Don't let Trout's oversimplification of what was said confuse you.
No creator knows the characters they create the first time they write them, it takes time for a writer to get to know their creation.
What I actually said was that Siegel and Shuster didn't get to know Superman till they started working on Superboy, which gave them the chance to go back to the characters past and start developing it beyond the two dimensional geek.
Trout's just sore that not everyone agrees with him that Superman should be limited to hanging around with super monkeyes.
