im currently trying the delicious atkins diet. id like to drop some of the love in my handles, otherwise known as my "6 pack of abs protector."

id also like to do it quickly.

the pro of the atkins diet: its fast working. plus, all the meat, cheese, and fatty stuff you can eat.

the con: no pasta.

as a poor, single, bachelor, pasta is by far the most appealing of foods. shortly followed by bread and potatoes, which are also out. none of the white stuff. thats bad, cuz its cheap, easy, and convenient.

sure, 50 hamburgers a day without any worry sounds nice as hell, but... no roll with that burger? ... ever? ... that hurts.

plus (and get this!) for the first two weeks of my atkins diet, no booze. ... no... booze.

im... very much in love with booze. during the weekend, and at least 2 nights during the work week.

an after-work "hooters" fest now goes from a day of breaded and fried wings and 5 or 6 beers to a day of ... water...(?) and grilled chicken sammidge. no bun.

that doesn't sound like a party.

I've lost weight since high school. Mainly from exercise, I can't stand diets. Here's the best tips I can offer from an exercise point of view. The loss of weight is slower but more permanent.:
Run/Bike/Walk anything you can do for a long time (burn those calorie mother fuckers) and you can listen to music.
This page Helps
Drink water all day long. Keep a bottle with you and sip it throughout the day, it'll replace coffee and curb your hunger a bit. (Also it seems to cut down on headaches).
And the one thing I found to be important is to stretch and do some push-ups when you first get up in the morning.

Tell the Hooters girl to hold your buns. [whaaaa!]

THEN, it'll be a party...! [biiiig grin]

I need to get serious about the weight loss, myself... I was recently put on meds for borderline high BP. For other medical reasons, I can't play around too much with fad diets, so it's going to take some of the old reliable: Eat Less, Do More. [sad] [eh... i dunno... ] [...rassamnfrackin...]

I'm of the work out camp myself. I don't go out of my way to diet, but I will get low fat or light cream cheese, sour cream, etc. Then again, I can't seem to get myself to eat anything that doesn't taste good, so if it tastes like crap, I'll stick with the regular instead. I did belong to a gym for a couple months and would hit the precor machine for a half hour a day, which was all I could spare since I went during my lunch hour at work. I could tell it was starting to make a difference, but due to loosing that job, I lost the membership as well.

Also, I wasn't able to be consistant with working out (when I had the membership), I'd do my best to go every day (weekday), but due to being an Admin and having a lot of work to do, or working through lunch/meetings, I had to drop the abs class because it was only for 15 minutes during the time I'd normally go. That and I'd try and go after work, before, which worked a couple times. But as I said, it was a short 2 months, and I haven't been back in the gym since then. I've found that when I used to play volleyball, even once a month, that helped keep my metabolism up and I didn't gain a whole lot of weight. Course that was before I was presribed the nasty steroids that caused me to gain so much weight. UGH

A good tip to help with the water is, fill a bottle with water, then freeze it over night. You'll have ice water all day long. I've found that has helped me drink water at work, vs pop.

Now I can't find a resonably priced gym. They all seem to run around 50 a month, or somewhere around there. Ballys has to be the worst of them. I practically ran screaming when I went in for a free pass. They wanted me to sign up for a year, with out having been there before, plus they added on all this crap they sold, viatmins, muscle gain crap, etc., despite the fact that all I wanted to do was go in, work out the leave. Not take any crap that I didn't know what it was, much less didn't want period. So if I either can find a resonably priced gym, or get my own precor machine, I'll have to just see volleyball as more than a league, it'll be my workouts also.

Well, if you're really committed, you could become addicted to crack/heroin. Ever see a fat addict?

Well, I guess this is a good a time as any to come clean with you all. I do enjoy hiding behind my internet persona, but this is so much a part of me now, I need to share it. Two months ago I went in and had gastric bybass surgery (like carnie wilson and al roker had). So far I am down 33 lbs and a couple of sizes. I have a ways to go, but it is going quick. I really think this is the best decision I ever made. I was at the "lower end" of people havng the surgery (had I weighed 10 lbs less I would not have been able to get it) so the weight loss is slower than for some. But this is the most weight I've ever lost not due to illness, and a helluva lot quicker. It is a total lifesyle change, eating six 1/2 cup meals a day, counting protein, avoiding sugar and fat, getting in 64 oz of water a day, occasionally getting sick. And there is the 5 inch scar on my abdomen. But all worth it. And now that I am off restriction I am working out at a woman's gym called Curves. So that's my story.

Hey Rob, be careful with the Adkins diet. It works great...for a short time. You need to think about long-term diet changes before leaving the diet so you don't gain anything back. I think it is also risking on your urinary system. Consult your doctor.

Me? I've shopped eating most juck food (chocolate and sometimes soda are my only food vices). I've cut down to three to five meals with meat a week, weight lift, and drinking more water. My wieght hasn't changed, but I'm down from a size 12 to 6, so I've trimmed down.

With every diet, one sees noticeable changes at first due to your metabolism adjusting to the change in eating habit. By the 2nd to 4th week, your finds a state of equilibrium and slimming greatly reduces to a crawl.

I'm 200lb, but aside from a layer of "ab protection" as Rob puts it, resulting from sitting on my arse all day, I'm in decent shape. I go to the gym 3 times a week, and eat really well. Never been on a diet.

I had stacked on the weight when Imie was born and I consequently stopped going to the gym. Since I started going back to the gym, it fell off.

Incidentally, I recommend yoga for weight loss. You can buy a (beginner's) tape and do it at home - no gym fees.

And you wont see it on a scale. You'll only see it in your dress size. I took a health class at college #2 and we talked about this. If you work out with weights, you don't see the loss on a scale because you're building muscle, but you will notice it with your clothes. What's happening is the fat is shrinking and the muscle is growing. Which is why I don't want to do leg weights until I trim my mid section down, my problem area. I'm not huge, I'm healthy looking, but at the same time, I'm not trim/toned up, which is all I want to do realy. I don't like the way I look in shorts or a swim suit, but will have to wait to work out for the time being.

The weird thing with me is, when I used to roller blade, I had no problem building up my calf muscles, in fact, they still look great, but my thighs on the other hand, it did nothing for them. [no no no]

I've heard yoga is good for weight loss, but don't see how that would work since it's stretching, unless I'm just mistaken.

Good for you, Kimi. My wife had gastric by-pass surgery about 2 years ago (around the same time I went vegan, as a matter of fact), and she went from 315 to 145 in roughly 18 months. In fact, I'm definitely leaning toward getting the surgery myself pretty soon as I have got to be the world's fattest vegan (French fries are vegetables too, y'know! [wink] ). I originally lost about 40 pounds when I became a vegan, but my poor eating habits and sedentary life-style soon caught up with me and I gained those pounds back plus many more to go with 'em. Geez, there are just so many tasty processed vegan foods and snacks out on the market that are hard to resist: practically every single unhealthy food that your average meat-eater consumes now has a heavily processed vegan analog that is almost as bad and fattening as the food it is imitating!

Sorry to speak ill of the departed (Atkins recently died due to a head injury), but did you know that Atkins suffered a heart attack not too many months before he wound up dying from that head injury? And get this: he had the heart attack while standing in line at a fast food restaurant waiting for his breakfast order of plain sausage patties and eggs smeared in butter. I'm fucking dead serious here, gang. Accident? Or cautionary tale? YOU decide...

oh, there's no way im doin this atkin's thing long term, believe you me.

its basically just a crash course -- not even so much to "start me off," but moreso to purify an impure element that i normally never address with regular working out.

because pasta is so cheap and easy and convenient (especially to a guy like me), my body is completely startchified. im usin this as a way to de-startchified. see? visiting my forums expands your vocabulary!

Pasta is a complex carbohydrate, Rob. Don't eat it after 3pm and you'll lose weight. Otherwise, it sits in your stomach overnight and gets converted to fat. If you have to eat carbs at night, eat rice - simple carb, and its easy to cook. Otherwise, cook a huge steak (little bit of olive oil) and eat it with salad (if you have to have dressing, mix garlic lemon juice and olive oil). Olive oil is still fattening, but at least it has very low cholestrol.

I've heard yoga is good for weight loss, but don't see how that would work since it's stretching, unless I'm just mistaken.

Rollerblading is good for calves (I used to blade for hours along the Swan River in Perth). For thigh toning you need to jog (no less than 20 minutes, since you only lose weight after your body switches from anaerobic to aerobic).

Yoga is about stretching muscles and holding them for a burn. The burn in your muscles also burns calories, and if you're suffering from water retention, it makes you sweat like a pig.

I actually didn't realise I knew this much stuff until now when I've "vocalised" it. I was a gym junkie until my daughter was born: guess some of the rationale sunk in.

The way to lose weight and keep it off is to change for good. Eat healthier and exercise more. Otherwise you yo-yo. NO exceptions. I think.

Yoga is a very good idea. It isn't just stretching, it's a zero-impact was of exercising and gaining stregnth as well as flexability and body wellness. Plus you can find videos and stuff for specific areas. Try the back-care ones. They put you right to sleep after. Sooooo relaxing...

Definately drink more water than you want and curb the carbs. Make sure to keep a balanced diet and ignore those damned government-regulated food pyramids. It's bullshit.

I dunno... I'd share my story, but I gained a lot of weight because I stopped taking the meds I was on really suddenly ... the dosage was pretty up there... Um, yeeaaahh. You don't just stop taking that shit. Hoo-boy. Anyhow, since my chemicals aren't all screwwy anymore, I've been losing the weight like a bad habit. Call me "lucky."

Worked for my mom. She lost 52 lbs. over the course of last year. Myself... I started walking to work at the beginning of the summer and have already lost ten pounds and have managed to keep them off so far. Walking, I'm told, is the best exercise. I've also dropped two inches from my waist since the beginning of the summer, too, which is encouraging. We'll see if I continue to make progress, though...

I was 200 lbs about 8 years ago..it was yo-yo basically..I'm 5'8"...

Anyway I dropped 50 lbs in 4 months by eating 1 happy meal a day and exercising like a mother...

I haven't topped 165 since..my metabolism changed. I exercised regularly until about 3 years ago when I tore 2 abdominal muscles...but i still haven't gone over 165....

But I've changed my eating habits as well...I eat more vegetarian foods and don't eat as many sweets....and I still drink beer...........

All I did to lose the initial weight was do about 500 roman chair situps a day, 100 push ups and rigorous stretching exercises...........

exercise people............

Basically, it's when you are sitting, but there's nothing to stop your back, So your back goes below the bench you are sitting on (sit sideways on the bench). Then you do a sit up from a lower level so the resistance is much greater. As long as you do them slowly they really work your abdominal muscles.

I actually tore my stomach muscles while working for pepsi-cola..the exercises had nothing to do with it. BOYCOTT PEPSI.....they never did pay my medical bills or give me any time off..I worked injured for 2 months in agonizing pain..bastards...

Fuck! Roman push-ups sound too hard! I guess I could try 'em, though--- if I can't manage to come all the way back up I could always just flop backwards off of the bench... [...rassamnfrackin...]

That sucks about Pepsi fucking you over, bro. And here I always thought that Coke was the asshole soft drink company (Coke supports the Republican party, y'know [wink] ).

Roman push-up are fun, but I prefer doing sit-up on a slope. Let me tell you, a good CD can make a work-out worth it.

P.S. Your siggy cracks my shit up, Piggy. (I mentioned it to my twin brother the other day and he about split his britches laughin'!) Did you make it up yourself?

I own Batman the Dark knight Archives #1..it's in there where I read it..I about shit when I read it. So it's actually from that issue........I've never seen anyone mention it, but no..it's an actual comic line.........
Bullshit! No fucking way. Are you talking about the first appearance of Batman from Detective Comics, or the first issue of the Batman title? [whaaaa!]

Yeah, music helps to get a person through many boring or unpleasant ordeals: driving to work, working out, filling out income tax return forms, etc., etc., etc. [wink]

I really need to break myself of this bad habit I've gotten into of staying up past 1AM since my last assignment ended. But getting back to my post, I've been drinking almost nothing but Crystal Light for the past 3 weeks (almost) now and I've dropped 5 pounds since I started. Granted I've found I'm somewhat worshiping my scale because I find myself checking my weight every morning, but I'm trying not to do that since it'll just annoy me due to the fact that the weight wont come off any faster that way. *sigh* But yeah, Crystal Light is working for me. And remember it's only 5 calories a serving (8oz glass) which means you can drink more of that and still not come close to what you would if you were drinking that many cans of pop per day. Even 2 cans a day will add up, as much as I'm in denyl of it when I work. [wink]

Yes I am. Sorry I guess I should have said that, although I kind of assumed it was a given, that and it was late. :) But yeah, I'm eating what I normally do and drinking CL.

<img src=" src="images/icons/wink.gif" /> ).

You tell 'em, Pariah Carey!

I'm doing weight watchers and it's not that bad. You don't HAVE to starve yourself or not drink/eat the foods you love.

You just have to watch your intake of calories/how much you allow yourself to indulge all the time. Thankfully for those of us with a sweet tooth/salty tooth they now have those AMAZING 100 calorie packs of Oreos, Chips Ahoy, and other salty snacks. PLUS for those of you shopping at Kroger: All the Lean Cuisine's are on sell (no matter the box size) for $1.89.

I've also started making my butt go to gym three days a week where I run for thirty mintues and lift light weights.

It's made a huge difference because when I need a snack I can grab a small bag of popcorn or a serving of fruit.

My mom is doing it the insane way: She weighs all her food and eats very small portions 3 times a day. It's not going good for her because a week into it she has to splurge which is fine if you only do it once a week not every other day!

Sorry about the Bally's story Batwoman, my membership dues with them are $25 a month and that's with access to all the local gyms. Fifties a bit much except if you live in California I guess \:p

PS: Don't forget that they have those 2 calorie salad dress sprays that Wishbone came out with too \:\)

And for the pasta stuff, The WW people told me to buy the whole grain pasta (which they sell) along with the basic not that calorie filled Tomato Sauce. You could always get fat skimmed milk cheese of various assorted kinds and have it simmer all day in a crockpot together with the Tomato Sauce. You could also throw in some Sweet/Hot relish like Jeff does in with it too and have it simmer.....SOOOOOOOO yummy! Plus you could also make it with chicken \:\)
That's easy and cost effective too!

Hope this is some help \:\)

They had a WW program at my last job. I knew lots of women that lost a lot of weight because of it. I think they averaged six or seven pounds a week.
