TEHRAN, Sept 22 (Reuters) - An Iranian woman, beaten every day by her husband, asked a court to tell him only to beat her once a week, a newspaper said on Wednesday. Maryam, the middle-age woman, said she did not want to divorce her husband because she loved him, the Aftab-e yazd daily said.
"Just tell him to beat me once a week ... Beating is part of his nature and he cannot stop it," Maryam told the court.
The Tehran court found the man guilty and banned him from beating the wife, the paper said.
"If I do not beat her, she will not be scared enough to obey me," the husband said.

And your post was extremly tacky for in a thread about physical abuse, situations like this that have lead to the victims murder by their husbands, boyfriends, wives, girlfriends, etc/abusers.

Yeah well, abuse whether it's physical or mental, is nothing to joke about. It's a serious issue that nearly all Middle Eastern women live with on a daily basis. They're raised in that enviroment and marry into it. Especially those in Middle Eastern countires. Women are second class citizens, if that at all. Men beat their wives into submission, or take out their anger on them for no reason.

People should be judged on an idividual basis based on thier behaviour and decisions. There are many good Christian gentle men of middle eastern decent.

There's really nothing that can get my piss boiling like a man who says that women are lower than animals and should be treated as such.

Also, I didn't realise you were middle eastern yourself. Your experience is probobly alot like my wifes with Mexican men. It's a very macho culture that glorifies spousel abuse as a part of the culture (in certain regions). The level in which men are distanced from that culture helps alot though. I know alot of Mexican American men who are acctually surprised by the way men in mexico act towards women, because they don't grow up in teh culture.

I sympathize with your position, Batwoman. I am aware of the way spousal abuse is accepted in Middle Eastern culture, and I don't presume to understand what it's like to be a Middle Eastern woman.
However, to say that all of a group of people share the same abusive mentality is unfair. I do know Middle Easterners. Infact, my roommate last year was a Middle Eastern psych major, and is quite possibly the kindest and most humble human being I've ever met. One of my mother's longtime college friends and fellow scientists(a female) is also Middle Eastern, and happily married to a man that worships the ground she walks on.
That's all I have to say on this subject.

I may be generalizing, but I know "Christian" Middle Eastern me who are like this, family members actually. Case in point, just last Monday I was watching tv and my mom asked me to empty the dishwasher, I had just sat down with a taffy apple and said I'd do it later. She didn't say anytihng, knowing it'd get done and sat down for a minute, then went out for a walk. My dad came down stairs later and looked in the dishwasher, I don't know why, he never loads, unloads, or starts it, claims he doesn't know how BULL!, and yells at me in a very threatening tone for not doing it. Since I refuse to take that crap, I don't care who it is, I yelled back in a tone that reminded him, yet again, that I don't take that crap.
Years ago, when his brother and (brother's) wife were living here, back in the early 80s was it?, his very own brother used to beat his wife. He bashed her head against the toilet one day and broke her teeth.
Just 2 examples of so called Christian Middle Eastern men.
I've got a good 31 years and counting worth of stories of mental abuse from my own dad towards myself, sister and mom.
Don't sit there and act all high and mighty because I may be generalizing a culter I know first hand. If anyoen has the right to generalize, it's me and any other woman like me.

I'm not trying to act high and mighty, for one when you first made your statement I didn't realise that it was coming from first hand experience. Also alot of people will look at various cultures from the outside and make generalisations. I also assumed (perhaps wrongly) that when you reffered to middle eastern men, you were refering to race in general, whereas I "think" what you're refering to has more to do with men who are steeped in that culture. I still hold that all individals should be viewed as individuals in hopes that some can break from destructive traditions.

I hope you're right, but she did reaffirm her belief several times after, so most of the evidence points to her really thinking that. If she had simply recanted, or just admitted that the comment may have been unfair, there would be no issue. We do all make mistakes. There's no shame in it.

You know, it amazes me that you people will sit here and nitpick everything I've said in this thread, completly ignoring the subject at hand; a woman being abused by her husband.
