (an internal structural backbone). different enough to have been able to sustain a 767 hit? maybe. guliani, schumer, and clinton (hillary) have all spoken tonight, however, about the "rebuilding, and reconstruction" or nyc and the wtc. to be "bigger and stronger" than before. rebuilding the twin towers? making them the tallest buildings in the world? making 3 towers? building a memorial? anything is possible, tho i suspect there are already plans to launch construction units into a twin tower reconstruction plan.

The bomber which hit the ESB only glanced it too. Yes, what you've said Rob makes sense, symbolically - re-build them much bigger.

and i suspect that is what they will do - to rebuild them past the heights of the sears tower in chicago and the towers in malaysia. i doubt nyc will want to do without that famous skyline, marked by the two towers. tho, there is speculation -- what is there to present this from happening again? will there be protection for the buildings? will anyone want to work in them, knowing what happened? how long/how much to build them? etc, etc. personally, id love to see them rebuilt, as fast, and as efficiently, as possible. the skyline, and, god forbid, the country, seems naked without them, even if only on that superficial level.

Agreed, as far as protection goes I believe that given the recent events security is going to be pretty tight.

It scares me that they would want to rebuild them as tall or taller. Someone, somewhere will try again sometime. Security may be the best, but if some sicko puts their mind to it... I don't ever want to see planes crashing into buildings ever again. I'm sorry I feel that way but I do.

I was trying to get into Manhattan to go to a vigil when I heard the trains had been shut down because of a police investigation at 34th St. Didn't know at the time that it was a bomb threat, but given the events of the past few days you knew something was up. Here's the most amazing thing: One guy wearing a rent-a-cop uniform starts yelling, "How the fuck am I supposed to get into Manhattan? I've got to go to work!" Another guy starts yelling at the conductor: "How the fuck am I gettin' home? You're gonna give me cab money to get home!" Unbelievable. Hey guys, have you heard about the 10,000 corpses buried in rubble downtown? The majority of New York has been great, but there's always those few who can't think outside of their own little world . . . Later I met three construction workers who'd been helping out. Horrible stories; one told me he'd dug out the bottom half of a fireman's body.

A Chicago reporter asked the Mayor why Ohare couldnt reopen. Daily responded in his typical no-nonsense style "And where would these planes go?!?!?!?! ALL airposts are shut down!" not an exact quote but close enough

Regarding T-Dave's point first, about the B-17 that hit the Empire state building, it was a far smaller plane than the 767 model that hit the trade center towers. I listened to an interview with two structural designers on PBS, saying there was a chance that the buildings would have remained standing if not for the feul that set an intense fire burning in the building. And that the steel becomes unable to hold its load once it's heated at 1500 degrees or higher, which took about an hour to occur in each of the towers, after the jet impact. The building was designed to withstand fire from more predictable sources of building fires, but not the intense fire of an exploding jet and its feul, deep into the structure. Regarding rebuilding the two towers, I think that is very important symbolism. I think our government will insure with new safety procedures that no commercial jet can be stolen in this same way again. And that if any plane poses a similar threat, there will be fighter jets ready to scramble at anything that comes close.
Regarding an incident where some nut crashed a small plane into the white house a few years ago, I understand there are now missiles and artilery in place to prevent a similar incident. Would people be afraid of entering work at a new set of rebuilt twin towers? Well, I can see that, but there's just as much risk of any other building being attacked and destroyed, or at this point, any other major American landmark or monument (does anyone remember the guy in 1982 who locked himself in the Washington monument and said he had a nuclear bomb? False claim, but it was a nervous few hours.) Or for that matter, the entire city of New York is a target, for nuclear, chemical, biological weapons. We can't live our lives in fear, that's what they want!! We just need to have organized nationwide preparation for any future incidents, with medical, fire-rescue and anti-terrorist teams ready in the tens of thousands to respond instantly to, and hopefully even prevent a future incident. Preparation, not fear.

I hope what ever they do with the site they leave enough room for a fitting memorial for all the human lives lost. I know the towers have a symbolic importance to New Yorkers but perhaps room should be left for a small memorial garden or park.

symbolic, most definitly. it should be done, as a sign of strength, and rebuilding, in the figurative sense, as well as the literal. and, apologies to the chicago bretheren, but it should be taller. and more powerful. im sure you'll forgive and understand. will there be concern? of course. but you cant think "what if this happens again" - because, quite frankly, theres no way to stop a plane from flying into any building or landmark, however tall. the way to do that, is to stop those who might fly the plane, i.e; put an end to terrorist attacks. ny will rebuild. in all senses. and ill be there, with brick in hand.

Go, Rob! Go! You have been a very good representative of New Yorkers in the last couple of days. I think the nation feels very proud of their fellow Americans prevailing against the darkest of evils!
