I was just wondering if anyone here has this problem? People constantly making fun of ethnics just because they think racism is a joke, or they're just plain racist? I was working today and one of the managers (who used to be my best friend) and my brother kept making racial jokes about blacks. I can laugh at a racist joke occasionally, but this was one joke after another for over an hour. I told them it was enough but they laughed me off and kept it up. The final straw was when I told them about this older guy I know who had a stroke, fell and split his head open, and had a heart attack. The poor guy's on his death bed and my brothers like, "it could've been worse, he coulda turned black." He and the manager started busting up laughing. I got pissed off and told them I'm walking out and I did. I clocked out and left. I doubt I'll get in trouble for it because I was voluntarily staying to help, but stuff like that is part of the reason I'm looking for a new job. I'm totally ashamed of my brother, but if I told him that he'd shrug it off and make more jokes. Anyone else deal with shit like this?

I've sent in several job applications to my local FOX TV station, as have quite a few other people I know, all of whom are Jewish, and none of us have heard anything from them. We've heard rumors that they may not hire Jews.

Lord, don't I wish.
If we did, I'd be a big time actor or screenwriter, and Laetitia Casta would be my love slave, instead of me being single, lonely, and substitute teaching for the most demonic pack of sixth graders G-d ever put on this earth.
And "The Critic" would never have been cancelled.

When I lived in Sacramento I worked with a lot of different races. My personnal policy was if they couldn't or refused to speak english, they didn't exist to me. The management hated me because of that.

racial jokes are simply incredibly sensitivity-based, and because everyone has a different sensitivity level, its impossible to really see how something'd effect someone else.
its just very, very tricky.
some people will think your brother and his boss are horrible people and should be shot. others'll think they're just bein stupid and others that they're just having fun.
everyone is right in their own mind, and nothing anyone says can tell them different.
my friends and i make racial jokes all the time, but only because we know one another, and know we can get away with the jokes. we're not hurting anyone's feelings. in the same fasion, we make weight jokes, height jokes, religious jokes, personality jokes, drunk jokes... whatever. they're individual experiences or characteristics we all share, and can discuss or laugh about toegether.
what your boss and brother did wrong was not correctly perceive their environment. if its pissing you off, it was cruel of them to continue. in that instance, they're pretty much upsetting you on purpose, which is wrong in my book.

Like I said, they don't bother when they're an occassional thing. I've even told them, but when it's an every day thing with one joke after another after another, while throwing in the infamous "n" word in every joke, I got fed up with it. There's a line between being stupid and being racist, and they've been crossing that line a lot lately.

No, you're thinking of Sean Connery in The Avengers movie (one of the worst I've ever seen - I only saw it to see Sean Connery as an all-out bad guy. Wasn't worth it.)

First off, any medium to large company should already have policies and procedures on record that strictly prohibits this kind of unnacceptable workplace behaviour.
It's harassment period. Regardless of whether you're black or not. It's offensive and is not condusive to a pleasant workplace enviroment.
Now if you're working in a small company and the owner is one of the people acting the fool, then I'm not too sure what the rules are regarding that. Still, it's unacceptable and quite unprofessional. I'd start looking for other means of employment myself if the behaviour persists.
Where may I ask are you living at? I find that kind of behavior baffling seeing as how if anybody was so overtly racist like that in L.A. (or any other large Metropolis) you'd be pretty unpopular and probably would rightly get your ass handed to you by someone in less than a day.
As far as 'english only'. Now in my workplace we have fun with language. We speak in our native tounges among ourselves and even try to teach and learn new stuff from others. This one Egyptian guy has pretty much taught us all the Egyptian swear words and I've taught him all the spanish ones. I'll just say that i don't beleive in the 'melting pot' approach to America. You don't obliterate your very identity to please the mainstream.

Definitely not. I find different people's nationalities and cultural nuances are what make life interesting. And definitely their food! A nation of only white people (or people who have to act like white people) would be a complete waste of space. Good thing Canada has a sprinkling of other nationalities.

And I don't suggest that either. On the other hand, I do look down on people who come to this country and don't bother to learn English. Since many people in this country speak English, to not learn it is to me a sign of laziness.
If I moved to some country where English was not the common language, I know I'd have to learn the common language spoken there if I expected to live there.

I completely agree with you there. To me, it's a sign of laziness if you've lived in a country for literally years and you still don't know the basics needed to get you around unaided by others. Still, I also think that Americans tend to frown upon rather than encourage bilingualism where many people in other countries know 2 or more languages just as a matter of basic education.

in most nations in Europe it's required by law that you must learn that nations language if you want to acquire citizenship! I think that's a good thing!

Or you'd find a lot of jackasses who think the same as you. I've met people from New York, LA, and other large Metropolises; and many of them are as racist if not more racist than the bigots from a rural or smaller city area.

I can't speak for the rest of the country, but I know why foreign languages don't thrive so much where I live. I took three years of Spanish in high school and another two in college. To this day, I can't remember a damned bit of it. I don't use Spanish in my day to day life, so that knowledge has been replaced by the more important facts of the hotness of the female bartender at my favorite watering hole. It also didn't help that we were being taugh Castillian Spanish when I have more of a chance of running into the Mexican dialect. The US is pretty spread out and isolated in many parts, making the need for a second language useless to many.
Also, a lot of these European countries are learning the languages of their immediate neighbors with whom they do a lot of interaction or even visit the country very often. So there is more of a need in Europe for multilingual capabilities than there is her in the State.

I have to disagree with you whole heartidly here, Bobo. The intent of the comments is what makes it wrong. I too joke around with some friends of mine who are black because they also joke with me about being white. In both instances, we're not saying things with the intent to hurt or degrade each other. Actually, we're making fun of stereotypes and racism itself because we are also willing to apply those stereotypes to ourselves in humorous fashions. Like I said, we don't mean it; nor are we being hateful with it.
But from the way Stupid Dog told his account, his boss and brother were degrading black people for their own amusement and possible self gratification. If that's true, then they are wrong no matter how sensitive their environment is.

That's true, but I don't think the people who teach those required courses put any effort into actually teaching foreign languages, especially when it comes to conversational skills. At least in grade school they don't - in college, I actually managed to pick up some decent conversational skills.
But throughout grade school, which is the perfect time to lay the foundations for learning another language, I've walked away from foreign language courses with all the credits I need, decent grades, but minimal language skills (if any.) I went to elementary school in Miami, and I took Spanish for FIVE YEARS (and my Spanish teacher was actually Hispanic.) All we did was play kickball and watch cartoons in ENGLISH (and a little bit of reading out loud - so I can read Spanish, but I have no idea what I'm saying.) For FIVE FUCKING YEARS. My parents kept complaining to the principal, but nothing was ever done about it (and I wasn't allowed by the school to stop going to the class). As a result, I'm probably the only Miami native who can't speak Spanish because some bitch of a teacher wasted five years teaching me how to play kickball.
When I studied Hebrew at a private school, my teachers were lousy, but at least they TRIED to teach us Hebrew. How the hell am I supposed to learn how to speak Spanish if my teachers refuse to teach me how?
And from what I've heard from other students, I'm not the only one who's gone through something similar to this.
So based on my experiences, just because teaching foreign languages is required in grade school and college, doesn't mean that the people responsible for teaching it actually care if the students are able to learn a foreign language or not. And that's certainly discouraging to someone who actually wants to learn another language, or who may need to in order to find work in their hometown (in Miami, one's chances of finding a job are slimmer if they don't know Spanish.)

which, of course, is true in a PC world. thats a fine PC answer.
but just for giggles n'shits, replace the race characteristic with some other adjective. fat. short. thin. slow. uncoordinated. poor. religious. ugly. liberal. rich.
they're all the same. they're all characteristics that differentiate one grouping from another, that potentially leave themselves open to insults, simply because they differentiate us. race is simply one of the more sensitive issues.
technically, in this same PC wolrd, you should never make fun of anyone. any such comment is wrong.
but everyone does it. there wouldn't be all that much to laugh at if y'didn't! every other post on this forum is someone mocking someone else.
in my opinion, you're only wrong if you're hurting someone's feelings -- thus all tying into my initial point, that it all comes down to your environment.
its an unpopular view, sure. but nothing short of honest.

Or just one that follows a set of moral guidelines.
If someone throws insults at you with the sole purpose of being an ass and to try and make you made, but you don't let it bother you, does that mean that person did nothing wrong? If two racists stand around making racists jokes that only they can hear, does that make it right?
Yeah, hurting someone's feelings adds to the wrong of it. There is still also the purpose of the statements. If you can joke about height, weight, race, religion, or whatever withsomeone without offending them or intending to offend them, that's all good. Because, Rob, we are not supposed to purposefully hurt other peoples' feelings or talk about them behind their backs to minimalize them as a person. Not because it's not the PC thing to do, but because it's not the moral thing to do.

Or just one that follows a set of moral guidelines.
but morals are dependant upon environment.
my friends and i might have a different set of morals than your friends and you. something that hurts your feelings might be nothing to me, and vice versa.
if we're fine exchanging weight jabs with one another, and always refrain from doing it around your more sensitive friends, whats the problem?

no, quite the opposite.
despite my putting up a front, if it bothers me, its wrong.
the insulter was unaware of the insultee's environment, and took liberties he shouldn't have. without knowing me, you can't know how i'll react to certain comments.
similarly, swearing, in general, is of course wrong. however, certain groupings of people have no problem swearing aroung one another, at one another, whatever. but there are others who do have an issue with swearing, so the swearers should refrain from doing it while around the more sensitive.
if they didn't, i'd consider that wrong.

like i said, any type of insult is, obviously, wrong. i'm not arguing on the bases of morals here, nor do i pretend we're living in a loving, PC world.
i'm simply applying real-life context to the situation.
if two racists sit around making racists jokes where no one can hear ... who the fuck cares? they're fine with it. they're not hurting anyone. they're enjoying their different, allbeit idiotic, lifestyle.
its wrong to us, but they're not doing it to us.
its no different when you and grimm sit at home, making fun of kevin nash because he can't wrestle. or rob liefeld because he can't draw. or anytime you've told a slut joke.
to me, all of those are identical to race jokes, in that they're poking fun at the expense of another grouping, because they're another grouping. race jokes just happen to have a higher rank on the sensitivity scale.
all insults are wrong. thats obvious. thats not the point.

People should be more like me and not judge others by the color of their skin but by the size of their lips...

Seriously though I believe we're all born w/ a fear of that which is different and these feelings are usually reenforce negatively by environment yet we all have a brain and if we utilize it properly we can get past our fear and prejudices. Or we can all strip down buck neekid and run through the streets. Think about it and what would happen to prejudice if we did. Your choice.

The speck of truth in that statement is dwindling, to say the least.
The "minorities"(wink wink) aren't so minority anymore.

That's true, but I don't think the people who teach those required courses put any effort into actually teaching foreign languages, especially when it comes to conversational skills. At least in grade school they don't - in college, I actually managed to pick up some decent conversational skills.
Yeah, though most schools(but not all) require foreign language courses, the general emphasis on bilingualism still isn't nearly as high in this country as it is in others.
I think it's a pretty big contributing factor to why Europeans hate American tourists. If you're in Paris, don't even bother trying to start a conversation with a local in English.
