1st public gay high school set for NY

Mayor: H.S. to offer education without fear of harassment

NEW YORK, July 28 — New York City is creating the nation’s first public high school for gays, bisexuals and transgender students. The Harvey Milk High School will enroll about 100 students and open in a newly renovated building in the fall. It is named after San Francisco’s first openly gay city supervisor, who was assassinated in 1978.

“I THINK EVERYBODY feels that it’s a good idea because some of the kids who are gays and lesbians have been constantly harassed and beaten in other schools,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Monday. “It lets them get an education without having to worry.”

The school is an expansion of a two-classroom public school program that began in 1984. A gay-rights youth advocacy group, the Hetrick-Martin Institute, has managed and financed the program since its inception.

The new school’s principal, William Salzman, said the school will be academically challenging and will follow mandatory English and math programs. It also will specialize in computer technology, arts and culinary arts.

State Conservative Party Chairman Mike Long criticized the creation of the school.

“Is there a different way to teach homosexuals? Is there gay math? This is wrong,” Long said. “There’s no reason these children should be treated separately.”

The Hetrick-Martin Institute’s Web site says the school will give its students “an opportunity to obtain a secondary education in a safe and supportive environment. ... We believe that success requires the ability to respect and value the diverse human community.”

i dunno, i think the whole thing sounds retarded. sounds more like a major step back (into "pc land") than any type of step ahead.

the country isn't 50 years away from having all black schools, and now the mentality is returning.

I used to get beat up on in school because I was fat and couldn't throw a decent punch. Where the advocates for me?

This has to be a fucking joke, right? Who in their right mind would think this is a good idea? If you wanna curb harassment, educate the public...coralling victims into a forced reality only inspires them to look at themselves as freaks, and allow those that would engage in the harassment to go unchallenged in thier views.

When those kids get out, nothing in the real world will have changed. I think it's a bad idea.

It's absurd...how about teaching all kids some respect for others? This will just further isolate and alienate these kids in the long run. And to be honest, none of my gay friends were "out" in HS...think about it...how many freshmen will out themsleves to their families to go to a school like this? And I agree with Rob...it is reminiscent of segregation.

I don't see how it's reminiscent of discrimination at all.

The purpose of this public gay high school is, in my minds eye, not to segregate due to prejudice or dislike. The children of gay and lesbian parents, and gay and lesbian students in schools, are routinely subject to targeted violence and harassment during their time in public school. If anything, this school will give them a chance to learn among peers that won't condemn them because they're 'different.'

Seperate but equal by any other name....

To me this robs the straight homophobes a chance to actually interact with "different" people and to see that gay people aern't trying to grope them or molest kids or anything. They're just people like you and I.

I guess if gays, lesbians and transgenders feel comfortable in that environment, I'm all for it, but in a way, it does sound like something of, as Rob says, a step backwards. Doesn't this just make some of these kids more open to attack?

Zod wonders if some do get attracted to the opposite sex(choice or not, debatable), do they get kicked out? Also how can they be free from attack? Aren't there bullies in every society?

Exactly...most of my gay friends didn't come out until college. And then what if, say, there is a really great program there, like science or something and a straight kid wanted the opportunity for that class...will they be not allowed to attend because they are straight? That is just as wrong as discriminating because someone is gay.

I want to know more about this 'gay math' that's mentioned in Rob's post. What do they know that we don't?!

I just don't get this. How can this be legal? Isn't it some form of discrimination? They're barring straight people for no other reason than their sexual orientation! Even if they had a 4.0 average, some straight kid would be passed over for someone who may not be as academically gifted but meets the requirement of being gay. That's not right. There aren't "all-gay workplaces", so why should there be an all-gay high school?

There are many ALL black schools...
there are many parochial all male or female schools...
Not that I agree with any of them but they do exist.

To me an all gay school would seem to focus too much on extra ciricular activity than needed in school.

Y'know...every kid gets hassled in high school. Long hair, weight, brains, etc. Dividing people by sexual preference just doesn't seem fair.

As an aside, I actually know kids who went(or still go) to high schools where being gay or bi is considered cool. If only Rob had known about those schools sooner... [no no no]

Those aren't public schools, however. They are allowed to be exclusive because they're private.

Since it is public, I highly doubt this new high school is 100% exclusive to gay, bisexual and transgender students. If it is, I'd love to see what happens to their public funding the first time they turn away a student based on something other than city zoning.

Gay math? As if math wasn't scary enough! [wink]

Really, I guess it's up to the kids themselves as far as I'm concerned. If I had a gay or lesbian child I would let them choose whether or not they wanted to go. Sure, this school won't change the real world discrimination and hatred that gays and lesbians will have to face upon graduation, but let 'em at least have a decent time while they are in school.

I don't imagine any straight kid would want to go to a gay-oriented school. Think of the ribbing he'd get from his friends.

And while I think Rob has a point about segregation, Franta also has a point about there being schools which cater to different groups, and as long as Richard Simmons High doesn't discriminate against straight students who want to go there it shouldn't be a problem.

Separate high schools for gay kids makes no sense. Life itself isn't about separation, it's about getting along. Furthermore, not everybody knows in high school if they're gay or str8. Sometimes, ya gotta find out the, um, hard way.

And even in this more enlightened age, I can imagine many parents refusing to send their ostensibly gay kids there.
