If I were to write a short review of this trilogy it would be go read these books now.
Quite simply this is the best Star Wars story I have ever read, seen, or played.

The three books are titled
Heir To The Empire
Dark Force Rising
The last Command

This series takes place five years after Return Of The Jedi. The Rebel Alliance, now known as the new rebublic has taken over Coruscant and is having a huge problem with setting up a new galactic government. The Empire is now under control of a new mysterious alien Grand Admiral named Thrawn. It is still alive but much smaller than it was pre-endor. The entire trilogy has three or four storylines going at the same time and keeps the reader interested by using cliffhangers. Some of the characters switch alegiances. Some are being used by the Empire without knowing it.

The first novel is a lot of setup and introducion of new characters such as Mara Jade, Admiral Palleon and Talon Karrde. These are now some of my favorite characters. Admiral Palleon is in command of the empires flagship the Chimera and serves directly under Grand Admiral Thrawn. Mara Jade works for Talon Karrde who is now in charge of the largest smuggling operation in the galaxy. Mara also has a mysterious past connected to the empire. All the movie characters are back and Zahn does an excellent job at keeping them in character.

The second novel introduces the Katana Fleet. A mysterious fleet nicnamed the Black Fleet because of its disappearance fifty years ago. It also has Luke meeting a long thought dead Jedi master named C'Boath. This was an interesting character but I found him kind of predictable. This book also indroduces one of first leaders of the rebellion named Bel Iblis who is fighting his own way against the empire. This book also has the greatest ending of the trilogy, which was kind of diminished by the prequels but is still great.

The third novel is my least favorite of the three but is much better than alot of the other Star Wars novels. It has the birth of the next generaton of Jedi and and sets the stage for many more stories, mainly the Hand of Thrawn duology that I will review shortly. It begins with the Empire preparing for their return to Coruscant and rule of the galaxy once more. The New Rebublic finds a couple new allies against the Empire and the entire book leads up to the battle a technology to save coruscant and the destruction of the emperors private warehouse.

The only complaints I have is something that happens with Luke at the end of the third book. I won't spoil it but I found it unnecessary and pointless.

Overall these books are what any Star Wars fan needs to read before they can call themselves true fans. The entire series costs only twenty-one dollars in paperback. Which is cheaper than just one of the prequel DVDs. This is simply the greatest Star Wars story ever told, and some of the best stories ever told. Read it now.

What was that shit with the cloaked asteroids orbiting Coruscant about? I never quite understood it.

If he could leave a million cloaked asteroids in orbit....... why not just drop them onto the friggin' planet itself?

p.s. Star Wars novels suck.

Read the LENSMEN saga if you want REAL, UNCUT space opera. That's what it's all about right there. The first, the best.
