...and by "Vinyl freaks", I mean folk who like those big black discs called "Records", played on a turntable at 33 and a third RPMs (or 45 or 78), not those fetish chicks you find on the internet who wear the shit.

Just curious.

Original Vinyl, IMO, Has a different sound quality... sounds warmer than CD Remasters. Sounds... prettier, ifuwheel. Plus, the album artwork is more coherent, easily undstandable.

I own a few records myself. I like the collectibility and sound of records, however, their compactibility is what generally hurts them. However, I do wish they hadn't stopped making records in lieu of 8-tracks and cassettes. Just seems like a waste to me...

Uh, CW, 8 tracks died out long before "records" did.

But, anyway, this reminds me of a funny story (funny to me, at least):

This Christmas, my wife, the lovely and talented Mrs. G (as we'll call her), came upon these new blank CDs that are printed up to look like little vinyl albums:

She was all excited to buy them for our kids, only to realize that, given their ages, they had no idea what they were supposed to represent!

I'm not one, but I know a few. They're into it more for sampling [it's a hip hop thing], however.

Yes, however, they were originally intended to take the place of records, if I'm not mistaken. It'd be like my saying that DVDs and laser discs replaced VHS tapes, despite the fact that laser discs died out before VHS tapes did. However, laser discs were precursors to DVDs in the same way that 8-tracks were precursors to cassettes.

Yeah but it was CDs that finally killed vinyl!
Tapes & vinyl were just alternate choices for something like twenty years!

Actually, if I recall correctly, 8-tracks and cassettes both started about the same time, and were competing formats. Sort of the way that Betamax and VHS were competing VIDEOtape formats. Neither was the precursor to the other and both were adaptations of reel to reel recording.

In any event, while 8-track MIGHT HAVE been INTENDED to replace vinyl it never did. As such, and given that vinyl lasted years after 8-tracks were discontinued, you really can't say 8-track replaced vinyl.

The same can be levelled at mini disc which was sposed to replace CDs,but never really caught on!

No format will replace another unless its significantly better & is affordable!
That said,it will only become affordable when it is popular so you have a kind of catch 22 (thats why DVD players are so cheap now yet mini disc players are still quite expensive).

Simply put,if your product is so much better than the product it is to replace,it will initially sell to people who are willing to spend out lots of cash, then people who cant afford the original price will benefit as prices come down!
If your product isnt that far of an advance, then most people wont bother buying it at all!

Now recordable DVD players are available & are rapidly dropping in price we could start seeing the phasing out of vhs!

Well, I was born in '83, so I'm basically just going by hearsay and what my parents have told me. So, a few facts are liable to be smudged, due to my (usual) reliance on second-hand information.

At any rate: I like vinyl!

A few years ago, I specifically asked for a turntable stereo for Xmas. I've been collecting records ever since. Punk and classic rock just sound better on vinyl. Plus a lot of the obscure bands I listen to release albums, ep's, singles, etc. on vinyl only.

So, yes.

Plus, I do like chicks in vinyl.

I'm a DJ at the local circuit bar here in the city, and I have a TON of vinyl, record pool stuff... Most of it - full 12" singles with the dance mixes, but do have a few albums...

But yes, vinyl does sound better. The bass is much deeper. It just all depends on what music you are listening to. Digital music will sound better with a digital format, but will never match the bass felt on a vinyl record. So if you're looking for a lot of bells and whistles, electronic bleeps and such (techno/trance), then cd is the way to go - but for the bass felt in classic rock, house music, etc - vinyl is awesome.

Actually I tend to find most vinyl tinny sounding & I hate the fucking crackling noise!
Plus it takes up too much room!

...daddy?

Seriously, though, I'm often told by my mother that I was "born in the wrong decade", as I'm something of a nostalgia buff, and love the oldies and "retro" music and collectibles from decades ago. I also like older television programs, like The Honeymooners and stuff of that nature...

Actually the Minidisc was supposed to replace the cassette. Sony wanted to give the consumers a recordable digital format. Mini disc uses ATRAC compression technology so its not as good as a CD would sound. Sony intended it to be the next generation of home recording and for it to replace the cassette.

I have to agree. CD remasters sound louder and fuller to me then vinyl does. Plus i hate that damn crackling noise also.

Vinyl freak here. But I use them to DJ and for mixing. Still, I easily have over 500 records in my collection.

If your records are crackling - you might need a new needle, or to deep clean the record. You gotta take care of 'em just like cd.
